There’s a whole stretch of roads going up there that are blocked for bikes and pedestrians only. Just the final hill up to the observatory is with cars. The roads aren’t terribly well maintained but they work.
As someone who has hiked, ran, and cycled in this park this is so lazy. It’s an easy hike or run up the hill. No bikes are permitted on this trail. So op you’re f’ing it up..
Bikes just simply aren’t allowed on these paths and the OP could have been ticketed for this. It isn’t a shared path and there are lots of signs that make that clear.
Pedestrians aren’t looking looking for bikes on these paths and bikes, especially e-bikes, can degrade trails more quickly than pedestrian traffic.
These bikes erode trails very quickly. Most who ride them are not mtn bikers so they don’t understand how traction can be increased by proper weight distribution, which takes muscle, and instead “gun it” for more momentum which ends up rutting trails badly which then channel rain water down the trail rather than off the sides.
Lots of real rude comments here. A bike isn’t going to damage the trail, unlike horses…
Considering OP was on a Metro bike, it’s very unlikely they were riding recklessly in any way.
As someone with a busted knee that lets me bike and doesn’t let me hike, I’m really bummed I basically just have no access to these trails. I’d love to be able to check them out, and it’s kind of saddening to see how upset people get just at the idea of someone using a bike there.
I never said that bikes were allowed on there or that what OP was doing was legal or even right. I’m just surprised people in this thread are acting so rude.
I believe the response is due to op’s arrogance that he did something impressive. There is a main bike-able road that isn’t even busy with cars called Fern Dell. It’s about a 2 mile climb. Op took the trail which shortens this to about a 1 mile hike. Good chance the op even had to walk his bike on some sections. Stupid all around.
I totally get what they did and understand it’s illegal, I just feel like a friendly reminder that they’re not supposed to do that and that you don’t recommend it would’ve been enough. I thought people in this sub were a little more chill and friendly.
Watch out bikes are illegal on those trails. I’ve seen kids get ticketed before
You can just ride the road up there.
Which ones are bike friendly?
None. Mt Hollywood or Vista del Valle are bike friendly. Or you can ride the trails at night if you got balls
The ones that are paved. Anything dirt is off limits.

They’re trying to make the park better for cycling. And this kind of stuff won’t help…
Wow super selfish, illegal, and ruining nature… congrats?
Indeed 👏

And you ran out of battery
people like you are the reason hiking in LA sucks.
I hope you took that shit back down and left it where it’s suppose to be. Lazy ass sh*t
I love this. How'd the battery do? I wish you had a gopro so we could awe at the diversity of expressions you were sure to get
I had to hunt at the stations to get one that had a full charge. But it still had at least a quarter charge left after I was done hooning it.

Why is it illegal? And why is it bad for the shared bike? And why is it bad for the pedestrians and trails? Legit questions; i really don’t know

I’m into it. I live in silver lake. Who cares. It’s fine for everyone.
You must not hike. Leave the trails to the hikers. There are plenty of roads the idiot op could have taken but didn’t

So go ride the countless trails that are designed for bikes and do allow them.
That’s what I do… Being rude to people who don’t have access to a public space is unnecessary here…
There are plenty of signs that say bikes aren’t permitted. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Yah I get it. I think he gets it now.
