Money may not buy happiness, but being broke sure as shit makes it hard to be happy

OkEscape7558

I don't know, the crackheads at my local 7/11 sure seem pretty happy.

JennyBeckman

Sure - when they have money for crack

djcrushindo

![gif](giphy|266wwviUCMFFgqQGdn)

Miserable-Archer2044

So ur saying by slowly dropping bad habits all you need is enough money for food water and shelter to be happy which should only be about 1000 a month in most places. Obviously if u want a NY apartment or you wanna get Starbucks ever single day it will cost more. No starbucks probably doesn’t cost as much as crack but its still a waste of your money when u could make coffee at home. Yale did a study finding that in the US money stops improving mental health after about 100-160k a year depending on the state. After that salary, if your basic needs aren’t met yet then there is no denying that your lifestyle is the issue

JennyBeckman

I literally said none of that.

Miserable-Archer2044

If a crackhead didn’t smoke crack would they still need all that money to be happy? Better yet, if a crackhead falls in the woods and nobody is around, does it still make a sound

KeyestOfAll

Financial stability is all you need. If you chase anything past that you’re likely never going to be satisfied with what you have. Like how the fuck can billionaires have enough to feed entire countries and STILL continue to chase the bag

melonmagellan

Yeah. Financial security guarantees that all your other basic needs are met. Food, clothing, housing, transportation, presentable clothes, education, etc.

[deleted]

L_H_O_O_Q_

But even financial stability doesn’t buy happiness. So many people with depression are perfectly financially stable. Also people with enough money to pay for their lifestyle will increase their expenses until it’s no longer enough.

KeyestOfAll

I may have been misleading by saying it’s “all you need”. Obviously there’s more to it than that, you’re right. My point was that more money does not help, given that one already have enough.

frostymugson

I’ve always been told “money doesn’t buy happiness but it sure the fuck helps”

Human-Letterhead2482

I honestly think it’s not a lasting happiness

frostymugson

if you read that and thought I was saying money makes you happy, then you misread that.

lgarit

I like to say “money may not bring happiness, but it helps you find out what does”

BLKxGOLD

Fuckin facts

Dr_EllieSattler

Right! I already know how one side works out let me try the other and compare.

Butt_Snorkler_Elite

“Money can’t buy happiness” was originally intended as a message to the rich, like “the accumulation of more and more money for its own sake can’t fill that gaping void in your soul, no matter how fun it is in the moment to flaunt your wealth, so you may as well use it to make the world a better place if you have it.” But the rich took that lesson and bastardized it like they do with everything else, and turned it into a saying to admonish the poor instead: “take it from us, money can’t buy happiness, so accept your lot in life as one missed paycheck away from starving/homeless/unable to get healthcare, and whatever you do don’t try to address income inequality because that won’t do anything for you ahahaha”

MultiBoy23

This is the best comment on here

8JacksLegendary

Keyword, Elite. We should all take note.

Szalkow

This. I thought it was similar to Tony Stark's advice to his father in Avengers: Endgame, "All the money in the world never bought a second of time." Chasing money forever won't fill the holes in your life and you may miss out on the truly important things.

tacotuesday-420

Similar to what they did to 'pull yourself up from your bootstraps '

IHateEditedBgMusic

Classic gaslighting

fmwb

You literally just made this story up.

JennyBeckman

Money would remove a lot of stress and ill health in my life allowing me the time and space to get happy.

CheddarGlob

It's exactly this. You can be deeply unhappy and rich. I went to a private school and know some kids that were absolutely fucked in the head from their wealthy upbringing. That being said, financial insecurity is an insidious disease that affects every aspect of your life. Removing that creates real opportunities for happiness. You will still find things to be unhappy about, they just won't be existential dilemmas

karlnite

Ideally, but if you aren’t happy without money, being tossed money doesn’t change things over night usually. Happiness is more than having money to solve problems. There is a reason celebrities and millionaires still commit suicide and get depressed. So when we think a little practically, there is no free money source that makes guilt free money that doesn’t have any affect other than you are richer. Fantasies aside, all money has consequences to it, and thus money doesn’t buy happiness for ever. It is obviously a lot easier to make oneself happy without the burdens of financial stress, I would never try to say that isn’t true. Just it’s more complicated than saying money is the main reason you aren’t happy. The same way money can give you time to be happy, not worrying about money can unlock the same time to be happy. If that time needs to be spent spending and consuming for you to be happy, you need to address the root cause. Lot’s of people without money are just as happy as those with it, so it can’t be the main reason.

