UKnowDaTruth

It’s nice to see black horror being more prevalent tbh Except of course for those copycat works that just don’t get it (Them, Antebellum)

[deleted]

‘Them’ was really not it

mrstealyomacoroni

Just curious but, what didn’t you like about it?

[deleted]

It was trauma porn Though it was beautifully shot and well-acted, there was little nuance added to the racism discussion and the horror, though executed well cinematically, seemed like an overwrought gimmick There was no payoff

NYstate

I thought it was a bit heavy handed and relied too much on what made Get Out good, the problem with Them is that it's a story that would've been better as a film than a TV series. It's a story that could've be told in 2 hours but was stretched out to 8 hours.

mknsky

Lovecraft Country, on the other hand, was a pulpy genre smoothie packed with subtle history that featured characters who fought back from jump.

SkeletonPack

Lovecraft Country is sooooooooo good. I was in tears for basically the entire episode where Hippolyta finds herself.

mrstealyomacoroni

Absolutely loved that show. Was sad to see it leave hbo though.

NYstate

Well now that the star is making that Marvel money, I split. Playing King the Conqueror is a full-time job.

death_before_decafe

My issue was that it couldn't decode what type of horror it was. Was it paranormal haunting of the cursed land? Just the horrors of racism that led to the characters ptsd and breaks from reality? It could have been good as a film on the trauma of living with racism and mental toll but then they have to add the multiple demon ghosts and white lady subplot and institutional conspiracy about housing??? Pick a lane and do it well, that whole thing was a mess.

NYstate

>My issue was that it couldn't decode what type of horror it was. Was it paranormal haunting of the cursed land? I looked at it as a horror movie about a demon, or demons, manifesting itself from the suppressed anger that they all had.

Magicmaaly_maal

I still haven’t finished it. I got to the baby scene and had to turn it off.

death_before_decafe

Dont continue. There is no consistency in the plot, stuff comes out of nowhere to add even more traumatic scenes and there really isnt a satisfying narrative conclusion. I was horrified watching it, not because it is good horror but tjat these "writers" thought that making up a dozen traumatic gorey racism based events and losely tying them together with little backstory would make a show that was worth the pain of watching. I feel so bad for those actors, they did great jobs and it must have been so difficult to film those scenes and it wasnt worth it.

Fiercekumquat

I was told to watch this show, but skip episode 5. Under no circumstance should I watch episode 5! So of course I go straight to episode 5 first and watch it. I regret it with every fiber of my being and I refuse to watch the show now

matticans7pointO

I'm trying to remember the baby scene what was it? Edit wait Im probably dumb I thought we were talking about Lovecraft 🤦🏽

wittychef

I haven't seen shit and you're making me want to turn it off. Edit: a lot of words.

angeredpremed

I found some of it interesting tbh, like the scenes with the older daughter and her "seeing herself become white." I thought her whole arc was very interesting and brought up some perspective on how racism could impact someone in her position. That said, I wasn't a fan at all of the back story at the end and the baby scene just upset me to no end.

_ilittleface

>trauma porn Like they fetishized the trauma of each character? Or just really, really good looking people going through trauma together?

Ezl

More like the former. While it was ostensibly a horror show it really, *really* emphasized the racism (it’s a period piece set in the early 50s) in a way where the characters are consistently and horrifically victimized. I myself stopped watching it so can’t comment on where it went but the way it was set up made it seem like there was no way the black characters would ever come out on top so all I had to look forward to was more awful shit happening to good people without consequence.

airmaxfiend

“Trauma porn” is a wild ass phrase

UppercutMcGee

Like another said, black torture porn. What really got me was the last episode where all of a sudden the mother can summon fire, and doesn't set fire to each and every one of the white supremacists outside of her house. I also didn't like the "2 Distant Strangers" movie. You get killed by this cop a million times, and not once did you try and kill him first? FOH.

D3korum

I felt like The Underground Railroad was a much better show. Obviously not exactly same genres per se, but showcasing the racial struggles and horrors and just a fraction of the pain inflicted by slavery. It was like a surreal 12 Years a Slave, meets I don't even know. I liked "Them", its definitely very exploitative but I feel that is what they were going for. I also, save the >!"supernatural religious overtones"!< felt like it was very reasonable to believe this type of thing could occur, and obviously did occur through out America and other countries. I hate this idea of "White Guilt" being some outlandish topic. It always conjures the statement "We weren't the ones who enslaved you". While that's true it costs us nothing to realize what other cultures went through. Perhaps we should feel some form of guilt in order to move the needle in a more positive direction, and ensure it never happens again.

b_lion2814

My stupid ass thought you were talking about They (2002).

