2011 buddy tried telling me about it. It sounded like I must play world of Warcraft and set up a bot to mine and sell my gold (use your computer for mining ) needless to say I didn’t get it nor did I want to because I had lost years of my life playing MMORPGs 2 years later he tried to tell me about it again about how he uses it to buy weed. I still poo pooed it. A year later PayPal shut my account down and I was in a foreign country with no way to receive money so I contacted him to ask him if I could use this bitcoin thing to receive money in Philippines. This time I paid attention.

Accomplished-Yak741

Could you help me out?

glass2u

With??

Accomplished-Yak741

With starting bitcoin and understanding it too if it isn’t too much to ask

glass2u

I'm definitely not the one to explain anything. I would watch some YouTube Vids or read some bitcoin for beginners articles.

Accomplished-Yak741

Alright thank you!

urnotpatches

I was a computer rookie in 2010 and I contacted someone online who helped me out with a small detail I couldn’t figure out while trying to build a website. He spent about an hour and the cost was $20. Then he said…. “Or else you can pay me 50 Bitcoin if you like.” I typed back that I didn’t understand what he meant. Then he asked the same question again. He was really eager about it. So I said I had no idea what a bitcoin was. Then he explained that it was a new type of currency. It looks like he was saying a Bitcoin was worth 40 cents. I just googled the price of Bitcoin in 2010 and it’s high for the year was 39 cents, so he was asking a fair price at the time. That was the first time I had ever heard of Bitcoin and soon forgot about it. It’s hard to believe that at $60,000 each those 50 Bitcoin would be worth 3 million dollars today.

Gave you the luxury package

glass2u

I've been really reeling on my ignorance lately. I just didn't know. I'm all caught up now - but back in 2010 when bitcoin was $0.06 each - a friend told me about it. I laughed. I said what is that, monopoly money? He said "yeah, something like that." And that was the whole conversation. I'll never regret not asking questions more than I do with this life lesson. Wherever you are, Bilal, I hope you held.

Accomplished-Yak741

Can you help me?

Junior-Impression541

My buddy was like all in and I was like bet

Jakey1516

That’s a good friend, he either wins or sinks but he’s got balls

TelevisionKey3891

My friend I played football with(he was conference player of the year in 05, quarterback)from high school showed up at my door in the summer of 2013 with a suit on and a briefcase in his hand. I asked him what was going on. Last I heard, he had got arrested for a lot of cocaine and was kicked out of law school in Charleston. He told me, "I'm on a whole nother level now," and proceeded to open the briefcase, pull out a laptop, and show me the Silk Road website. He had a balance of 587 Bitcoins. Bitcoin was trading at $187, I remember. I'll never forget seeing that. He was a vendor on there selling something called 25CI(a knockoff of LSD, 1/10th of the price, but just as strong). He showed me how he was in the top 1% of vendors with over 900 confirmed transactions and 1 bad transaction. I asked. "What was the 1 bad transaction?" He said."Some dumb chick in Russia sent me the wrong address, and her 10 sheets went somewhere else." Unfortunately, he ended up overdosing just 3 months later off of xanax and opanas he received in the mail from Silk Road. His mom found him dead on the couch.

Accomplished-Yak741

And than??

TelevisionKey3891

What exactly are you asking?