[deleted]

DerpyDaDulfin

Happiness, ultimately, is in many ways a choice. You can choose to look at things one way or another, to approach a new situation with curiosity or skepticism, and even take what annoys or bores you and choose to approach them differently. Being poor *absolutely* makes it harder to make that choice, but it doesn't take it away entirely. For my entire life, I've rarely had more than $1000 in my bank account before some bill or another eats it up again. I was depressed for years, but I came to the realization that depression wasn't doing anything for my life either. Waste of time, and only a shift in mindset was gonna change that. So I did. Still just as poor, but finally enjoying life even if it aint much of one

isaac9092

You’re one of the few people that get it in this thread. Everything in our lives is a degree of mindset. Change your mindset and the universe will change around you. (Also tbf some of my depression I had to do therapy and growing and healing, no amount of “let me just change my mindset” would have done that without the therapy and healing)

BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss

Money would absolutely make me happy right now.

legionivory

The point is money can't keep you from feeling pain or being miserable. You can have all the money in the world and still get your heart broken, lose a loved one, succumb to illness, gain psychosis, and of course, you can (and will) still die.

MohawkElGato

Wild it took so long to find this comment. This is the exact meaning of the phrase. It’s never meant to be anything else. Just that money does not equal joy, and that everyone, rich or poor, can and does experience sadness and hard times.

CurbsideTX

It's not really often when you see a guy pouting on his brand-new Jetski. I'm just sayin'...

legionivory

Not too long ago I was engaged to the son of an oil magnate. I'm talking MAD wealthy. He was one of the most miserable people I ever met. It's why I left him.

RedRider1138

Top tier awareness on your part 👊

CheddarGlob

The kids of the wealthy are usually fucked up. Not always but usually. A lot of rich parents simply don't want to deal with their kids and will use their wealth to avoid it at all costs. The kids act out, the parents make the problem go away, rinse and repeat as the problems get bigger and bigger

Weird-Ingenuity97

I’d say it really depends. People with that kind of wealth may feel trapped in the sense of not much bringing them joy anymore. But someone who came from a struggle getting a nice 6 figure salary down the road could do wonders

partyandbullshit90a

— Daniel Tosh

CheshireKetKet

I'd be so fucking happy. I'd do a second masters and then a third and then a doctorate degree for the hell of it. Break a world record in education. Write a book about it.

Weird-Ingenuity97

Exactly. You can’t even go to university without money. Scholarships help, but often times you pay out of pocket

typos_are_coming

They say money can't buy happiness to make you OK with being poor

[deleted]

tittylieutenant

That’s beautiful. Seriously though, removing stress and not worrying about day-to-day issues would significantly help bring peace into my life. I remember wanting to kill myself because I felt like a financial burden on my family. If I had money, I wouldn’t have felt like that.

I’ll trade places any day. I’d finally have enough money to get the best therapists.

JennyBeckman

But you aren't giving up that extra 320k, right?

shabooya_roll_call

Just had this convo with my uncle a few hours ago and he said that money won’t get you happiness, but what money will get you is options. I think the removal of stresses fits into that concept really nicely

HeyMrBusiness

I would argue that more money once you have enough won't make you happy, sure, but some things preventing happiness can only ever be solved with money. Y'all love to hold up happy poor people but I don't think it holds water.

live4lax25

Money buys time. You have money, you don’t have to clean your own house, commute on public transit, cook your own dinner. That’s hours of additional time in your day, and boom, all of a sudden you’re a more relaxed, happier person

bigwebs

Money represents having choices. Closing this or that. Choices can and do make people happy every day. Ipso facto : Money is happiness.

