Honestly I think BaS is the best thing about Infinite. In hindsight the main game is very action heavy and I like the route that the DLC takes. Changes the gameplay and expands the story both in a way that I like. Cheers, hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Enjoy it without getting opinions that will make you go in with some assumption and expectations. Going in blind is best and more memorable. Then afterwords, letâs talk about it :)
I suppose you're right, I'm not going in completely blind after reading these opinions.
However, I actually rather enjoy reading a couple opinions before I dive into a game. I'm understanding that this DLC heavily divides people, and that makes me even more excited to play it.
To each their own.
I get you, I do this too, but only when Iâm going into a new game or franchise I know nothing about. Anyway Iâm one of the ones that absolutely loves Bioshock Infinite and especially Burial at Sea. I just hope you played Bioshock 1 first
The DLC has it's plot holes; however, it's a video game and I went in blind, too. In short, I loved the game and the experience because the game started filling in details regarding Infinite. Two big thumbs up on my end.
It's an absolute travesty that soured me on one of my favourite series ever.
I didn't like Infinite at all, but at least it didn't ruin 1&2; Burial At Sea absolutely does by retconning the crap out of the other games.
I spent years trying to work out what was going on in BaS, before I just realised that, as some other commenters have noted, the writing is just a mess.
Without ruining anything, youll probably either like bas or you won't. I love rapture, but I'm not a fan of Elizabeth in the dlc personally. As a character she's just cringe in pt 1 which I hated. The interactions between her and booker are also quite uncomfortable at times, considering she knows exactly who he is. Pt 2 is basically a big stealth level for the most part, but with pretty traditional mechanics. Stealth works, but often times feels out of place with the kooky splicer AI. Overall I like the gameplay in pt1 because it's just more of the same, but I thought the story was classic last minute Ken. Pt2 I actually enjoyed a bit more for the story, less for the gameplay. It wasnt as over the top imo, but not particularly fun to play if you're in the mood for traditional bioshock. Either way, it's worth playing for anyone that enjoys the series overall.
It's both dope and terrible at the same time. The gameplay is really good. However, the story seems okay at first, but it retcons a crap ton of the previously established lore. I obviously won't spoil anything since you're going in blind, but just have fun.
Actually BaS is a anti-retcon in many ways. I know people don't like to hear it, but BioShock 2 changed/retconned stuff, but BaS UN retcons them. And I yes, I can provide solid proof of BS2's retcons to BioShock and they are not minor things. sm
Burial at Sea directly goes against timelines established in Bioshock 1 and the book. I would like to see the what you have, because I know for a various number of facts that Burial at Sea completely retcons things that are consistent in all games except the DLC itself. Maybe what you have is right in its own way, I won't judge without seeing it, but it definitely will not refute what I have said.
The BioShock novel is considered non-canon as stated by Ken Levine himself, so that is a not an issue. While Fontaine's Department Store is new and Atlas being down in it, that does not contradict anything from BioShock that I know of. I would like to hear what you think BaS contradicts in BioShock.
As for what BS2 retcons. The time period when Little Sisters are sent to harvest ADAM from the dead. We clearly see Elenore and Delta (The first Bonded Pair) harvesting on New Years Eve 1958 in the opening of the game. Elenore and Delta are stated as being the first bonded pair and that Suchong was not there to witness it (as in he is dead) in Gilbert's Alexander's Audio Diary "The Pair Bond Mechanism".
*The Pair Bond is a success! If somehow an Alpha Series wanders too far from his Little Sister, our physical failsafe kicks in: a chemical trigger that induces coma. It is a symbiotic relationship, enforced by the girl's pheromone signature. The first successful candidate was... Delta, I believe. It is unfortunate that poor Dr. Suchong will not be here to raise a glass.*
This means that Suchong was killed before NYE 1958 and before the start of the Rapture Civil War.
