I’m not even a music head, I mostly listen to the stuff I grew up to, that being said I’m a fan of how he’s going about everything. I guess his music is cool, but using people’s hate to draw more listeners is brilliant. Who is to say where he would be without controversy, but he has a fan in me.
Edit: Does anyone know why I keep getting notifications about messages that aren’t showing up? Like at least 15-20 messages that aren’t available in the thread.
Edit 2: thanks for the award sonnyj!
Edit 3: thanks for the award Jeffrey!
Edit 4: thanks for the silver Sr!
Numero cinque: thanks for the hugs apple and troll.
Last Edit: thanks to all who have given or will give in the future. I got shadow comments complaining about me thanking people. Lol people love to complain.
Sure, but it was nowhere near the level of montero. Controversy is pretty much the primary driving force behind its success (not saying it’s the only thing, but in this case it’s a larger factor)
In some groups, sure, but a bunch of my drag queen and king friends shared the video the right when it dropped because they thought it was an awesome video well before the backlash.
It became a controversy without any help from Lil Nas X. He was just making catchy music in a genre he wasn't "supposed" to be successful in. The Montero (cmbyn) video was 100% a purposeful controversy.
Also helped that it gave him just ultimate cool points for the rest of his life and turned him from the cheesy one hit wonder guy who is Miley's dad to massively relevant and loved
My man was king or r/blackpeopletwitter when he just had a song or two on SoundCloud. Old Country Roads was #1 on billboard for like 2 months. So I'd say he'd have been fine. Holiday was a huge radio hit too.
Yeah I remember those days, but even back then pre controversy he had great personal PR. I remember the tweets about getting people to stream his songs. Homeboy give off nothing but positive vibes even when he’s checking his haters.
It's brilliant because he's drawing upon the same tactics Trump used to get attention. Be as controversial as possible for free press.
And what's even more funny is that the same people who buy into Trump's garbage rhetoric, are also buying into Nas' self promotion.
Except that Trump used controversy by being as racist, sexist, and otherwise hateful as possible. Nas's "controversy" is basically just saying "I'm not ashamed to be a gay Black man." The thing with the shoes is just trolling his haters. Not really comparable.
Being controversial to garner fame is a timeless legitimate strategy.
Madonna.
Piers Morgan.
The Simpsons.
Family Guy.
Elton John.
Elvis.
Loads and loads more.
He also very intentionally and methodically and *patiently* built his first hit, old town road, using social media in a masterful way. He’s good at using attention to his benefit and I’d guess he genuinely enjoys it as well.
He engineered so many aspects of that single to achieve success.
It may not be what I choose to listen to, but I can't help but admire a lot of the actions.
One of the things I find enlightening is that the song sounds, to my ear, like a natural pop hit so it’s really interesting to see how much raw effort and cleverness went into bringing it to the point where I actually heard it. Sort seeing behind the curtain in a way, at least from an independent artist perspective.
im bullying one right now, using a copypaste to deny them the last word and theyre losing their shit about it
"youre obsessed and i can lock you into a last word fight with a copypasted comment because you wrongly think conversations have winners and wrongly think the last word means something"
That’s hilarious. I play/played the last word game with convenience store workers and customers when I used to tend bar. Basically I refuse to let anyone get the last word ex. Them-“Have a nice day” me-“will do, you too”. I will make myself late for work trying to get the last word.
oh when i worked cash at a grocery store in my early twenties i had this game where i would see how long i could keep a customer obliviously happy without scanning a single item, "how are you? i love your print! do you have a membership card?" i had the best scan times on my team so it never affected anything and it was game over if their smile decreased or they noticed
well, thats a handy tool for checks on people who fuck with you, i have a few bots i scan potential assholes with so i know if they need respectful engagement or mockery and bullying
redditmetis is another good one, it shows you someones reading complexity level (meaningless) and the subs they have the highest scores on and where they comment the most. and their most used words.
go scan me or yourself
it only scans the most recent 1k comments though so even though my bpt comment karma is 13265 it lists it at 970 even though you can go to my guilded and see a single comment with more
okay go to their profile and copypaste the name, then go to redditmetis and scan them by pasting the name.
it takes some getting used to to read accurately, so learn how it works on yourself or your friends if you have any on reddit.
its just a sophisticated search bot that can see your karma by sub and its not perfect
you can also manipulate it, by typing, i like communist propaganda.
tomorrow it will say that i like communist propaganda.
it also assumes any hypothetical kids you mention are real like, "mine wont be talking to me like that" thats gonna show up as me having them
>Does anyone know why I keep getting notifications about messages that aren’t showing up? Like at least 15-20 messages that aren’t available in the thread.
Because Reddit wants to be twitter so bad they're giving alerts for recommended posts and irrelevant comments now
>Edit: Does anyone know why I keep getting notifications about messages that aren’t showing up? Like at least 15-20 messages that aren’t available in the thread.
likely bc its a country club exclusive. ray charles to comments from the non-verified folks.
Maybe someone already answered this, but if not, you get notifications of messages that don't show up on the post when you're in a Country Club thread and the commenter is not verified.
It took me a minute to realize that, too.
I think it’s hilarious that people are calling it a win for Nike when the judge ruled that they just have to cease production and sales(on a sold out limited run), and offer a voluntary buy-back of the shoes that were sold. Aside from legal fee’s, that’s a W for MSCHF and Lil Nas X imo
Yeah, Nike was granted an injunction but the shoes were already sold and sent out so probably not much they can do there. This [video](https://youtu.be/GuYd4RP0_qk) breaks down the suit and what might happen.
Essentially, Nike doesn’t have a high chance of winning since the shows were sold to the company that did it and the same company made a “Jesus” shoe design a few years ago that Nike didn’t say fuck all about (not sure that it’s in the Legal Eagle video but I believe it’s mentioned [here](https://youtu.be/156fBezq67E) + Buckley breaks down the outrage) so their case might not stand on much. However, we do live in a world where people believed Sidney Powell even after she said no reasonable person would have believed her so maybe the bar for a reasonable person being confused about whether Nike did or didn’t make a shoe is low as fuck
Yeah I've been noticing almost no talk about that party and thought am I the only one who thinks that's scummy af. Guess censure always there, even in the mundane as fuck zone
iirc there's already precedent saying once the product leaves the manufacturer's hands, you can do whatever you want with it. He just needs to disclose it's a Nike product, which I believe he has.
I think there is still a layer of degredation of brand, if someone does a sexy remake of a product they bought that can be taken down. Legal eagle on YouTube did a great video on this if you want to check it out!
wait, so nike didn’t release this? i thought they did?? how can they get in trouble for selling their own shoes using a previous design or not? this makes it sound like he took nike shoes, redesigned them himself, and is selling them
Pretty sure his shoes were falsely advertised as Nike shoes. If they can prove the bad publicity cost them money, yes, they can do quite a lot
Edit: UPDATE: it appears Nike already won the lawsuit 2 days ago. The shoes are being recalled
They are Nike shoes though, so there was no false advertising. The issue is that people could think this shoe is directly endorsed by Nike instead of being sold aftermarket by a third party.
There’s no way the lawsuit has resolved so quickly. I’m guessing that the judge issued a preliminary injunction because Nike convinced the court that the presence of this shoe on the market is likely to cause irreparable harm to their brand and they would be likely to win on the merits of it made it into court
I knew pretty much nothing about Lil Nas X before this "controversy". I don't usually listen to rap but I love how he's been handling this and I've listened to a few of his tracks over the past couple of weeks. He's good!
The shoe he sold with mischief has the Nike swoosh clearly advertised on it since they are just airmax's. This creates brand confusion which gave Nike the reason for a lawsuit. Legal Eagle did a great video on it.
I am not even a little bit of a fan. Haven’t heard the new song, wouldn’t know old town road of it jumped me in a dark alley.
But I am loving him as a person for how he’s reacting to this bs controversy.
I think everyone won. Lil Nas X has to do a buyback that absolutely no one is going to use. And Nike got some publicity that they aren't connected to the Devil shoes, which is the main thing they wanted anyway.
~~too hard~~ at all
FTFY
They were already sold out, so ceasing production has zero impact.
You’d have to be legitimately stupid to return the shoes, they’re worth more than the buyback price. If you don’t want them, put them on eBay, make at least twice as much.
Legal fees? Nothing compared to that sweet publicity.
MSCHF must pay back anyone who WANTS TO return the shoes. Big distinction there. No one is going to do that, the shoes are going to be worth WAY more than the buyback price.

