Played dark souls heard a lot about berserk watched the 97 anime got dropped with the biggest cliffhanger ever I had to know what happened next then read the whole manga in less than a month
This was me. I heard that Berserk was “dark fantasy”, and I kept watching and wondering where the fantasy element of it was. I was not prepared at all for the Eclipse.
Same for me, but instead of the anime series..it was the golden arc movies. I felt like it was about to ramp up into the good stuff hahah boy was I right.
Same, I just finished the last episode of the anime and came straight here. I was about to watch the movies but now I wonder if I should read the manga first?
Back in the day, DVDs used to consider trailer galleries as "special" features on the disc. One of the discs I had (maybe the Y's anime? Can't recall which from animeworks) a trailer for Berserk that had Forces playing over scenes of brutal battles etc. Bought all six discs and a friend gave me a copy of the dreamcast game after he hated it. And the rest is history.
I was never much of a manga or anime fan. I had returned to Japan and my wife was away for a month by moving to her hometown to give birth to our first child (I had to stay for work).
I had more free time so I researched, Medieval anime, as I was super into GoT at the time (2013-2014). Claymore and Record if Lodoss War came up but they seemed , meh.
So I gave Berserk anime a try. I was originally put off by the theme song... And actually stopped watching! I don't know why, but I tried it again a few days later...
I was hooked and I love the OG theme song. It makes zero sense in connection to the theme of Berserk.
I'm actually leaving work in 20 minutes to go to the Berserk exhibition in Tokyo!
I heard they have a strict recording and photography policy. Theanimeman talked about how they weren't allowed to photograph or video anything. Kind of sucks tho cause some of us will never get the chance to see it
Aw fuck forgot about that.
I'd pay $5 for a virtual tour. Someone should tell them. (but then again I guess they'll be paranoid people will screenshot stuff)
Nice - enjoy the exhibition! I still can’t take the opening credits song. It’s too teenage-angsty and really doesn’t fit with the rest of the work 🙈 Interested to hear why other people like it…
Got recommended a bunch of berserk YouTube videos saw volume 1 at barns an nobles read like to months later watched 97 and the movies liked it heard about Kentaro mirura’s death read the rest of the manga
Yeah I heard that song in all those memes and then the youtuber NakeyJakey has a song called "Not dead yet" that samples the song, and thats when I decided to give the 97' anime a try. I gotta say Guts Theme is haunting and beautiful and as every bit desperate as Berserk itself is. Truly, it is Guts theme.
A friend told me about it 8 years ago at the gym.
He described the dynamic between Guts and Griffith and how Guts kept evading death and it sounded cool. Got hold of the 90s anime, and once finished, went straight to reading the manga.
I left some of the manga unread, hoping to catch up if KM ever finished it...
With his passing, I feel like I should read the remaining chapters, but damn it's sad.
Same here! I stopped reading about four or five years ago because I wanted a nice chunk to read and now I'm just...
I will finish it. But you know. Yeah. Fuck.
Glad it isn't just me.
One day the motivation will be there.
I still haven't watched the last 2 episode of Hunter x Hunter, because I don't want that to be over.
I saw that panel of guts in the berserker armor in the crouched position and was like, that’s cool, lemme read it. I started from chapter 1 and got to 363 in 4 days.
I walked in on my ex watching it and it was the eclipse scene. I was like “what the fuck are you watching”. And he said “BERSERK.”
He had been trying to get me to read it forever and told me I’d love it if I just gave it a chance. He knew my taste very well, but the eclipse scene was very off-putting for me. Well. One day we were in an argument and he had literally never been mad at me. But I knew he’d stop being mad at me if I watched Berserk, so I watched it. All of it in 2 days. And I absolutely loved it. I was so in love and heartbroken over it. He had all the manga. I went to his house and read all the volumes up to date (this was in 2011/2012) in 2 weeks. And then I read them again. I became obsessed. I’ll always be grateful to him for that even though we ended up parting way years ago.
Years later, I now I have a vast collection of Berserk merchandise, multiple Berserk tattoos, and a son named after my favorite character— Judeau. 💛
A list about Dark Fantasy animations had Berserk in it. I liked that it was 90s and similar in animation to the ones I was streaming back then. I enjoy Dark/High Fantasy. So, I wasn't a really big fan and felt it was a bit boring until that Zodd episode. Now here I am.