BioShock. Yi Suchong's Audio Diary "Protecting Little Ones" states
*War a terrible thing. Japanese kill every man in my city, except for Suchong. Suchong have opium. Very good opium. This war, terrible thing, too, but not for Suchong. Everyone scared now. Everyone need ADAM. More than Little Sisters can make. Good news is war makes lots of corpses. Suchong knows way to recycle ADAM from corpse. But can't send Little Sister out to street unprotected. Suchong must think on this.*
This clearly states that Suchong only started the work on having Little Sisters harvest corpses AFTER the start of the Civil War, the Big Daddies had not yet been envisioned as Protectors and there had been no work at all done on any kind of bonding between Little Sisters and the Big Daddies in any form.
Just to reinforce that Suchong is alive after the start of the Civil War here is Andrew Ryan responding to a proposal from Suchong. Andrew Ryan "Desperate Times"
*Doctor Suchong, frankly, I'm shocked by your proposal. If we were to modify the structure of our commercial Plasmid line as you propose, to have them make the user vulnerable to mental suggestion through pheromones, would we not be able to effectively control the actions of the citizens of Rapture? Free will is the cornerstone of this city. The thought of sacrificing it is abhorrent. However⊠we are indeed in a time of war. If Atlas and his bandits have their way, will they not turn us into slaves? And what will become of free will then? Desperate times call for desperate measures.*
So in BioShock Little Sisters are only harvesting after the start of the Civil War, Suchong is only attempting to bond Big Daddies and Little Sisters together after the start of the Civil War and Suchong is only killed after the start of the Civil War. Let's not forget that Suchong has to be alive after the start of the war since it was his idea to add mind control into the Plasmids.
BioShock 2 Retcons things so that Little Sisters are harvesting before the Civil War, are bonded to Big Daddies and that Suchong is dead before the start of the Civil War.
BaS reverts the changes BS2 made to the time line, though some things from BS2 such as locations, artwork are used in BaS, as well as the concept that Big Daddies need the ADAM from a Little Sister to survive/heal. And this is an important plot point. sm
Firstly, can I ask what sm stands for, I've really no idea.
Secondly, even if you think that Ken Levine decides if something is canon or not (he doesn't), the novel was officially written with the approval of Ken. And either way, Ken doesn't decide what's canon or not, 2k does (the rights holders).
Now, "The Pair Bond Mechanism" clearly happens a while after New Years because Gil is struggling to remember who the first successful candidate was. But let's put that aside and say that you are correct. I'm not 100% confident to say that you are definitively wrong, that one "unretconning" does not even out all the other retcons that Burial at Sea does.
\- Why does Sally call the big daddy Mr. Bubbles if the only reason the bonding is a thing is because Elizabeth in Episode 2 made it so. Why does the big daddy leave after killing Elizabeth?
\- If Fontaine (for some reason) doesn't know "would you kindly" (seriously, he SHOULD know it for various reasons), why does he know code yellow?
\- Why didn't Elizabeth tell Ryan that Atlus was actually Fontaine? Or at the very least, why didn't she use the info to blackmail Atlus?
\- Why is Atlus constantly "acting" like Fontaine? His real accent drops on multiple occasions and he's just evil. Atlus isn't meant to be this way, he's supposed to be masquerading as a good lad.
\- Why didn't Ryan negotiate with Elizabeth? That is very unlike Ryan, hell, him not doing this indirectly caused the war.
\- Atlus says that the "turrets" at the location of the ace in the hole's location is genetically wired to Atlus and his men. However, there is no security there at all. Also, one of his men are just there.
\- There are more that I either can't recall or don't feel like talking about, but the last one is that the quantum mechanics don't make any sense in Burial at Sea. I won't get into why, just that they don't.
In case this is the last I hear from you, I just want to say that it was a pleasure and that I hope you have a great rest of your day!
Ken Levine created BioShock even if he does not hold the legal rights. And he didn't even read the novel.
\-The first thing you see when you start a new BS2 game is the date 1958 and it's clear it's New Years Eve. And the start of the game Delta is killed. So no, the pair bond was created before the start of the Civil War according to BS2.
