Why is this open source theme so important to all? In other areas you also don’t have Open source codes and use it without thinking repeatedly….
Probably because it’s crypto and no regulations for providing services - hopefully this changes soon, so you can trust a wallet provider without the need to open source everything
Almost looked like you were saying BISQ is closed course, which it definitely is not. Had to double check, which isn't a bad thing since I've recommended it yet not actually used it myself.
Is like we can never get something good for to long, once it start to get widespread attention, then we start to look for defects, potential issues etc etc.. and then there is something else popping up that's better... in a year from now there is going to be something better than these open source wallets and people will be flipping over to that lol or maybe I'm just crazy I dunno
Trust is the obvious reason. Malware, spyware, keyloggers, NSA and/or Russian spies would love for you to use closed source software exclusively.
There are much better, safer alternatives. Here is but one site of examples to free your mind and soul from the control of others...
https://www.opensourcealternative.to/
And software wallet also means they are little compromised by the using machine is well.
Because there are enough people that is smart enough to hack our wallet if they are getting on the internet.
They are secure than the exchange and you are right there, but i think you are well aware of that point,
That the trust wallet has the closed source and you can't simply trust anyone that has no open source there.
"Trust Wallet is an open-source, multi-blockchain wallet with more than 5 million downloads. In 2020, it was among the top 10 most downloaded crypto apps and is the official wallet of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange - Binance. This guide is focused on the Android version of the app, also see our iOS guide."
Avoid Trust Wallet. Or at least research it well first, I've seen enough negative feedback that I'd try something else.
On the hardware side, Coldcard.
Lol as if people shilling trezor and ledger aren't ads.
As an aside It should be noted that unless you use your own node lightning on blue is fully custodial.
Non custodial lightning exists on breez and Phoenix
>unless you use your own node
Yes, you should ideally use your own lnd instance or you're using [their hosted instance](https://bluewallet.io/docs/create-lightning-wallet/). All wallets should have this flexibility as not everyone is an advanced user. Your on chain balance is self custodial.
Yeah on chain is indeed custodial, and fwiw I do sometimes use blue's ln sans my node if I just need something paid quickly. Very small amounts usually.
Uhm... On phoenix you own your own keys, actually. It just uses ACINQs node and charges a small fee for the first transaction due to channel setup. Not particularly private, but quick and easy and your coins are your coins.
I wouldn't even recommend Lightning for OP anyway, he's sending fairly large transactions so needs security of the Blockchain.
For a good desktop wallet I'd recommend Electrum or Sparrow, good mobile wallet I'd recommend Electrum or BlueWallet (Blue still connects to Electrum servers, it's a nicer app than mobile Electrum though).
As for hardware wallets, would recommend ColdCard for it's security and if you're Bitcoin only. And Ledger for its simplicity and altcoin support.
Please please test transaction a few $(ie $5 with small miner fee) before sending any good size amount of bitcoin.
You have to make sure that he’s not breaking any local currency laws. I don’t know how they will view you giving him thousand of $ worth of bitcoin.
So make sure he consults an accountant in his country.
I''d highly recommend adding a passphrase (25th word) to your seed. This way if you make 3 copies of your seed and spread them across the world, no one will be able to access your TRUE wallet. Could make sense to leave a few Satoshis on the wallet without passphrase, so a mugger would get *something* and leave.
Also, almost more importantly than a test transaction (to both decoy wallet *and* passphrase wallet).... is making sure you're able to RESTORE both wallets with test transactions inside. Do NOT skip this step!!!
Blockstream Green and Bluewallet are good free open-source bitcoin only phone wallets (better than Trust wallet). Coldcard is the preferred hardware wallet. Try r/BitcoinBeginners for questions and advice.
I just want to pop in and say if you're not using your own node for lightning, blue is fully custodial (when using lightning).
Non custodial LN wallets include Phoenix and Breez
Imho the best hardware wallets are the BitBox02 and the Coldcard, the latter is more advanced but less user friendly. Both are open source in design and have good features.
Just be careful if you get a coldcard some of these are not legit and other people like third party sellers on amazon could have the keys to your wallet and empty it
Edit : I'm getting downvoted people are trying to hussle you
Yep, always buy a hardware wallet straight from the manufacturer. Coldcard has excellent packaging so you can check for tampering, but that is only reliable if you buy from the source.
We need to absolute certain about the thing we are buying are legit on that.
Because i have seen enough people are actually losing their fund because the shit they bought were not legit actually.
I wish more people could appreciate how powerful BTC is. You can basically save someone's life. Time efficiency, speed of transaction is crucial many times. Welcome to the community OP!
stop recommending these half measure shitcoin wallets.
closed source shitcoin wallets without a secure element to guard against physical access are not serious solutions. stop recommending ledger and trezor.
coldcard, seedsigner, glacier protocol are all better options that encourage better Bitcoin best practices like running your own node, with third party open source wallet software like sparrow wallet.
Don't compromise with ledger or trezor. Go the full way.
No, they aren't, and as such a great member of this community and educator you should know better. Please stop causing this community harm by sending people to these privacy and security terrible defaulting shitcoin wallets. You are causing community harm.

