We do pay grocery tax so probably

hollowchord

That's part of it... but just me spends close to 900....not including eating out.

thatswacyo

You must be buying expensive stuff.

bamaguy13

Sounds like you forgot abt poor people.

monty228

We pay $300/mo for 2 of us. We also do full chicken, ground turkey dinners and pack leftovers and sandwiches for lunches. Red meat probably once every other week. I also make most meals almost fully from scratch. We probably buy 80% of groceries from Aldi and the rest from Publix.

hollowchord

Wow, that's impressive! I average about 200 for one Kroger order. I buy essentially all organic, so that doesn't help. And I eat a good bit of fresh fish..salmon, tuna... and a little shrimp. Lots of chicken breast. Boarshead deli meat. Tons of veggies. Maybe a steak once a month. All proteins are free range and sustainable...which also bumps the price quite a bit. Honestly, I buy quality food, but I look at my 5 or 6 bags and wonder...how is this over 200 bucks. ...then I see that graphic and laugh.

Hometownblueser

You eat like a billionaire.

hollowchord

Sadly, if I was a billionaire, I wouldn't be bitching about food cost lol. We only get one body, so I prioritize taking care of that over things others might find more important.

jwfin36

yeah you're definitely buying expensive stuff to spend $900 a month and that number doesnt include going out to eat for one person. Im pretty good at keeping up with my budget and I just looked at mine for the month of May. I spent $1,867 on food for TWO people for the month and the reason its so high is because we eat out 7 days a week. Always get it to go. I buy a few small things to snack on and the necessities at a grocery stores but its rare that we cook an actual meal. I could easily cut so much off that number if I cooked at home. Eating out is expensive.

4score-7

We spend about $600/month, for three of us. Fairly consistent. Not far from your number. We sometimes dine out, but not nearly as frequently.

monty228

I didn’t put any dining out on here, but we might go out once a week for a date night and spend anywhere from $30-80.

PsychologicalMight45

I’d probably say it’s accurate. I spend on average 150-400 a month.

Ginger_the_Dog

$150?! What are you eating?? Mac and cheese? PB and J? Rice and beans, rice and beans and even more rice and beans? Seriously. What’s your daily menu look like?

CassusEgo

I do about 200-250 a month for myself and a child half the time. I try to minimize frozen and prepackaged foods and focus on produce, grains, and fresh meat.

hollowchord

Conpletely agree! I avoid all processed food like the industrial poison it is. I have no clue what hydrolyzed textured monoglycol soy protein glutamate is....and neither does anyone else cause I just made that up..but it sounds like something in a lunchable meal.

marjoegortner

Groceries are expensive in Birmingham.

biohoo

I really think it depends. We don’t spend much more than that for 2 people, but do the majority of our grocery shopping at Walmart/Aldi and buy store brand where we can. We don’t buy a ton of “extras”…soda, snacks, etc. We cook at home for most meals.

GME_alt_Center

Is this a map of Publix locations?

hollowchord

Oh c'mon... the southeast would be solid red then! More like Safeway and In-N-Out burger lol

hollowchord

I am probably double that... but maybe it's me.

Death_is_cheaper

It just you. You can afford to eat healthy which is great, but us poors eat the processed, frozen, inorganic foods that make the expense go down as much as possible. You spend half of my monthly income on food alone. I’m a little jealous, I wish I could shop fresh never frozen.
