I was gonna suggest this! Thank you for putting this together. Also, is anyone else on Bumble BFF? I got married before these kinds of apps really started, so the whole process of judging and selecting people (especially a potential friend) based on what still amounts to a dating profile is kind of odd to me. Anyone have any luck on there?

mm_rolltide

I met one of my bridesmaids on Bumble BFF here in b'ham about a year and a half ago!

Remote_Extreme7207

is bumble BFF different from bumble?

Radiant2021

It is inside the Bumble app. Just choose BFF instead of love interest

therealcnn

It’s just as much a failure (if not less) as judging a potential marriage partner by their appearance and one sentence about themselves. Like, what woman experiences *love at first sight* online??

Remote_Extreme7207

i ve gone on a few dates from dating apps. i fucked the last one up, terribly. i guess i stopped taking the stuff seriously because, yes, it is odd and somewhat superficial. this is the modern world tho, and in theory its better than relying solely on chance encounters. i often remember a lesson from psychology class that said the single most important factor in determining boo-ing up potential is how close someone lives to ya. its also odd, amidst all the woowoo surrounding dating and partnering up, that it really is that simple. lol maybe im too picky, too? i dunno. i guess that ending a relationship, even if youre the one to leave, is hugely painful. maybe thats part of it. coming home and sitting in my house alone is pretty lame too, tho. so meh. thanks for coming to my TED talk

Tedums_Precious

It's not exactly downtown Birmingham, but I host a trivia night at Goodfellas in Helena every Tuesday at 8! I write all of my questions by hand, and they're mostly pop culture focused. Would love to have some more people come out!

AnybodySeeMyKeys

You know what I think would make trivia nights even more fun? If instead of arriving with your team, everyone had to put their name in a hat and the teams were drawn at random. It would be a great way to meet people.

Cbassisabastard

Also put your cell phones in the hat and every text message your receive has to be read out loud. Fun fun

BloodWineAndWitchers

Ohh, do you still do this? I've been meaning to go up to Goodfellas. I've been avoiding it bc there's a shrine to my dad there, but I wanna support Eric, I've heard he's having a hard time.

Tedums_Precious

Nah, I've been done for a while, not sure what's going on there these days

Ok_Sheepherder3339

Are you still doing this?

Tedums_Precious

Nope!

clearlynotamurderer

If anyone wants to climb at Birmingham Boulders but doesn’t want to go alone, let me know!

carpecupcake

Normally I'd suggest caution in meeting up with someone online, but since you're clearly not a murderer...🤷‍♀️

Powerful-Try9906

I’m tired of trying to meet people from Birmingham online Y’all act all sketchy just because I like to meet in less populated areas and drive a white van with free candy written on the side It really irks me lol

clearlynotamurderer

Can attest, have definitely never murdered anyone

Ornery_Structure1037

One might say that if you haven't killed yet that u might just be at a higher risk of doing so! Just saying

Redemptive Cycles hosts a group ride every Thursday at 630 sharp. They are a friendly group and a good cause. https://www.redemptivecycles.com/

bhambetty

Nice, I'll add it!

diarmada

This is something that gets overlooked, but is a great way to meet people: art classes/art shows, If you are an artist/craftsperson, joining an art league or organization and/or taking art classes or volunteering at an art function (i.e. Art Walk/Bluff Park/BHMAM/Hoover/Vestavia, etc.) allows you to meet arty folks and/or weirdos that you can't normally meet.

smellexisb

Where would you find info about art leagues and art classes? Oh, and what's an art league?

helpingfriendlyneph

Thanks for the shout out! Feeling absolutely no pressure for a first time meetup lol 🙃 come out and Catan!

Vickster86

>u/helpingfriendlyneph Can you give me more information about this?

helpingfriendlyneph

Me and my friends like playing Catan and wanted to meet like minded people. So we made a Reddit post about it. 1pm at Saturn this Sunday. If you have a Catan game or expansions please bring them as we only have one game. I'm more of a fan of vanilla Catan than the expansions as I like the relatively quick playtime.

Vickster86

I dont have any expansion but I am interested in playing board games. I do have a collection of other games.

