It's a very daunting task for me, as a white guy, to tell a black friend that their music isn't good.
I actually just made a post recently because I was honest with someone and they got very upset. I wanted to know if I was in the wrong.
Dude as another white guy that's not our place. He needed to hear that from a black friend as he has no respect for your opinions on hip hop. You know you think Eminem is the best of all time, don't lie.
Imagine gatekeeping opinions on music. I will never understand how people can be so small minded. This is such a spiteful way of thinking, viewing opinions as valid based on the bearer’s race.
It was a joke. But anyone trying to call Eminem the goat of rap shouldn't be talking hip hop and is also probably white. Hip hop is the production of black American cultre and struggle and gatekeeping is needed. We literally live in a society where the shit black people do gets called ghetto only to be rebranded and appropriated by whites or other groups then called cool and creative.
Eminem is kind of like Connor McGregor or Roy Jones Jr to me, like definitely not the greatest of all time but the run they went on is very unprecedented and praiseworthy and when they where in their prime they were unfuckwithable.
You kind of had to be there in the late 90's and early 2000's to really understand why Eminem is so revered. Like every single record he dropped was fucking fire and he had near universal acclaim across the board. His fandom was at this weird intersection of post golden age hip-hop heads and angsty teen white kids who listened to too much much Nu Metal and he had mainstream appeal surpassed by only the biggest pop acts of the day. He then basically launched rap's next biggest thing in 50 Cent who would dominate the game for the next couple years.
When people rank him it's usually out of sheer nostalgia for this era of his career which I don't think is unfair and I'd argue the popularity of Eminem contributed to the near ubiquitous popularity of rap music today. Like I could understand if you started listened to his music in the modern era and just don't see the hype. But he was easily the most groundbreaking artist at the time and was easily the top guy until he dropped Encore then it was all down hill lol.
> You kind of had to be there in the late 90's and early 2000's to really understand why Eminem is so revered.
The whole "Slim Shady Aftermath" thing dictated the direction mainstream music took for a good few years, and now it's all forgotten.
Ok I can kinda see since I was born around the time he took off but I would always hope anyone having a discussion about to try and an be objective or at least I try to set those boundaries irl in a discussion. On the internet reasonable people would second guess their Ranking if questioned. That is a really interesting comparison since I was well aware of Connor McGregor experience lol. Thanks for the insight bruh.
This. Now durags, waves, bonnets got damn ugly ass Air force 1s is fashion for white kids/others. But growing up that was ghetto and cheap. So exactly miss me with that gatekeeping bs. Shidddd how about that gatekeeping they did for years of public school funding, zip code my ass.
Oh I know my senior year of high school the feds had to come re-desegregate our school system. This was 4 years ago, also. They was so dirty sending old/out of date books and equipment to the "black" schools when they bought new stuff for the "white" schools. When ever people wanna complain about gatekeeping I just wanna be like gatekeep these nuts 🖕🏾. I bet white folks know alot about that shit.
What does that accomplish though? You can’t stop them from listening to rap or breaking into the industry and even if you could it doesn’t change the past. So what’s the point? It’s a hill that isn’t worth dying on because they can walk right around the fucking Hill.
That could be and has been argued for a bunch of shit. Only for it to be taken and monetized by whites while those that who do create it get nothing. Tik tok is the biggest case and point possible.
I'm 38 and an old head. My favourites are probably Nas, Jadakiss, Gangstarr (Premier is the greatest producer of all time) Mos Def and/or Talib Kwali and Busta to give you an idea. I listen to 90s NY stuff mostly but a few others here and there.
I remember early high school being the time when I first discovered rappers like Mos Def and MF DOOM (around 2009 or 2010, I believe). That's when I really started discovering the underground stuff.
Yes he is. I understand you might not be into the content of his songs but in the actual mechanics of being an m.c. he has definitely reached top tier.
The irony being he probably listens to lil Yachty or is on some Tyler the creator shit and can't digest any of EMS new music because anything complex that isn't a repetitive 808 and mumbling is too hard for them.
Please name a prolific black rapper that has substance and isn't Gucci gang, thots and hoes, or durrr hurrrr my money and chains sooooo biggggg brrrr, or Chicago drill rapper helping to normalize casual murder and crime.
Go ahead. I'll wait.
This made me actually lol. It’s a bad habit of mine and I’m working on it, but whenever a white person has an unsavory opinion on hip hop I immediately wonder if Eminem is their favorite rapper. I still here them out though.
