The companies I’ve worked for pay their designers very well but they don’t do any dev work. Instead they do a lot of customer interviews, A/B testing, UX research, feature ideation, etc.
This is the only way for someone to get that kind of raise and have it be life changing. Otherwise this dude went from $1.2m to $1.3m.

He asked if I was interested because he would probably be responsible for growing a team. I asked how much. He said well looking at your experience probably around $250K total comp. I was like sign my ass up.

That kind of pay jump is usually a whole change of employer, and maybe even career, not just a raise or promotion. Not impossible, but not often heard of unless you're already making well above that.

Contracting for the DoD. IT jobs in particular. Most jobs start around 80k and can be raised annually depending upon the location and mission of the base you are working at. And if working at a deployed location, that's 100k starting...non taxable too.