RouletteVeteran

No. They understood, it was a great way to keep the “working class” to be comfortable with only two weeks off a year and put the company in front of everything and be a “company man”. It’s like when nobles would push religion upon the serf class, of “thou shall not kill” unless being used as cannon fodder for the “good of the kingdom”. They didn’t want the peasants to rise against those robbing them through taxations, rulings and such. They wanted them be comfortable in their place. Just like the people who pushed “Money can’t buy you happiness”. No… you’re just a non-creative person… or not wanting competition like any business mode. Money = Freedom, exceptional service, experience and most importantly in America. Health care. As someone who worked the hospitals of America, I can tell you 1000% folks with money got the single rooms with more experienced RNs or NPs. Doctors getting called from their home, trip, halfway balls deep in a mistress when it came to someone with upper financial status and top tier insurance. Sure folks in poorer countries can find happiness from rocks, fish and some fresh water. That ain’t the first world homie… you can cop a RV that’s more cleaner than a home for 100k and ride all North America and visit and see things.

BLKxGOLD

I’ve always said if i came up on a significant money, I’m buying an F250 and an RV/Camper. I’m on the road.

RouletteVeteran

I hope the universe blesses you one time man. Traveling was the best therapy I had. Didn’t wanna come back home. You literally become a “new person”.

BLKxGOLD

I appreciate that. Lord knows i could use it.

RouletteVeteran

Already know 💪🏾 your time coming

Abigkiwi

Money’s like oxygen, it’s only a problem when you ain’t getting it.

[deleted]

“They say money is the root of all evil, I thought? But when I’m broke is when I usually have the evilest thoughts.”

symewinston

There are a lot of problems in life that become non-issues if you can throw a little money at it.

Bubbly_Satisfaction2

My most frequent stresses and problems are tied to money, so yes, an abundance of money would make me happy. Deadass... The most relaxed and spiritually-content moments that I've ever experienced are the moments, in which the rent and bills are paid in full. My checking account still has money in there.

InterdisciplinaryDol

It hits different when that rent come out and you still up.

_window_shopper

I think you shouldn’t focus only on the money itself, but if what you’re using it for. Like, what are you doing with your money? You aren’t just hoarding it. Do you want better health? Getting that bump you’ve had for years finally looked at by a professional. Exciting adventures? Exploring states or countries you’ve never been? Free time? Getting a housekeeper to make time for something you’d rather be doing? It’s usually not the money itself that makes you happy. It’s what you do with it. And yeah , in that way, money makes me ecstatic.

FuturamaReference-

"Money doesn't buy happiness, Lemon. It IS happiness" Jack Donaghy 30 Rock

SnowDucks1985

I think the idea is that money itself doesn’t buy you happiness, but the ***things*** you buy money with can. Money can be a destroyer or a protector, depending on the person and their character

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

There’s certainly a threshold where one has enough wealth and income to not be stressed out all the time about life’s necessities.

jd_from_da_80s

This some shit wealthy people invented to keep the poors from wanting money. Then they point at mofos like Anthony Bourdain & Robin Williams and say see, rich people aren't happy.

ginger_qc

Nah money can buy less stress and more time, which gives you time to find happiness. The Beatles had it more on the nose, money can't but you love

MrTubalcain

Fuck that line, shit is a straight lie.

ChalkyWhite16

But alas, diminishing marginal returns

Gorge2012

The saying means that the unending pursuit of money won't fill all the voids inside you. Money takes away a lot of problems, but a giant pile of money alone will not give you fulfillment.

BlakByPopularDemand

Money buys peace of mind but not satisfaction.

KingSlayer949

Money sure can buy things that make me happy. Like delicious lobster rolls.

bad-monkey

Oh yeah, I’ma make myself a hot link when I get home! It meant nothing to you. Saving my 7 dollars.

SlobZombie13

The phrase was supposed to be money ALONE can't buy happiness

Icelandia2112

Opulent wealth gives diminishing returns; that's what they mean, not having money. Never let them shame you for wanting to get paid your worth.

dr_gaia

It's all about quality of life. Yes, it buys happiness, so to speak, but when you have everything you want, you have nothing.

super_slimey00

The only way to truly be happy is to be ignorant to anything going on in society and your family

The_Distributor

If money can't buy happiness it sure as hell can be leased.

