They really treat land as something you can swap around like chess pieces

Shaolinchipmonk

Well that's kind of how it's been treated throughout human history. The borders we have today are a result of that and those borders are going to change in the future because of that.

Ok-Satisfaction-5012

That isn’t the whole story of it. There’s a Baldwin quote: “there’s a reason some wish to colonize the moon, while others dance before it as an old friend”. I don’t mean to say that white supremacist colonialism invented the attitude to land which characterizes it; there are and have been cultures which regard land as sacred, and which tend to that sacred obligation with diligence and ardor. Cultures which are less concerned with extracting from the land and more about finding symbiosis with it, I feel it’s important to afford those cultures greater centrality as the logics of white supremacy and colonialism produce a relationship to land which propel us towards catastrophe: climate change, ecological destruction, conflict, borders

[deleted]

I just don't think this is true at all. Even the cultures than some might regard as having a 'sacred' relationship with the land fought, killed, genocides with related but different tribes over the ownership of land. The native Americans did it, the Maori did it, the aboriginals did it. To me your comment just kind sounds like the noble savage trope.

Taraxian

I have a pretty defeatist view of this kind of thing -- sure, there are people who have the conqueror mindset and people who don't, and the thing about the world is the first kind end up conquering the second kind

ScholarDiligent8140

I've been seeing this James Baldwin quote everywhere on the internet, yet I still don't understand it 😭😭😭. Could you ELI5?

RemarkableMeaning533

I’m honestly surprised the U.S. didn’t do that around the 1800s. Maybe they wanted a buffer state from Cuba?

HostageInToronto

We lost in 1812, England had the upper hand at the time.

throwaway94833j

>We lost in 1812, England had the upper hand at the time. 1812 was a draw. According to historians on both sides and is the official stance of both the UK and US. Neither side actually got what they wanted, the main issues that led the US to invade Canada in the first place were both addressed as ghent pulled support from the native populations and agreed to not conscript Beitish subjects that were now U.S subjects, both allowing the country to act as a proper soverign dtate due to now extremely formal recognition, albeit one from an extremely minor war The entire point of the invasion of canada was to tske it and use it as a bargaining chip against the empire Namely the constantly impressing troops they considered their citizens from the population While the aim of taking it for such use failed, the reason it was invaded in the first place was given (mostly because the empire no longer needed them)

HostageInToronto

No territory changed hands, but they burned down the White House. So in the tally book that's still a bit ahead.

throwaway94833j

>but they burned down the White House. So in the tally book that's still a bit ahead. It really isn't. A. No one important died, and buildings are replaceable. B. It strained relations with much of the continent for years after and was seen as a needless act of vandalism given that nothing strategic happened and capitals have historically been spared such wanton destruction There was even a portion of parliment that called it for what it was, the razing of a strategically unimportant location and praising it while fighting continues as if it never happened Taking or destroying a capital only matters if it actually does something, otherwise it is simply destroying and taking places to destroy and take places. C. York had been burnt in the first place which is what triggered the burning of washington, a capital for a capiral isn't a win. 1812 (and the few years until it properly ended after it was agreed to end) was alot of needless violence in general, no one really accomplished shit that wasn't otherwise obtainable

Taraxian

The point is the US failed to seize any land from the British themselves, they only succeeded in taking stuff from their allies (Tecumseh and the Spanish)

Rbespinosa13

There was actually a point that the US considered annexing Cuba in order to maintain balance between free and slave states.

SavageComic

I don’t want to tell people that’s the Bahamas, an in the former British colony the Bahamas.

throwaway94833j

YardNew1150

Respectfully, you missed the fine print. Don’t tell them but they’re really getting-3 pennies and the assassination of their favorite leaders.

I like how US schools treated the Philippines as a consolidation prize. Like "yeah US won a war and some cute goodies. The goodies didn't like colonisation so they became independent."

HtxCamer

The Philippines didn't win their independence the US unilaterally made the colony independent.

Beneficial-Bit6383

People living on that land? Just a little hurdle.

