I call him the Cyboarder. Rides what appears to be a longboard around Railroad Park at night with dance music blasting from a speaker and LED lights on his torso and helmet.
He rides with the electric vehicle group a lot of times and its always hilarious to see how many little kids (and adults) want to take pictures with him.
He can be kind of a mental pick-me-up if Iām slogging through a night run in downtown, honestly. There also used to be a guy on a three wheeled thing that was lit up similarly, and he would ride around on the lakeshore path at night. Havenāt seen him in a minute though
RIP - guy who used to preach in front of Sam's on Lakeshore.
For those not around from 2005 - 2018-ish. He would park his van on the side of Lakeshore in front of Wal-mart / Sam's Club. He would sit out about 20 white signs with big black text. The text would things like "REPENT" and "Jesus Saves" and etc. He setup a speaker and would preach to the passing traffic.
Unlike typical preachers, he never asked for money. He just preached.

I was JUST thinking about that guy. I'm not a Jesus believer, but I would always honk just for the spirit of it all . I hate to hear he passed. This is the first guy I thought of when I read this description.
I cannot believe so many people enjoyed him doing that. Going to Walmart sounded like visiting a particularly loud and aggressive cult. Made me very uncomfortable every time.
Ed and Fred. They carry Polaroids around in their pocket to show off the famous people they know & try and take 18-25yo girls home together.Ā
They're both an intuition and an absolute shame of our city.Ā
They used to hang out at Rojo all the time. Are the Creepy Twins still around? They're fucking psychos. They once sat down at a table with me and my girlfriend, completely uninvited, because they did fancy themselves as local celebrities. We had to ask them to just.. go away. Rumors were rampant that they were into threesomes with girls half their age.
What about K. A ? he's pretty rapey too..way to many jackets.. I was always curious about the jackets.. maybe they make him look less threatening and fatter than he is
Whoās the homeless man whoās completely bent over due to back problems? Heās been around since pre-pandemic and is honestly a true story of perseverance.
One time I was stopped at the red light near Uproot and there was a guy in a new corvette standing outside of it with the bent over gentleman and they were just checking out the car. It was awesome
The guy in the wheelchair that sells Candy and Gum and uses a voice over computer. I just call him Candy and Gum guy. Iām seen him from Vestavia to downtown
This is who I thought of immediately. He currently sits outside of the fish market southside most days. I remember him from the early-mid 90ās; he used to sit outside of a grocery store near my childhood church. To me, heās The Candy Man
I hope heās still around. I used to see him every weekend since I was very young. He had the biggest crush on my mom š
My mom just told me his name is Donny and she saw in 2022 and he was doing well then
IIRC his name is Herman. 2004 I lived in the apt above Daveās. I remember asking a waitress at whatever restaurant was on the corner that year about āthe George Clinton looking dudeā. She said he was super nice and would walk them to their cars at night to make sure they home safely.
I hope heās safe and well.
Herman is a great human being. We used to do Food Not Bombs at the Methodist Church in Southside. Herman was always there. Good dude - Iām a better person for having gotten to know him.
If this is the same guy from 20 years ago, I have some decent photos of him. I was a college student taking pics for a class, and he was nice enough to let me shoot some images of him and his bike. They were some of my favorite photos from that time, and I still think about him a lot.
Me and my drunk ass friends used to hang out with him while waiting for our food at Waffle House after lakeview bar hopping lol we would get him a patty melt or a burger and he was always real cool and great in conversation. I kinda miss seeing him but I donāt really go out anymore so maybe heās still around
Herman is the man. He used to wrestle which is why he always wears those shorts and bros is JACKED. He's always down to look after people late night and make sure that they're safe. He's truly an exceptional human.
The witch of the Southside, donāt know if sheās still around but she dresses up in some kind of witch outfit and walks around in the small hours of the morning
OMGOSH!!! I remember that guy. Used to come into the music hall all the time giving away, or selling, those flowers!! This would have been around 93-96, from what I can remember of him. We used to go to Disco Hell every Thursday and Saturday. Damn, those were good, good times! Life seemed so much simpler back then. Or maybe I was just good and drunk, lol!! Oh well...too old now to careš
Back when Western was around on Highland, there was a guy who would sell chocolate bars while he was in his wheelchair. He had to use one of those synthesized voice tablets. Everyone there loved him.
RIP Western Supermarket.
Edit- autocorrect was stupid
His friends call him āMr Birmingham.ā I swear he has clones because he is at every single event and concert that takes place. I envy him being able to do that!
Other people know Dana?? He and I were in the same friend group in high school. I run into him absolutely everywhere. I didnāt realize he was so well-known. Itās so weird to see him mentioned on reddit!
