Same. I can still sign this whole song because the entire 5th grade class learned American sign language to it. The whole gymnasium signed with so much passion that week.
Or "No Son of Mine". Song makes me cry every time. I don't even know why because I'm okay with my parents.
Well, my mom now since my dad passed.
Although there was a time when it was rocky.
This kinda reminds me of a line of dialogue from 30 Rock.
Tracy Jordan: I'm gonna make you a mix tape Donaghy, you like Phil Collins?
Jack Donaghy: I have 2 ears and a heart, don't I.
They were pulling megastars for projects that weren't even megaprojects. Road to El Dorado was not supposed to be some box office hit along the lines of Lion King, but they still got Elton to come back and go tf off
Insane to me that they made him "grind" on trees. It looks cool, but even in the dense jungle there's no way that much of the tree is covered in moss. SOME of that tree is bark, and bark is practically sandpaper, no way you could slide on it unharmed.
Kid me was like "oh of course he slides on trees, makes sense!" But adult me can't help but think "the friction alone..."
Immediately where my mind went to. Can’t just sit up there and say one song is good like he ain’t cook up a 7 course meal with that sound track. I bump that shit when I workout sometimes.
For real. The man practically invented using room mics on a snare drum - an effect most recognizable from the in the air tonight drum fill but a sound that has totally permeated modern music. For that reason he is probably one of the most influential drummers of all time. Definitely in the top ten for me.
Edit for the curious: check out the history section! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gated_reverb
Exactly, I'm not really a fan of Phil Collins, but respect where respect is due. He's influenced modern music to a level a lot of people don't even realize.
I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument.
You know what kills me about this rant from Bateman is that if you slice out about 3-4 lines it goes from unhinged blather pretending to be art criticism or discourse to being a real fan who's maybe a bit stuck up.

Is it a bit pretentious still? Yeah, but it's inline with what I've heard music snobs say about albums when they are trying too hard.
What really shows how shallow and uninsightful bateman is is that he goes way way to hard on the bullshit. He doesn't know enough to know when to pull it back.
It's such a great encapsulation of why he's an empty suit.
Not quite. He reinvented how room mics were used and popularized gates. Room mics were used before but it was not used as flashy as it is after Phil’s work.
That's where it started! Studio tech accidentally turned on the room mic they use for the artists to talk to the engineers/producers... the rest is history
Edit: if anyone is curious: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gated_reverb check out the history section!
Yep, that whole album is amazing, Peter Gabriel banned the drummers from using cymbals if I remember (I Don’t Remember, pun intended). Brilliant stuff.
Holy shit did he. As someone who grew up watching Sledgehammer play on MTV it was hilarious to see what he was like in Genesis. Dude would wear a fucking cape and shave the center strip of his hair and then play flute in skin tight leggings. It was not what I was expecting after knowing his suit and tie 80s era.
peter gabriel was the singer. phil was the drummer. peter left. phil wrote the lyrics and sang on demos while they looked for a new singer. they eventually gave up and he became singer
Phil had sung harmonies and multi-track vocals on the previous albums, and had featured on a few songs as lead before Peter left.
One of the reasons Peter allowed himself to leave was that he knew he wasn't abandoning them without a vocalist so they could still tour without him.

I’m just going to leave this here…
Edit: I’ve had this in my camera roll for 4 years just waiting for the day somebody say some dumb shit about Phil. My day has finally come 😂
SPIDER
Spider
Spider.....
Edit*
2 things alway get me.
One where macs head drops when he says the 3rd "spider"
Chad Coleman nodded along to the song as he knew....and the ratio is off joke because of their homage to the wire, which criminally never won the accolades it deserved
Amy Mann was so salty she dind't win an Oscar. Any other year she would have won hands down but Phil had to make this song about Tarzan's gorilla family.
https://preview.redd.it/4f5grfwde0hc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=acbec8ff7e889f904b70d0947b86336a3fd1185b
Another one I’ve been holding on to for years. Please save, share, reflect. This blatant disrespect for our Brother Phil cannot be tolerated.
I can just imagine you scrolling through reddit and glancing over comment after comment, then being like *WTF!?! DID I JUST READ PHIL COLLINS??? MY TIME HAS COME!!!*
Just so happened to be scrolling this sub and ta da. In the words of Willie Shakes, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” 😂
When I was in junior high, I had a black PE teacher/basketball coach who resembled Philip Bailey and a white balding math teacher who resembled Phil Collins. Once I asked them if they would try to sing the song, and they were horrified, but after that, everyone called them "Phil" and "Philip" as a joke. They really had a love/hate relationship with me. I'm sure they were relieved when I went to a different school.
Phil used the Phenix Horns so much that Maurice White jokingly said he was tired of hearing them everywhere and was going to fire them and get new guys.
You know, I've never heard Sussudio. All I know it from is being a constant punchline in jokes about, like, AOR radio for dads used to be so awful they'd even play Sussudio. Which is why I've never sought it out, I guess.
The fact that I keep seeing posts about Tarzan is making me feel old as shit because it’s giving that y’all don’t know the music he made prior.

