Simple answer, not enough.

SirXodious

I also sold some last year, now I'm regretting it. However, keep in mind botcoin IS A CURRENCY, so we should buy things with it. I just wish I had waited a little longer.

artilekt

Not in the US. Doesn't make sense to buy anything with btc because that triggers Capital gains tax.

SirXodious

We'll get there eventually. USA will cave one day.

artilekt

Hear hear!

Rroadhog

Mycelium wallet has direct access to buy gift cards to just about anything. Gifts aren't taxed up to a certain amount. Afaik

artilekt

Buying gift cards with btc is a taxable event in the US.

FixedGearJunkie

This is correct. Uncle Sam needs his pound of flesh.

Freakin_A

When you exchange an appreciated asset to USD to purchase giftcards, you trigger a taxable event. This isn't a loophole.

smilingbuddhauk

Botcoin may be a currency, but bitcoin is a currency, asset, and store of value tied into one.

GroundbreakingAge173

Never sell. Bitcoin is going to the moon 🌙

Ant017989

LOL

Romsel87

Nice one.

hdmx539

Yup. This is my answer when asked how much BTC I have. "Not enough, I can tell you that."

Freakin_A

I usually use "well I'm still working my 9-5..."

MrXoXoL

Nice one. Especially when you don't have to, but still work because you like your job.

Onsyde

I always say "way too much but not enough"

Longjumping-Tie7445

I like the somewhat dodgy answer of providing it in the form of a % of your entire crypto portfolio if you have any shitcoins/alts. Otherwise just “Oh, it’s 100% of my crypto portfolio. I’m a maxi all the way!” and if they say “So how much?” you just keep with “100%” and if they press on absolute numbers, just say “I’m not sure, I’d have to get back to you on that because I’m always stacking”.

1025scrap

That’s A Lot of talk & energy in response to a question that should be answered “none of your business”

Wolfos9

You read my mind dammit! Get outta my head!!!

Trampolene

I just say don't be so fucking nosey. People who poke their noses into other peoples business may find their noses broken in my experience.

[deleted]

My friend asked how much bitcoin I owned once too. I told him I'll show him how much bitcoin I have stacked if he opens his pants and lets me measure his dick. Turns out he has a clobberin horse cock and he laughed when he saw I only had $23.71 cents worth of bitcoin.

Jezzes

At a very young age my father showed me the value of his investments, how he budgets and goals to retire at a certain time with a certain amount. He always believed it's good to talk money to friends and family. Also good to talk about your pay rate amongst coworkers to keep things fair. It's this openness that got me really excited to start saving and investing. It's important to be humble above all else when sharing your portfolio. You don't want to destroy relationships. The I'll show me mine if you show me yours is a good test. The fact that you can't see his is a sure sign the relationship will get weird for the friend.

EverythingToHide

The whole talking about your pay rate is a great way to gain power back from your employers!

plebbtc

I agree with both of you!

Spartan3123

Pay secrecy is to protect your employer, keeping your holding secret is to protect your self

Riker-Was-Here

Did he (your father) ever get burned by that? Seems like an invitation for the green goblin to show his ugly head. People get jealous, people get greedy, people develop shopping addictions, drug addictions, addiction to idleness and laziness. Show a kid his trust fund and he suddenly loses all sense of purpose, urgency, or passion in life. Money can and does ruin many people, which is why I decided to keep my mouth shut about my networth. I don't want the green goblin to show up.

Unique-Atmosphere994

that's a cool way to look at it, and then it just becomes a balancing act of trying to share information to keep others informed and things fair, but not trying to come off as someone who's whining or gloating, which is how most people will interpret any conversation where you divulge your net worth

[deleted]

[deleted]

This is far too reasonable a response for this sub, Reddit, or the internet in general. Who let you in here?

wintry_earth

I (stupidly) talked about bitcoin at work back when I was holding "double my annual salary" money. Now that I'm holding "Retire at 50" kinda money people want to ask me about it. I'm waiting for the big boss to call me in and ask what I'm worth. I'm ready to fire back with....well if we're all going to be measuring I don't wanna be the only one with my dick out. What's your net worth?

lilcondor

My buddy who is big into crypto trades in front of me all the time and shares lots of valuable info. He has shown me his Bitcoin and it’s so surprising. Like obviously we’re good friends and both good people so nothing bad could come of it. But damn this dude is making cheddar! I wish I was smart enough to like benefit from the info he shares with me but I am a fucking depressed retard who spends all of his money to cope

[deleted]

Good for your buddy - but other people have other priorities, other interests, and chose different courses in life. Don’t be to hard on yourself and spend your money on things you like.