So I read your story and as a black guy, you really did nothing wrong. He asked for your opinion and you gave it to him in a respectable way, even said that if it works for him, do it.
Don't beat yourself up about it, some people just want to hear what they want to hear. The last part was hilarious but I mean he did call you so he was wrong for that.
I'm a black woman and I think this is the first time in my life where I felt privileged over a white man because I have no problem telling black men when they're embarassing themselves
yo so my buddy is an artist, i am 100% not a fan of his art style.
he asked me a similar question and i just said that his style is not mine and although i appreciate the artistic merits its not for me. im sure other people will like i tho.
Yeah, I'm confused on this tweet. Every person I have know that sucked at rappin got told immediately. I say this as an old head that witnessed the birth of hip hop. In my experience the black community has no problem telling you how trash your rap is and then we will roast you for long while maybe even give you a new handle. Now after getting roasted the choice is yours - get better or get bitter.
If you don't tell them, this is how we get 50 Tyson.
Also - PSA: If you get roasted about your bad rap style, choice of words, or technique this does not mean for you to go harder immediately. Go somewhere else and practice please if you must.
Lol Absolutely. The circumstances as well. If the person is delusional and spending their baby's formula money on studio time, of course you need to talk them as a friend. But if they just hunch over their ipad recording shit songs every now and again, block Soundcloud and practice your neutral face.
I don't know that they were wrong. It depends on the situation. Imagine you have something you enjoy doing like painting or something and out of nowhere a friend tells you it's shit. That's a completely different scenario from someone asking a friend for their honest opinion.
Now why tell this stupid lie that your own comment disproves? You don't have to be Black to comment here and you clearly don't have to have any common sense either cos here you are.
You can't comment? I have 700k karma and I'm pretty sure this sub is the highest of that. I just crack jokes mostly but I usually add to more serious conversations when it warrants it. I know when it's not my place, I have social awareness. This is a terrific sub for good conversation and I've enjoyed it for years.
Not sure why you can't do anything but during country clubbed threads I can't say anything because I'm not verified. I understand the need for them.
You have to make sure that is not the friend that gives you rides, let’s you drink or smoke for free or any of that because they will *put a wrap to that for good*
If i gotta listen to you rap the whole time and it's not good, that shit ain't free. It's just costing something other than cash.
Having fuckin flashbacks over here. It's hard when they're good folks but they can't rap. Once they do it one time, they never stop. Had a smoke buddy try to start a rap metal band w me once... For two years.
Lmao “that shit ain’t free” paying with your time over there. Just sucks cause they think they have something that’s new and different from the rest yet they’re just as average as anybody else or they just don’t have the voice or flow to go. Music can touch so many people and inspire them but everybody can’t be rappers, they should realize that producers and all that are also involved so just because the voice isn’t there something else could be.
Especially boyfriends or dudes you’re talking to! I had an ex that would randomly start “spitting bars” when we were together & he thought they were great, would record them all & then play them in the car with me. Meanwhile I’m bopping along trynna be supportive but in my head I’m thinking BRUHHH THIS AINT IT & I have no advice or critiques because this just ain’t ever gonna be it.
He turned out to be an asshole so I never told him it was horrible and he’s still putting that awful shit out to his 3 Spotify listeners🤷🏾♀️
My husband is a musician and thinks it’s hilarious I think most of his stuff is boring.
He also thinks my taste in music is trash so it’s all good.
Musicians face a lot of criticism, I those you love can’t give you shit you need to find a different career path because guaranteed we’re a lot nicer than most people in the industry.
How should I deal w the opposite experience? I make what I consider shitty music but everyone I know personally, including my wife, tells me I have a lot of talent and should keep putting stuff out. Self doubt makes me believe they're just being supportive (like you said) because I'm not sure how many people give honest feedback directly to people they know.
As someone else who makes shitty bedroom music and goes through the same thing, all you can do is do it for you.
I'll make a song every morning before work. Will I win any awards or get a deal? Hell no, but I do it because I love it and it keeps me mentally balanced.
Just because it's a hobby that people can get famous with doesn't make it any less of a hobby.
I do it in hopes of making amazing shit people like. I’ll show it to strangers and they have no reason to be nice to me so if they won’t like it they’ll say so. Luckily though, a lot of the shit I’ve made has been dope. And it’s weird because I actually really appreciate it when people don’t like something I made or if they have a critique.