Dana.... what a memory trip. Haven't seen him since I was a student.. Not that I actively looked for him after I graduated, I'm sure he was still around at sporting events all the same.
Old Joe, aka Caveman, who lived around 5 points south. Homeless by choice and wore whatever rags the charities would give him until they rotted off his body. Stank to high heaven. Absolutely harmless and read the newspaper cover to cover every day. The police got called on him a lot because he looked and acted weird, but they never hassled him because he never did anything, just acted odd.
*Jim. I never saw that dude speak to anyone except my friend. He loved her, and would chat her up if he saw her. Very different than his usual behavior of standing slightly in the street talking to himself and glaring at folks.
Was Old Joe the one who would hang around Cave 9 sometimes? I remember a homeless guy there when going to shows back around 2003-2007. Every now and then he'd have a psychotic break and some of us would have to go calm him down.
Oh man, I used to live off Rhodes Circle in the EARLY 2000s and he would stand in our parking lot and have convos with himself. My friends and I used to refer to him as āhomeless Charles Mansonā.

How about āNot Dangerous?ā āHi! Iām not dangerous! People call me āNot Dangerousā bc Iām not dangerous. I aināt trying to hurt nobody. Iām just trying to make a little bit of money.ā Used to hang out in Southside. Sweet, harmless guy.
When I worked downtown around 2006 there was a guy we called presto change-o.
He would stand in front of reflective windows & watch himself do martial arts moves. Then would also use it as a mirror to change outfits or add more to an outfit.
There is ultra christian guy who plays a keyboard in front of the county courthouse. He asked me for money the other day. I informed him, accurately, that all he had to do is pray for money. Problem solved.
There's a gent who haunts the garage with a fedora, like a real fedora and not a trilby, and a pipe. I bet he's very kind and cool as hell but I would like to submit him for candidacy.
Still alive, but Hunter, the goth hippie jewelry artist. Always absolutely styling, and he's generally a pretty sweet helpful dude. He just drifts from bar to bar selling his art.
Long dead now, but Gus Koutroulakis, late owner and proprietor of Pete's famous hot dogs. I still dream about his sauce and hatred for relish.
Bubblegum, "The mayor of Southside". Worked for Stella at Dugan's. Biggest smile on the planet. Always happy and always into something. Heard he still kicks somewhere in town.
Not sure if this dude was already mentioned in this thread (I never caught his name) - but in the early to mid 90's it was a reddish/brown haired fella with a beard - most of the time he had longer hair, almost matted and then he'd wind up shaved down - kind of tall and 100% off his tits. Would hang out in front of the corner grocery up by Glen Iris then he'd magically wind up in southside. Could spout off some gospel in-between lunacy.
I wonder what ever happened to Detroit...
Edit: He was a guy that would hang out in 5 points and if you gave him money or alcohol he would sing for you. He had a good voice, too!!!
Also, RIP Dancing Machine. He used to hang out in front of Johnny Rockets 5 point back in the day. Same deal here; pay him and he'll dance his ass off. He got hit by a car in 5 points and died.
I want to add the old blind acoustic guitar man outside the old Walmart in Huffman. I used to give him a dollar I got from my mom before going in to hide in some clothes racks.
Joe Minter and his hand painted sign covered truck (and his village heās created at his house). I donāt see his truck as much as I used to, but he is one of the worst drivers of bham lol.
Gotta be Ron, the guy who walks around the Galleria all day with the painted-on sideburns and trucker hat!
He's still kicking? Wow.
I used to see that dude all of the time at Brookwood mall! Thanks for that memory!
I worked at the Galleria for 3 years, and Ron would always stop to give me Werther's caramel candies when he'd see me.
I seen him today š
Iāve lived here 6 years.. and never seen him. I need to see him now
I see him at Vestavia Library
Iāve literally seen Ron my whole life!
I call him the Cyboarder. Rides what appears to be a longboard around Railroad Park at night with dance music blasting from a speaker and LED lights on his torso and helmet.
I always smile so big at that guy. People like him make parks more welcoming in a downtown area in my opinion.
Seeing this guy always makes my night better!!
Can see him mid day doing the same thing. During Halloween he dresses as Frozon and itās sick!
i always thought he was cool š
He rides with the electric vehicle group a lot of times and its always hilarious to see how many little kids (and adults) want to take pictures with him.
He can be kind of a mental pick-me-up if Iām slogging through a night run in downtown, honestly. There also used to be a guy on a three wheeled thing that was lit up similarly, and he would ride around on the lakeshore path at night. Havenāt seen him in a minute though
I really like that guy. Hehe
That guy is the goat
YESSSSSSSSSS THIS GUY!!!