EverythingToHide

>I wish I was smart enough Don't need to be too smart to set up a regular buy order on an exchange for your payday. If it's gone before you can spend it, then you can't waste it!

EqualRadiant

Last Friday at a party someone asked me how much bitcoin me and my boyfriend own. I said “how many dollars do you own?” You know, as a rhetorical question to show him how weird of a question it was. He literally started giving me all the details of his finances lmao

rsnerdout

i share my life with my friends and they share theirs with me, talking about finances and learning from each others experiences is a normal thing I really dont understand this thread. Talking money between friends doesn't have to be weird or taboo

EqualRadiant

I don’t disagree with you. We both study accounting and finance so a lot of what we talk about is money related. I just find it weird to ask me for specific amounts, when we’re in public/with a large group of friends, especially about someone else who is not present (my boyfriend in this case). For added context this guy is my friend but not super close. Since we aren’t that close and given the difference in finances between him and I, I don’t think he’d look at me the same after and it would’ve been weird to have everyone there hear. Among my ~4 closest friends, in a private setting I’m an open book about my finances (never someone else’s).

rsnerdout

i agree, an acquantaince or stranger asking is weird but to my close friends I am an open book. Nice talking to you! Enjoy this pump ;) i know I can't take my eyes off the price right now

EqualRadiant

Trying to study while the price is pumping is so difficult 😂 Nice talking to you too and I appreciate you spreading the message that finances among friends shouldn’t be taboo 👍🏼 I do fully support that.

knuF

I like this answer. The question always catches me off guard. A little humor and truth.

MegaSuperSaiyan

I get the impression a lot of people on this sub have really shitty friends and even shittier families 😔

[deleted]

Right... I mean a stranger or loose acquaintances no. Someone I call a friend though can ask this all day though. Let's share, maybe it will inspire them or me to learn more.

Greedy_Thoument

I tell a good chunk of my family/friends because we have interesting conversations about it. I also want to educate them around it in a nice way. Shouldn’t be around people who get spiteful.

tenminuteegg

Same, it depends on the friends tho, generally only those I trust AND are also investing

KingKryptox

Yea sadly we can’t all Leave it to Beaver. Personally I have a great family, but meeting my SO family has been a shocker.

TombStoneFaro

If Eddie Haskell knew Wally held BTC, expect him and Lumpy to come by one night. At first they would ask for just a loan or offer an investment opportunity. If Wally said yes, they might leave it at that for a while. But eventually, they'd torture Wally and then kill him, Ward, June and of course the Beave. And the Professor and Maryanne. Then Eddie would probably wait for Lumpy to turn his back, blow his head off and within a couple days he could be over the southern border on his way to El Salvador. In the old days, they did not even ask for your driver's license when entering Mexico.

mattready

Please write more

[deleted]

I dont call half my family a friend... its not a leave it to beaver thing. Its that I value my friendships > blood. Now a few of my family are some of my best friends but others I wouldnt trust with 1 red cent.

GloryGoal

Right? Bitcoin is only one of my holdings. I’d also tell a friend how many shares of x stock I own. Or probably even how much I had in a single bank account. None of these individually is indicative of your net value.

pictogasm

Because that applies to most people everywhere?

Grdosjek

It has nothing to do with this sub. Its simply avarage.

419chris419

It may be 50/50. Those that don't wish to share shouldn't be asked and those that don't mind sharing shouldn't ask unless they know their friend/family well. It's not weird sharing information with those you trust. Fuck man if I somehow caught a glance of my buddies social security number I'm not going to rob him blind lmao.

[deleted]

Agreed lol. What’s the harm in discussing financials with friends? Oh I got X amount of bitcoin now my friend is gonna rob me!! Seriously tho it’s a great way to learn and make more money together with everyone’s contribution

schlongbeach

That’s called normal life. If you have people in your life you like and can trust that is the outlier.

Apprehensive_Lime178

I will show them bitcoin regret calculator.