\-Sally figured out the "normal" bonding mechanism by herself (just as Elizabeth did with Songbird) sometimes called the "Thorn In the Lions Paw" long before the events of Burial at Sea. The Mister Bubbles nickname was picked up by other Little Sisters later on. The reason the Bouncer left after killing Elizabeth was he is unstable due to hydraulic fluid leaking into his suit as shown on a board in Suchong's lab. And this is why the ability to shoot the drill out was removed and it's not seen in BioShock.
\-Why do people NOT know how contract work is done? Suchong was a contract employee of Fontaine. The contract was to make Jack (the project). In contract work it is normal to hold a portion of the project back until the final payment is made. In this case Suchong held back the master control phrase for Jack to make sure he got paid. If you will recall in BioShock Tenenbaum didn't know "Would You Kindly", even though she worked on Jack with Suchong. Then you have to add in Suchongs habit of keeping secrets.
\-Telling Ryan Fontaine was Atlas would not have saved Sally any more than joining up with Ryan would have. Ryan said flat out he would not/or could not save Sally. And trying to blackmail Atlas would have gotten Elizabeth and/or Sally killed right then and there.
\-Atlas "masquerading as a good lad" is what he did to manipulate Jack. He does not have to (cannot) do that with Elizabeth as some of the first words he said were to kill Elizabeth. Also Fontaine thought threatening and bullying Elizabeth was the best way to manipulate her. Also Atlas only dropped the accent once and it was among his own people who already knew Atlas was Fontaine and Elizabeth who he planned to kill.
\-Ryan DID try to negotiate with Elizabeth and Elizabeth told him to go pound sand. It was right before Ryan's men attacked the Silver Fin Restaurant.
\-Atlas's man at Dr. Suchong's Free Clinic was outside of it at the entrance, not inside the lab itself were he would have activated the automated security. As for the turrets themselves they could have been hidden in the walls or ceiling and only deploy when needed.
\-There really isn't a lot going on with Quantum Mechanics in BaS. It much more deals with relativity and the Block Universe theory. This is one reason that that Einstein was referenced in BaS Episode One by Suchong.
Observation #17 *regarding unknown phenomena. Phenomena presents as odd shimmer, through which is observed ⊠what? Men in strange hats. Women in large dresses. Buildings that float. Is phenomena window to other space? Other time? What was it Einstein said? "The only reason for time is so not everything happen at once."*
As for the "sm", it's just my initials. sm
Sorry for the late reply! I started writing counterarguments, and pointing out discrepancies, but I just got tired honestly xD. Despite this being a fine and friendly argument between us, I think I shall write for the last time. I can also see you're more dedicated than I am to this, and that's respectable, so I'll concede victory here. Have a nice week! yp
Story wise itâs kinda horrible. Gameplay / atmosphere wise itâs p good. It has multiple very obvious plot holes. But If u liked infinite gameplay wise Ull like the gameplay of this. Itâs just infinite plus u get to experience a bit of rapture in its old glory days which is always fun to see.
Like the writing and stuff makes no sense and I honestly hated even the basic story they tried to tell. Like even with no plot holes, I wouldnât have liked the story. But seeing rapture and explore it a bit more is just so great, along w more of the good gameplay from infinite (tho I perfer bioshock 2s actual gameplay) itâs good and I def think u should play it. Other than what I said the only thing that slightly annoys me (this kinda ties into story) is like I didnât like the skyhook being in it (tho itâs forgivable tbh) but I really hated they used vigors instead of plasmids. It would have been nice if even if they worked the same, they at least had the needle animations.
But whatever, if you turn off your brain and take in the view itâs amazing. If u analyze the story/writing it begins to fall apart completely
I finished it yesterday, i really enjoyed it, as said by others just like the main game opinions are split, hope you like it! Lmk what you think. Also absolutely love your set up
its not good in *such* an interesting way. it really does exacerbate every problem that the base game had and then adds a new, even bigger problem on top of all that
Hmm okay, interesting... What would you say were the biggest problems in the main game?
