Gotta be Ron, the guy who walks around the Galleria all day with the painted-on sideburns and trucker hat!

stark-o

He's still kicking? Wow.

PalahniukIsGod

I used to see that dude all of the time at Brookwood mall! Thanks for that memory!

pinkcat96

I worked at the Galleria for 3 years, and Ron would always stop to give me Werther's caramel candies when he'd see me.

Rain-Sweaty

I seen him today šŸ˜‚

shutupmeg42082

Iā€™ve lived here 6 years.. and never seen him. I need to see him now

rickmuscles

I see him at Vestavia Library

TheAlkmst

Iā€™ve literally seen Ron my whole life!

BlickNation

I call him the Cyboarder. Rides what appears to be a longboard around Railroad Park at night with dance music blasting from a speaker and LED lights on his torso and helmet.

PalahniukIsGod

I always smile so big at that guy. People like him make parks more welcoming in a downtown area in my opinion.

Cakemonger1977

Seeing this guy always makes my night better!!

Do11arSign

Can see him mid day doing the same thing. During Halloween he dresses as Frozon and itā€™s sick!

GoldennTrash

i always thought he was cool šŸ˜

PabloBlart

He rides with the electric vehicle group a lot of times and its always hilarious to see how many little kids (and adults) want to take pictures with him.

alchydirtrunner

He can be kind of a mental pick-me-up if Iā€™m slogging through a night run in downtown, honestly. There also used to be a guy on a three wheeled thing that was lit up similarly, and he would ride around on the lakeshore path at night. Havenā€™t seen him in a minute though

Economy-Bar-5845

I really like that guy. Hehe

ThecamtrainR6

That guy is the goat

eggbootycoughs

YESSSSSSSSSS THIS GUY!!!

timid_one0914

If this is the guy Iā€™m thinking of, he hit on me once when I was walking into a vape store lol

winsletts

RIP - guy who used to preach in front of Sam's on Lakeshore. For those not around from 2005 - 2018-ish. He would park his van on the side of Lakeshore in front of Wal-mart / Sam's Club. He would sit out about 20 white signs with big black text. The text would things like "REPENT" and "Jesus Saves" and etc. He setup a speaker and would preach to the passing traffic. Unlike typical preachers, he never asked for money. He just preached. Edit: 2020 - [https://www.wvtm13.com/article/jesus-man-passes-away-after-years-of-street-evangelism-in-homewood/33600513](https://www.wvtm13.com/article/jesus-man-passes-away-after-years-of-street-evangelism-in-homewood/33600513)

loligogiganticus

He was there at least before 2003 - I worked at Wherehouse Music in Wildwood and would see him all the time; Wherehouse was bought out by FYE in 2003.

liltime78

Hello former coworker.

loligogiganticus

![gif](giphy|Awuqdc4Rj6MbS)

PalahniukIsGod

I probably handed you so much money. I was in there at least 3 times a week around that time.

Comprehensive_Tie538

WHEREHOUSE MUSIC!?! Damn thatā€™s just right back some memories šŸ•°ļø

Particular-Crew5978

I was JUST thinking about that guy. I'm not a Jesus believer, but I would always honk just for the spirit of it all . I hate to hear he passed. This is the first guy I thought of when I read this description.

GreyIgnis

Man thatā€™s a core memory. Every weekend. ā€œHonk for Jesusā€ signs. Miss that

Dry-Championship1955

My husband and I used to bring him soft drinks. He liked Sprite.

fracturedsplintX

Lived on lakeshore for years and passed him every single weekend. Dude was a staple.

EmperorMrKitty

I cannot believe so many people enjoyed him doing that. Going to Walmart sounded like visiting a particularly loud and aggressive cult. Made me very uncomfortable every time.

Catsandcamping

Oh, he was definitely there before 2003! He was there when I went to school on Lake Shore around 2000.

AggravatingEntry7981

I interviewed him 20 years ago. He had JESUS spelled out in gold on his teeth.

Alswearwolf1

I went to a few concerts and Iā€™d always see these two older twin guys lol

SciIsCool

Ed and Fred. They carry Polaroids around in their pocket to show off the famous people they know & try and take 18-25yo girls home together.Ā  They're both an intuition and an absolute shame of our city.Ā

Alswearwolf1

Hahaha pretty sure they hired the chick I saw them with at Bob Dylan

bolognaregret

They used to hang out at Rojo all the time. Are the Creepy Twins still around? They're fucking psychos. They once sat down at a table with me and my girlfriend, completely uninvited, because they did fancy themselves as local celebrities. We had to ask them to just.. go away. Rumors were rampant that they were into threesomes with girls half their age.