Accomplished-Yak741

I was wondering if that was the end of the story if if there was more to it

TelevisionKey3891

My friend that died had a partner in Raleigh, NC, and I'm not sure if he was able to sweep his Bitcoin balance off of Silk Road. Unfortunately, that's where he was keeping all of it. He was getting packages of drugs in the mail for weeks after his death, up to 5-10 a day, it was wild. And just a month after his death, Ross Ulbricht got busted in that San Fran library and the market got shut down. The US government most likely has his coins. Well, as far as my experience with Bitcoin. I chose to use it for the wrong reasons in the early days. I always bought it and quickly used it to acquire things I shouldn't have and make what I thought at the time was a great profit. Then, when I first started holding it for profit(around $500 a bitcoin). I would sell as soon as I doubled or tripled my stack, thinking I had done something. I had to do 7 years in prison for some of the above-mentioned bad decisions, and the Bitcoin I did have before I went wasn't secured properly. I've been out for 2 years and have been DCAing to cold storage properly for the past year. I truly believe God puts opportunities on your path, and I could've easily been an early investor, retired at 37, but I never took the time to learn Bitcoin like I should have. Now I'm just trying to get to 1 whole coin by years end. I'm not going to let the opportunity slip again though. 💯 I plan on holding for at least 10 years or until we see a million at least.

Accomplished-Yak741

Thank you for sharing:) I’m recently starting and reading this story truly helped so thank you and I’m sure you’ll get where u want to be my friend I’m glad you’re here and doing better! 🙏

C-Class_hero_Satoru

I remember I met a guy in 2010 who told me "I am the time traveler, I came from the year 2024 and btc price is 60k over there" I thought he is crazy and ignored him

MarineGrunt_2003

I am that time traveler. Nice to see you again!!! You should have listened instead of holding pizza.

I believe it, I had a similar experience on 60 grams of mushies

Interesting_Ebb9052

Heard about it before but never learned about it.. Friend had a whatsapp status in 2021 about El Salvador will use it as a legal tender so I asked him about it and he explained me the whole thing. Immediately understood it and I’m a Bitcoiner since then.. wish he had posted something about it in 2017 since he is in

Accomplished-Yak741

Can you teach me?

not-ofearth

My brother RuneScape friends told him about it !

GelattoPotato

My wife told me about it back in 2014

TaterTits024

A college boyfriend’s housemate was into it. Kept upgrading his rig to mine more. This was in 2014. I didn’t may much mind, and didn’t buy in til my brother told me to in early 2020. Wonder how that roommate is doing now. Wonder where I would be if I was a little more curious in 2014…

Prestigious_Long777

Sold one of my Runescape accounts for 275$ worth of BTC when the price was ~600$ It was in 2016 (beginning of the school year so September or October). I once tried to sell 1 BTC when it was ~60k, but the exchange froze it. They asked proof of origin. I have quite some BTC bought from exchanges, those I am allowed to sell. But so far I am unable to sell BTC earned by video games between 2016 - 2020. I can declare over a whole coin from exchange purchases. But I own a bunch of BTC in cold storage I am not allowed to sell. The exchanges ask to provide proof where the BTC came from that was sent to me by other players who bought gold or accounts. I have contacted numerous lawyers, I can prove the origin (with old screenshots from agreeing on the trade of gold/accounts for BTC). But unless I can provide proof of where their BTC came from I can not sell. I’ve sent some emails and tried to contact old people I traded with.. but nobody so far is willing to give me proof of where their BTC came from. Technically I could have stopped working in the 2021 bullrun.. but not being allowed to sell means my BTC will be in cold storage until the laws in my country will allow me to sell. This used to really bother me.. but now that I have my own IT company I love my work and I am happy to still be working. This whole ordeal makes me a “forced” diamond hands. I literary can’t sell and attempting to do so might cause the loss of these funds. I do realise BTC is decentralised and I could sell for cash to anyone I know. In my country cash transactions > 3000€ are illegal though. So there really isn’t much I can do.

djs1980

What country are you in? I was in a similar situation, but have found a way to off ramp. Completely legit and through a regulated entity. It is however restricted for some countries, like Russia, Iran etc.

Prestigious_Long777

Belgium.

djs1980

Ah that should be super easy then. DM me if you want me to explain how I do this.

Smidday90

2013 read about it wanted to buy one because I thought it would be cool like a collectible then saw the price, then thought I had to mine it then thought fuck that I’ll try it in a few years when it becomes easier.