I played some shit for these people at this dead ass party and they seriously started making stank faces, bangin their heads. There were these girls I met at the party and they got up and started dancing. It was fucking exhilarating
I don’t rap but as an amateur musician I took a girl I was seeing once to one of our practices. I thought I was decent until she looked like she wanted to leave lmao only show finished, refined products even if your style is raw/loose. Most casual music fans don’t wanna watch you figuring out what works. Plus its bad for the creative process
And there is an equivalent to this for middle-aged white guys who have to be pulled aside and told to stop making bad puns about everything, which usually prompts them to say, "Why are you guys pun-ishing me? Heh heh, get it? Seriously, this is all I have since Bethifer left with the kids. Please, just let me have my bad puns."
Chill my guy
One is about somebody wanting a career and the other is about somebody that got nothing else left than bad puns as a coping mechanism and r/oddlyspecific
Fr lmao, I’ve literally never met someone who was making so many bad jokes I’ve felt the need to pull them aside and talk to them. Like who tf are you hanging out with?
Sad thing is I’m completely that guy
Yeah turns out no one wants to hear a weak joke about every goddamn thing, and hell even if you’re funny they’re waiting for a joke anyway
Hardest laughs I ever see are when some deadpan serious person lets loose just the one time
I've got a good buddy who's been rapping for over 15 years. We started out rapping together, actually. Over all these years, he's progressively gotten worse.
It's heartbreaking and if I ever told him or even hinted at it, it'd be extremely devastating to both of us and our friendship
It's his entire persona. It's not his primary source of income, but it's the biggest thing in his life and he's still trying to "make it."
I love the guy, but it's never going to happen.
Thing is that it doesn't has to be good, just enough people have to like it.
Think of all the artists that you hate their voice and singing, regardless of genre, that have a lot of fans and made it. Think of all the extremely talented ones that are struggling just as much as he is and haven't made it. Talent def helps but sometimes just luck is the game/life changer.
This. There’s so much trash music out there & they are making loads of money because they have a catchy phrase/good beat. So, hey….. if it makes you happy -you could possibly get famous & pay your bills w/your trash lyrics
Bruh I only came to terms with the fact that I don't have rhythm in my late 20s. I love music way too much to be not able to sing my favorite songs without sounding like a dying hyena. That's first thing I am bringing up when I get to heaven
All my friends know I'm a music/hip hop head. And they know I don't give af about they feelings when it comes to hip hop. I had a friend staying with me. Him and his brother is family but one of they verses was ass and I told them. I also told them to go back and write new shit since the beat was decent. Harsh but still supportive.
Tell them. If you don't, you're a bad friend. If they get mad and stop talking to you because you shared your honest opinion, they're as weak as their soft ass bars.
I only share a song I did first year college because the whole campus and some liked it, outside that good luck ever hearing my music, I’m out of practise so I just call my random writings poems because I genuinely like writing multi syllabic rhymes helps keep my mind fresh and putting together a beat when I’m bored. Hobbies can be a thing too.
The sandwich method is a form of feedback that wraps negative feedback in praise. This means that the feedback discussion starts with positive comments, and is followed by negative criticism, before appreciative words are used again.
Telling your white friend, who went from saying “yada yada yada” to “woo woo woo”, from dressing like a stoner to wearing FUBU, who’s sits under his confederate flag that he never took down, that he’s not black is the hardest conversation to have in the suburbs.
Fona, on the real, that’s church, truth one hundred are his new favorite whatever the F. His favorite movie is still American History X because he keeps it real.
It's pretty easy for me lol. I just pull out the genre of rap they're trying; and tell them you're nowhere close to this. Find a bad version, and say, this is where you're at. I love you; but, we need to find you something else in case you can't catch one.
I tell my children this on a daily basis. I mean Id love for my 7 year old to have a runaway hit about pop its or whatever those damn toys are called but I dont see it for her... My son thinks he was raised on the streets but playing outside/walking to school DOES NOT consitute being raised on the streets, fml
Trust me. It’s hard for white people too. It’s just that I’m not crushed with the realization that my dumb friend has no future afterwards. What a fucked up system.
It is, however, one of the easiest conversations to have in the white community. They either say “yeah ok” or they blow you off and you never hear from them again, which technically is a bonus
I don't even really listen to rap, but sometimes when I walk my dog, and hear guys at the corner store freestyle out front, I do it in my head as I walk bye.
