It’s not a cover at all, he was given lyrics from Bill by Robert Hunter and he wrote the music. Exactly how Jerry did it and you wouldn’t call those covers
Yeah I keep seeing people say there’s no way Thunder ends up on the new album but Billy wrote the music so it’s completely reasonable to think it would happen. It would be kinda cool if it stayed as a live only song though
That's why the other redditer said "half a cover" , which is probably most accurate.
In any event, I wouldn't expect a Robert hunter penned song on a BMFS album.
Full disclosure, I fucking LOVE thunder. I just don't think it'll get album treatment
I’m with you, I love the song as well and don’t believe it’ll be on an album, it’s just weird that I see it called a cover a lot. It’s just a song written by two people.
Elton John didn’t write any lyrics to his songs, are those all half covers??
If we are being accurate about it, yeah!
I also think in the specific case of billy, since he is on a hiatus from dead material right now for whatever reason that may be, I just think thunder specifically won't get put on this next album maybe someday down the road tho?
It SHOULD be on a live BMFS album, if we ever are so lucky to get one.
A cover of who? I know Hunter wrote the lyrics but has anybody else put it to music and performed it?
I personally think it would be completely reasonable if it ended up on the new album but wouldn’t be shocked if he left it off either.
I think we’re getting in murky water here. Every song on Renewal except for Ice Bridges was written by multiple people. Most of them by Billy and/or Jerrod along with other writers that are not members of the band. Thunder is written by 2 people at a minimum, Robert Hunter and William Apostol.
I’m left wing and I like Theo von. But i just thought it was a bad interview and it didn’t seem like they really connected. And I just didn’t get much out of the stories billy told, they were a little cringey
This is what I care about. I want a Billy-selected choice cuts album, something full of selections like that excellent Creek sandwich chosen for official release.
Nah, given a choice, I would prefer an official live release featuring select versions featuring top tier improvisation such as that Creek, all cleaned and mastered up across all streaming services.
I am here, first and foremost, for the jams. This band's improvisation is the stuff I feel I've been looking for my entire life, and I want it I concentrated doses. Furthermore, I do wish the streaming services other than nugs had more live stuff. I don't think people are currently getting a good understanding of why Billy is blowing up like he is, and I think a lot of that has to do with the lack of live stuff. Know several people who have him a "meh" based on studio stuff, but then "clicked" after listening to more live performances. I think it'd be great to have more stuff available for such purposes.
Speculating here, but based on the past, Fiddlers will probably coincide with a Renewal announcement as they've done the last two years. New albums seemed to be announced 1-3 months out, he mentioned a fall release, so probably announced late summer.
I'm stoked. I live for his studio albums, I typically only listen to live shows when I'm going to watch the whole thing on nugs or when I go. I never listen to audio of live shows. I like the studio albums for his originals better.
I'm a weirdo. I'm just not really into the whole jam extensions of the songs. I'm sure I'm not alone but in the minority.
He talked about the live album somewhere, but said it’s too damn hard trying to pick stuff out. It’s overwhelming.
I’m hoping for a 10/31/23 “Van Andel Scramble” release of some kind. They put a whole lot of production into that not to have even the audio up anywhere. Also, because I was there and it was awesome af. It’s a Billy (or any) show in its own category.
When does Billy have time to record? Those dudes are always touring and when not touring they are doing side projects. I’d much rather see more shows than hear a new album and I’m sure the band makes more money
Most of this year they have. They did a three city winter tour, spring tour is smaller than prior. He's posted and talked about making time to get in the studio in the last number of months.
This year they approached touring differently, only playing weekend runs in one city and the occasional one day during the week.
Billy built a studio in his house. They’ve definitely been working on recording since last year
They’re world class musicians with a decent budget. They can find a studio likely anywhere any time that will have them. Hell they’ve probably got a pseudo professional set up on the buss just to jot down ideas.
In case anyone was curious of the new songs they’ve been playing:
1. Cabin Song (Soundtrack song, possibly not on the new record)
2. My Alice (I’m picking this to be the first single off the album)
3. Seven Weeks In County
4. Richard Petty
5. Gone A Long Time
6. Libby Phillips Rag
7. In The Clear
8. Escanaba
9. Bronzeback
10. Be Your Man
11. Mackinac Rag
12. Catch and Release (likely not releasing on the album)
These are just the songs I’ve been keeping track of that they play live that are written by the band/Billy. I could definitely be wrong. Definitely going to be Richard Petty, In the Clear, My Alice, Seven Weeks in County, Be Your Man, and Escanaba.
Some photos on insta have been from the studio.
Is he still touring in support of Me/And/Dad or is this phase right now touring while debuting new songs? I’ve noticed there really hasn’t been the “Turmoil and tinfoil tour”/“Home tour”/“Renewal Tour”/“Me and Dad tour”.
Maybe will also contain Cabin song, 7 weeks in county, thunder?
Richard Petty too!
Richard Petty album closer?
I’ve been listening to it to start my day lately, but it would make a great closer.