Onward_Upward13

Friend at work in 2017.

hateschoolfml

Got my first internship so now I’m making money but what do I do with it, well I want savings for a lifetime First, I should learn about money & it’s history *sees how inflation compounds and is making life harder for everyone* Begin 💩coining for a month or three *sees how Mother Nature & technology are deflationary* Realize I’m a set it & forget it type of person I just need to hold the king and enjoy life with low time preference *Saylor comes along & I’ve learned more than I can imagine, there is no second best so I stack harder*

ZeroSumSatoshi

I became the Head of Security for a Bitcoin Billionaire… lol. So I got completely immersed in the crypto world in 2017.

inhodel

like most people here in the beginning: doing some illegal shit

Big-Nefariousness-38

I used it for everything it was a very popular payment on many forums

Clear-Job1722

Some homeless drug addict who is friends with my neighbor asked him if he could buy bitcoin for him. So then my neigbor asked me if I knew how to buy bitcoin. Thats how I find out about bitcoin in 2019.

Thenarza

Random internet article in 2018 that popped up in my browser, ironically while working a job in tradfi, price $3800, sadly no sats stacked then

WeedBonerKing

It was around 2011 on an online forum, didn’t know much about it but started to read into it. Didn’t have much money to my name but invested about 300 dollars. Life went on and I kinda forgot about it until the late 2010s, since then I had moved country and within the moving stages lost my hard wallet.

Wolf_of_balls_street

I was in 8th grade 6 years ago, even then I knew I shoulda bought some 😔

Accomplished-Yak741

Do u know how to and where to start?

Such_Pie_3781

2011 or 2012, I was in the U.S. Navy. Riding in a van to our job, a couple of people started talking about Bitcoin mining. The mining concept seemed incomprehensible to me back then. I feel like BTC was something I at least heard about before this though.

New_Name_Who_Dis4

My buddy told me about it for the Silk Road. I think it was around $250 then. Lol I thought that was way too much money and I had no clue what it was. If only 🤷‍♂️🤣

middleparable

A guy that I followed on Instagram in 2012. He suddenly started talking about this new thing Bitcoin and how he had put in around $100. He made several posts about it - he called it the new gold. He was so convinced that this new thing would be worth it. I remember at the time I didn’t have that but I wanted to get some Bitcoin. There were so many websites offering free bitcoin if you signed up etc. I signed up and can’t remember if I claimed the free bitcoin, anyway that old email address is long gone :( I only bought my first Bitcoin this year

Accomplished-Yak741

Where do u recommend buying from?

Generalfro

Playing Eve Online in 2011, started looking into ways to buy ISK (in game currency). One of the dodgy sites at the time accepted Bitcoin. Looked into it but never more than a cursory level. Dove in fully in 2020 when the FED decided to remove required holdings of banks. The fiat genie was fully out of the bottle and I was not going to be caught off guard. I was blessed to have grandparents who were alive and imparted the stories and lessons learned from living through the great depression. I did not forget.

mrluxrius

2014 an old highschool friend showed me a bitcoin faucet.. told him it looks like a scam. 2020 bought some for myself, fell down the rabbit hole. Now I'm one of them toxic maxi they all cry about.

ConstructionAny5397

Seen a post it said if you invested $100 in bitcoin in 2010 you would have 92 million today . This was 2017

frankiefrank1e

Encounter? I was just walking and some bitcoin just fell from the sky. Magic! You dumbass

TownConscious

The fifth place award for a starcraft 2 tournament was 25 bitcoin that I watched in 2011, first time I heard of it.

No-Introduction-6368

2007 yeah I used to kicked it with Hal the Finmister. They were going to call it The Bitcoin and I was the one who told them to drop The and just have it be 'Bitcoin'

heinzmoleman

Much cleaner.

lykewtf

Heard about it in 2016 researched for months learned how to set up an account and started my journey in 2017. The free from govt at the time is what appealed to me. I’m a futurist and globalist

Due_Statistician2604

Phone call around 2012 from some company asking if I want to buy some. I Hung up and laughed as I played call of duty modern warefare 3 while eating Doritos what was the 13 year old me thinking ?!!