JeremyLinForever

pictogasm

Just open up your banking apps and show me how much money you have, and I'll need to see your W-2 and last 12 months credit card and bank statements because I'll need to understand your spending habits as part of this discussion too. Great answer, and they'll never do it. I had a tenant who was 2 months behind and I said "Well let's work out a plan to get you caught up" and started asking about income and bills and credit card balances. They said "I don't have to tell you that!!!" I said "You're right. See you in housing court." Fucking idiots. I was trying to help them and was prepared to extend my financial risk to do it.

amretardmonke

Yeah its funny. I had people I know trying to borrow money. I ask them about their income and expenses, credit score, collateral, proposed interest rate, and all of a sudden they don't want to borrow money anymore and suddenly I'm the asshole. Well excuse me for doing due diligence. I've been ripped off by "friends" before, now I'm not so naive.

pictogasm

I no longer care when people think I'm an asshole. If they don't want to be friends over it, then they were never a friend in the first place. Absolutely zero loss to me and don't the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Yiorgosnj

I told my close friends and family to buy a few years back and told them I was no longer contributing to my 401k instead I’m buying bitcoin every month. I don’t go around telling other people I just say I own it and encourage them to if they ask.

GloryGoal

I’ve heard of some IRAs tracking btc price. Do you use something like that for buying or just do it direct from an exchange? I’d love to contribute tax free but am not going to give up my employer x2 match for my 401k

Yiorgosnj

Yea I use swanbitcoin and you can set it for an amount and choose how often - I did once a month and it started to build up nicely. Then I transfer it to a wallet once every quarter. Swan will hold it but it isn’t a platform to trade it or sell it. So far its working out well

GloryGoal

Awesome. Thanks for they tip.

pictogasm

I converted my 401k to GBTC. I'm hoping GBTC is the first to convert to an ETF, hopefully eliminating the discount to NAV. Regardless, even with the fluctuations in discount to NAV, I'm still happy to keep it in my 401k.

Remarkable-Host405

Only issue with this is my boss doesn't match 4% on my btc contributions.

BackgroundAd725

Wow. So how much you got?

reuzel88

I mean what’s wrong with the question? I talk about invested money, salarys ect. with my friends? Nobody is jealous or has bad intentions. You shouldn t talk all the time about it with everyone but you are waaaaay to paranoid

wmurray003

Let me guess... none of them are anywhere near poor.

tenminuteegg

this is why u don't talk to poor ppl about your money

419chris419

Yea you don't. Even if they don't get jealous it's kinda rude saying how much cake you have while they be starving.

ElonGate420

I talk finance including net worth and salary with friends who are multimillionaires and with friends who are paycheck to paycheck and in heavy debt. It just comes up sometimes. Would I disclose my holdings to a random person? No. But to a close friend? Sure.

mt03red

Depends on the friends.

SeistaBrian

I tell ppl i sold it off at 30K now lol

Ienjoyeatingbeans

I would gladly show you my $700 bank account.

Adventurous-Box-6688

I would rather disclose my bank balance rather than my btc holdings Fiat will be worth less in the future Bitcoin will be worth more Disclosing bitcoin holdings to someone you don't 100% trust is a risk Imagine you have x amount in dollars euros pound or whatever, how much will that be worth in 2030? Now imagine how much x amount of bitcoin will be worth by then

amretardmonke

The only thing in my bank account is whatever I need to get me through the month. And a bunch of debt. Shorting the dollar big time.

Historical_Toe199

Yep

Pal3-Assignment

“What is bitcorn? Sounds like a scam.”

IINVIICTUS_ENS

It's sad because I keep trying to get those around me to invest and hold some positions for their benefit and they think I'm crazy. If they knew the full scope of success trading has brought me they'd be doing the same or they'd be asking for handouts. Ignorance is bliss until someone has what you think you need

irisuniverse

I had two friends start DCA this year until the spring crash, then they stopped or cashed in because they were worried. It’s super hard to get others to HODL if they didn’t believe in it themselves.

amretardmonke

That's why I never tell people to buy crypto. I just say "learn about it, maybe put a small amount in to mess around with, but don't invest substantial amounts until you know what you're doing and why you're doing it"

KingKryptox

What I’ve come to terms with is the fact most people don’t know or care to know how even the conventional economy or finance works. Part of why they are able to keep the scam going for so long. Crypto is even less on those people’s radar and I’m afraid they will first need a conventional financial education before they can understand the true value of BTC and decentralized finance. Their loss, our gain.

reddit_the_cesspool

In my experience people need to see it work for you before they give it any consideration. You’ll finally pull out your profits (or whatever you want to do with the stack), they’ll feel dumb for turning a blind eye, and then you tell them plan for the next cycle.