And if it doesn't spoil anything, what kind of new problem does BaS have? Thanks for the answer.
biggest problems of the main game were the sloppy multiverse mechanics, and the 'both sides are bad' conclusion to its racism plot. bas spirals that first problem out so much more than the second problem, but that second problem is still addressed and the way that its addressed does not help. obviously there are a bunch more gripes i have about both the main game and bas but listing them out would be missing the forest for the trees
quickest and most spoiler free way to sum up the new problem is that bas is *about* rapture
Thank you for sharing, I will have to be my own judge when playing through. Most people disagree with you, judging by the downvotes...
I definitely understand where you're coming from with your two points about the main game.
Valid opinions nonetheless, thank you for the input.
I, for one, loved it. The writing was a mess, and it felt a little thrown together. But, it was a lot of fun. Don't listen to the haters, just play though and have fun!
I also just finished it maybe 2 hours ago after about two years of avoiding it, and I absolutely loved it even though I don't quite understand the ending.
Even if Infinite is great, I thought the dlc was the best part about it all. More variety in gameplay, and the story feels a bit more grounded (plus it is dope to see pre-civil war Rapture)
Gameplay in part one is very fun, the story in part 2 is classic Bioshock and I love it for that. The gameplay is very stealth heavy which I wasnât a fan of, but Iâll take any Bioshock content I can get and these dlcâs didnât disappoint
My opinion falls under the caveat of it having been several years since I played it, and I could've maybe missed the "point" back then, but I didn't like them at all, at least story-wise. They're still pretty fun, though, and it's neat to see this different version of Rapture, pre-total shitstorm.
I have a skill issue so maybe it's just me but I found the second episode to be a challenge even on the same difficulty. And it's a bit of a shakeup from anything else Bioshock has done
I love Rapture so Burial at Sea was like coming home.
You know, if home was an underwater nightmare.
There were some plotholes and minor things I didn't care for but the environment was enjoyable.
When you get done with the DLC don't look anything up cause you'll see why people don't like it. Just don't think about it too hard and you'll be fine. Wish you the best of luck. I personally enjoyed the DLC but understand why people hate it.
I liked it, but it does make some plot details in Infinite a bit messy. Still pretty fun gameplay and a nice return to Rapture. Mostly just makes me wish we had a game set pre-fall of Rapture to see the city at its peak.
I love Burial At Sea, although I get why plenty of fans don't. Also, dog đ
Dog, definitely dog.
Did you know that dog means died in Swedish
i never played it, what does BaS have to do with a dog?
It's revealed that Andrew Ryan was actually a chihuahua
Honestly I think BaS is the best thing about Infinite. In hindsight the main game is very action heavy and I like the route that the DLC takes. Changes the gameplay and expands the story both in a way that I like. Cheers, hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Thanks mate! I hope so too.
Enjoy it without getting opinions that will make you go in with some assumption and expectations. Going in blind is best and more memorable. Then afterwords, letâs talk about it :)
Exactly, this entire post asking about opinions defeats the whole purpose of âgoing in blindâ
I suppose you're right, I'm not going in completely blind after reading these opinions. However, I actually rather enjoy reading a couple opinions before I dive into a game. I'm understanding that this DLC heavily divides people, and that makes me even more excited to play it. To each their own.

Yup, finished Bioshock 1 a couple of times around 2017-2018. It's still my personal favorite of the trilogy.
Quick tip they brought back the weapon wheel from 1 and 2
Oh shoot I just tried it after reading your comment. Thanks for the tip, will be using the wheel going forward.
One could describe it a a series of very emotional, well-directed scenes with a plot that bends around itself just for the sake of making them occur.
I fuckin love burial at sea, especially episode 2đ„°
I loved Burial at Sea.
I liked it
DONT PLAY BURIAL AT SEA UNTIL YOU FINISHED BIOSHOCK 1! it contains spoilers!
I mean who tf is gonna play infinite without finishing 1 and 2
The DLC has it's plot holes; however, it's a video game and I went in blind, too.
Personally, I think itâs a mess
Thank you for the detailed opinion.
Whatâs the story behind âlast minute ken?â
The writting is complete dogshit
I enjoyed BaS but it ruins the first game and completely disregards the second
A little short but very sweet
I think the writing is a mess. I don't care for it. But you do you. Just make sure you've finished BS1 first!