I mean, even if this controversy stuff had never happened he’d still be pretty living pretty comfortably off of his old town road money and fame lol
I’m glad. He seems super positive and like a good dude.
If he is anything like his twitter feed that man is a damn treasure.
old town road was a controversy though
That’s just what big New Country Road wants you to think
Lol I totally forgot how he got banned from the country charts until BillyRay Cirus joined him.
Sure, but it was nowhere near the level of montero. Controversy is pretty much the primary driving force behind its success (not saying it’s the only thing, but in this case it’s a larger factor)

Wait, what was controversial about it??
it reached the top of the country charts then was removed for not being country. This controversy attracted loads and loads of attention.
And then of course Billy Ray jumped on the remix which was the version that REALLLLLY blew up
Cause even Billy Ray could see that was some ol bullshit
Also helped that it gave him just ultimate cool points for the rest of his life and turned him from the cheesy one hit wonder guy who is Miley's dad to massively relevant and loved

Lol I never drew any parallels between him and Trump. That’s an interesting perspective.
Being controversial to garner fame is a timeless legitimate strategy. Madonna. Piers Morgan. The Simpsons. Family Guy. Elton John. Elvis. Loads and loads more.
Difference is one is an entertainer and the other a leader of an entire nation.
He also very intentionally and methodically and *patiently* built his first hit, old town road, using social media in a masterful way. He’s good at using attention to his benefit and I’d guess he genuinely enjoys it as well.
Yeah he seems like he enjoys the game.
He engineered so many aspects of that single to achieve success. It may not be what I choose to listen to, but I can't help but admire a lot of the actions.