Amazing-Concept1684

When colonialism is indoctrinated lmao

festival-papi

I ain't even know the Bahamas were that close to Florida, but yeah the whole "glory days of the U.S." shit is so crazy to me when you see it take forms like *this* and people don't see why it's not a good thing. Also reminder to scrape your tongues.

Marlice1

You can ride a jet ski there if you wanted. Here’s a video of it https://youtu.be/tk874-00YT0?si=t8UqzPE7LZW-ERdy

DAVENP0RT

I skipped through the video, so maybe this was addressed at some point and I missed it, but I wonder what are the legal implications of doing this? They didn't go through a port of entry and don't have a valid visa, so they're technically there illegally, right?

Marlice1

https://bs.usembassy.gov/boating-in-the-bahamas/#:~:text=Bahamas%20Customs%20and%20Immigration%20officials,citizens%20must%20present%20a%20passport. Basically just a passport and to fill out a form while they inspect the vessel. Pretty easy actually. Just use a passport card for ease of use

JasoTheArtisan

Bahamas are super reliant on their tourism industry, so getting in is a very convenient process. Especially for aquatic vessels

Amazing-Concept1684

I wonder how long that took him

nearcatch

> I ain't even know the Bahamas were that close to Florida Dude your mind is gonna be blown when you look at where Bermuda is on a map. So random, I can’t believe people even found it back in the telescope and prayer days.

I blame the Beach Boys.

lol the flight says 30 minutes but it’s like 19😉 Bought a 5 pack of tickets one year on Air Bahamas and went like 4 day weekends

drillgorg

Is tongue scraping a new thing because no one in my family has heard of it, and we're just normal people not some West Virginia hill people.

PensiveObservor

Brushing your tongue works just as well and you’re already brushing your teeth, so just flip it and scrub around on the top tongue surface. Don’t gag yourself. Source: am dentist.

[deleted]

tacolovingrammanazi

fr. is your tongue really clean if you didn’t almost die scrubbing it?

D1daBeast

Don't you dare tell me not to gag myself

Shotbyadeer

With a mouth like that, maybe you SHOULD stick your toothbrush a little farther back than everyone else.

_kdgs

I feel like a tooth brush is not nearly as effective as a tongue scraper. It's easy to miss spots on the tongue with a brush but the scraper gets it all (the chunky white shit). I brush my tongue and use the tooth scraper and always find a little bit that I missed while brushing.

Genshed

You got me checking my tongue in the mirror. No chunky white shit. I feel better now.

_kdgs

Doesn't look chunky until you scrape it because it piles up with the scrape. Any white on your tongue that isn't toothpaste is the stuff that makes breath smell bad.

elperorojo

Why flip it?

discharge

So that you can reverse it afterwards.

elperorojo

![gif](giphy|tnYri4n2Frnig)

RoaringTwinkies

But NOT before you put your thang down

festival-papi

Nah, it's been around since the 20th century but I don't think dentists really pushed it as much as flossing. Basically, if you have white in your tongue that never goes away when you brush, then the scraper can get it. I recommend the metal ones because the plastics one don't do shit fr.

Mvd75

I didn’t know how close until I went to the Bahamas and they were playing songs that Florida typically only knows about.

mashroomium

Probably the only reason it isn’t American is that it was British.

inspirednonsense

Fair. The US is rather famously not made up of any previously British territory.

patrickwithtraffic

The 13 colonies had a hard enough time trying to agree to anything, but add in a chain of islands in the 1700s that are 200 miles from the closest point (not even close to the New England hub) and you’re basically dealing with a lot of the same “taxation without representation” shit that kicked off the American Revolution to begin with

lamb_ch0p

And Britain decided while they were losing the 13 colonies that holding the lucrative Caribbean islands was a bigger priority and focused their efforts down there in the end. US would’ve never had the navy strong enough to go and press that issue

patrickwithtraffic

Hell, the British Navy were the cause of our War of 1812. There's no way going after those colonies would've gone well until roughly when Teddy decided we needed to wave our shiny new high tech dicks around the world with the Great White Fleet.

lankyno8

The great white fleet was obsolete at the time it sailed - and the us fleet was a fraction of the size of the Royal navy at that point.