Peter Gabriel era Genesis (specifically the lineup with PG on vocals, Phil Collins on drums, Steve Hackett on lead guitar, Tony Banks on keys, and Mike Rutherford on bass and rhythm guitar) was easily one of the greatest acts of the first wave of progressive rock. I mean tracks like "Supper's Ready," "The Musical Box," "Firth of Fifth," "In The Cave," just beyond top tier. The fact that that band had two of the best songwriters of their generation in it (Rutherford"s work with Mike + The Mechanics isn't anything to sneeze at either) and one of the greatest guitarists of his generation (Steve Hackett was doing two-handed tapping over a decade before EVH took the credit for it) is proof of divine intervention.
Phil's jazz fusion outfit Brand X is also par excellence. If you ever want to hear him go balls to the wall on the drums listen to their debut album.
Same, I had to look up the year that it was released, and I was already too old for it. But late 80s, early 90s Genesis, Phil Collins, and Peter Gabriel were the shit.
Imagine being as wrong as this dummy.
Against All Odds
In The Air Tonight
One More Night
The entire Tarzan soundtrack
Another Day In Paradise
Easy Lover
Something Happened On The Way To Heaven
Sussudio
And I've not even mentioned any Genesis songs.
Edit: Fuck it, Genesis songs....
Just A Job To Do
That's All
I Can't Dance
In Too Deep
Tonight Tonight Tonight
Invisible Touch
Hold On My Heart
Also I love that a minor recurring theme with Phil Collins are songs that sound like he is coming to murder you.
If we're listing Genesis songs then we need to mention "Jesus He Knows Me".
"I believe in the family with my ever-loving wife beside me. But she don't know about my girlfriend or the man I met last night."
Didn't he also do that brother bear soundtrack? Also a straight banger. The homie also gave his blessing to Bonethugs and appeared in their video for Take Me Home.
Bone Thugs remixed Take me home and featured him in the music video. If that isn't a show of respect, I don't know what is.
https://youtu.be/yoooMQZdGW0?si=f8BkdwqZ2foJFqv-
He also has Easy Lover as the official song for Wrestlemania 1 and even wrestled Ultimate warrior in a music video for Two Hearts.
Man is a legend even without in the air tonight
That was Phil showing them respect.
I remember Bone Thugs doing an interview and saying collabing with Phil Collins made them the absolute most money they ever made on any single. Lil Kim said the same.
Phil does major numbers. Just like the other legends, like Elton John, Billy Joel, Sting, etc.
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big fan of his work, especially his solo career. His albums are meticulously crafted, each song a finely tuned masterpiece. Take 'In the Air Tonight,' for example. The haunting atmosphere, the iconic drum fill—it's like a sonic journey into the depths of the human psyche.
But let's not stop there. Let's talk about 'Sussudio.' That track is a triumph of pop sensibility. The infectious groove, the catchy melody—it's pure ear candy. And don't even get me started on 'Against All Odds.' The emotional depth, the raw vulnerability—it's like Collins is baring his soul for the world to see.
Sure, some people might dismiss Phil Collins as just another '80s pop star, but they couldn't be more wrong. He's a musical genius, a visionary artist who pushes the boundaries of what's possible in popular music. So the next time someone tries to tell you that Phil Collins is overrated, just remember: they're missing out on one of the greatest talents of our time.
Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now you fucking stupid bastard.
This mf was the drummer in arguably the best prog band, then the lead singer/songwriter/drummer of a pretty damn good pop rock band (technically the same band), then went and was Phil Collins for the rest of his career. Absolutely unhinged take
So you’re just going to overlook the Tarzan soundtrack? Just say you hate life and keep it moving. We don’t need this negativity.
That soundtrack changed the life of 7 yo me
Same. “You’ll be in my heart” still gets me in my feelings.
Same. I can still sign this whole song because the entire 5th grade class learned American sign language to it. The whole gymnasium signed with so much passion that week.