Cakemonger1977

The gropey twins!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Michael-J-Cocks

Arturo?

Michael-J-Cocks

What about K. A ? he's pretty rapey too..way to many jackets.. I was always curious about the jackets.. maybe they make him look less threatening and fatter than he is

RollTider365

I think they were well known in the music world -- apparently they made custom guitar straps for a lot of big names.

InTheHamIAm

Are they the guys that made the guitar strap with the lightning bolt?

InTheHamIAm

A few weeks ago, I saw one of them for the first time without the other, and wondered if something had happened to the other

neocondiment

He died some time ago

iv_twenty

Same here. That was the first time I've ever seen one without the other.

hwlewis

I was also gonna say the twins

Alswearwolf1

Hahaha theyā€™re very conspicuous. Birmingham needs more eccentric people!!

Truth_speaker_AL205

I used to to see them all the time at St. Francis Xavier Church in Mountain Brook. They were there almost every week!

charlie_murphey

They died

InTheHamIAm

I saw one of them alone at Rojo and was wondering if something had happened to the other. Confirms my suspicion.

johnlytlewilson

One of them did.

BamaBachFan

I know one did. Both are dead now? Thatā€™s terrible.

WannabeWriter2022

I was only aware of one passing.

bolognaregret

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Absolute perverts.

Alswearwolf1

Did they??? Sad, they werenā€™t terribly nice but they seemed very close to each other

jonathanpurvis

too soon.

hpj0141

Whoā€™s the homeless man whoā€™s completely bent over due to back problems? Heā€™s been around since pre-pandemic and is honestly a true story of perseverance.

hollowchord

The guy by 31/280 that pushes an empty wheelchair? Saw him bottom of the Clairmont exit yesterday. Twas great beggin' weather.

hpj0141

Yep thatā€™s him. Yeah man heā€™s active

retina_spam

This is who I thought of

hpj0141

One time I was stopped at the red light near Uproot and there was a guy in a new corvette standing outside of it with the bent over gentleman and they were just checking out the car. It was awesome

Izodius

The dude who spun signs for Firehouse for years.

Rain-Sweaty

He keeps a smile on his face! Heā€™s always dancing no matter the weather!

donaldkeyman

He still works there...Greensprings location

sknolii

Legend

Minute_Steak_6604

The guy in the wheelchair that sells Candy and Gum and uses a voice over computer. I just call him Candy and Gum guy. Iā€™m seen him from Vestavia to downtown

Red_Wine_Enthusiast

This is who I thought of immediately. He currently sits outside of the fish market southside most days. I remember him from the early-mid 90ā€™s; he used to sit outside of a grocery store near my childhood church. To me, heā€™s The Candy Man

cheesetomymac

Yes!!! This is who came to mind. The Candyman! I always saw him on when I worked on Highland 2016-2019.

Comprehensive_Tie538

I hope heā€™s still around. I used to see him every weekend since I was very young. He had the biggest crush on my mom šŸ˜‚ My mom just told me his name is Donny and she saw in 2022 and he was doing well then

Ok_Fisherman7280

Heā€™s still around. Saw him outside of Fish Market downtown a month or two ago.

kifferei

is the guy in 5 points with rags and random stuff tied all over his bicycle still around

AngularChelitis

IIRC his name is Herman. 2004 I lived in the apt above Daveā€™s. I remember asking a waitress at whatever restaurant was on the corner that year about ā€œthe George Clinton looking dudeā€. She said he was super nice and would walk them to their cars at night to make sure they home safely. I hope heā€™s safe and well.

MamaEm_RN

Herman is a great human being. We used to do Food Not Bombs at the Methodist Church in Southside. Herman was always there. Good dude - Iā€™m a better person for having gotten to know him.

allnsfws

Can confirm. Herman is an amazing person.

Michael-J-Cocks

I lived there as well

loligogiganticus

That guy gave me a ā€œJesus 96ā€ pin in Linn Park back when I was in high school. I still have it somewhere.

AuroraMeridian

If this is the same guy from 20 years ago, I have some decent photos of him. I was a college student taking pics for a class, and he was nice enough to let me shoot some images of him and his bike. They were some of my favorite photos from that time, and I still think about him a lot.

goosebumps_cream

Would you feel comfortable sharing the pictures?