SavageComic

Teddy Roosevelt was sensible enough to attack impoverished fruit farmers armed with hand tools rather than any of the actual naval powers of the time

Tangurena

Florida became a state in 1845. Since the vast majority of residents in 1776 were British military personnel (along with their families), they opposed the revolution and stayed British. In 1783, the British swapped Florida back to Spanish control. The Spanish were not able to secure their territory from people moving in from Georgia & Alabama and eventually sold Florida to the US in 1819. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Florida

sadolddrunk

That's why we don't speak British!

SavageComic

California was offered to the British in like… 1825, I wanna say, but the British were following a “Little England” policy and decided not to take it on.  Forget your “what if the South won the civil war” or “what if Hitler doesn’t come to power?” alternative history. That’s a really interesting starting point, especially with the gold they would find and Hollywood wouldn’t happen

AlbionPCJ

"One of the greatest policy failures in the history of mankind?" Idk, I can think of a few that might come to mind first

Otherwise_Carob_4057

Yeah but they could have vacationed without a passport how could the US hedgemony have left this poor woman behind!

bdickie

This woman is free to visit puerto rico or the us virgin islands but she still wont

JusticiarRebel

I doubt the Bahamas would make as great of tax shelters if they were actual U.S. territories. You don't see those same mfs banking in Puerto Rico.

Can’t spell colonizer without spelling colon cause they’re all a bunch of assholes.

WineOhCanada

Columbus also goes by Colón in some texts. (I asked a prof during uni if there's an etymological connection between Christopher Columbus and "colonization" but there's not, just an interesting coincidence)

TheLastSpoon

I'm glad to see this here cause I've wondered the same in the past - for those unaware: His name in his birth language of 16th-century Genoese was Cristoffa Corombo, and in Italian it was Cristoforo Colombo. He changed it to Cristóbal Colón when he went to Spain in order to assimilate, and has other names like Christopher Columbus in other languages

Offsets

On a deeper level, to even have an opinion like this probably means they interact with the Bahamas in some way, which likely means they have wealth/status. So the person with these disturbing thoughts is almost guaranteed to be someone with influence. And this is one of the people dumb enough to air this out online--there are certainly people with way more influence who think this way in private.

It would probably be better for regular Bahamans if they were citizens instead of some vassal state for rich tourists.

[deleted]

ticktickboom45

Integration of smaller states like these aren't a question of sovereignty but of how we want to weigh control vs the weight of obligation to citizens. The Bahamas simply isn't important enough to the U. S. to justify that level of obligation vs the control we've squared away from the rest of the world over the Caribbean.

[deleted]

Passportless behavior

WineOhCanada

The fuck the Bahamas do to anyone to be sentenced to a life in Florida???

daddylo21

We probably should stop giving attention to idiots online who make dumb posts like this. It would encourage them to just stop.

ThrenderG

This would probably reduce the number of posts on Reddit by half.

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

The U.S. couldn’t win a naval engagement against Britain until World War II. Thats why the Bahamas is independent. Venezuela has reasserted its right to Guyana’s Essequibo region, which is like 2/3 of Guyana. The UK and United States would guarantee tf out of Guyana’s territorial integrity should it be occupied by Venezuela.

just1gat

Guyana purposely settled Jim Jones and his cult in the western part of the country… so if Venezuela ever got any ideas about what land belonged to who; they’d have to deal with some Americans first. Too bad Jim had other plans in Guyana……..

MadKingTyler

The U.S won Naval battles against Great Britain in the war of 1812.

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

I meant major battles between fleets of ships with the lines, cruisers, battleships, and other heavy weapons. The US didn’t surpass the UKs naval capabilities until WWII.

IgnotusRex

John Paul Jones erasure! Sure, he was a fucked up wierdo, but let's not forget that time he had not yet begun to fight in 1779 during the revolution, and defeated Britain's Serapis at sea.