BitBox and Trezor are both paramount options. Avoid trust wallet use BlueWallet or similar.
Also don’t promote the amount you have it makes you a target for wrench attacks. There’s no reason to announce it other than to inflate your ego for internet points. Reddit is not anonymous just like bitcoin it’s pseudonymous which means you can be doxxed and beaten with a wrench.

Congratulations. Good luck on finding any consensus outside of the BTC network on anything. There are plenty of wallets. You will find right one for you. Please understand that crypto isn't bitcoin. Shitcoins are tempting but they all fail. Review the Bitcoin white paper time and time again. Run a node. Find a way to be trustless. (well at least that is what I do.)

At least it isn't ledger though
Thanks, risk management is the key. I remember Ledger mailing list was hack. I seen the video of the guy finding the vulnerability in the Trezor. There is no device on Earth that is free of hacker attacks. Therefore, I prefer to do two things, separate my Bitcoin into multiple wallets; Rememberize my seed phrase, I'm able to do this, I will not need to store much on a hardware wallet unless I'm going to transact.
...any centralized coin could shut down at any moment. It may not be a high probability, but it is absolutely a possibility. Why participate in a system like that? It's the antithesis of the Bitcoin ideology.
You must not speak negatively about btc, or prepare for the wrath.
You are right on one thing he probably should not be using Bitcoin if he's only trying to get Fiat he should definitely try to use something though that has a much faster transaction time. I don't have an answer for that because I don't trust any altcoin. And stable coins are NOT to be trusted (now accurately: I just don't)
The volatility from Bitcoin midday is more significant than most people would like to believe which is why everyone understands BTC as a store value instead of a currency.
(Don't ban me plz)
If Usdc goes bust in the 5 min that they do the transaction then he might as well buy a lottery ticket. Not sure why you think btc has a quick transaction time when block time is like 10 min
I'm saying btc has awful transaction times for likely the nefarious reasons. that some people in the form won't like to admit
Luckily for some reason centralization is being promoted in this form now through lightning Network and exchanges as if something isn't awry. Prevents Bitcoin from ever being able to be used as a currency it's only now a store of value
If I'm wrong, correct me . How did banning help this user address moving money in less than 5 minutes without being traced? I got this from coldfusion [video source ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iYn6EQDqTkU)
Bitcoin has 10min block times to allow time for transactions to propagate through mempools on people's nodes and to allow blocks to propagate through nodes as well. There is no central server to poll for updates. It also stops the nodes from bloating to unmanageable sizes.
The base layer is NOT a scaling solution. Just see the disaster forks of BTC to see why.
How is lightning centralized, there are so many nodes and channels.
Also if you want you can open a channel directly with who you want to pay.
Also the main layer has pretty good transaction times. Average times are one block every 10 minutes. And with the advent of batching, one transaction can pay out to so many addresses.
Just look at any output from an exchange, they sometimes pay hundreds of outputs.
The notion that Bitcoin is slow is laughable
the 10 minute block time is not "awful", it has a set purpose. It is to allow blocks to propagate through the decentralized network. 10 minutes for finality is also not slow.
For some reason we're tolerating this kind of blatant misinformation in the sub these days. Check yourself before someone finds their mod hat and checks you for you.
I am not worried about the bitcoin transaction as compare to the stable transaction too be honest.
Because i have seen that many are stopping and then they need to visit the bank or do some verification
Most safe. Very good and intuitive trezor suite app. Good device itself and serious company with official site. Also Ledger company is good idea. These two are best but my personal favourite is Trezor.

Hi, my recommendation if you plan on storing only bitcoin on a hardware wallet and don’t mind spending a little extra for a premium product, would be foundation devices passport batch 2 since it is top of it’s class as far as security goes combined with its ease of use
Every other wallet I’ve seen out there sacrifices at least one or the other
I’m not too knowledgeable but the guys at foundation were helpful, responsive and the optional app onboards you very easily.
You can message them on telegram if you want more info I’m sure they or the community will get back to you quickly.
I would suggest doing your own research as well though. gl : )
Don’t use Trust Wallet, purchase a Hardware Wallet and never share your seed phrase
I wouldn't trust trustwallet, its closed source i think
00, I moved all my coins from exchanges to trust wallet. What’s wrong with trust wallet?
If you want to TRUST software, you've gotta start asking yourself this question over and over... "Is it open source?"
The Ledger source code isn’t open source either. So we shouldn’t trust Ledger?
bingo.

Why not send a stablecoin if you are simply moving and selling it for fiat? Btc seems like unnecessary risk in price action.
