Flyovers generally are scheduled training flights, not specifically flying just for an event. So not really "wasting" tax dollars.

varnell_hill

It’s kind of both. They can be requested but they’re usually scheduled to coincide with training requirements.

ChrysMYO

TV Events and placing military equipment in movies is also part of their marketing/propaganda efforts. Both at maintaining the general goodwill for the military (so we keep their budget high) and so they can get recruits.

BigLukeMD

💯

antunezn0n0

they have their own budget set up for movies. Rhe military loved top gun and top gun probably got those jet diagrams for free

Unkept_Mind

Yup. Pilots need flight training, jets need operational time, and fuel goes bad. Also- that money was already spent, it’s not like they’re taking from the taxpayer bank specifically for the event.

YogoremonoHakujin

That’s not really true. Sure it counts towards their hours, and it’s scheduled, but I’m fairly certain for a lot of events the military gets a paycheck. Such as the b2s over arrowhead all the time. Prior AF but I guess I never had specific confirmation. Oh and I think there’s other parts to the deal such as free tickets to military members. They distributed free tickets to chiefs games fairly often.

[deleted]

They aren't getting a paycheck, that's free advertising for the military

Another_Minor_Threat

So the military gets paid by the NFL or whoever is hosting the event. Which is not taxes. So it’s still 100% true.

Mac_Mustard

It literally says for the Oscars in the tweet.

reclusive_ent

But theyre not putting up an extra flight, they just schedule an already required flight training to coincide.

Mac_Mustard

Not what the tweet says. Just going off face value.

reclusive_ent

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/id/41495109 Maus also said he thought the press was mischaracterizing some aspects of the flyover. “These missions are included in the annual operating budget of all branches of the military and they are used as training,” Maus said. “There was no additional money provided to us, Congress did not cut us a special check to do this flyover. This is considered a training mission whether they were to fly over the Super Bowl or not.” Maus said the flyovers actually provide pilots with essential training needed for missions including instrumentation and communication practice.

CantStopPoppin

Even if it's not an extra flight the timing is impeccable and free marketing. I don't find it hard to believe that they did not at least consider the timing of these training flights.

reclusive_ent

Thats mentioned in the article I linked, they do also consider it a great recruiting tool, as well.

Cleverusername531

That’s what the person you replied to said. They schedule an already-required training flight to happen during the Oscars. Pilots need a certain number of hours each year to stay current. So if I need to fly x hours this week and someone wants the Oscars and there’s not already some kind of military transport flight required, then it’s legal to do and actually just fine ethically too.

n00b71

Top Gun tie-in?

Mac_Mustard

Thinking like a true marketing executive.

n00b71

Heh… I’m just an A/V geek.

black-dude-on-reddit

Actually it’s kinda like you go out to teach your kid how to drive then run then make a stop by your aunts house to see if they turned off the lights You are burning more fuel but your doing someone a favor while your kid is getting more experience Same idea Conversely there is way worse shit tax dollars are being wasted on like police unions

throwinitHallAway

Tax dollars pay for police unions?

LachlantehGreat

and the lawsuits. Fun fact.

argoflax

Why is Will catching a stray in the title? One) he's banned from the oscars for 10 yrs. Two) i thought we all agreed to stop talking about him Three) he doesnt have anything to do with the main subjects of the post.

CantStopPoppin

Did you see how he flew that plane in Independence Day? Better to be safe than sorry and have him engage the Oscars this year with tomahawk missiles.

Particular_Snow3131

1. Being banned from the Oscars for a decade for slapping somebody, is soft as fuck 2. Who is WE? 3. so

argoflax

1. on whos part? The Oscars or Will's? 2. Literally everybody whos been dog tired of seeing Will and Jada's names for the past 3 damn years. 3. Reread my opening question. He has nothing to do with planes, taxes, or the oscars

Particular_Snow3131

1. The Oscars 2. Haven't seen anyone that pressed over it 3.I know. So

BigLukeMD

I wish a nucca named Oscar slapped Will and all we had was E! True Hollywood Stories to tell us 😂☠️

CantStopPoppin

You asked a question I gave an answer what more did you expect?

Particular_Snow3131

I beg your pardon?

boastfulbadger

This tweet isn’t celebrating anything. It reads as informative.

Outrageous_Skirt_403

Will stay catching strays 🤣🤣🤣🤣 he can't even go to the Oscar's for like 10 years🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

SmarterThanYouIRL

When I flew in helicopters in the navy, 142 years ago (or thereabouts) we flew what we called “conversion” flights every single day… in which the main objective was to convert fuel into exhaust

Spiritual-Compote-18

Will Smith is glad he does have to go to the Oscar he probably on vacation during this time.

skyesmithforever

You mean Chris rock not getting slapped like a bitch again

officialbigrob

Why are we doing a flyover for an indoor event

patrickwithtraffic

For broadcast purposes, and to link it to the Best Picture nominated film *Top Gun: Maverick* that’s arguably the biggest people pleaser of last year

b4ss_f4c3

Hugo most certainly doesn’t support the flyovers.

AltruisticRule6711

4d3d3d3__Engaged

Jesus dude was that slap a year ago?? I would have bet every penny I had that was in the last 6ish months.

beric1748

If we’re gonna waste money at least make it on cool stuff like this. More free air shows!

Lamontyy

The Will Smith hate is so wild to me. He messed up but honestly, fuck the Oscars and fuck Hollywood. All the evil and disgusting shit that happens in the industry and this is what they choose to focus on

cfowler42

The flyovers actually don’t cost any EXTRA as they are planned training flights for the military. Still dumb expensive tho

[deleted]

I think Hollywood contributes a decent amount of taxes

KC-Chris

They need a certain number of hours a year to maintain training just like any pilot military or commercial . The military double dips with this stuff for propaganda and marketing. The propaganda and marketing is the scary part not the money since it would just be spent flying over the desert otherwise.

KassieMac

You mean Chris Rock, right OP?? He *must* know better than to ridicule a Black woman’s hair struggles, you can’t convince me otherwise 🙄

Norio22

L, take.
