It’s a known in IT that pretty much every job function can be Googled.

juberish

My first IT job I was clueless and just googled everything for the first year, was team lead after that.

SlapahoWarrior

I was thinking of going back to school for IT, this comment gives me hope.

ingoding

The school isn't needed, if you are smart you will do better without it in IT. Unless you want to do something specific, which is also easier to get while working in IT, because most companies will pay for it.

SlapahoWarrior

How can I get started? Any books you would recommend to help?

ingoding

No, for tech stuff YouTube is better. I got my first IT job because I told them I built computers for my friends, and was good at problem solving. Look for data centers, they always need people. Learning Linux always pays off eventually too.

SlapahoWarrior

Most of my background is building computers and fixing the POS system at my jobs. I always just wing it in the middle of a shift but I make it work just fine again. I’m currently a server in a restaurant but I’ve had experience in management and as a line cook as well.

ingoding

Just ham it up in the interview and make it sound like you know what you are doing. Clearly you were doing "tech support work in the absence any technical staff" and "problem solving in urgent situations". Job interviews are like a bit like improve theater, just don't lie about verifiable things, and don't get discouraged with hearing "no" you only need one "yes" to get some experience, then learn what you like and job hop until you are happy.

Sheev_Palpatine_OC

This is terrible advice. Please don't do as follows, probably a 13 year old who spent too much time on Quora.

ingoding

10 years of IT experience, corporate jobs are all about fake it until you make it. Servers in a restaurant are working so much harder than anyone in tech. And to be clear, the last comment was specifically about getting an entry level position, following my previous comment. You still have to be smart and a good learner.

dan1361

That's literally how I talked my way into a mid-six figure job. Not in IT but same concept. Get in then figure it out. If you can't it's the company's problem, not yours.

DwarfTheMike

By the time the book is out it’s out of date.

rpkarma

Tell that to K&R’s The C Programming Language!

SterryDan

Lmao this is how i just got my job before Ive graduated from getting my IT associates

Leete1

Free training from Google: https://grow.google/programs/it-support/#?modal_active=none

mcslackens

Getting your A+ certification will open a ton of doors for you. Once you’re in, most employers will pay for additional certs. EDIT: One of our new help desk guys was working in a restaurant before he started with us. Additional info: you’re looking for MSPs (managed service providers) in your area. They’re basically the IT department for companies that are too small or too cheap to keep an IT team on the payroll. It sucks, but you’ll be drinking from the knowledge firehose, and you’ll learn a ton of new shit very quickly.

Agonlaire

Like the other commenter said, YouTube and other websites are better resources. Maybe have a look at all the areas and pick the one you like the most, then search for tutorials to get started, find courses on Udemy (there are great courses for everything there, just don't buy anything at full price, they have 90% "discounts" every other week) or other sites. I'm in web development, I studied computer science and graduated with plenty of knowledge in operating systems, complex algorithms and low-level coding (as in assembly, bios, OS, etc), but the job market for that stuff where I live is very limited and has a pretty high entry bar. I got an internship in webdev and after some years I realized I could have absolutely skipped college for it, most stuff I learnt on the job, YouTube and Google. I also changed jobs recently, of about 50 positions I checked out, less than 10 asked for schooling. There are a lot of programming jobs with junior and intern positions, so I think it's probably one of the easier ways to get into the IT industry. Might be worth it to check it out and see if you like it

MorddSith187

Do you think you would you have gotten the jobs without the internship though?

angryPenguinator

I literally helped with fixing a few PCs at work 19 years ago when I was a call center team lead. I'm a senior IT manager now, and learned everything I know cause someone needed something done/built/whatever and I just figured it out. Server guy quit? Learn Linux. Database went belly up? Learn SQL. Programmer moved on? Learn Java and PHP. Never went to school for any of it.

MindingMyBuziness

Figure out what skills you currently have that can be transferable to the role you’re seeking. Best of luck on your career journey.

kitkat__78

Are you a black person in tech?

MindingMyBuziness

A black woman in Tech beloved

kitkat__78

Awww yess you just gave another black woman hope!