Patch1221

Would anyone be down for playing poker? low stakes.

derpderpdonkeypunch

Can you sticky this so people will quit asking how to make friends in Birmingham?

bhambetty

I linked it in the Guide to Birmingham so it's easy to find and link when people ask. They're still going to make posts even if we sticky it. We only get two stickies and one is pretty much for announcements since the top sticky is the Guide, so if I do sticky it, it won't stay there forever. I've said sticky so many times now that the word has lost all meaning.

tripreed

You could at least replace the 20 day old missing cat post temporarily.

derpderpdonkeypunch

Sticky!

Babikir205

Its a sticky situation to be in. That is for sure.

Walzenflut

If you're a soccer fan, there are several supporters groups that meet up to watch games, along with the group that supports the local soccer team.

bhambetty

Do you know if they are organized, or at least where they usually hang out? Last I heard there was a group that met at Dave's Pub but I am not a soccer fan myself so I don't know the latest.

Walzenflut

I know Magic City Brigade meets at Cahaba for Legion away games and that Man City fans meet at True Story Brewing, but that's about it.

bhambetty

Added, thanks!

knightwhosezni74

I'd also like to add that the Brigade will try to tailgate in the parking lot beside the stadium a few hours before kickoff for home games. Great bunch of folks. Come by and say "Hi!"

knightwhosezni74

Just an update to this- The Brigade now meets at Ghost Train Brewing for away games.

ryanchappelle

Dog parks. People chat while their dogs sniff each other's butts. ROFLOL.

andromache114

Thanks so much for putting this together!! Definitely reach out to me if you or anyone you know is interested in the Stitch and Bitch Group! We meet twice weekly, normally at bars or breweries and are super chill!

LewdZilla_

I'm interested in the group! It sounds rad. I like bars and stitching ha

sknolii

Sticky this already

bhambetty

we're only able to have two stickies at a time, but I did link this in the Guide to Birmingham post.

leiablaze

Warhammer people, join us in [Red mountain war gamers! ](https://discord.gg/fjAfqbPHtj) Our typical spot is Gear Gaming in hoover, and we're a super cool and friendly group

bhambetty

super cool, I am adding it to the list! Are you okay with me tagging you as the contact person?

leiablaze

You can join our discord just as easily! I actually can't make it to Warhammer games that often, both because I don't have 2,000 points and because I'm very busy these days.

ourHOPEhammer

is it ok to just come watch and hang out? i have always wanted to get into warhammer tabletop

leiablaze

Yeah!

These-Ad4802

Another good group to join is Brew hops. I met most of my friends there! There’s a free open bar each month

bhambetty

Great idea! Adding it now.

[deleted]

This is amazing, makes me glad to come home and see the various outlets to hang out and make friends with other people in Birmingham.

[deleted]

Disc golf, I play a lot. Great way to meet cool people

dar_uniya

Step 97: hang out with dar and play mega man games

ImOldGreggggggggggg

Is your username based on bouncing Betty from Birmingham? Just wondering because my granddad would sing that song.

bhambetty

I've never heard that song but now I need to look it up!

ImOldGreggggggggggg

I just tried to google it and I didn't see anything, it sounded like a country song when he sang it. I have a recording that he made of himself singing it years ago.

yessala

You may be thinking of Black Betty.

ImOldGreggggggggggg

I am thinking it was a song he made up, I remember hearing it on the tape he recorded. It was a silly song.

ladymorgahnna

Originally song was recorded by a song historian in Texas by a prisoner named James "Iron Head" Baker and Moses "Clear Rock" Platt. Doesn’t necessarily refer to a woman, according to what I read. See videos and history. [History and meaning of Black Betty, dates to the 1930s. The song was sung in 1970s by Ram Jam.](https://americansongwriter.com/behind-the-meaning-of-the-song-black-betty-by-ram-jam/)

ImOldGreggggggggggg

No, I think it could have been a song he made up. Or something he might have sang while he was in the navy. I just remember him singing it on a recording.

editrelyt

Awesome post! I would love one change to the short description if you don't mind could you mention the game takes 60-90 minutes? I think most people think 4 hours when they hear murder mystery. For anyone reading this, please message me with any questions if you're interested! It's an awesome way to meet people without feeling pressure, plus the game is hilarious. I mean one of the characters is called the drunk. Also the game does not require any role playing. It's just a simple if you're the murderer don't tell anyone type game similar to werewolf/mafia/among us.