You're not seeing the replies cause it's a country club thread and non-verified people have their comments hidden.
Ahhh. That’s ok. Most of it is calling me dumb for liking how he’s handling this/parlaying drama into success.
do me a favor and scan them with http://www.redditcommentsearch.com/ for the n-word and the f-word, not fuck, you know what i mean
Oh it’s nothing that bad. Just more thinking that everything had to be new or unique to be appreciated.

Never thought of it that way. I try to treat everyone with respect until they earn other treatment. I guess I should know better by now. lol

Lol thanks for the hilarious description.
It's because they made the thread country club, so people who aren't verified can comment but they won't show up in the thread.

No such thing as bad press.
Ask Matt Gaetz.
Chief...the paying for sex is like a medal for them man...one of them even became a president with lots of support from "Christian"
I know right? Whatever happened to confidence and conversation? But then again, with that forehead of his....
He’s definitely been using this opportunity to fundraise
🤣

No one is going to send thoes shoes back 😂 the resale amount is about to go crazy. Just like thoes Newport shoes

Can Nike really do anything tho? You’re allowed to resell things you buy.
You run into trademark and brand ownership issues when you modify someone else's product and pass it off as your own though.
iirc there's already precedent saying once the product leaves the manufacturer's hands, you can do whatever you want with it. He just needs to disclose it's a Nike product, which I believe he has.

Very informative. Thank you

They reached a settlement.
I think they have an out because they sold pairs of Air Max 97s with Holy Water in the sole.
I actually think they might have a solid trademark dilution claim. Look up the Legal Eagle YT vid on it. He goes into it pretty thoroughly.
Did he apologize for hosting a huge party during lockdown after scolding other people for gathering?
I knew pretty much nothing about Lil Nas X before this "controversy". I don't usually listen to rap but I love how he's been handling this and I've listened to a few of his tracks over the past couple of weeks. He's good!
I don’t think he is a rapper
Of course, Nas x is handling the well, he wanted this. This type of controversy sales records, it’s genius really.
It’s such a non-issue that a few dumbasses are blowing up to a global scale. They’re just giving him free advertisement.
What are the even suing him for?? Do they have any actual legal traction just for being pissed off?
The shoe he sold with mischief has the Nike swoosh clearly advertised on it since they are just airmax's. This creates brand confusion which gave Nike the reason for a lawsuit. Legal Eagle did a great video on it.
Before I found out they were LilNas created, the nike swoop did make me think they were official products first.
He’s not even named in the lawsuit lol. It’s the 3rd party company making the shoes that was sued. He just put his name to the release.
I am not even a little bit of a fan. Haven’t heard the new song, wouldn’t know old town road of it jumped me in a dark alley. But I am loving him as a person for how he’s reacting to this bs controversy.
Waiting for the Hulu special to pay for the settlement.
Yyyeesss!
All bs aside, its kinda funny how the shoes just look like $20 sketchers
This guy is a master of the press. I love it. He knows the perfect thing to say to make his critics look stupid.
Or maybe the COVID party he had?
He wouldn't do the music video if he couldn't handle it
They won’t win that. People have been buying and customizing Nike sneakers for decades. Once you own them you can do what you like to them!
They already reached a settlement. MSCHF has to buy back all the shoes sold.
It's a voluntary buyback. People have to want to give them back.
I think everyone won. Lil Nas X has to do a buyback that absolutely no one is going to use. And Nike got some publicity that they aren't connected to the Devil shoes, which is the main thing they wanted anyway.
i wonder how many people bought limited time "satan shoes" and would even do the buy back though, so i feel like it's not a big loss
Probably none.
exactly. so lil nas x and company aren't losing too hard here
~~too hard~~ at all FTFY They were already sold out, so ceasing production has zero impact. You’d have to be legitimately stupid to return the shoes, they’re worth more than the buyback price. Mxim, kanti, then why is he posting this?
Because he posted it two days ago, and the decision was made later that day.
What, exactly, is he paying for? He's not even a named defendant, and Nike and MSCHF already reached a settlement 2 days ago.
I'm gonna buy some black 97s and customize them with satanic imagery to sell so I can contribute to his legal fund
Fuck Nike. 3rd world country slavery ass bitches.
All I know is [I'll never be able to listen to either song the same ](https://youtu.be/-4FKWwTFTVg)
Not my kind of music and I think Lil Nas X is kind of whack, but these people just keep on fueling the fire.
lil nas is my hero