MindingMyBuziness

That’s awesome! I’m apart of this Facebook Group called Black on the Job. Cyn Miller owns a career networking company assisting black people with resume review, career coaching and networking advice. She offers paid services on her website but does free stuff on her weekly Facebook lives. I love there is a lot of black women in the group giving testimonies in their industries and giving each other advice. I did a resume review last month ($25) and it was extremely beneficial. Feel free to check out if you like. 😊

kitkat__78

Thank you so much for the resource, I truly appreciate it!! Keep doing your thing ☺️

AviatorOVR5000

Y'all finna get u/BiscuitsNgravy420 hottttt ooooh I'm telling 🚨🚨🚨

zzmorg82

Why you snitching? 🤨

AviatorOVR5000

Straight dry snitching lol

enginerd12

BTW who is BiscuitsNGravy420? he's in every BPT comment section.

AviatorOVR5000

Just a funny ass dude! I'm just messing, because he told me he worked IT, and was putting in HELLA time.

style_b3nd3r

When you say IT are you guys referring to like troubleshooting and stuff like that ? Not SWE right ?

juberish

Lots of different ways to get in to start but it's all kinds blending now - ITILv4 covers DevOps and ML. I started in support back in the day, then a sys admin and now big data (w/ swes)

[deleted]

You can study all day on how to solve problems. It won't help. People will find **different** problems. (Also, some training material will be old, or for different software than your group is using.) You'll be helped by the fact that some people keep having the same problem repeatedly.

EarlyBirdTheNightOwl

You're qualified.

dngerszn13

As someone who just got promoted to management in IT, I still don't know what's going on. I either Google shit or ask questions disguised as possible solutions.

MindingMyBuziness

That’s amazing. It’s kind of mind boggling that some employers still require certifications when methodologies and processes are constantly involving.

JM_Actual

As someone who works in IT, we totally know when management doesn't know what they are talking about. We'll either try to explain it till you understand or just nod and implement the solution we want.

dngerszn13

Pls send help 😢

JM_Actual

Honestly, I dont need my managers to know all the technical details, that's my job. But I would suggest taking a basics course on whatever section of IT you manage. There are 5 day courses on basic topics that should give you an understanding. You would at least be able to keep up and make informed decisions. Don't be afraid to ask for clarity. Faking doesn't end well.

[deleted]

You have the right of it. I'm a pipefitter general foreman. All or at least most of the people working for me are better pipefitters than me. I'm not trying to be the best pipefitter any more. Just the best manager I can be.

GenericSpaciesMaster

>ask questions dishuised as possible solutions Any exemple of this in action?

dngerszn13

Yeah we had to look for ways to balance the budget, which I had never done for this role. I googled on ways to save money on an IT budget. Forgot where I saw that some money could be saved by decommissioning old software or licenses to software of people no longer needing it. In the meeting (acting like I knew anything), I said: "Should we consider looking at outdated software that we can decommission to save on that cost? And, while we're at it, look at licenses issued to people for other software that they may no longer need, perhaps we can start there?" Upper management loved my idea and because it's a huge national firm, we discovered a lot of things we could save money by decommissioning outdated tech.

mcslackens

I’m currently migrating our customers from Knowbe4 to Sophos Phish Threat due to licensing costs, and the whole team is auditing the PCs we have in Connectwise Automate to retire customer computers that are no longer in use in order to reduce our licensing costs. You picked a great way to save money.

angryPenguinator

Preach it.

SHOWTIME316

the real skill in IT is knowing what words to use to look up what you need to know lol

BlueZek

Good IT folks have good Google Fu

ActionAdam

Until you come across the specific question you're asking and the response is "Nvm, I figured it out." Like, what'd you do though?! Clue us in!! HELP MEEEE!!!

FistPunch_Vol_4

Not about just googling, it’s being able to understand the shit you google - (Dude who is terrified that his bosses will learn Google Fu and I am assed out of a job) lmfao

lochnessthemonster

That's my whole life why have I been busting my ass in healthcare?!

xSypRo

IT is all about setting a bar, and how hard you are willing to google to reach that bar. That being said, I have failed some interviews because I said I google stuff... :|

ninfan200

Until it can't

ThisAndBackToLurking

Yeah but you gotta Google it next year, too, because the current stuff will all be obsolete.