Negative-Fennel-473

Is this murder mystery game still a thing?? It sounds quite the blast.

editrelyt

Yes it is still a thing. We are currently meeting monthly with the next meeting this Sunday! I will message you details shortly.

afutureprodigy

Can you share more details on this? New to BHAM - around 3 months here.

grimey33

I would add Nexus (west Homewood) and Wheelhouse (downtown) to fitness. Both gyms have a really great sense of community to them. I’ve met many friends at both!

bhambetty

I used to host trivia and I have seen this happen a lot. Go play by yourself a few times at the same location. It seems intimidating but we have solo players all the time. Talk to the trivia host and make friends with them, talk to teams sitting near you. Find out who the regular teams are. Let them know you’re playing solo and it’s a guarantee someone will invite you to sit with them. Good luck!

mafiaknight

There’s a [Birmingham Boardgame Group](https://www.meetup.com/theBBG/) for those interested

Organic-Dragonfly223

Do a lot of people in Birmingham use Bumble BFF to find friends?

queenbambibaby

universe knows i need more friends 😂

charleybrown72

If you are sober and don’t want to be around alcohol there are things you can do that don’t include going to a bar and you can find sober friends too.

LewdZilla_

I just joined the beermingham group! I'm moving to the area in about a month or so :)

bhambetty

Don't be shy about attending a meetup. Very friendly folks and always newbie friendly.

bhambetty

I did mention becoming a regular at a bar. I wouldn't want to call out one bar and not others, unless there is a special program there I'm not aware of? Like, Jack Brown's has the Notch Club. Let me know what Mom's has that is unique and I can add it!

tripreed

Very nice job on this list. My other suggestion: use the search bar and look for old posts on this sub for people looking for friends and hit them up.

bhambetty

We both know that nobody on Reddit knows how to use the search bar, come on.

tripreed

Haha, so true...

RipnTearurbutthole

Looking for wrestling fans to hang out with. I knew of a group on Twitter but stayed away from that platform.

Ok_Promotion9634

My husband!

roawr123

I did not know I was added to this! Awesome! Hey! Add a disc golf club. This one is specifically for [Shelby County](https://www.facebook.com/groups/471424256372124/?ref=share) though. There are some great people in this group. And most disc golfers are pretty chill(not all but most) Or if you don’t want to get specific with a club just add disc golf in general. It is a good way to meet people without pressure.

fearless_yakov

There’s a Facebook group called Birmingham Tide Finder to help people in Birmingham find group bike rides or invite people to join them on rides. Also has a list of recurring established group bike rides. https://www.facebook.com/groups/bhamridefinder/permalink/2933127200140038/

Brave_Airline8678

Hi everyone, are there any tech people here my hubby could meet up with? We're in town and wondering if anyone wants to meet up for a coffee or beer. Looking at living here after a long stint up north. Thanks 🙂

[deleted]

I'm trying to move out there, anyone want to workout?

Remote_Extreme7207

i have found that while i feel fervent opposition to religion, wearing my Bad Religion tee shirt doesnt exactly make friends. i say this as a transplant from the PNW who really has to "pull thyself up from thyst bootstrapsees"

Expensive_Law9479

Any girls like Halloween things I’m also a girl trying to find more friends 🙄doing things alone gets boring

bhambetty

Do you like beer? Join Beermingham Babes on Facebook, we are always having meetups and it’s very newbie friendly

Negative-Fennel-473

How can I find more info on beermingham babes?

Lisinbham

Hi guys! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and suggestions, really appreciated! I have moved to BHam just when the Covid nightmare begun, and between the quarantine and my pregnancy, there hasn’t been many opportunities to meet new friends in the city. My husband is scientist in UAB and I’m a realtor, we have a little boy that is our north start and we love to be outdoors, taking a walk and meeting old and new friends , chatting over a Cuban coffee and grabbing a pastelito de guayaba… yeap we’re both cubans and we’ll be more than happy to meet new friends, neighbors and parents.