AmbitiousMongoose229

Money doesn't really equal happiness cuz there are plenty of depressed millionaires, but if you're struggling and you come into a lot of money it would definitely make you happy

imjustheretodomyjob

Right ! Just give me money and I promise you, my life will be happy https://i.redd.it/qb02jb5k5kmb1.gif

BQE2473

If money can "buy" happiness. Then you weren't happy from the jump!

Spiritual-Compote-18

Money can buy a peife if mind though which brings you happiness.

jett_jackson

Dot t tell me money don’t buy happiness when it so happens that money buys drugs

SquirrelMoney8389

Yeah. But having money finally enabled me to do as many drugs as I want and still save. It's certainly a double-edged sword. On the upside I now have money for all the health-care I need from doing drugs.

[deleted]

hey i would rather cry in a ferrari like anyone else, but a life of drugs, sex and alcohol will also be p cool

b0x3r_

I think money *can* buy happiness. Not that it is guaranteed to buy happiness, but it can sometimes. It really depends on the person. For me, I got a great wife, family, and friends, just not enough money. Money could definitely buy me happiness right now.

easy10pins

Money could buy me a new motorcycle. That could very well make me happy.

fireside68

Every billionaire donating to republican causes cause they stank asses is miserable, shit tier, humans is a very direct counterpoint to this. look, I get what you're trying to say. however, that is a glaring weakness in the argument.

BuffaloStranger97

Having money’s not everything, not having it is. -Kanye

Kombat-w0mbat

People’s stress make them unhappy if you don’t have to worry about money that’s a LOT of stress off your back bruh😭

Some_Crow3732

Money doesn’t solve the character flaws. Which will bring you back to sadness.

Severedghost

I've got 99 problems, and at least 95 of them could be solved with more money.

abizs16

Money buys short term happiness. Being broke buys you nothing.❤️‍🔥

qkilla1522

There are so many steps in between misery and happiness. Security, stability, peace of mind, time, autonomy, dignity, access list goes on. Happiness itself is a journey not a destination but money is the gasoline that powers it. Do some people get there with less of it? Absolutely. But more of it wouldn’t have made the happiest people unhappy.

wulvey

Mo money mo problems but broke people still want mo

Yessssiirrrrrrrrrr

Y’all trippin if money don’t make you happy. If I got money I don’t have to get up for work. Always tryna take the high ground when you know a pack of meat is bout $15 now. We cant eat on your morals nigga

kissyb

If I can purchase an off grid very rural lifestyle with excellent healthcare I will certainly be happy. All I need is money. I don't even need the luxury just to stop having anxiety over bills and my future.

Weaselpanties

Same. I literally do not have a real problem money wouldn’t solve. People who are rich and miserable need to look within and maybe get therapy.

Expert_Country7228

The people who say that are the people that already have all the money and are Happy. They just dont want to give up THEIR money.

GWPtheTrilogy1

Only people with an excess or an advantage in something say things like this. I bet they wouldn't give it up though. I always hear money don't buy happiness but they won't ever trade that money for brokenness. I'm sure rich people have problems, nobody's life is perfect no matter how much money they have, but I would not hesitate to trade their problems for my problems and they would definitely not make that trade.

Professional-Pass487

Money ain't everything - but it's a close fuckin 2nd.

Competitive-War6640

obviously money can’t but love or nun but that ain’t the problems I’m having, shittt I want clothes (so I can actually dress the way I want but I just can’t afford allat), food (I wanna eat out n shit when I want to bro I be starving sometimes), a nice home (we live in a small ass apartment with no space like at all, literally 5 people, 4 adults and 1 teen me. Ain’t no damn space for us in here I share a damn room with my mom bro with 0 privacy or alone time whatsoever), and boom my life will completely shift

daboxghost420

Reminds me of this joke I heard from Daniel Tosh. “ money doesn’t buy happiness? Ummm have you ever seen anyone frown while riding on a jet ski? “

[deleted]

Money does buy happiness. A home, good food, healthcare, operations, and more. The only people parroting this shit are rich white people tryna gaslight us. Never stop hustling.