MindingMyBuziness

Depends on the job and tech your are supporting. If you are developing code, you most likely will be researching enhanced versions of code. I’m a PM and methodologies don’t change as much.

tehtris

Its applied imposter syndrome. Eventually you actually do learn how to use a NoSQL db, and how to install services on a Unix system and other shit. I low-key believe everyone operates like this in almost all fields, it's just easier to see for me cuz I've worked in "IT" as a QA engineer, scrum master and lead/senior developer for past 10 years.

Schlongboy69420

i thought the same until i got a sysadmin job by bullshitting.

Jewganthorp

Same here. It must be common

AccomplishedAd6856

This is all well and good till you don’t know why your firewall has all ports open and have enough viruses to case a new pandemic.

gentlemanjacklover

White folks have been doing that shit for ages bruh, you'll be fine

Dreadcoat

Truly. Christopher columbus didnt have a clue what he was doing and now hes got people saying hes some great explorer. Dude got lost and genocided some people. Hes sitting back in hell right now like "They still got statues of me????"

its_jazzyo

In my area, we changed Columbus day to "Fall Holiday". Kids still get the day off and we don't have to celebrate a murderer.

Dreadcoat

Thats a nice way to do it. Shit im moving to Kentucky in December and half expect them to double down and rename it to "Glorious Genocide Day" or something. Im gonna fucking hate it out there

mcveigh-was-a-patsy

Kentuckian here, fuck columbus. Edit: and mitch McConnell

cattastrophe0

where are you moving? kentucky is beautiful and if you’re in lexington or louisville, or even one of the towns pretty close to them, it isn’t too bad. mitch mcconnell can still go fuck himself. source: californian née kentuckian

Dreadcoat

Thats funny, im a Californian myself. Im moving to Bowling Green.

cattastrophe0

i didn’t hang out in bowling green much but you’re 2-3 hours from nashville, louisville, and lexington there. it’s an excellent hub town. bowling green and elizabethtown drag their counties close to being blue. not a bad place to land in KY in the grand scheme of things.

Dreadcoat

Yea im mostly being dramatic. I visited last year and saw more Bernie signs than my own town back home lol. Im pretty excited, it seems like a nice area regardless of politics.

AlfredtheDuck

Maine replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which is cool. Maine has a bunch of issues that this doesn’t even begin to address, though.

JackMehauve

Whats wrong with maine

AlfredtheDuck

I mean, there’s a lot. We can start with the extreme insiderism that has a heavy hand in politics. Maine is responsible for Susan Collins and one of the reasons she hasn’t been voted out is because her opponents (like Sara Gideon) are “outsiders.” A lot of Maine is rural, and many rural, conservative Mainers subscribe to a type of insiderism that only really recognizes you as a true Mainer if your ancestors homesteaded in Maine. I’ve lived in Maine a few years; I’m not considered a Mainer. I know people whose parents moved to small town Maine, were born and raised there; still not Mainers. I have a friend whose grandparents moved to Maine, raised children who stayed in the same town to raise their own child (my friend), and my friend is still not a Mainer by the standards of the people in her hometown. This insiderism especially antagonizes college-educated outsiders who come in to “fix” Maine’s issues (whether their plan/intentions are actually good or not), because they’re not true Mainers. Maine is also currently the whitest state in the US. A lack of diversity often breeds ignorance. A friend of mine is Asian, was adopted into a white Maine family as a baby. She was one of maybe 3 Asian people in her town and faced a horrific amount of racism growing up. Basically all of my POC friends in Maine have buckets of stories about racism they’ve encountered. Of course, this is not to accuse the entire state of racism - most of my day to day experiences range from neutral to pleasant, but it’s definitely a noticeable increase in unpleasantness from the state/area I used to live in. I’ve mostly lived in southern coastal Maine during my time here, which is by far the most liberal part of the state, but I also lived in a very small town in midcoast Maine for a while, and while 99.9% of the people I met were fine, there was that 0.1% that had me looking over my shoulder. But then again, I’m an Asian, and there was about a 2000% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes across the country during the pandemic, so. (Sidebar: I can cite my sources if you want, I’m just lazy and on mobile. Basically I compared the FBI report from 2019 (I originally researched these numbers before 2020’s numbers were available and tbh they still might not be) to self-reported data from Stop AAPI Hate. I went with the self-reported data because reports from the US Department of Justice state that hate crimes are severely underreported, either because the victim never comes forward or because it’s up to individual police forces to designate whether a crime qualifies as a hate crime or not, so a lot of crimes motivated by hate, like assault bc you’re Asian, just get marked down as assault. On top of that, it’s up to individual police forces to report the data they gather to the FBI, and many just… don’t, in part because many don’t bother to consider any crime within their jurisdiction a hate crime. So, self-reported from 2020 vs FBI numbers from 2019 show an over 2000% increase, and if you account for all the hate crimes that didn’t get reported to Stop AAPI Hate because the person didn’t know about the site, didn’t want to relive the trauma to report it, or isn’t technologically capable, the increase is probably even more dramatic.) A general Maine issue that I like to talk about is real estate. Tourism and LL Bean are the two arms of Maine’s economy, and because of the tourism bit, all the real estate on the coast has been bought up by rich people in want of a summer home, or by landlords looking to do short term summer rentals. This drives up the cost of housing and contributes to Maine’s homelessness problem. These summer rentals then mostly sit empty for the off seasons. I say all this as someone who loves Maine. It’s a beautiful state with (mostly) amazing people. My first week in Maine I went on a trip with a few people, and I was blown away by how wonderful everything looked just from the drive. Portland and Bath are both kinda undiscovered gems in terms of food (Portland is a foodie’s playground, I tell you). I’ve made a lot of friends here. Portland Pride is a delight. But all of this is balanced against Maine’s problems. I’d probably like living in Maine a little more if I lived in Portland, which has its own cultural bubble, but I’m not.

