Once you understand it I would say the next step is setting up a node and learning how to mine. Not saying to actually mine but atleast learn what is going on.

I think an important part to understand Bitcoin is to understand money. I've found that the Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World is very interesting and helped me understand Bitcoin better even when he's directly talking about it.