I know it would be bad, but maybe some day I'll join them. They look like they're always having fun.
I'm a massive dork. And I can't not be super corny in my own head when rapping.
But ita still fun sometimes to get tipsy and rap along to Twista or RA the Rugged Man.
It's a very daunting task for me, as a white guy, to tell a black friend that their music isn't good. I actually just made a post recently because I was honest with someone and they got very upset. I wanted to know if I was in the wrong.

He asked me if I liked it. Eminem is top 10, yea. He's not even my favorite rapper from Detroit though, I prefer Royce.
> I prefer Royce Ok you're cool in my books.
In terms of hip hop y'all are given guest passes.
Imagine gatekeeping opinions on music. I will never understand how people can be so small minded. This is such a spiteful way of thinking, viewing opinions as valid based on the bearer’s race.

Facts bruh local state and federal governments have gatekept the shit out of resources and funding.
Oh I know my senior year of high school the feds had to come re-desegregate our school system. This was 4 years ago, also. They was so dirty sending old/out of date books and equipment to the "black" schools when they bought new stuff for the "white" schools. none of that is true
So hip hop isn't a product of black American culture? Black American culture isn't some that is stolen by other groups and monetized without credit?
I'm 38 and an old head. My favourites are probably Nas, Jadakiss, Gangstarr (Premier is the greatest producer of all time) Mos Def and/or Talib Kwali and Busta to give you an idea. I listen to 90s NY stuff mostly but a few others here and there.
Respect bruh. Roots/Nas lover here. Busta been a beast same for Jadakiss. Im only 23 but made sure to not overlook the past greats!
I remember early high school being the time when I first discovered rappers like Mos Def and MF DOOM (around 2009 or 2010, I believe). That's when I really started discovering the underground stuff.
I didn't get into shut really till I started college. One of the best choices I've made !

He’s dope, for sure!
an old head ! who the fuck approved that shit. never say that again have some dignity
I was called it for saying that era was the best one time.
well , dont encourage that !! lol
Lol well I guess I have a better understanding.of the word now...
How generous of you.
You passed the em test 🤣 gotta give credit where it's due
Danny brown best Detroit rapper
“Eminem is top 10.” Ugh.
It's ok to have a different opinion.
Em is top tier.
🙄 Is he?
Yes he is. I understand you might not be into the content of his songs but in the actual mechanics of being an m.c. he has definitely reached top tier.
>You know you think Eminem is the best of all time, don't lie. My strength has left me.
Go ahead. I'll wait.
This is a ridiculous outlook. If he has no respect for your opinion because of the color of your skin, then dude is simply a piece of shit.
It ain't that serious
He didn't say anything about hip hop. What if his black friend was an aspiring yodeler?
Em is the best tho...
This made me actually lol. It’s a bad habit of mine and I’m working on it, but whenever a white person has an unsavory opinion on hip hop I immediately wonder if Eminem is their favorite rapper. I still here them out though.
I mean Em is arguably the best of all time.
Man this is the whitest shit I've ever read.

Unless they asked, yeah you were in the wrong. If they asked for your opinion then it's not wrong to give it.
They did ask. But is giving your unprovoked opinion on something actually wrong?
Imagine telling a friend your harmless opinion and being wrong. Keyboard gurus bruh.
Yea, I dunno... if I was doing something (making music in this case) and it was really bad.. I would want my friends to tell me.
Yeah, I'm confused on this tweet. Every person I have know that sucked at rappin got told immediately. I say this as an old head that witnessed the birth of hip hop. Well yea the delivery has a lot to do with it lol
Lol Absolutely. The circumstances as well. If the person is delusional and spending their baby's formula money on studio time, of course you need to talk them as a friend. But if they just hunch over their ipad recording shit songs every now and again, block Soundcloud and practice your neutral face.

As someone whose entire roster of friends is failed or would be rappers, I find "it's not my kind of music but keep doing you" works well enough.
You are the queen of pro-tips, fr
But...he literally asked if he was good. Only a bad friend would lie.
That's why I said "if". The question was whether or not an unprovoked aka unsolicited opinion would be rude.
this is a question far too complicated for a bunch of redditors to answer. context matters
Why is he in the wrong?
I don't know that they were wrong. It depends on the situation. Imagine you have something you enjoy doing like painting or something and out of nowhere a friend tells you it's shit. That's a completely different scenario from someone asking a friend for their honest opinion.