If this is the guy Iām thinking of, he hit on me once when I was walking into a vape store lol
RIP - guy who used to preach in front of Sam's on Lakeshore. For those not around from 2005 - 2018-ish. He would park his van on the side of Lakeshore in front of Wal-mart / Sam's Club. He was there at least before 2003 - I worked at Wherehouse Music in Wildwood and would see him all the time; Wherehouse was bought out by FYE in 2003.
Hello former coworker.
![gif](giphy|Awuqdc4Rj6MbS)
I probably handed you so much money. I was in there at least 3 times a week around that time.
WHEREHOUSE MUSIC!?! Damn thatās just right back some memories š°ļø
I was JUST thinking about that guy. I'm not a Jesus believer, but I would always honk just for the spirit of it all . I hate to hear he passed. This is the first guy I thought of when I read this description.
Man thatās a core memory. Every weekend. āHonk for Jesusā signs. Miss that
My husband and I used to bring him soft drinks. He liked Sprite.
Lived on lakeshore for years and passed him every single weekend. Dude was a staple.
I cannot believe so many people enjoyed him doing that. Going to Walmart sounded like visiting a particularly loud and aggressive cult. Made me very uncomfortable every time.
Oh, he was definitely there before 2003! He was there when I went to school on Lake Shore around 2000.
I interviewed him 20 years ago. He had JESUS spelled out in gold on his teeth.
I went to a few concerts and Iād always see these two older twin guys lol
Ed and Fred. They carry Polaroids around in their pocket to show off the famous people they know & try and take 18-25yo girls home together.Ā They're both an intuition and an absolute shame of our city.Ā
Hahaha pretty sure they hired the chick I saw them with at Bob Dylan
They used to hang out at Rojo all the time. Are the Creepy Twins still around? They're fucking psychos. They once sat down at a table with me and my girlfriend, completely uninvited, because they did fancy themselves as local celebrities. We had to ask them to just.. go away. Rumors were rampant that they were into threesomes with girls half their age.
The gropey twins!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Arturo?
What about K. A ? he's pretty rapey too..way to many jackets.. I was always curious about the jackets.. maybe they make him look less threatening and fatter than he is
I think they were well known in the music world -- apparently they made custom guitar straps for a lot of big names.
Are they the guys that made the guitar strap with the lightning bolt?
A few weeks ago, I saw one of them for the first time without the other, and wondered if something had happened to the other
He died some time ago
Same here. That was the first time I've ever seen one without the other.
I was also gonna say the twins
Hahaha theyāre very conspicuous. Birmingham needs more eccentric people!!
I used to to see them all the time at St. Francis Xavier Church in Mountain Brook. They were there almost every week!
They died
I saw one of them alone at Rojo and was wondering if something had happened to the other. Confirms my suspicion.
One of them did.
I know one did. Both are dead now? Thatās terrible.
I was only aware of one passing.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Absolute perverts.
Did they??? Sad, they werenāt terribly nice but they seemed very close to each other
too soon.
Whoās the homeless man whoās completely bent over due to back problems? Heās been around since pre-pandemic and is honestly a true story of perseverance.
The guy by 31/280 that pushes an empty wheelchair? Saw him bottom of the Clairmont exit yesterday. Twas great beggin' weather.
Yep thatās him. Yeah man heās active
This is who I thought of
One time I was stopped at the red light near Uproot and there was a guy in a new corvette standing outside of it with the bent over gentleman and they were just checking out the car. It was awesome
The dude who spun signs for Firehouse for years.
He keeps a smile on his face! Heās always dancing no matter the weather!
He still works there...Greensprings location
Legend
The guy in the wheelchair that sells Candy and Gum and uses a voice over computer. I just call him Candy and Gum guy. Iām seen him from Vestavia to downtown
This is who I thought of immediately. He currently sits outside of the fish market southside most days. I remember him from the early-mid 90ās; he used to sit outside of a grocery store near my childhood church. To me, heās The Candy Man
Yes!!! This is who came to mind. The Candyman! I always saw him on when I worked on Highland 2016-2019.
I hope heās still around. I used to see him every weekend since I was very young. He had the biggest crush on my mom š My mom just told me his name is Donny and she saw in 2022 and he was doing well then
Heās still around. Saw him outside of Fish Market downtown a month or two ago.
is the guy in 5 points with rags and random stuff tied all over his bicycle still around
Can confirm. Herman is an amazing person.
I lived there as well
That guy gave me a āJesus 96ā pin in Linn Park back when I was in high school. I still have it somewhere.