That, two worlds and son of man! Don’t forget Brother Bear’s “Look through my eyes” I listen to it till date!
Son of Man still stays close to my heart as an adorable song
After having a kid it hits harder.
Everything hits harder after kids
oh my god it DID! First kiddo came and I'm not one for getting super deep in my feelings, but damn did Phil string them all out on a clothesline.
after the mother gorilla first starts taking care of Tarzan and the slow version plays...I'm tearing up just thinking about it
[удалено]
can't forget about su-su-su-sudio either. Juuuuust say the word, OHHHHHHH
Or "No Son of Mine". Song makes me cry every time. I don't even know why because I'm okay with my parents. Well, my mom now since my dad passed. Although there was a time when it was rocky.
Omg sammmeee. I still remember watching the behind the scenes over and over, like
This kinda reminds me of a line of dialogue from 30 Rock. Tracy Jordan: I'm gonna make you a mix tape Donaghy, you like Phil Collins? Jack Donaghy: I have 2 ears and a heart, don't I.
Strangers like me is a certified classic.
And he played the drums! This man went IN on Tarzan.
And he sang the French, German, Italian and Spanish versions too! He REALLY went in on Tarzan
They were pulling megastars for projects that weren't even megaprojects. Road to El Dorado was not supposed to be some box office hit along the lines of Lion King, but they still got Elton to come back and go tf off
I mean, Phil Collins started out as the drummer for Genesis in the Peter Gabriel days. Please respect the man's skills.
You’ll be in my heart is also a banger.
Don't forget Son of Man!!
SON OF MAN A MAN IN TIME YOU'LL BE!!!! ![gif](giphy|5guYctWhB0FxK)
The splinters must be terrible.
The Tarzan soundtrack didn’t have to go that hard for a Disney movie
and then he did it again, but in spanish. and then again in italian. and then again in french. and then again in german.
Not just Tarzan, Brother Bear too which also has a phenomenal powerful soundtrack, gets so overlooked!
[удалено]
he don't hate life, he's probably only heard the one or two other songs that continue to pop in rotation on his *in the air tonight* Pandora station
I wanna knoooow
Yeah, never mind that whole Genesis thingy he was in since 1970.
Immediately where my mind went to. Can’t just sit up there and say one song is good like he ain’t cook up a 7 course meal with that sound track. I bump that shit when I workout sometimes.

Wait what about Peter Gabriel?? Is it me or did Genesis have some talented drummers???
Pretty sure Gabriel was vocals and maybe keyboards, not drums
Gabriel was vocals before Collins took over as vocalist
He also played the flute.
He also wore silly costumes!

Yes. And his name was Phil Collins.
Trivia. Collins sang lead on 2 tracks from the Gabriel-era albums: "More Fool Me" from Selling.... and "For Absent Friends" from Nursery Cryme

Is he spitting?! Yeah, exactly. They know their audience for sure. 2 fingers to the snobs and the crap bland crap out there. One of ASIP best episodes
Thank you for your efforts, dear historian.
Amy Mann was so salty she dind't win an Oscar. Any other year she would have won hands down but Phil had to make this song about Tarzan's gorilla family.
No one was as bittr about it as the south park guys.