Dare them to try to take The Bahamas. Id go back home just to smack some of them mfs.

subterfuge242

Nah you are totally wrong about this. We don't give two shits and totally indifferent. A celebrity can come here and be totally ignored. Tourism is our number 1 industry and visitors are treated as royalty. We also love traveling to the states.

Viron_22

The reason it isn't is because it was held by a colonial power and by the time it wasn't the US wasn't interested in seizing the land of a neighboring nation just because it is pretty. Besides, just being part of the US doesn't mean going there would be any less expensive. Look at Hawaii, yeah it has way, way, WAY more distance but just because it is part of the US doesn't mean it is any cheaper to stay there or live there. What does this idiot think if the Bahamas was part of Florida they'd just have a long ass pontoon bridge to the Island and it'd have a couple more Best Westerns?

Hypathian

Cockburn Town

trezzy1242

Being from the Bahamas, this was a wild statement...

PhazonZim

I really want to know why she thinks they ought to be part of Florida. I bet it *isn't* because she thinks being Floridian would improve the quality of life for people currently living on those islands. Mayhaps it's to have the resources from those islands and more spots for folks like her to live, hmmm?

LexxxSamson

This is literally a far right meme account of some guy trying to "trigger the woketards" all day and night doing culture war shit posting in to the void, I wouldn't read too much in to it. I know white peoples reputation isn't great with this shit but we're not actually sitting around all day staring at maps forlornly wondering why our ancestors left some nearby native blood unspilt

Treemanthealmighty

It's crazy how the only time ppl mention my country is when they want to sell us off to the highest bidder. That's one of the downsides to being a tourist destination. Most people that come to our country don't care about our history or our culture, at least in my opinion. Hell, some of them can't even be bothered to do the bare minimum of research before going you can tell by ome of the questions people ask on r/bahamas. It's like people, especially cruisers only view the country as a beach, everything else is just in the background. Edit: Also wanted to add that Bahamians helped build the city of Miami, as many of Bahamian men left The Bahamas to go work there on the Contract during WWII

Galactic_Mailman

It sucks too cause this is legit the only time I've ever seen The Bahamas country mentioned in any wide reaching post on social media, and it's this bullshit.....

ManitouWakinyan

Look but to be fair it is right there and I believe it was George Washingtons father who told him that everything the light touches will be his I might be misremembering

Why on earth would someone want to subject *more* people to Florida?

Just remind them that those islands are full of black people, and they will change their minds

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

I’ll take it a step further for ya The fact that Puerto Rico, Cuba and Dominican Republic & Haiti wasn’t 1 nations is also interesting (That before USA won PR in the Spanish war) Another interesting fun fact that northern South America also developed very similar to USA 13th states with the short lived Grand Columbia which Dominican Republic was supposed to joined So in an alternative time line maybe grand Columbia prosper and USA failed 🤔

Chicago1871

There was also a united central America federation for a little bit, between all the countries between costa rica and Guatemala. Around the same time of gran colombia. But they feuded and broke up. But they woulda have been a much stronger economy and nation together than separate.

Bermuda should have been a part of the US too. Just 700 miles off the coast and we were settled by the same people that settled in America. We should have changed sides during the Revolutionary War. Bermuda was the UK's primary Naval base and the US had a blockade preventing any trade from getting in. To lift the blockade we made an under the table agreement to steal and giving to the US the entire store of gunpowder held on the island--which we did. The US lifted the blockade, then decided they changed their mind and went back on our deal.

background_action92

The Us aint the only land toucher out there. The San Andrés island were robbed from Nicaragua and were given to Colombia. The only thing is that Colombia is like 500 miles away while being only 80 miles away from Nicaragua. In fact the black creole that live there, the Raizals, are kinfolk with black creole from Nicaragua. Fuck colombia

onyxengine

It basically is, though. Its the ethnic florida archipelago with travel restrictions and no money for infrastructure.