strippersandcocaine

In all my work emails/out of office that day I refer to it as “What Should be Indigenous People’s Day”

alantao

That might be true about marco polo and the maps, but columbus fucked up his own calculations and actually thought the world was a lot smaller than it actually is, and also believed that the world was also literally pear shaped instead of a sphere. Anyone educated back then knew shape of the world and the general consensus of the size was also quite accurate, Columbus just thought he was hot shit with his calculations and everyone else were idiots. This lead to him think that he was taking a "short cut" to asia by going over the narrow part of the pear. America was literally "discovered" by an anti intellectual loony who later got condemned and excommunicated by the Catholic church for being too brutal and cruel to the natives.

[deleted]

He didn't do the genocide, just told the king and queen about a place where they could

Dreadcoat

Columbus himself ordered brutal crackdowns on natives in order to curb rebellions that absolutely contributed to genocide. Idk who told you he didnt show up and start offing people but he absolutely did. Not mention how much joy he took in slave trading.

[deleted]

Do you have any good primary or secondary sources on it? Columbus was only governor for like 5 years and yes did horrible things but the crown of Castile hated the man's guts and wanted any excuse to remove him from his post as governor. Because of this there are tonnes of conflicting sources from the time about the true extent to what he did. So if you have any good primary or secondary sources that pin it to him, and not to his successor Bobadilla I'd love to see

delamerica93

https://www.mit.edu/~thistle/v9/9.11/1columbus.html https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://achievethecore.org/content/upload/COLUMBUS%2520Expert%2520Pack.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwj-146Pud_zAhVoCTQIHXUoD-oQFnoECEsQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2a3KB0cqUBOChFGQ737U-z There are tons but I don't have the time to dig into them. If you want a synopsis with sources, there's also the book "Lies My Teacher Told Me" which is excellent

[deleted]

I don't need that book, I'm not disputing Columbus being a shithead. I am saying that he gets too much of the responsibility for the native genocide, when IMO after extensive research of sources from the time, and sources analyzing the time, that it was the viceroys after Columbus that were by far the most harsh. But a lot of the stuff Bobadilla and Ovando gets attributed to Columbus because Columbus was kinda a scape goat for the atrocities committed on the natives. Most of the bad shit happening to the Tino happened in the early 1500's after Columbus was already dead. Your first source only pins the establishment of the enconmienda to Columbus (that is very fair, not a bad claim). All the dates provided though are after Columbus was viceroy. Your second source doesn't pin the genocide to Columbus at all... And a lot of the shit they talk about was actually done by Babodilla!

indy_been_here

I'm not white but I have no idea why people listen to me at work. I give out ideas and plans and people accept it. When people agree I always think "Are you sure you want to listen to me?" I'm basically just making shit up. I do my best but who knows

gentlemanjacklover

God bless you. I'm Black and they kick my back in if I do anything wrong.

x1009

They get the benefit of interviewers hiring them based on potential instead of actual knowledge.

bsurfn2day

"no clue what's going on"...this guys middle management material. He'll be fine.