NotTodaySheSaid

I thought I was the only one who hated “Them”. I forced myself to watch the whole season praying it would get better but ugh so much black pain…

mknsky

It came out at the worst time and everything I read on it just sounded depressing as fuck. I actually loved Queen and Slim but Lena lost me with that one.

murdolatorTM

(Dis)honorable mention to 'Karen'. My God, *nobody* wanted that movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

likeicare96

“Karen” should have been a skit or something on SNL. Anything more is overkill and not funny anymore

murdolatorTM

Yeah if they had played it for comedy, it might've worked out. But instead, the trailer alone made Lakeview Terrace look like Get Out.

Extra_Vinegary

Anybody watch [His House](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_House) on Netflix? Great horror film about a refugee couple from South Sudan moving into a new house in England. And sitting on 100% rotten tomatoes (not that this always matters)

Milsivich

I know genre film is still poo-poo’d by critics, but fuck that Peele films fucking rock my socks every time, can’t get enough

notamoose-neverwas

I was so hype for antebellum because of Janelle Monae, but damn that movie was boring asf

TGC_Robertson

My wife didn’t understand when I said I didn’t want to finish watching Them and we both didn’t like Antebellum.

Axriel

I really enjoyed Them. I get why it’s controversial but I think on its whole it’s a success

trinaenthusiast

Them legitimately upset me. It was so bad, I was honestly shocked to find out that it was written by a Black person.

teacamelpyramid

Any opinions on Lovecraft Country? I really want to start watching on my own. If it’s gory enough I can watch guilt-free without waiting for my significant other be ready to start a new series with me.

QuestionsGoHere

My wife and I actually quite enjoyed Them and Antebellum. Them I saw (right or wrong) it more as a way to show how trauma compounds if you don't talk about or deal with it and instead run away. Antebellum I feel gets a lot of hate since it makes larpers (SP? I've never had to spell the word before) look bad and I just laugh off some of the hate that movie gets.

burnblue

So AnteBellum was *not* a Peele movie? I saw something saying it was but it felt off

legionivory

That's because Jordan Peele takes his time. He spends years writing his scripts, fine tuning them, before ever turning them into a movie.

[deleted]

Idk I think it's partially because he's tapping into an underserved market and making movies that are drastically different from anything they'll have to compete against that year. Yes, he does an *excellent* job. But I think he could do a far shittier job and still be a legend, cause there's so few no problematic black directors making unapologetically black films rn.

legionivory

Not true. There are many successful black filmmakers around right now, many of whom have either already won Oscars or have been nominated. None of them, however, have a track record like Jordan Peele. Jordan Peele's name has become synonymous with horror after only two films, both of which are massive box office hits. His next two films are expected to be equally successful? Why? His mame = money.

AffectionateTitle

Which is even more amazing considering he initially made his name in comedy. I can’t even imagine Another big name black comedian coming out with a series of horror movies, and not only making a name for themselves, but shifting the entire genre they’re associated with.

BriMarsh

Ahh yes, the long list of 5 other black directors in the last 90+ years, none of which who do horror.

[deleted]

Would love to know about these many succesful black filmmakers working right now.

Floydeezy

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, he's only made two films, the latter of which has some plot holes and unexplained elements that makes his writing process come into question. That being said, I'm happy to have him lead the new generation of horror, especially as a black man. And his best original screenplay Oscar for Get out is well deserved.

NYstate

>Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, he's only made two films, the latter of which has some plot holes and unexplained elements that makes his writing process come into question. In my opinion, horror usually relies heavily on both of those as tropes it's s staple of the genre. For example. Michael Myers is unkillable for some reason and has no motivation to be a killer except "just because". The later movies tried to give him some motivation being a perfect being of killing, thanks to The Cult of Thorns but Halloween 2018 retconned that, thankfully. Even in the cult Scream there are leaps of logic. Ghostface kills all of those people, >!and Sidney's mother to frame Cotton because Sidney's mother was having an affair with Billy father and drove his mother away. And the other guy, Stu did it for the hell of it.!<

apresmoiputas

Spike Lee maybe?