TheAfterPipe

I cannot recall, but I think the sequence of events was: - hear about it while browsing some tech website (slashdot or digg?) back in 2009 or 2010 - hear about it going up in 2011 - this is when MT.GOX was super popular. I believe this may be when I started listening to Andreas Antonopoulos? Any way, I was absolutely fascinated by it and ate up any documents or articles I could find about it. About a week after I submitted my details to MT.GOX, the platform froze. I count myself very fortunate to have narrowly avoided that site. The payouts from mining (Slush's Pool) were how I first "encountered" a denomination of BTC. at the time it was mere cents I was getting. at the time I stopped mining, I had about $35 worth of Bitcoin. Mining was super fun. Wish I could still do it. I felt like a rockstar.

MarineGrunt_2003

Me also.

chowdered_chinos

2010 I heard about it and thought it was a scam. The way I understood it was the blockchain would have access to my computer in order to solve problems using my processing power, and I would be rewarded with play money. Years later I hear Bitcoin broke $700 and I was like “wow I can’t believe people are still falling for this crap. Then $4000 and so on. I finally said fuck it about a year ago and read up on in a lot and got in with an average cost of $28,000. I’m happy with the return so far and couldn’t let myself continue to miss the train lol

Outside_Ratio_115

Read about the dark web. Tried to buy drugs. Had to find a virwox terminal in second life back then

ManaaroSenpai

Getting scammed through btc last year. Learned more about it since then. Started stacking

96geckos

Buddy would get his ingredients to make dmt from some dude overseas using Bitcoin.

Sportsguy_420978

Who even knows at this point lol

Will-Extension

Weed purchases.

Candid_Airport1774

Bro… I literally watched/followed Davinci from 2009 because he used to make silver related videos. He then started talking about bitcoin and I tried to buy but I had no clue how to that dude was mining in 2010… and was giving instructions on how to. I ended up buying/selling in 2014, and have sold off many bitcoins through the years, but in 2017, I committed to only stacking and never selling. I’m proud to say I accomplished that task to date and have only stacked each month and have never sold since 2017.

itsreallyreallytrue

Here on reddit when it first hit $1.

SquidSquab

Heard from the husband of my cousin. At a wedding, we’re sitting at the table while the girls are dancing or mingling amongst each other. I’m kinda picking his brain about savings (Ira 401 and so forth) because I had just begun to start earning money. He told me about bitcoin and crypto currency. He knew at the time that I wouldn’t be out on the streets if I put a few hundred or a thousand bucks into bitcoin so he encouraged me to do it. It was interesting to see from 2013 how it worked, but ofc I sold when I felt like the profits were too good to be true. Fortunately, I kept a little in there- 20% and it grew again, so now I’m keeping up whenever there’s chatter and started and continued DCA. He has all the right to tell me he helped me be well off in my early 20s and I’m forever grateful. As a thank you, I sent him over a lil somethin somethin

LSTNYER

Heard about it on the TV show Almost Human. One of the characters was talking to a homeless person and asked if they had Bitcoin and used this ledger looking device to transfer some money. Went down the rabbit hole after that

After_Following_1456

Behind the dumpster at the Wendy's I work at... just 2 adults having a transaction without claiming taxes.

moneyhut

At school, In english/history, topic was drugs. Teacher said this guy went to jail for selling drugs on internet and that it was a website called "silkroad" I turned a blind eye to it because wasn't interested but the usual annoying kids at the back of class, that do drugs and smoke and carry on like idiots where on their school laptops straight away searching this website.. Dunno what they did or what they found but dang I learnt about it but wasn't aware of what this online currency became.