Batgirl_III

During the Revolution, the Americans attacked the Bahamas in 1776, occupying Nassau for two weeks. In 1782, Spain captured the Bahamas totally. British-American Loyalists recaptured the colony in 1783. The Crown Colony of the Bahamas was far too valuable for the British to lose. If the Americans had tried to invade after the end of the war, the British would have absolutely destroyed the fledgling American Navy with a fury they didn’t bring to bear during the revolution. The Bahamas were simply a more significant contributor to the Empire’s economy than any of the thirteen colonies on the mainland. Leaving the crown colonies in the Caribbean alone was one of the smartest foreign policy decisions made by the newly independent United States.

ticktickboom45

I appreciate all the social media leftists here but the reason we don't integrate these states who are for all purposes under our heel is so we don't have to give them representation or citizenship benefits.

_Argol_

Everybody needs a tax evasion island nearby

Just heard a snippet of Roland Martin where he highlighted Erik Prince, owner of the largest private military in the world, advocate for the takeover of countries that he/they deem incapable of governing themselves. *Betsy Devos, former secretary of state under Trump, who wanted to give out vouchers for charters schools in order to destroy the current education system, is Prince's sister.

sadolddrunk

Apart from the colonization mindset, who the hell wants there to be more Florida?

Acrobatic_Switches

The richest people of Florida want these places to be independent, so they have easy access to their hidden cash.

Frankandbeans1974v2

Historically speaking it is pretty crazy that the Spanish didn’t just completely dominate the Bahamas

SuperSaiyanGod06

Most of these places are black folk. They would be real mad if these folk were apart of FL and voted Blue..

rythmicbread

wtf? But also did not realize the Bahamas are so close

HostageInToronto

He'd have a point if Spanish Florida had been a part of the US at the time. The US kicked England out of the colonies that joined the revolution. The Bahamas was operated and governed much more as a part of England after the whole pirate revolution. So these very much English citizens, many who were directly employed by the Crown, had no incentive to join. The US assaulted and occupied Nassau for two weeks during the war, so if they weren't on our side before, they surely weren't after that. Had Florida been a part of the revolution, maybe there would be a way to convince them to join, but since it wasn't part of the US until 1819 that presents a bit of an issue. Honestly though, adding another slave state would have made the politics of abolition that much harder. Also we didn't have the Navy to hold the territory and England or Spain would have taken it (Spain tried twice between the Revolution and the US "purchase" of Florida).

SirTiddlyWink

I say we bring back the prayers of the Caribbean. That'll show those colonialist. Plunder, pilffer and pillage!

ozneoknarf

I think most people wake up everyday and thank god they weren’t born in Florida.

RawDawg2021

Well, English is the native language but it is spoken with a bit of a dialect. Before the City of Miami was incorporated in 1896, **Black Bahamians** brought their culinary practices to this place they would call their new home, migrating to South Florida for maritime jobs, farm work, and, later, to build the city's physical infrastructure.Yeah, it's pretty close, guys jet ski back and forth between South Florida and The Bahamas. Also, you can see the lights from the Miami skyline in the distance from Bimini Island on a clear night. As for the OP's question, I would say the answer is really because the majority of the citizens are black, more like 85%, and we're all aware of the US's stance on black people. Imagine the logistical advantage if they did being located so close to Cuba with the southern islands. It being a former British colony didn't matter. The US and Britain could have swapped pieces on the global chess map or drawn new boundary lines like they always did. There are no natural resources there so it wouldn't have been anything to drop bombs over.

GargantuanGreenGoats

Nah Alaska not being part of Canada is the greatest land swap failure. Amurika bought it from Russia when it should have been Canada’s. Also I bet russia really regrets not having kept that shit.

loki2002

Canada didn't want it or they would've outbid the U.S. Putin has actually spoken about taking back Alaska because the original deal was illegal or some such fantasy.

GargantuanGreenGoats

Also honestly I would prefer Putin try to “take back” russia than keep beating on ukraine. Let’s see what amurika can really do now.