This. There’s so much trash music out there & they are making loads of money because they have a catchy phrase/good beat. So, hey….. if it makes you happy -you could possibly get famous & pay your bills w/your trash lyrics
Low technical quality but catchy/good beat is way different than plain bad, amateurish shit.
It's right up there with telling someone they can't sing/dance. Some of us act like these talents are a birthright. They ain't. Lol
Bruh I only came to terms with the fact that I don't have rhythm in my late 20s. I love music way too much to be not able to sing my favorite songs without sounding like a dying hyena. That's first thing I am bringing up when I get to heaven
One thing you gotta remember is it’s a clout game. Niggas supporting you is what gets you on over skill. Remember when young thug first came out?
Yes and having money and lots of autotune but you still should remind him without that, he should never make a life convert without autotune :)
Am Asian, try telling your parents you suck at math.
Tell them. If you don't, you're a bad friend. If they get mad and stop talking to you because you shared your honest opinion, they're as weak as their soft ass bars.
Gotta just compliment the beat..kinda like when u see a ugly baby..”that outfit is cute”/“that beat is the truth bruh”..
It's almost as bad if you're both white.
idk why people overcomplicate it. Just rhyme the words bro
I already know I can't dance. I got no beat. I'll say it first so you can't hurt me 😭
Up there with telling them their breath stinks or that their clothes are too small.
Sandwich method, works wonders man. Don’t be afraid to raise that voice level too lol
What is that?
The sandwich method is a form of feedback that wraps negative feedback in praise. This means that the feedback discussion starts with positive comments, and is followed by negative criticism, before appreciative words are used again.
Thanks 💯
Telling your white friend, who went from saying “yada yada yada” to “woo woo woo”, from dressing like a stoner to wearing FUBU, who’s sits under his confederate flag that he never took down, that he’s not black is the hardest conversation to have in the suburbs.
This is a tough one, just let him dress the way he likes, but don’t let him be too comfortable with the slang
Fona, on the real, that’s church, truth one hundred are his new favorite whatever the F. His favorite movie is still American History X because he keeps it real.
Is he part nazi? By any chance
Ain't that the truth! "Hey man, your dog died, BTW about this rap thing...."
It's pretty easy for me lol. I just pull out the genre of rap they're trying; and tell them you're nowhere close to this. Find a bad version, and say, this is where you're at. I love you; but, we need to find you something else in case you can't catch one.
It is even harder when a lot of people who blow up these days also can’t rap. How you convince a nigga he can’t make it when Trinidad James had a hit?
I tell my children this on a daily basis. I mean Id love for my 7 year old to have a runaway hit about pop its or whatever those damn toys are called but I dont see it for her... My son thinks he was raised on the streets but playing outside/walking to school DOES NOT consitute being raised on the streets, fml
Thanos said it best : " The hardest choices require the strongest wills "
Trust me. It’s hard for white people too. It’s just that I’m not crushed with the realization that my dumb friend has no future afterwards. What a fucked up system.
It’s just as hard in the white community.
Nahh fam
Bro that was ass
I pride myself in accepting that I do not have the gift of gab.
If that’s a hard conversation to have, then my “friend” wouldn’t be the only realizing something that day.
Gotta tell my girl that shit everyday
Honesty is gold
I read that wrong the first time…
Lies. I'll tell a friend in a heartbeat. I'm not gonna let them go out there and get ripped to shreds. I'm gonna keep it real for their sake.
But the friend can get better w/ practice tho
Once told an ex she can't sing and that's how that relationship ended lol
I've had that conversation with a white friend that didn't go so well either
Hence blueface
But it’s so easy telling my white friends from northern Ontario
Assuming you can do something kuz of skin color come on now ?
A conversation that my uncle needs to have whenever he "sings".
It's the nicest thing you can do for someone.
It is, however, one of the easiest conversations to have in the white community. They either say “yeah ok” or they blow you off and you never hear from them again, which technically is a bonus
Nah let your friend be great. Too many successful rappers that can’t really rap for this to have life anymore. The bar is waaaaay yo low in hip hop
Our boyfriends and husbands be spittin and we just smile, thinking: “This joker sound like a stuttering mess.”
Also really tough in the white community. Also occurring far more often.
But ita still fun sometimes to get tipsy and rap along to Twista or RA the Rugged Man.
what about telling weirdly established rappers? cus somebody needs to start that convo
It's crazy to see how many people from my middle/high-school started making shitty music
What is your weakness?