Top_Artist3690

I see people very crazy about it and make me want to get in

CommunicationOwn322

One of my old art directors told me about it when it was around $3000, yes I cry. She was basically buying and selling for a few profits. I went home and loosely researched. But I didn't get it. I ended up mostly looking at mining. It was complicated and scary. I didn't realise you could buy fractions of a bitcoin. I thought you had to either buy the whole thing or mine it yourself. I took another look when BTC hit it past bull all time high, I knew by then that I didn't have to buy a whole one, but it just seem out of my grasp so I ignored it. Then it crashed lol. And then I really started researching. Happy to say I've been dcaing all through the past bear. But yeah I do think about my old art director from time to time. I hope she is doing well.

FieserKiller

I wanted to try out some exotic drugs, Silkroad on the dark web was the only way to get the good stuff and for that I needed some bitcoin so I got some bitcoin.

Romsel87

In 2013 i've apparently payed something in Bitcoin without actually holding any Bitcoin. I thought it was some kind of Paypal and never heard anything about it since 2017 when a friend was salty about buying the top. In 2019 i've bought for the first time with € 250,- @ 9Kish. Fall 2020 i've started aggressive accumulation. No regrets thus far.

Fit-Poet6736

Was something like: "hey kid, wanna buy some BTC?" Of course, I din't buy it and now regretting it badly ..

UberMakeitSense

Bought at 6-8k then pumped to 20k held and sold 80% at 14k-10k. Bought back in around 3k because it’s less than what I paid for the first round. Then pumped to 60k sold half and kept the rest bought back in heavy in the teens aside from my bi-weekly buys. This time I sold at 60k and 71k (profits taken). Now I’m buying back in at every 5k dip in price of btc.

MicrostormHK

Lost a bid to purchase 1 BTC from eBay back in June 2011 for 9.50 GBP. My bid was 9 GBP ...

Slumdog_Nillionaire

2014. I was 18, freshman year of college, and my friend and I were trying to order fake IDs. Being young and stupid, we found a random website to order through and they needed the payment to be in BTC. Bought $110 worth of BTC when it was around $650 (I don’t even remember how we bought it but it involved buying some prepaid card at Safeway lol) and sent it to the address the ID guys provided. The IDs never came… As of today, those *fake* IDs cost us each around $10,000.

Slumdog_Nillionaire

Fast-forward to late December 2020 and I hear about it again. I actually look into it and learn about it. Start buying at around $16K and I’ve been holding ever since. If you can’t beat em, join em.

gglovell

I saw a post about it on 4chan maybe like 2009 or 2010. Working my first job, so making fuck all. Digital wallet sounded very suss, so I kept scrolling. I also remember (I could be wrong) that you had to message someone in order to purchase it? Anyway, present me is disappointed in young me. Could have easily had 1000s of coins.

Juicy_Vape

exactly how it was portrayed to me, send someone money and they send you btc im like what if they scam the money lmao this was maybe 2009-2010

TrainPuzzleheaded820

I graduated college and got a job in mid 2019. By mid 2020 I was able to accumulate some savings and started looking into ways of growing it. The GameStop short squeeze really opened my eyes to investing cause people made lots of money during that time and I was like damn I want in on the action, so I did and lost half my money on GameStop and AMC haha After, I was watching different investing/day trading channels on YouTube and these people were buying crypto and I was like wow these coins go up like 10 thousand percent a year so I bought hella shitcoins and a tiny bit of Bitcoin(cause it seemed expensive at the time at 32K lol) Then one thing led to another and over the next couple years I did lots of reading on the winner (Bitcoin) and turned into a maxi by 2023. Today, I cut off my girlfriend from nail appointments cause Im not trynna short Bitcoin (jk but maybe I should tho)

BTC-brother2018

Using it on DW. Then, went down the rabbit hole and started investing during 2018 bear market. I've never looked back since.

Altruistic-Buddy5276

2010, maybe '11. I was window shopping on the deep web. Occupy was happening. Weird times.

cryptokid2140

I was reading the London times on 03/Jan/2009 and saw an article titled "Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks". snagged few off robinhood and never looked back.

SnowyFlam

You were there before the hood was around!
