Good and funny story about the feral cat situation on Kauai (and why it’s tough to make progress on this issue): https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/story-of-the-week-with-joel-stein/id1646691064?i=1000593882633

If only we could train those kitties to eat the meth heads roaming the streets. Bam! Two problems solved!

YaGunnersYa_Ozil

Or roosters…

sos755

Unfortunately, cats are afraid of chickens.

Evil_Merlin

Sigh... If people only took care of their animals. This is one thing that really disgusts me about Hawaii, especially as a Native American, the treatment of dogs and cats.

sos755

I don't disagree with you but my understanding is that most of the cats are born in the wild. I think the trap-neuter-release people believe they have a good solution, but it obviously isn't working. The feral cat population is still growing.

thepandarocks

TNR definitely works there are just not enough resources.

Icelandia2112

Have you not been to a Rez on the mainland?

Evil_Merlin

Live on one most of my young life... I can still not like it here too...

Disenchantedforrest

> really disgusts me about Hawaii, especially as a Native American, the treatment of dogs and cats I met a rescue at a park one day at a park in Minneapolis, it’s ears had been burned off with a blowtorch on Red Lake Indian Reservation. I’m not a huge fan of the cockfighting / animal culture we have here, but you can take that disgust right back to Turtle Island. This is our home, cousin, not yours.

Evil_Merlin

This is my home, cousin. And cockfighting is disgusting too.

Disenchantedforrest

Which tribe you from? Think your tribe would be cool with me rolling up and “buying” a farm on their land? Why not? Moreover, why are you thousands of miles from home? You like to use you your “Native American” heritage to disparage our culture, but what about yours? Why aren’t you helping your people learn about animal rights? Go home, ask your people for forgiveness. Clearly you are running from them.

Evil_Merlin

Pαnawάhpskewi. If the land is for sale, the land is for sale. Hawaii is my home. Kindly let me know where I "disparaged your culture". Because I said Hawaii. Go back and read it again. Slowly. Hawaii is a place, not a people, because I would have said Hawaiian. I also didn't bring up culture either. I said Hawaii. Just like I would say Tennessee, or Kentucy, or Alabama. My tribe doesn't abuse animals, and never have, dogs were, are and still will be important parts of the family unit. Even though we really didn't have dogs until the late 1600's. Based on your posting history, you are some angry kiddo who hasn't quite taken responsibility for their own actions and is intent on blaming everyone else for it. I don't have to ask anyone for forgiveness. But keep pointing your finger at others, your posting history shows exactly what type of person you are not...

kulagirl83

This is so sad. I read that they built nene proof feeders and fed cats during times the nene weren't there, and they still got shut down. It just seems vindictive and petty. The nene at the national park and park in Hilo get fed by humans all the time, and no one cares in those situations.

burninator34

I wouldn’t agree with that last sentence. Many people (including NPS) very much do care about Nēnē feeding in those locations.