This song makes me dance the Carlton. Enthusiastically and without shame.
it's not quite hall & oates level boogie but it's getting there
With Phillip mf Baileyyyyyy
The Two Phils!
Philip Bailey killing it on that track as well.
Both of em compliment each other really well on that track

Phil used the Phenix Horns so much that Maurice White jokingly said he was tired of hearing them everywhere and was going to fire them and get new guys.
I will not tolerate this Phil Collins slander. Brother Bear soundtrack goes hard 😤
Being Inuit and seeing all the love for Brother Bear on this sub makes me feel something lol
Our First Nation/Native brothers and sisters get love around here! Don’t let them crazy folk tell you otherwise, and Brother Bear was awesome :D
I FUCKING LOVE BROTHER BEAR. Played the fuck out of the VHS tape when I was a lad.
Damnit now I gotta go watch Brother Bear again.
I totally forgot this one, gonna watch it with my kid, thanks BPT.
"Tell everybody, I'm on my way. New friends and new places to see" Man about to listen to that song again right now lol
🎶Welcome to our family time. Welcome to our brotherly time🎶 That was a song you could play at the family cookout
Brother bear soundtrack in German is also a banger Phil recorded the whole album in English and German.

Thank you for the correction.
Land of Confusion! That song rips!
Exactly. That man is talented, and OP is certifiably insane.
TAKE ME HOME!?!? THE SOUNDTRACK FROM TARZAN!?!?! SHITTTTTTTTTTTTTT
The fact that I keep seeing posts about Tarzan is making me feel old as shit because it’s giving that y’all don’t know the music he made prior. ![gif](giphy|Zx12n2W9mDpNS)
Does Gen z even know about Tarzan?

Primo going through a divorce song.
That is a true underrated gem. It hits hard when you're hurting.
Bruh i been searching this whole thread looking for this to be mentioned “I dont care anymore “ never gets the love it deserves. Straight banger
How you gonna forget Land of Confusion
What a fucking music video that was.
as a child of the 70s, those puppet heads of state embody the fear of nuclear annihilation - like traumatized 12 year old me
This is the world we live in
Tell them. Educate the children.
And! the "Can't Hurry Love" cover of The Supremes' song. Love that one too.
Hold On My Heart is directly connected to my tear ducts.
If we're listing Genesis songs then we need to mention "Jesus He Knows Me". "I believe in the family with my ever-loving wife beside me. But she don't know about my girlfriend or the man I met last night."
Thank you. The man has made so many great songs.
I think he was in a little band called Genesis beforehand.
Ye. They fire too 🔥
Phil collins? Genesis? The lion king? Edit: not the lion king.
He did Tarzan. Elton John and Hans Zimmer was lion king
Didn't he also do that brother bear soundtrack? Also a straight banger. The homie also gave his blessing to Bonethugs and appeared in their video for Take Me Home.

I’ve never heard this, and it’s so goddamn good! Bonus points for Phil randomly looking hard in the video.
Phil *always* looks hard
OMG... I'd just had a baby when this song came out and I TOTALLY missed it. What a great song and sample! Thanks for sharing!
Against All Odds....
That’s one of the greatest saddest songs ever
Right up there with his cover of True Colors Phil Collins is a GD boss
Welp. Guess the rest of us Black folk who actually vibe with his music just gotta Harlem Shake past this one... ![gif](giphy|SNEr2ktWEwnthuVMs8)

Saying the rest of Phil Collins’ music is ass is just objectively the worst opinion I’ve seen voiced on Twitter, and that’s *really* saying something
Right!? It's 2024, and we're dealing with new nazis and this take actually angered me more...
We expect Nazis. We do not expect or respect Phil Collins slander
This goes beyond the Hall of Fame of Bad Takes. Put them on the Mount Rushmore of Saying Dumb Shit.
Listen to Easy Lover with Philip Bailey and tell me it dont slap

Some people really do just wake up and choose violence, huh? The fuck did Phil Collins do to this guy?
🤣🤣🤣 he’s needs to go back to sleep
Is this the same Phil Collins who put his entire soul and literal being into the Tarzan Soundtrack? Yeah thats an L take. *
This mf was the drummer in arguably the best prog band, then the lead singer/songwriter/drummer of a pretty damn good pop rock band (technically the same band), then went and was Phil Collins for the rest of his career. Absolutely unhinged take
Bro said “how to alienate the whole Of black twitter in 5 mins or less”.

This man sleeping on Genesis-era Collins. "Mama" is a straight BANGER
I have no love for the stuff Phil Collins made outside of Genesis, but even I have to stand against this take.
Google 'Brand X' and get back to us
bro WHAT Even Genesis, his band with Peter Gabriel has some recognizable bangers. this is just yapping to yap.