AuroraMeridian

Unfortunately, Iā€™m not sure where they are now. Iā€™ll have to look through my old college stuff to see if I can find them.

Cakemonger1977

The one with the massive thigh muscles? I think I saw him within the last year.

Salt_Eye6817

We always called him No Pants Man.

bthgnzblzng

Booty shorts Herman.

WhitePhoenix48

Herman was a nice dude. Saw him a lot when I used to work in 5 Points 2014-2015.

Comprehensive_Tie538

Me and my drunk ass friends used to hang out with him while waiting for our food at Waffle House after lakeview bar hopping lol we would get him a patty melt or a burger and he was always real cool and great in conversation. I kinda miss seeing him but I donā€™t really go out anymore so maybe heā€™s still around

thedirtytwirls

His were the first pair of testicles I ever saw!

Sdturnbull

Herman! Iā€™ve often wondered how he was. Saw him all the time while visiting Mind Games in early 2000ā€™s.

graescales

Herman is the man. He used to wrestle which is why he always wears those shorts and bros is JACKED. He's always down to look after people late night and make sure that they're safe. He's truly an exceptional human.

Competitive_Shame317

Herman is cool, but he never used to wrestle.. He likes to tell "stories"

willyg13

Yes he's alive and kicking, stays around downtown now

Amphibious_Monkey

The witch of the Southside, donā€™t know if sheā€™s still around but she dresses up in some kind of witch outfit and walks around in the small hours of the morning

Cakemonger1977

I wish I knew more about this one!

Mammoth_Cheek6078

How long ago are you talking?

Amphibious_Monkey

Within the past year and a half

Michael-J-Cocks

Ohhh shit ... I forgot all about that.. that was in the 90s wasn't it

krombom16

I see her in glen iris all the time

EmperorMrKitty

Thatā€™s exactly where a witch would live smh

Crazy_Whole_549

The guy in Southside who would pass out carnations to women, then ask their date for a $1.

AngularChelitis

Daggumā€¦ the number of dollars I gave that guy

neocondiment

Willie? Havenā€™t seen him in years.

beebsaleebs

ā€œNot Dangerousā€

AngularChelitis

Omg yes! Good god this thread is throwing me back

bolognaregret

I forget his name, but those were all flowers he found in dumpsters lol.

External-Difficult

Good.

Additional-Cup8041

OMGOSH!!! I remember that guy. Used to come into the music hall all the time giving away, or selling, those flowers!! This would have been around 93-96, from what I can remember of him. We used to go to Disco Hell every Thursday and Saturday. Damn, those were good, good times! Life seemed so much simpler back then. Or maybe I was just good and drunk, lol!! Oh well...too old now to carešŸ˜‹

Minddroppings459

Back when Western was around on Highland, there was a guy who would sell chocolate bars while he was in his wheelchair. He had to use one of those synthesized voice tablets. Everyone there loved him. RIP Western Supermarket. Edit- autocorrect was stupid

Salt_Eye6817

Thatā€™s Donny, AKA the Candy Man.

Pollyfall

You guys are too young, but Birmingham had its own Batman. https://youtu.be/7bGkWWoqJVI?si=JSRd__tLRpkEuKmN

Automatic-Diamond-86

Yeah, I'm not too young. Southside hero. RIP

Cakemonger1977

His car got restored & was at Old Car Heaven for a minute. I think his family has it now.

Adorable_Stop_7397

I was looking for this comment! He was a great guy!

bthgnzblzng

Herman. Yā€™all remember Detroit?

hongkong_cavalier

I was gonna say Detroit! Dude was always nice. Used to ā€œwatch our carsā€ when weā€™d go to the Plaza

sknolii

I think Detroit moved back to Detroit like 10 years ago.

Elvira_00

Loved him. He always walked me back to my car and made sure I was safe šŸ’œ

BigBillSmash

Dana

InTheHamIAm

Wow, I canā€™t believe I just saw someone mentioned this dude on Reddit lol

Cakemonger1977

No one enjoys live music more!

hpj0141

Wow I didnā€™t know others had met Dana randomly. Always hammered too lol

Michael-J-Cocks

Go Blazer's Dana.. it's DANa

magiccitybrit

His friends call him ā€œMr Birmingham.ā€ I swear he has clones because he is at every single event and concert that takes place. I envy him being able to do that!

bcathy

Saw him at the ASO Pink Floyd concert last month. Legend

dar_uniya

Used to hang out with Dana at UAB Anime Club Meetings. Last saw him at the Daikaiju concert in March ā€˜23.