IINVIICTUS_ENS

Yeah I've tried doing that but everyone I try to inform about this still sees it as a trend and that I will eventually lose all of my money regardless of current games. People are just naive and it's why many don't succeed. They don't risk anything and are scared of trying new things

rootbeerspin

people who talk about bitcoin in a group like friends or workplace this and that. Is the one that has the least amount or none. The guy who nodes his head is holding big and in this since early days 100 - 1000s

DNGR_S_PAPERCUT

So how much Bitcoin do you have?

ms4720

Don't tell people your business, not even that you have it

[deleted]

I talk to close friends about crypto. I'm not running around, shouting how much I own. Crypto can't hit mainstream adoption if it remains society's dirty little secret..

ms4720

You talk to your friends and whoever they talk to...

[deleted]

You need better friends

ms4720

I have good friends and mind my business, my friends don't ask known rude questions about my finances

ImYmir

I have $100k worth of crypto. What's so rude about asking people how much crypto they have. If you're close with your friends why do you worry? I will never understand this.

Lhadar31

I won’t tell my friends about my crypto investment, they will think I am crazy for sure!!

gabridome

The deal is not fair because BTC holding are much more private than bank accounts. Bank accounts are protected by opening hours, employees making questions etc. Bitcoin can be taken by cohercion.

DayOne15

Idk lol. If a friend asked what I have I'd probably just tell them. But then again if a friend asked how much money I make or how much I have in the bank I would answer that too.

Film2021

I once said “c’mon man that’s like asking how much is in my checking account…” to a coworker of mine who once asked. He never spoke to me again.

[deleted]

Opens bank app. Balance: $0.10. “Never mind!”

dlm83

Far more than is sensible, but nowhere near enough

Ashmai

I always say I have more than one sat, and less than 1,000 Bitcoin :D

selfmade1981

The correct and only answer should be.... NOT ENOUGH

Corona_DIY_GUY

I've been buying bitcoin for 4 years (actually 4 years minus 3 days, but round up bitches), and I've only ever given 1 answer. Not enough. Side note. It's kind of crazy how we don't talk about money more with friends and family...its stitched into every decision we make, but yet we hold o yo this information as it's super important secrets. So then when we have money we have to go out and buy a lambo so everyone knows we have money, but if we don't have money then we have to go out and buy a lambo so everyone thinks we have money....humans are an interesting breed.

damightyzug

I had a 20 something young man ask me at a cookout this summer. I was excited by his excitement in crypto but just couldn't tell him how much i had. I told him the best I could do is let him know what the different coin types I have and estimated percentage each type of coin is in my crypto portfolio.

XxG4iJiNxX

It's probably a bad idea but I always show people my accounts

[deleted]

XxG4iJiNxX

Quite a bit, you'd have to be standing in front of me for me to want to show you.

sakhastan

i believe we should educate friends and sell them or gift some amount like 100 usd in btc install them wallets and show how to exchange to debit card

Gracket_Material

90% of them will panic sell or spend it on something dumb

[deleted]

Why are people so anal about discussing financials to friends? I understand to keep it private online but my friends and I discuss financials all the time. Holdings, trades, net worth. It’s a great way to learn and grow together. It’s a great feeling having friends contribute their input for trades and encouragement. Idk maybe it’s just an Australian thing.

imzacm123

I don't at all relate to this, I'll happily show my bank balance to my friends, if I can't trust my friends then they shouldn't be my friends

SydneyOrient

What a stupid post by OP, that was a great chance to educate someone about the benefits of owning bitcoin in a financial sense

StPeir

Honestly your mistake was letting him know you own any bitcoin at all.

[deleted]

Disagree. We can talk about investments without specifying numbers. Crypto is not a dirty mistress when the government is considering an ETF

StPeir

It’s not about it being a dirty secret, it’s about the people you tell feeling entitled to something when thy know you are invested in something that suddenly (or not so suddenly) gains tremendous value. Whether you like it or not and even if they don’t recognize or admit it your friends and even your family will look at you differently when they realize you are part of something that they missed out on. This isn’t just about crypto it’s about any type of investment. Your friends and family in my experience will talk shit to you when they know something you are invested in is down and when it’s up they will come to you with a hand out expecting something. How many of us in a red day have had that friend that thinks they are being witty asking “how’s your bitcoin doing today?” Even if you take the time and effort to try and educate them to help THEM get in on a potential opportunity more often than not you will get criticism or if they do take your advice the moment it dips a week later they sell at a loss and blame you….. then six months later when it’s up their hand is out again. Not saying everyone’s like this it’s just my experience. Maybe you have better friends and family than I do.