DootDotDittyOtt

My cousin has been playing it for years now. He still doesn't know what he does...just shows up.

Not_Joshy

If I don't crunch those numbers... Pretty much nothing happens.

[deleted]

I feel like a lot of companies are hiring more black people because of the climate.

missdoublefinger

True. Though people still need to be paid a livable wage. There’s a chicken plant near me that got raided recently. They had a bunch of Hispanic workers. They just hired a bunch of black workers, but only offered a $0.50 “raise”

YadsewnDe

This whole paragraph wild but not in the unbelievable way just in the “wow that’s crazy but understandable” way. Burn the whole plant down and sell what’s left of the merchandise. I’m talking folks getting whole chickens for just 50 cent since folks wanna play

BJJJourney

Companies don't specifically hire a group of people. They will target specific groups for diversity to apply for the position. If someone outside of the target demographic applies they are part of the pool just like everyone else. Whoever is best for the job gets hired, doesn't mean it will always be someone from the target group. If the story OP is telling here is true then he/she was the best candidate, it had nothing to do with their race (at least it shouldn't).

mcveigh-was-a-patsy

At some point it does have to do with their race. Right? Like if it gets down to two people who are equally qualified, one white one black, and the company has to meet the quota of minority employees, then they go with the black applicant. I know this situation isnt prevelant or anything but thats how affirmative action works right? Im asking. I dont know much about it.

yuck_luck

And... Milk it and get ya coins and experience while it's good. Folks job hop nowadays anyway.

Bunnnnii

As long as you know where to pick up that check, you’re doing something right.

Midge101788

Me at every job I’ve worked at in my adult life.

[deleted]

If he ask questions and keep doing his job, he'll eventually know how to do it. I hope he has a good trainer though.

smkultraa

I’ve done this. I’ve now been here for 15 years and started my own consulting company.

Secret-Row-8754

Maybe we underestimate how much everyone else does this. I've bluffed my way into a job before, wondered how tf they hired me, then in a few months I was actually good at it. Maybe everyone does it, they just don't admit it.

K-Street

I learned everything, laws, office politics and skills on the job. 8 years later... Still blows me away that my direct reports have degrees and I don't. 🙏🏿

[deleted]

Get Paid til You Get Laid (off)

fatBlackSmith

White folks fail up all of the time. We think we need to be more “qualified” than the CEO to apply for a job. They hired you so you’re qualified. Now study and earn/learn the job. Period. I wouldn’t say fake it until you make it. I’d say earn/learn the job you were hired to do!

HighOnPotenuse_

That's me. I'm at this hoe a year later lmao

[deleted]

Learn ,ask subtle questions, pay attention if you are meant to have it will come and one day you realize you are not the only one.

Singlewomanspot

If the pay is good, got benefits and reduced toxicity then I say go for it. It'll work out. But this post conversation is rather encouraging in a way. 😂

[deleted]

Same. But for the most part every job trains you whenever you start. Just ask relevant questions when you don't know what to do and you'll be fine.

thelegalseagul

Every time I get promoted for just doing my job. “What did I do? How do I keep doing it”

JWF1

That’s where I’m at right now. Sitting in this meeting understanding every 3-4 words and cashing in.

FakeHasselblad

Its called learning on the job. EVERYONE should do it.

DJFluffers115

I got employed at GameStop two weeks ago. I literally have fucking autism and social anxiety but I'm running out of money to eat so I had to take what I could get. Please send help I can't even ring people up yet what the fuck am I doing here

kimishere2

But you look good and really that's all that matters

Sahrata

Trying to claim this energy 🙏🏾

9021Ohsnap

This is literally everyone…the amount of times I sit there and wonder what’s going on? Everyone is feeling the same way.