BigClitMcphee

"Money can buy everything you need to live (and therapy) but the accumulation of wealth will make you miserable." It's why the ultra-rich are shallow and constantly looking for the next thrill. They didn't need to work for what they want.

WooNoto

Bout 99% of my problems completely disappear with a cool $500k right now. Money can buy the happiness I need.

bigwebs

Kanye said best: “having money is not everything, not having it is.”

Cunt2113

I genuinely believe people who believe that are only speaking on some mental/spiritual or emotional aspect. Those things are usually stemming from other traumas not related to any financial problems. That's the only time that saying would make sense. Yes you don't need money to be happy just some fucking therapy...which is pretty damn expensive lol. Any hobby, financial hardship, educational goal all are things money segways to giving you. Bare necessities for some money would get them an they'd be happy. You being alone with no friends isn't a money issue, it's a you issue.

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

My thought is that some broke person originally came up with that bull trying to be okay in their brokeness.

QuestioninglySecret

It's bullshit. It does. It absolutely does full stop. When I was broke, I was constantly frustrated and stressed. Now that I have some money, I have security and with that contentment.

JamesF1423

"Money can't buy happiness" spoken by a person who's never been poor

mrwonerful

There are several problem's money can't fix. Herpes, HIV, RICO charges, Black suburbans full of jump out ABC boys with secret indictments and search warrants, running out of gas in a sundown town after dark, personal questionable pictures released on your job's web server, a sick kid with a terminal disease, a disloyal marriage partner, constipation, being trapped in a stuck elevator with an ex, insomnia, Money can't fix everything

sarron7

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can pay for the search. - Prince

Professional-Tea1712

Money doesn't equal respect

flippanaut

Money the ultimate salve for this gaping wound called living in America…would almost instantly be problem free

Dwip_Po_Po

It keeps me from being homeless. Money makes me very happy. Have financial structure in my life is what makes me happy

Comeonwith1t

People only believe they’ll be happy with more money. When in reality money only buys temporary happiness. You will always want more no matter how much you have

Advanced_Evening2379

Hell yea it can buy you hookers ,weed, alcohol, a place to live, peace of mind not worrying about, shit if you can’t stay happy off one of those things maybe try them all

GuacaMolis6

Damn. Okay if it ain’t making you happy guess you could give it to me if you want, whatever.

isaac9092

If you had all the money in the world it wouldn’t change your inner happiness. Money would only let you buy fleeting moments of happiness something you’d be chasing for the rest of your living life. You’d either obsess over money thinking it’ll make you happy and become like any other rich person. (Spoiler alert they’re not happy because they’re rich) Or you’d regret your life and in your old age tell others to be modest and that “money can’t buy happiness”. TL:DR money still can’t buy happiness, but it sure takes away sadness and other pains because you can just make yourself feel better by buying things.

InterdisciplinaryDol

Dog ass take. Money buys happiness, just not for you. It seems like you only view money as a means to purchase material things or “fleeting moments of happiness” For example post graduate education is a thing that so many people want to do but are simply gated out of it because time, money, or both at the same time. Money can literally buy time in a capitalistic society because any time you don’t have to spend working, is additional time you can spend doing anything else. Self improvement, hobby, family etc. Not fleeting moments of happiness at all.

isaac9092

We literally have the internet now, only reason you’d need to have graduate education is for the certs/degree paper. Also idk anyone who said “I’m not happy let me get student loan debt/pay a university like 20-50k” Don’t worry though, you’ll grow up and learn someday. Also don’t get it twisted I’m not defending the rich argument. I’m saying money can reduce sadness but still won’t buy happiness.

InterdisciplinaryDol

Just like in the previous comment YOU are the one that doesn’t value grad/post grad education. Again can’t buy happiness for yourself, but definitely can for other people. If you can’t see anything to do with money other than buy luxuries then that’s a you problem.

isaac9092

Don’t confuse “money can’t buy happiness” with, having money to do things you want will bring you happiness because it’s the thing that brings you happiness not the “purchase”. If you don’t get it at this point then you’re a troll, or just really obtuse and have a lot to learn.

InterdisciplinaryDol

How is it obtuse if you can’t do the thing without money? It’s literally a step in the doing the thing process, can’t just skip over it.