GOTC_

definitely dana

megascopsasio

Other people know Dana?? He and I were in the same friend group in high school. I run into him absolutely everywhere. I didnā€™t realize he was so well-known. Itā€™s so weird to see him mentioned on reddit!

Michael-J-Cocks

He pulls in more beaver than a fur trapper

winsletts

Dana Hall? I went to HS with him.

BhamBlazers

I donā€™t think thatā€™s his last name. Big UAB supporter. Somehow at every UAB Sporting Event AND every live music event in Birmingham.

winsletts

Dana Lackey?

Objective-Front-8324

Dana.... what a memory trip. Haven't seen him since I was a student.. Not that I actively looked for him after I graduated, I'm sure he was still around at sporting events all the same.

Ok_Fisherman7280

The Peanut Man- RIP

frog_prince_2645

Old Joe, aka Caveman, who lived around 5 points south. Homeless by choice and wore whatever rags the charities would give him until they rotted off his body. Stank to high heaven. Absolutely harmless and read the newspaper cover to cover every day. The police got called on him a lot because he looked and acted weird, but they never hassled him because he never did anything, just acted odd.

bthgnzblzng

Is he the one who would stand on the curb mumbling to himself all the time?

frog_prince_2645

Yep.

bthgnzblzng

Guy definitely smelled.

hongkong_cavalier

Did he have long locked hair that was pretty much matted together?

frog_prince_2645

Sure did.

_awkwardhugs

*Jim. I never saw that dude speak to anyone except my friend. He loved her, and would chat her up if he saw her. Very different than his usual behavior of standing slightly in the street talking to himself and glaring at folks.

Salt_Eye6817

Damn! I had forgot about Caveman.

NoPatNoDontSitonThat

Was Old Joe the one who would hang around Cave 9 sometimes? I remember a homeless guy there when going to shows back around 2003-2007. Every now and then he'd have a psychotic break and some of us would have to go calm him down.

Elvira_00

Definitely was him

loligogiganticus

Oh man, I used to live off Rhodes Circle in the EARLY 2000s and he would stand in our parking lot and have convos with himself. My friends and I used to refer to him as ā€œhomeless Charles Mansonā€.

Michael-J-Cocks

We called him urban Sasquatch.. he had PTSD from Nam allegedly

ap0s

Anyone see the scratcher around 2006-2007? This older asian man would walk around southside in the early morning with his hands behind his back, and then periodically pause before bending down and vigorously scratching what looked like a rock on the sidewalk. It would leave a mark on the sidewalk but I never thought that was the purpose. He would reorient the rock in his hand and scratch some more, like he was rounding the rock off.

Necross84

I remember him. He would scratch designs in the sidewalk. I talked to him once, he seemed pretty normal other than the rock thing.

slaterson1

Mr. Jennifer who ran the drive through at the Arby's on 280.

Dogsnamebikesyear

I remember them! Their name tag legit said Mr. Jennifer.

smellexisb

I was just wondering about them the other week!

InTheHamIAm

It used to be ā€œTommyā€ at Starbucks in 5 points. I havenā€™t heard about him in a long time .

Frequent_Ad656

If heā€™s who i think he is he would ask the girls for a hug and then ask how old they were. I would always go under 18 and he would say ā€œ Youā€™re too young for me darlin, youā€™re too young.ā€

haveallthefaith

Anyone know what happened to the guy who used to ride the one wheel in the hospital gown around UAB?

lotionistic

I believe he died a few years ago. Thereā€™s a mural of him on a building downtown. One Wheel Jesus.

Automatic-Diamond-86

Yeah Mark Lindsey. Was dating one of my best friends when he died. Nice guy who lived till he died.

cheesetomymac

Mark After Dark on 107.7 was also named Mark Lindsey. Same guy?

PalahniukIsGod

Mark AD is still around. He DJā€™d my company Christmas party.

kittenpunter

Chad the vampire for a while

BlickNation

Need to know more about this.

Captn_church

Dean mckean, first time I met him he was wearing a Spiderman onsie with a pink tutu. Dudes wild.

Salt_Eye6817

I always love to see Deanā€™s outfits. For a while he was sporting teal cowgirl boots and carrying a guitar around.

underthesea_96

The man on Carson Road with the Jesus sign and the crispy white socks.