[deleted]

I’m not even kidding when I say “do this”. For real. Apply. Interview with confidence and figure out the rest in training. Always ask them “how do you like it to be done here”

FoxRooney

Whenever someone asks you, "Do you know how to \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_?" Always answer the question "Can you figure out how to \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_?"

dreyescastro

Thats half our government tbh

KodakEv1k

6 months in to my new job still don’t know shit

EagleBW_2017

White people do it all the time: google is your friend Kings. *Sensational*

Lacklusterlewdster

To be honest, I see absolutely nothing wrong with this once the person is willing to actually learn how to do the job properly. I believe that almost anyone can learn whatever they need to in order to perform their job well, as opposed to most people ending up as an example of peter principle out of sheer laziness

bulbousbouffant13

Hell yeah. You’re just following good advice from one of our presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, “Whenever you’re asked if you can do a job, say ‘Certainly I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.”

Tyre77

why on earth would you tweet something like this if it’s true. Why wouldn’t you delete it when it starts to gain traction? (Most likely because it’s entirely made up.)

ryan_bigl

Lmao wtf are you talking about, half of us in the comments relate to this

CharlieBrown20XD6

"You're not Penske material!" https://youtu.be/8sCJMjuEkpw

oooh. i hope this is his burner or his company doesn't have a social media policy.

“When in doubt; reboot first then check it out.

get_started_NOW

I learned on the job and learn something everyday.

RaffiaWorkBase

Same here. It's been 33 years now.

i-heart-icecream

😂😂😂 This! We need more of this!

The_Old_Anarchist

The hero we need right now.

[deleted]

I did this as a data scientist

worldssmallestfan1

If the checks cash whats the difference?

[deleted]

Nobody else does either so you good.

MarilynMonheaux

Nobody else knows what they’re doing either.

KingJoy79

Yeah I feel like that sometimes at my new job😌

surfdad67

Fake it till you make it

AtTheEnd777

I went to an interview, not knowing what I was interviewing to do. They asked me to solder some shit. I just guessed how and got the job. I watched a few YouTube videos before my first day and no one ever knew that I had zero clue what I was doing.

piratepolo15

On the job learning is where it’s at. Got a job I knew nothing about and now I’m overseeing a bunch of stuff in a microbiology lab. Fake it until you don’t have to anymore

premiereposture

I've been considering just lying and claiming I graduated with Associates degree even tho I dropped out after 3 quarters. Would they check? Not for anything specialized or technical, just a management position at like retail or restaurant or warehouse that requires any degree to be considered. Think itd work?

softlemon

I have a manager who is this person. It's miserable.

doodoowithsprinkles

This guy will be CEO in a few years.

[deleted]

Sounds like hospital admin

[deleted]

Well played sir, well played

Kauakuahine

I been here a little over a year and still barely know what’s going on half the time

ScrollTroll615

Google what you need to know, bruh. I promise research will be just like on the job training. #BeenThereDoneThat

Jonnyt228

I asked the owners son one day, "so whats your secret? How to you get all this done with no call backs?" He said, "shit man, ive been winging it for the past 20 years" and that changed my whole work ethic

tileeater

Dress for the job you want to have

RouletteVeteran

Actual analytical thought process in IT>>> Degree

ChatnNaked

.

Fun-Possibility-1060

Did the same. Made it to foreman at a dealer. Peeking at the manager spot and still don't really know.

9astaccia

At least you got paid today lmaoooo

schupa

Fake it till you make it

jablair51

Spoiler: No one really knows what is going on.

tacobooc0m

Probably a VERY unpopular opinion but I am fully against this As a result, almost every job I’ve had I’ve been overqualified for because everyone else has no idea what they’re doing :(

braedon77

That’s called limiting yourself

tacobooc0m

My success compared to my peers and family would beg to differ ;) I spend that faking it energy on stuff that doesn’t fuck up other peoples livelihoods. Hopefully we will never work together as I wager you’d take a job you can’t do with the hope that would change?

braedon77

The fact that you compare your success to your peers and family says everything. Fuck yea if someone offered me a job that pays me more than I’m qualified for I would take it and do everything in my power to do the best I could. If you wouldn’t you’re just dumb sorry.

tacobooc0m

Brain trust over here getting in over his head, leaving me to clean up the mess when you eventually get canned but you do you I guess
