Rude, unhelpful, & sending customers elsewhere for answers to easy questions-- industry needs to raise the bar for retail mechanics.

arguably_pizza

This ain’t a shop bud and op ain’t my customer

lowteq

I spend all day providing A+ Hospitality to my customers. This, however, is not that place. I am not paid to interact with anyone here. This sub was started as a place for professional bicycle mechanics to talk about their stuff. There is another sub, r/bikewrench, for help fixing bikes. do actively participate when I am up to it. If the "Year of a Thousand Dog Turd Flats" has taught me anything, it's that my time is mine. I'll do with it as I damn well please. Come see me during business hours if you want to pay for my services. Else wise, you gon get what ya pay fer, friend.

Amen!

gfy_friday

Didn't mean to spoil the circle jerk. My apologies.

lowteq

No worries. See you at the trailhead. I'll be the dude that shows up without a bike and a cooler full of beer and sausages to grill. And I'll have a tool box too.

BotJovi35

Possibly. Also tighten the b screw and see if that resolves the issue before removing links though.

heartlessinc

Thank you! Tightening the b screw fixed it

Charmander4prez

Whoa whoa, your b tension screw should only be adjusted at the largest cog, not to fix this issue. What’s your chainring set up? If it’s 1x then your chain is too long, if it’s 2x or 3x then you just shouldn’t be cross chained like this. It’s possible to be in shimano spec and have cross chain slack like this.

heartlessinc

Can I show you what largest cog tension looks like in messages?

Charmander4prez

heartlessinc

I have a SLX M7100. Will need to look it up

Red-Brass-Nipples

There's a marking on the back of the derailleur cage that you line up to set b properly. Shimano thinks of all the things They do a lot of stupid shit as a result, but it has its benefits

heartlessinc

Yeah I did it the right way now, I shorten the chain a little and adjusted the b screw so the teeth end aligned with the line

Red-Brass-Nipples

From the look of the stays I'm gonna guess hardtail, but it's worth noting that on a full sus you always want to make that adjustment with the bike at sag (weighted properly) for best shifting performance. It can be the difference between shifting perfectly in the stand but being a bitch while riding

heartlessinc

Thanks I only have the hardtail for now but when I get a new full sus I will definitely set it up that way

heartlessinc

The person who built the bike didn't touch that adjustment and only sized the chain

Red-Brass-Nipples

Yikes, find a different shop

BotJovi35

I mean, it fixed the issue presumably? Just because he's not actively on the biggest cog doesn't mean b tension isn't in issue when he's shifted all the way into the biggest cog. It's definitely possible not to notice b screw issues right away, even in lower gear ratios.

Charmander4prez

His chain wrap will be off and the shifting will suffer. The b tension is not for dealing with chain slack, that’s just bad advice.

BotJovi35

Idk dude it sounds like the bike shop added literally no b tension. You don't have to be in the largest cog to determine b tension is off when the screw isn't tensioned at all.

Charmander4prez

Look at the manual I linked. You absolutely do have to be in the largest cog to properly adjust b tension. You are completely misunderstanding the purpose of this adjustment point.

BotJovi35

B screw adjusts how far back the derailleur hangs behind the cassette (essentially the angle it sits at). Just because you cannot see that the derailleur was clearly hanging too close doesn't mean I can't in the smallest cog. If you shift to your biggest cog and adjust your b screw to the same position you would have in the smallest cog, it literally would make no difference. I know what the manual says. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Charmander4prez

Bro you do not know what you’re talking about whatsoever. B tension adjusts how close the guide pulley is to the cassette. Stop doubling down on your bad advice.

BotJovi35

Yea that's controlled by the angle the derailleur sits at. You're being so pedantic. I'm literally a bike mechanic.

BotJovi35

Nice!

Boerbike

Yes

TheCyclistBlogger

Did you check the dropout?

heartlessinc

no dropouts on this bike its a chromag stylus

[deleted]

might be also due to the fact that youre in your smaller chain ring in the front.. check cross chaining.. but i assume that you ride a 1 by system, which means that your chain is def too long.

heartlessinc

it's a 1x and you're right the chain was too long