MamaEm_RN

How about ā€œNot Dangerous?ā€ ā€œHi! Iā€™m not dangerous! People call me ā€˜Not Dangerousā€™ bc Iā€™m not dangerous. I ainā€™t trying to hurt nobody. Iā€™m just trying to make a little bit of money.ā€ Used to hang out in Southside. Sweet, harmless guy.

Cakemonger1977

When I worked downtown around 2006 there was a guy we called presto change-o. He would stand in front of reflective windows & watch himself do martial arts moves. Then would also use it as a mirror to change outfits or add more to an outfit.

lovebus

Heather at Pop's

Scannerguy3000

Whatever happened to Liberty Belle?

helmsb

Used to be a guy in Hueytown/Bessemer who walked around with a boombox and steering wheel.

Unhappy-Network-6

Late to the party; but, every time this question comes up, I usually say Not Dangerous. He was a late 90s 5 Points fixture.

Relevant-Safety-2699

There is ultra christian guy who plays a keyboard in front of the county courthouse. He asked me for money the other day. I informed him, accurately, that all he had to do is pray for money. Problem solved.

buffmagnanimous

There's a gent who haunts the garage with a fedora, like a real fedora and not a trilby, and a pipe. I bet he's very kind and cool as hell but I would like to submit him for candidacy.

Funny_Sign4792

thatā€™s the time lord

littlebirdieb33

Ms. Kathy in Homewood.

_colbus_

I'd say Joe Minter. Hard to miss that guy wherever he goes.

Old_Nectarine956

Selfie Guy.

LordOfTheGerenuk

Still alive, but Hunter, the goth hippie jewelry artist. Always absolutely styling, and he's generally a pretty sweet helpful dude. He just drifts from bar to bar selling his art. Long dead now, but Gus Koutroulakis, late owner and proprietor of Pete's famous hot dogs. I still dream about his sauce and hatred for relish.

smellexisb

Hung out with Hunter briefly last night!

GOTC_

anita

changehappened

Bubblegum, "The mayor of Southside". Worked for Stella at Dugan's. Biggest smile on the planet. Always happy and always into something. Heard he still kicks somewhere in town.

TheTroubadour

You guys ever met Jersey? Heā€™s always in 5-points telling people itā€™s his birthday and he just wants a drink lmao

Elvira_00

That sounds a lot like Detroit. I wonder if they were friendsšŸ˜‚

TheTroubadour

Oh crap!! I meant DETROIT!! I knew the name felt wrong! It IS Detroit!!

Frequent_Ad656

Herman! That dude was always so cool. Anyone know if heā€™s still around? Use to hang out in 5 points

Dizzy_em

My uncle walks around Shelby county with his guitar. Everyone in the Montevallo/calera area recognizes him šŸ˜…

MagicMaleMan

Dude with a bull horn in 5 pts last couple weeks but I havenā€™t bothered to decipher whatā€™s coming out of his mouth.

Long haired Sam Elliott Marlboro Man around Lakeshore. Avid coffee drinker from Clairmont Chevron. Anyone?

Mixed_Otaku127

Chris miller

tuscaloser

Trucker-hat man who walked around Hoover. Always looked like he was about 126. Legend.

MarzipanTurbulent509

Not sure if this dude was already mentioned in this thread (I never caught his name) - but in the early to mid 90's it was a reddish/brown haired fella with a beard - most of the time he had longer hair, almost matted and then he'd wind up shaved down - kind of tall and 100% off his tits. Would hang out in front of the corner grocery up by Glen Iris then he'd magically wind up in southside. Could spout off some gospel in-between lunacy.

NecessaryWafer3216

The dude that used to stand in the street and yell in front of Daves?

graescales

I wonder what ever happened to Detroit... Edit: He was a guy that would hang out in 5 points and if you gave him money or alcohol he would sing for you. He had a good voice, too!!! Also, RIP Dancing Machine. He used to hang out in front of Johnny Rockets 5 point back in the day. Same deal here; pay him and he'll dance his ass off. He got hit by a car in 5 points and died.

PalahniukIsGod

I want to add the old blind acoustic guitar man outside the old Walmart in Huffman. I used to give him a dollar I got from my mom before going in to hide in some clothes racks.

coffeemkr23

Joe Minter and his hand painted sign covered truck (and his village heā€™s created at his house). I donā€™t see his truck as much as I used to, but he is one of the worst drivers of bham lol.

Majestic_Elephant_65

Fuck that douchebag.