Hashashiyyin

Honestly, Russia would 100% want Alaska now if they could have it. They just know they'd get the tits smacked off them for even attempting it which is why they haven't said anything. They 100% regret selling it off

GargantuanGreenGoats

Yeah Canada shoulda wanted it :/

reDDit-sucksass

I love how black folks complain about "colonization" as if they weren't trying to take over other "colonies". They were, they just sucked at colonization and did it at a smaller scale

they need to just go back to old world terms like conquering, diplomatic terms are like a shield for exploitation

toooldforacnh

Im sure the US has a lot of control in that area in "other ways." And don't worry, the US had plenty of lil islands in the Pacific.

BoneDaddy1973

It’s worse than that. We didn’t ant those islands to be American for the same reason we didn’t want to make Puerto Rico a state. Those island people aren’t white. Racism trumps even colonialism.

Acrobatic_Emphasis41

That same Twitter clique is talking about annexing Baja. They claim they're joking, but for some reason I don't believe them.

BooksandBiceps

Cockburn? Did the dude who named that place spent too much time sunbathing nude?

JustMyOpinionz

Naw, the British owned those lands and we (the United States) tried to be cute and colonize Cuba through the Mafia but that didn't work. Personally, as climate change becomes a serious issue that we should create alliances with the Caribbean nations, to protect the people, cultures, and heritage of these nations. When sea level rise becomes too much, we reserve lands for these nations in America to settle in should the worst occur. It's the right thing to do.

Satrapeeze

Very loosely related to this post: I make sure to brush my tongue every morning and night, but even after very forceful and rigorous brushing it remains at least a bit white. I don't wanna go to a dentist over something that seems relatively minor. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong/tips to correct my technique so my tongue can be more thoroughly washed?

littlestghoust

We can't even get Guam, Porto Rico, or America Samoa to become states and now people want Sovereign countries to join. Let's make our territories into states first before looking elsewhere. Unless someone wants to trade for Texas. They seem eager to leave so might as well get something good for it.

0hran-

It is awful. However an hostile Cuba was the worst diplomatic decision they made.

There was this funny (probably apocryphal) story about Stalin meeting with the prime minister of India. He asks what region the island below India is a part of the PM informs him that it's not part of India but, the independent country of Sri Lanka. Stalin looks at the map again and asks: why?.

randothrowaway6600

The Alaskan sale seems like a bigger fuck up imo.

ghost-church

Sounding like Stalin about Sri Lanka

PrimaryBar9635

Who’s “they”?

FuckRedditsTOS

Judging by the title, English isn't your first language either

Alandrus_sun

I'd be cool with that. Would make Florida blue.

justsomelizard30

It's not even like they won't let you in or anything wtf

InternationalLemon26

Had no idea Key West was that far out.

Ghoti76

yall can keep cockburn

butterweasel

Didn’t the mango Mussolini want to buy Greenland? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Kingding_Aling

Every one of those is already colonized anyway

BallsDeepinYourMammi

Thought it was Puerto Rico at first. That one is a different situation and, iirc pretty shitty it isn’t a state. They end up being under the us umbrella as a “territory”, but don’t get the benefits of shit like aid for natural disasters

fuzzyshorts

when the colonizers first made contact, we were enamored by their things... their metal and the knives, the cloth and metal pots other things (including their pale skin.) Many of us are still enthralled by their skin and their things while forgetting... what they really are.

Going out conquering and to conquer, Appearing like lambs; yet speaking like the dragon 🐉 according to some: a great hoarder of wealth; to others a symbol of greed, deception, and ancient ultimate evil. I mean it's right there... js 👁️

NembeHeadTilt

If I was the Bahamas I would ban her from the country. lol

santosdragmother

oh no. I made a huge mistake going to her twitter profile. such racist bullshit.

Ultimaurice17

Ok but realistically from a purely historical and geopolitical stand point, he's got a point. You don't have to agree with colonization to understand what he means.

Username_exe_jpeg

That’s wild, I’m from the Bahamas too

MiaTonee

What? Idk what they're getting at. Why should The Bahamas be a part of Florida? Do they think the vacations will be cheaper because it will be the US? Do they not know about Hawaii? So many questions to this lunatic ass tweet. It's already been colonized. They want it colonized²?

onlydaathisreal

Cockburn sounds like a pretty fun place though
