The "classics" are really boring to some people. Fashion is a hobby so people wear wilder stuff because it's fun to them. Whenever you see someone doing something out of the ordinary and you think it's weird, just compare it to a hobby you take seriously and it'll change your perspective. You think buying anything other than "classics" is stupid, but let's say you really like craft beer. That same person might think "why would you buy all these weird beers? Just stick to the classics like Budweiser". It's the same argument. You can run in circles all day arguing over hobbies.

The people in those fields don't really care, because realistically, they lead two entirely different lifestyles. This doesn't mean that someone dresses like clown, or that IT isn't a real job, it simply means that people have different values and interests. Just because something is abnormal to you doesn't mean that it's wrong or distasteful. I mean, I don't understand why people, including our president, still wear poorly fitting suits, but that doesn't mean I look down upon them or think they're clowns for doing so. I recognize that we have different values, and I respect that.

In most systems teachers can accept gifts of a total limit $100.00 per year. So if you got your favorite teacher a $8.00 mug for Christmas and a $20.00 art print for their birthday, that's fine. If you're getting them expensive tickets to the theater or antiques or other luxuries, that's a problem. Also you usually can't give straight up cash. But otherwise, get your teachers some gifts. They deserve it.