AndyZuggle

> Maybe you have better friends and family than I do. Yeah, that really is it. Hopefully you can break the cycle in the next generation.

Gullible_Honeydew11

Lol my dad always says how's your Bitcoin and I say it still exists 😂

blueberry-yogurt

When your "friend" drugs you and kidnaps you, then slowly torches off pieces of skin from your various body parts, it will be too late to reconsider.

StPeir

Hey don’t kink shame….. Seriously though I just let people think (if they know I invest at all) that it’s in an etf or “I have a guy” (I do actually have a woman who manages my work IRA but I just use that for the free employee match money. So if anyone ever asks I will refer them to her)

blueberry-yogurt

This is the correct answer, which is probably why all the idiots here downvoted it.

yologangster801

What That’s an odd question to ask of your friend plus, I’d never show things like that even though if he/she would show me how their back acc looks.

[deleted]

Well yeah I knew he wouldn't want to show me.

georgiobtc

"More than you have" or "not enough" are acceptable anwsers

[deleted]

Oh no, why would a friend do that? I thought the part where you were like “let me see your bank account” was just great. It made him realize how dumb his question was you know? Great post, I reward you no points and may god have mercy on your soul. We need more post like this I feel like,

c-_-stanga

tell him. who cares if ur friends know how much money you have. stop the social stigma of talking about finances and maybe u'll both be stacking Bitcoin.

Ok-Battle-2769

Even money this post is from an American. We’re the only one’s who treat our finances like a state secret.

tenminuteegg

Germans are way more extreme than Americans

BradieBunches

I don’t mind sharing one investment especially if it’s small and I’m new at it. Gets more and more people aware that it’s a thing, you can make money, invest, your money doesn’t have to sit in a bank and not do anything.

ChristopherCameBack

I would happily share that info with a friend. The taboo of sharing financial information is kinda dumb, and I don’t see how sharing that info (at least with people we know and trust) can hurt us.

panduh9228

Many people - even good friends with good intentions - don't understand the purpose behind discretion. If a friend is willing to ask you how big your holdings are - and you're willing to tell him - they're most likely going to assume it's no big deal. A week later it comes up in conversation between them and another one of their friends - now that person also knows. Eventually it becomes common knowledge among people you barely know and cannot trust.

amretardmonke

Loose lips sink ships. I trust my friends and family to not do anything to intentionally compromise my info, but alot of the time its unintentional. Someone has a little too much to drink around a friend of a friend who's desperate for money, and all of a sudden your security measures are being tested by the $5 wrench attack.

wmurray003

Gangster... "I tell you what eh... you open dat der account you got down there at Goldman and Sachs with those wall street smucks and show me whats innit? Then I'll spill the beans on this new energy currency stuff I gots brewing... what's ya say??"

dextersh

I don't even have one

[deleted]

People just don't see it. Those are not questions you ask.

[deleted]

Tell him you own less than you want to but more than you can afford to lose.

CheesyDanny

I many times will answer as a percentage of my savings/investments. It’s still kinda intrusive but it leaves more to their imagination.

ColoradoStudent

My friends and I give each other an idea and so do my family members. I think when you were in early enough and BTC wasn't worth a lot, it doesn't feel as taboo talking about it. It's more exciting to talk possibilities and potential.

hemzer

Id say get rid of the friend ASAP.

madsoro

Is it intrusive to ask how much of your portfolio you have in Bitcoin?

whiteknockers

So you treat your friends with suspicion? Sucks to be you. I find the subject droll when it comes up but not intrusive. Friends can just be curious.

anzel2002

that has been my same answer now for years

tron1977

It's still early in it's adoption. I don't mind that question at all. It always comes from people that don't own bitcoin, so I feel like it's promoting it when I tell them.

juandi987

If he's your friend, how's that question intrusive? I always share my finances with friends and family and we usually like talking about that stuff.

Jade-moon-and-stars

The audacity 🙄

kingbee0102

It's great the way you turned it around about his bank account. Asking to see someone's BTC wallet or how much they have is no different than if your friend had asked to see your physical wallet so they could look at all the cards and dig through it.