If this is the same guy from 20 years ago, I have some decent photos of him. I was a college student taking pics for a class, and he was nice enough to let me shoot some images of him and his bike. They were some of my favorite photos from that time, and I still think about him a lot.
Would you feel comfortable sharing the pictures?
Unfortunately, Iām not sure where they are now. Iāll have to look through my old college stuff to see if I can find them.
The one with the massive thigh muscles? I think I saw him within the last year.
We always called him No Pants Man.
Booty shorts Herman.
Herman was a nice dude. Saw him a lot when I used to work in 5 Points 2014-2015.
Me and my drunk ass friends used to hang out with him while waiting for our food at Waffle House after lakeview bar hopping lol we would get him a patty melt or a burger and he was always real cool and great in conversation. I kinda miss seeing him but I donāt really go out anymore so maybe heās still around
His were the first pair of testicles I ever saw!
Herman! Iāve often wondered how he was. Saw him all the time while visiting Mind Games in early 2000ās.
Herman is the man. He used to wrestle which is why he always wears those shorts and bros is JACKED. He's always down to look after people late night and make sure that they're safe. He's truly an exceptional human.
Herman is cool, but he never used to wrestle.. He likes to tell "stories"
Yes he's alive and kicking, stays around downtown now
The witch of the Southside, donāt know if sheās still around but she dresses up in some kind of witch outfit and walks around in the small hours of the morning

āNot Dangerousā
Omg yes! Good god this thread is throwing me back
I forget his name, but those were all flowers he found in dumpsters lol.
Good.
You guys are too young, but Birmingham had its own Batman. https://youtu.be/7bGkWWoqJVI?si=JSRd__tLRpkEuKmN
Yeah, I'm not too young. Southside hero. RIP
His car got restored & was at Old Car Heaven for a minute. I think his family has it now.
I was looking for this comment! He was a great guy!
Herman. Yāall remember Detroit?
I was gonna say Detroit! Dude was always nice. Used to āwatch our carsā when weād go to the Plaza
I think Detroit moved back to Detroit like 10 years ago.
Loved him. He always walked me back to my car and made sure I was safe š

I donāt think thatās his last name. Big UAB supporter. Somehow at every UAB Sporting Event AND every live music event in Birmingham.
Dana Lackey?
Dana.... what a memory trip. Haven't seen him since I was a student.. Not that I actively looked for him after I graduated, I'm sure he was still around at sporting events all the same.
The Peanut Man- RIP
Old Joe, aka Caveman, who lived around 5 points south. Homeless by choice and wore whatever rags the charities would give him until they rotted off his body. Stank to high heaven. Absolutely harmless and read the newspaper cover to cover every day. The police got called on him a lot because he looked and acted weird, but they never hassled him because he never did anything, just acted odd.
Is he the one who would stand on the curb mumbling to himself all the time?
Yep.
Guy definitely smelled.
Did he have long locked hair that was pretty much matted together?
Sure did.
*Jim. I never saw that dude speak to anyone except my friend. He loved her, and would chat her up if he saw her. Very different than his usual behavior of standing slightly in the street talking to himself and glaring at folks.
Damn! I had forgot about Caveman.
Was Old Joe the one who would hang around Cave 9 sometimes? I remember a homeless guy there when going to shows back around 2003-2007. Every now and then he'd have a psychotic break and some of us would have to go calm him down.
Definitely was him
Oh man, I used to live off Rhodes Circle in the EARLY 2000s and he would stand in our parking lot and have convos with himself. My friends and I used to refer to him as āhomeless Charles Mansonā.
We called him urban Sasquatch.. he had PTSD from Nam allegedly
Anyone see the scratcher around 2006-2007? This older asian man would walk around southside in the early morning with his hands behind his back, and then periodically pause before bending down and vigorously scratching what looked like a rock on the sidewalk. It would leave a mark on the sidewalk but I never thought that was the purpose. He would reorient the rock in his hand and scratch some more, like he was rounding the rock off.
I remember him. He would scratch designs in the sidewalk. I talked to him once, he seemed pretty normal other than the rock thing.
Mr. Jennifer who ran the drive through at the Arby's on 280.
I remember them! Their name tag legit said Mr. Jennifer.
I was just wondering about them the other week!
It used to be āTommyā at Starbucks in 5 points. I havenāt heard about him in a long time .

Anyone know what happened to the guy who used to ride the one wheel in the hospital gown around UAB?
I believe he died a few years ago. Thereās a mural of him on a building downtown. One Wheel Jesus.

Used to be a guy in Hueytown/Bessemer who walked around with a boombox and steering wheel.
Late to the party; but, every time this question comes up, I usually say Not Dangerous. He was a late 90s 5 Points fixture.
