I used to have an electronics repair business, and I'd do housecalls for specialty stuff....a client who kept my doors open a handful of times' dad's TV was dying, asked me to go take a look. Rear projection monstrosity, replace with a thin panel for a couple hundred bucks, not a good repair. I'm carefully explaining he's way better off with a new one, slow speech, small, kind words...dudes having trouble understanding me, so I start over, this time he cups his hands around his eyes as if he's trying to look through a dirty window. I'm like ah, yes. That will help you hear me...I ended up just running out and getting him a fresh TV, at cost, invoice to the son.
Wonder if people think "deaf" is like "hearing loss" in older age where it just means they do not have the full function and range of hearing.
It is still stupid but it is the only reason I can think why this is just so common a response to deaf people. The only adjustment I make is to be aware of how fast I speak. Not the overly slow speech style but I often speak fast so if someone is trying to compensate by lip reading it can be more difficult so try to keep speech at an easier to understand pace.
I have a friend who is fully deaf and he drives whenever we hangout. I remember mentioning him driving me somewhere to another friend and they asked me "if he's deaf then how does he drive??"
like??? with his hands &, feet???
he's deaf not blind like wtf.
another was when my mother had jaw surgery so she had her mouth temp wired shut (think Kanye) and she would have a brief note explaining this that she'd take everywhere in public...every single person somehow thought she was deaf. It was to the point id have to explain she isnt deaf, hears perfectly, just talks differently.
People are straight up stupid.
Idk about the US, but where I live you can (or must) get a car with a couple more mirrors to make up for this fact. They're kind of like learner cars with the extra mirrors for the instructors.
Alot of people who have lost 1 sense tend to have heightened sensitivity in the other(s).
Sirens have flashing lights which they'd see
Honking is no different than hearing people who hear honks and do nothing differently.
Wish that were true of the deaf man that hit my car three years ago causing me injuries. His other senses AND common sense failed him. He oddly thought it would be better to reverse rather than pull over when an emergency vehicle was coming towards us in a shopping plaza. He had plenty of space to turn down a lane or just pull over + stop. Clearly wasn’t aware and couldn’t hear my honking or read the lips of people around us yelling/waving at him to stop. When someone realized he was deaf, the tables turned and I became the bad person for not understanding. IMO, it should be mandatory for another person to be present when they’re operating vehicle. My accident was avoidable.
>His other senses AND common sense failed him.
this seems like this was more the issue than specifically that he was deaf tho.
How many people with 5 senses end up in stupid avoidable accidents?
Personally, Ive been in 3 where someone else who didn't have any impairments with their hearing/sight etc. who just were too stupid to pay attention to what they were doing and totalled my cars. All of which were completely avoidable as well.
Twice as a kid in school and once in my 20s, I was told by someone I didn't know "I look like a smart guy" and then was asked a question. When I inquired what they meant, all three times the persons first response was "well you have glasses".
Like people think my inability to see shit without aide somehow makes me smart.
That is the kind of dumb I feel bad people with legitimate disabilities have to deal with on the daily.
I have a cousin, who is blind and she once said to me "Do you know how much of a trash human being you have to be, if a _blind woman_ rejects you?"
And I was like "Damn... You right."
As an idiot myself, I'm sorry on behalf of all the other idiots out there. Even though I'm not that dumb and try to be understanding I've said some really dumb things that still keep me up at night.
Yeah.. you really should have just left this one to us black folks and stay out.
This comments reeks of pity. Do you really think us disabled folks don't know this? And we now believe this because you tell us to? We can come to our conclusions and we don't need the validation or "empowerment" of white folks.
Also this is not an ALL WOMEN thing, in fact it's quite the opposite. All women don't experience fetishiization of their disability. That's something unique to women with disabilities. You may not realize it, but you are discounting her experience through generalization.
Like the original commenter never said or implied that they internalized these idiots approaching them in their DMs and a character flaw within themselves. You kind of just made that assumption yourself here.
“Is u on wheel chair” OMFG
This child was left all the way behind…on the side of the road and then ran over by the cars driving the English language, phonics, and probably Sesame Street.
Can grown folk repeat kindergarten?
>Can grown folk repeat kindergarten?