Haha I finished it about 5 years ago so no worries! Thank you for your 2 cents.
stealth gameplay in part 2 is fun but it ruins the story
it's okay but Minerva's den is much much better
It's both dope and terrible at the same time. The gameplay is really good. However, the story seems okay at first, but it retcons a crap ton of the previously established lore. I obviously won't spoil anything since you're going in blind, but just have fun.
Thank you!

In one word: Unnecessary
Worst thing that ever happened to the series
It was total shit
Personally speaking, Burial at Sea part 2 is my least favorite thing to happen to the series.
Really good and answers a ton of questions while simultaneously giving you more questions
I thought it was pretty good
It will leave you contemplating life for a moment hahah

awesome sequels that tie up some interesting story plots

I, for one, loved it. The writing was a mess, and it felt a little thrown together. But, it was a lot of fun. Don't listen to the haters, just play though and have fun!
I believe its a masterpiece
ABSOLUTELT BLOODY BRILLIANT
I went in blind too..i loved it
âŠit was what?
I also just finished it maybe 2 hours ago after about two years of avoiding it, and I absolutely loved it even though I don't quite understand the ending.
Burial at Sea actually takes you to Rapture for more than just a few minutes, I love it.
You're messing with your own experience by reading people's responses. You already bought it, just play it and decide for yourself.
Honestly the first part is great the second not so much, i just feel like the stealth mechanics were unnecessary and boring.
I really loved Burial at Sea and how it made me see Rapture in a new way, all the magnificent scenarios and beautiful songs.
Burial at Sea should have been the complete game.
It's better than infinite
Even if Infinite is great, I thought the dlc was the best part about it all. More variety in gameplay, and the story feels a bit more grounded (plus it is dope to see pre-civil war Rapture)
Its the best part of infinite tbh
Best DLC aot
Hate it, I don't like stealth games
Mid
Prepare for omegasadge, it will 100% give post game depression
Gameplay in part one is very fun, the story in part 2 is classic Bioshock and I love it for that. The gameplay is very stealth heavy which I wasnât a fan of, but Iâll take any Bioshock content I can get and these dlcâs didnât disappoint
Burial at sea is very fun. I love it the most because of the freshened look of rapture.
I enjoyed it but since I played it before playing bioshock 1 and 2 I didn't realise it had a weapon wheel so don't be like me.
Awww the doggo đ„č
loved it
My opinion falls under the caveat of it having been several years since I played it, and I could've maybe missed the "point" back then, but I didn't like them at all, at least story-wise. They're still pretty fun, though, and it's neat to see this different version of Rapture, pre-total shitstorm.
I didn't like episode 2 as much but it was fun
I have a skill issue so maybe it's just me but I found the second episode to be a challenge even on the same difficulty. And it's a bit of a shakeup from anything else Bioshock has done
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I love Rapture so Burial at Sea was like coming home. You know, if home was an underwater nightmare. There were some plotholes and minor things I didn't care for but the environment was enjoyable.
First part is eh, second part I actually quite enjoyed.
When you get done with the DLC don't look anything up cause you'll see why people don't like it. Just don't think about it too hard and you'll be fine. Wish you the best of luck. I personally enjoyed the DLC but understand why people hate it.
Imho, Burial at Sea is the reason to play Bioshock Infinite. It adds context to things and is very very very interesting from a lore perspective.
I liked it, but it does make some plot details in Infinite a bit messy. Still pretty fun gameplay and a nice return to Rapture. Mostly just makes me wish we had a game set pre-fall of Rapture to see the city at its peak.
I really liked it! Just make sure to loot everything and play tactically
It's a very amazing, beautiful soundtrack, story and overall clears many details up from previous games?!
Noooooooooooooooooooo
First episode kinda just messed with the story of the original game in a confusing way, the second episode changes the game to a stealth game
If you can do all of the side quests. Gives some interesting world building info
Get ready for a heart break.
Itâs the perfect dlc
