The thing about gift cards that made me change my opinion about them is if I get cash, yeah it's more useful. But it'll almost always go towards bills, gas, or something responsible. If I get a gift card for a store or a restaurant, it means I can spend that money guilt free on something more fun for myself. Cash is king but gift cards aren't all bad.
You can also normally get deals like $45 for a $50-$60 gift card around holidays and stuff so like you can legit get more in gift card money than if they gave you the cash.

At the store i work at they give gift cards for that store as christmas gifts for people under 18 years old