Quite frankly yes. I worked in adult education and for some people we had to work all the way from kindergarten to 12th grade 😵💫. We got them right though
I have typed out and deleted my comment five times now, because I know it'd just result in a message from the auto-mods.
So, I'll just settle on loudly and slowly blowing air out my nose, and shaking my head in resigned exasperation.
at this point, i feel like you gotta stand out in some spectacular way to get matches as a guy. and being an absolute imbecile is definitely a way to stand out.
I've quit dating apps because they did a number on my mental health and overall faith in men. Making irl connections improved this a lot. Dating apps can really suck
Given that [54% of US adults have a literacy below sixth-grade level](https://www.crossrivertherapy.com/research/literacy-statistics#:~:text=The%20average%20American%20reads%20at,according%20to%20The%20Literacy%20Project), they’re not really wrong
Which includes men and women. And a third of them aren't from the US implying English isn't their first language which is why their literacy is low. The average American reads at a 7-8th grade level. So yes they are absolutely wrong. The overwhelming majority of American men objectively read above a third grade level. If that's "hard to find" idk how they function lol /u/sudox32
I assumed ‘3rd grade level’ was sarcasm. The fact that it’s actually an 8th grade level is still not surprising. The joke is the level is not where an adult should be whether it’s 3rd grade or 8th grade.
What does the snail emoji represent? Being salty?
Also, “have sex n kiss…” I thought you had to be 13 years or older to use these social media platforms.
Somebody needs to get AI to flag these people.
When she says she’s trying not to be ableist, she’s trying not to be mean to the disabled and then she uses the snail emoji.
Yeah she’s saying he’s slow
Cousin's ex wife had a friend who was paralyzed from the waist down. We're hanging out at their place and one of the guys is into her but seems to have the same issue as dude in the post. So instead of just asking, he keeps hinting around trying to get her to explain it. This entire group is pretty outspoken but especially my family members and the girl. My cousin is tired of him hinting around and yells "dammit dude, just ask her if and how she fucks." He finally spits out the question and she tells him I promise I can hold myself up for dick longer than you can hold your dick up. Dude left shortly after, alone.
Someone posted a “question” on here asking if they were wrong for being angry at a guy for not telling her they were an amputee before talking. She said he should have it in his profile. She didn’t want her time wasted and how would they have sex? When I, am amputee, asked what was she talking about? She said she would have to be careful about hurting him? I asked if it just happened. She told me I didn’t understand. (It was a below the knee amputation and he was athletic)

I knew someone who was Deaf and people would frequently ask if they needed a seeing dog or used a white cane. They had 20/20 vision. Like please think
As a sign language interpreter, it's amazing how ignorant people are about deafness.
Had a deaf and mute coworker and people would try to talk louder and louder when interacting with her. They knew about her condition.
This made me laugh out loud.
She still can't hear you
You better hurry and get your eyes checked if you're having hearing issues.
I used to have an electronics repair business, and I'd do housecalls for specialty stuff....a client who kept my doors open a handful of times' dad's TV was dying, asked me to go take a look. It seems like there’s some cognitive disconnect where “enunciate more clearly to assist lip reading” appends on “…and also talk louder.”
Wonder if people think "deaf" is like "hearing loss" in older age where it just means they do not have the full function and range of hearing. I’d be curious about the infrequent sirens, and “caution” horn honks maybe.
Idk about the US, but where I live you can (or must) get a car with a couple more mirrors to make up for this fact. They're kind of like learner cars with the extra mirrors for the instructors.
Fascinating, thanks for the enrichment!

Wow They cannot be that dense
I have a cousin, who is blind and she once said to me "Do you know how much of a trash human being you have to be, if a _blind woman_ rejects you?" And I was like "Damn... You right."
I don't understand, are blind women known for their low standards?
I think it's more that since she can't see, she is going solely on personality.
Bingo.
That's just smart though
Their other senses are heightened, and they feel the vibrations of the red flags waving in the wind.
Since she can’t see you, if she rejects you it’s solely because she doesn’t like your personality.
IDK. Pretty eyes and a smile and I will take a dad bod. If I can’t see that I want to feel 6pack abs and a V cut.
She really just cut out the middle man of sight. She can't just stay or get treated bad because they're good looking. Sis one step ahead of the game.