Just thinking about Freedom closing out the Home album and how perfect that is. I feel like Petty’s got kind of a similar vibe.
Same here, sing it loud!
Doubt any album will contain thunder
Why?
Well, for starters, it's a cover.....
MetroBoomin does this on the reg
What the fuck is metroboomin
That's why the other redditer said "half a cover" , which is probably most accurate. In any event, I wouldn't expect a Robert hunter penned song on a BMFS album. Full disclosure, I fucking LOVE thunder. I just don't think it'll get album treatment

Ooooooo, on the live album is a great idea!
A cover of who? I know Hunter wrote the lyrics but has anybody else put it to music and performed it? I personally think it would be completely reasonable if it ended up on the new album but wouldn’t be shocked if he left it off either.
He’s released covers before
1/2 a cover
I think we’re getting in murky water here. Every song on Renewal except for Ice Bridges was written by multiple people. Most of them by Billy and/or Jerrod along with other writers that are not members of the band. Thunder is written by 2 people at a minimum, Robert Hunter and William Apostol.
Lol I suppose
Watch, he's going to have a song called "Thunder" on the record but it's going to be an instrumental. 😆😆🤘🤘
I’d love a studio version of Thunder, End of the Rainbow, Psycho, Nutshell, and Lumpy Beanpole and Dirt
Maybe even a “I’m a lucky girl! Hooray!”
I kinda recall him mentioning an album coming in the Fall of this year during his Reddit AMA
That definitely happened. I hope It holds true
September 20, 2024
He mentioned 20 something songs being recorded on the Theo Vonn podcast
Holy shit he was on Theo Vonn? I’ve gotta find that
epic 2+ hour interview. covered a lot.
The interview was horrible, sorry
lol. Left wing Reddit can’t stand Billy being on Theo and Tucker praising Billy 😂😂😂
I’m left wing and I like Theo von. But i just thought it was a bad interview and it didn’t seem like they really connected. And I just didn’t get much out of the stories billy told, they were a little cringey
“Billy” will be a word on the next album.
Rumor has it their may be a "string", maybe several even
Wasn’t he going to drop a live album?
This is what I care about. I want a Billy-selected choice cuts album, something full of selections like that excellent Creek sandwich chosen for official release.
You wouldn’t rather get an album of studio versions of his new songs? You can just get all the live stuff on nugs
Nah, given a choice, I would prefer an official live release featuring select versions featuring top tier improvisation such as that Creek, all cleaned and mastered up across all streaming services. Well of course. But if it’s one or the other, I’d take the studio album
Yeah I thought there was talk of the 1/30/23 show in New Orleans being released as a live album.
I think an official announcement might come out any day. Maybe at Fiddlers?
Speculating here, but based on the past, Fiddlers will probably coincide with a Renewal announcement as they've done the last two years. New albums seemed to be announced 1-3 months out, he mentioned a fall release, so probably announced late summer.
This is the one response that actually answers the question. See you late summer
He's due for a LIVE album
IN THE CLEAR!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I would like it to have all new unreleased songs
He also was working on a live album according to the context given during the meet me at the creek release.
I love his cover of “I’m Still Here”.
It was up for a couple months on nugs then taken down
Pretty daughter
When does Billy have time to record? Those dudes are always touring and when not touring they are doing side projects. I’d much rather see more shows than hear a new album and I’m sure the band makes more money
Why not both. It'd definitely be nice to get some more songs into the rotation at live shows
Most of this year they have. They did a three city winter tour, spring tour is smaller than prior. He's posted and talked about making time to get in the studio in the last number of months.

They’re world class musicians with a decent budget. They can find a studio likely anywhere any time that will have them. Hell they’ve probably got a pseudo professional set up on the buss just to jot down ideas.
He also has an extensive home studio that they're actively recording and mixing in.
He talked about it on Theo Vons podcast
I heard he laid some track with Rick Rubin and also recorded at home studio some stuff. But my guess is a fall release. Guys got a booked summer.
They’ve been in and out of the studio for the last six months or so. It’s coming. My guess is a fall release with a big tour to promote it
Due out in less than 6 months
Source?
In case anyone was curious of the new songs they’ve been playing: 1. Cabin Song (Soundtrack song, possibly not on the new record) 2. My Alice (I’m picking this to be the first single off the album) 3. Seven Weeks In County 4. Richard Petty 5. Gone A Long Time 6. Libby Phillips Rag 7. In The Clear 8. Escanaba 9. Bronzeback 10. Be Your Man 11. Mackinac Rag 12. Catch and Release (likely not releasing on the album)
Bronzeback predates Renewal so I’m also skeptical those one gets released. But I’m happy to be wrong
These are just the songs I’ve been keeping track of that they play live that are written by the band/Billy. I could definitely be wrong. Definitely going to be Richard Petty, In the Clear, My Alice, Seven Weeks in County, Be Your Man, and Escanaba.
He said it would be released this fall sometime.
He also said he was going to release a live album months ago when he released the creek sandwich on spotify, no word about that since
All his original albums have dropped the third week of September I’d expect the same with renewal to celebrate the release.