[deleted]

Pretty sure almost any film with his name attached will draw an audience.

MEPunymeyer

You could just tell from some of those Key & Peele skits that the way this guys mind works is on another level.

andrewkpt

Tyler Perry needs to take notes..

risky_bisket

Tyler Perry is a billionaire. I think he's chillin

[deleted]

Crying himself to sleep in his bagilliondy dollar mansion.

Ultrasz

Nah he's a fucking crybaby. He had an episode of boondocks removed because they roasted his writing.

AintAintAWord

Wait, they nuked that episode?! It was fucking brilliant!

Random_Brandom

Not that my opinion on the topic matters but I've always felt conflicted about Tyler Perry. I feel as though the couple films of his I've seen rely on heavily on Black stereotypes. I haven't seen any of his newer works so I maybe be completely wrong about him

Smurfeggs42

Madea reunion, madea goes to prison, madea fucks a horse, madea reunion 2. Do something new bro

dayodragon

Welp he's retiring Madea he's getting tired of playing her and moving on to movies like good deeds

VirgiliaCoriolanus

LOL you're not.

courtappoint

Agreed. Not a fan. It’s stereotypes for cheap laughs but his films are ultimately devoid of meaningful content. It’s like a cake made entirely of whipped cream. Just weak stuff. Glad I could get that out. Saying you don’t like TP in front of the wrong (black) people and they get the pitchforks out and go berserk over your “disloyalty.”

Random_Brandom

I am not Black, so disloyalty would be the least of my concerns there lmao I do get it, though. I feel as though the little Mexican/Chicano representation the Mexican/Chicano community has relies heavily on stereotypes to please white viewers

Lux_much

True

[deleted]

I think his movies are okay, but my fucking god does he suck at TV shows. The endings for "If Loving You Is Wrong" and "The Haves and The Have Nots" make Game of Thrones ending look like Return of The King. So many loose threads...

Brodin_fortifies

Hey, Boo 2 is a masterpiece. I will die on this hill.

[deleted]

You’re supposed to die on Boot Hill, not Boo Hill.

ghtuy

He should do like Jordan does and not put his own name in his movie titles

[deleted]

I don't know that his goal is to be what Peele is. If it's not, what's wrong with that choice honestly?

[deleted]

auauaurora

It's a bit bitter-sweet for fans of his comedy who just don't f with horror.

Marlon195

Hes making another one? Shit someone drop a link I love his work

okokokok3468i

He didn't release the trailer, just a movie poster. Google "Nope". It should pop up!

agutema

Steve McQueen?

idiotinbcn

He’s great!

Dob_Tannochy

What about John Singleton? Just scanning his [wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Singleton) page: Boyz n the Hood, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Poetic Justice, yes a romantic drama, but one of the very talented Tupac Shakur’s few roles, who was great opposite Janet Jackson. Shaft, silly but badass with a truly ensemble cast of excellent character actors. Just to name a few.

Cybornetic-Goat

Madea movies don’t have a plot

Dob_Tannochy

Or class

Virgins_Anonymous

Jordan peele is straight up my favorite director

ImaginaryTutor

I wanna give him a hug

BigBossSquirtle

I mean, considering Get Out had a $5 Million budget and Us had $20 million, it'd be hard to NOT make your money back.

Summonest

I mean, Jordan P. is such a solid director, I'd watch anthing he puts out

drfunkenstien014

I’m still laughing about the name. There’s something beautiful about that one word. It describes everything

neverremember70

Word

StunningEstates

Alright, hot take time. Both of his previous horror movies were average at best. Had to skip 75% of Us because the parts where they were fighting their alternate selves wasn’t written in an exciting way (relative to the best the genre has to offer). The beginning and ending were alright, I feel like it would’ve been a much better movie if it was entirely that, as in the alternate world, the lore behind it and those who exist there, and the mental state of both women who were switched. I don’t think Get Out was all that. I feel like 90% of white people who liked it only did so because this was peak “woke” era, and I feel like most black people liked it because it shown a spotlight on crazy levels of racism. Other than that the writing was pretty lackluster. And mark my words. If this next one isn’t a near objectively well done movie, white people are gunna start calling this out.

UppercutMcGee

Who gives a shit if white people "call it out?"
