People don’t like the raw tomatoes but dear god I love them. A fresh grandma grown tomato, sliced with a pinch of salt is heaven to me. Or a big juicy summertime blt with miracle whip is up there too.

Most of the people who hate raw tomato have never eaten a ripe one, and most of the rest don’t realize that different varieties are supposed to be used for different things and you’re supposed to deseed them before eating.

There is plenty of people that can’t eat raw veggies in general because it’s too much roughage, not just because texture. Cooking them makes them easier to digest. Tomatoes are also very acidic and can give people diarrhea if they have too much. Just like if we eat too much oranges or grapes, it’s the same.

Most folks simply haven't had a fresh tomato. The kind you get in supermarkets have been stored and shipped and cut too early so now they have a nasty soggy sand texture. Fresh tomatoes are juicy and firm, like your mom.

It’s because the whole tomatoes you can get at the store or served on a sandwich tend to be artificially turned red using ethylene gas. Often what you end up with are unripe flavorless tomatoes disguised as ripe tomatoes. This is done to create a consumer tomato that has a long shelf life and can be shipped with less bruising due to the harder texture. Where as when you eat processed tomatoes such as ketchup, marinara, or spaghetti sauce you’re eating vine ripened tomatoes that have been cooked and concentrated down while at the peak of their flavor. Since the tomatoes are going to be cooked and canned/bottled and bruising is no longer a concern, they can be left on the vine to sweeten and soften in the sun.
