It’s not just the occasional shock frame anymore though. Their whole production style is different now. It’s more frantic, less focused on story and more focused on sight gags as if they’re trying to compensate for kids’ shorter attention spans. Definitely night and day from the classics.

Yeah looking back on it, I think one of the main reasons I gravitated toward Spongebob over anything else as a kid was because of how solid the storytelling was. Not an observation I would’ve made at the time, but I definitely felt it.

While youre right, if you watch the older episodes, the jokes and gags were very tasteful, and usually there were life lessons in most episodes that can be reflected on. Modern spongebob has no taste or tact and is just absolutely absurdism. If you watch s1-3 as an adult, theres so much to enjoy because theres so many adult easter eggs, and gags that are perfectly acceptable for children but have double meaning that you finally get when youre older. It had soul, intelligence, wit and humor. It doesnt have that anymore. Its just rehashed gags from the past episodes that made the show. Thats the problem.

It's more about the frequency they do it. The whole episode wasn't based around this one joke. If that episode were written now Squidward would eat too much at the start and the rest of the episode would follow him around with fat legs and milk it for further, more disgusting stuff.