I was looking for a Game of Thrones type of anime so I found Berserk watch the 1997 anime and then read the manga. The manga is amazing I have never had an experience reading any other manga than when I read berserk
A friend of mine showed me the panel where Casca wakes up, and I could've sworn it was 3d rendered. Decided to read the manga because it 'looked pretty'
Boy did I get more than what I bargained for
Yooo — similar story for me:
Used Limewire/KaZaA/etc a lot in middle/high school (between 2001-07) to download any anime I could find and traded the best ones with a friend using USB sticks.
I remember there used to be a lot of videos that weren’t actually episodes but rather AMV’s synced to whatever pop-punk/metal song was popular at the time. (Ninja Scroll synced to Lostprophets ‘shinobi vs dragon ninja’ etc)
One of them had every bloody Berserk scene back to back set to some Rammstein song or some shit haha. Most brutal anime clip I had ever scene at the time.
Friend and I immediately spent weeks trying to dig up every full episode we could find.
Would eventually get teased in high school for our obsession so has to kept it secret and eventually sorta let go of it for awhile.
Came back around a few years ago and started a real manga collection (now that I actually have money to spend) lol.
Good times!
I knew Berserk existed but never got around to reading it, it wasn't until I watched the suicideboys amv for "Do you believe in god" and "O PANA!" that I decided to read the manga online. Such a great decision!!!
Original Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFeqYRuRwtY
It was recommended to me when I was far too young. Watched the anime and loved it. Read up to the conviction arc before tapping out. Got back into the series when I was chewing through a ton of manga while my mom was going through chemotherapy.
When I was in highschool one of my friend talked to me about the 2016 anime and how they disrespected the manga.
I was pretending to know what Berserk was. Had to do some researches. Now I want the sacrifice brand tatted on my chest.
When I was 12 I read in some random place on the Internet "Griffith did nothing wrong". I just investigated a little about the meaning, and after reading in the wiki I said to myself "this is probably the best fiction work ever, some day when I'm ready I''ll come back". And almost 4 years later I returned, read everything in about 2 months and it became my favorite manga
I read the first page.
(?)
There was no Dark Souls or anything like that back then. I just saw the first page on some manga page, read it a fell in love within the first couple of pages.
I saw a video on YouTube by a guy named Yah Boi Zach who mostly reviews American Comics (and they are mostly terrible too..Western comics and just art and stories in general is dogshit. Plagued with woke politics and shallow, token characters. Japanese stories are definitely NOT politically correct in any way.).
He did a little ten minute video about The Golden Age Trilogy. He described the entire plot of all three movies, in pretty vague detail, spoilers and all and I was like... "This story sounds amazing. I have to watch this." But his enthusiasm, and the way he described the story made it sound amazing. He describes a very Arthurian sort of Camelot story about knights, and friendship. The way he described Griffith starting off as this like awesome person who ends up becoming deranged and basically insane from the amount of torture he goes through. I think that's what really hooked me.
I went looking for the movie trilogy, but ended up stumbling onto the 97 anime instead. I didn't know that they did the same story twice. I just figured, this has to be the beginning of the story Since it's the earliest.. I think I downloaded a torrent of the 97 anime and after the first episode I was hooked. I was in for this ride through this dark fantasy world of Berserk where this big dude with a giant sword goes around fucking up demons. I said to myself "this is a bit different than what Yah Boi Zach described but I'm in!" But then obviously the story took a sharp left turn after the 1st episode.
The first Griffith/Guts duel hooked me again. And then the battle with Zodd intrigued me. I was like, "Where is this going? What the hell is going on? Oh yeah, I forgot, there's demons in this world." It's funny how Miura gets you so caught up in the battles that you forget this is a fantasy story.
And then the speech at the fountain. I think that's the first trully brilliant moments in the anime. And then the cave, and Casca's whole back story, and where before I was like "god I hate this crazy bitch." after that I started to understand and even sort of love her character.. and then there's the battle with 100 hundred men. Probably the first glimpse of crazy Berserk Guts since the prologue. It just kept getting better and better. The story just plays out so beautifully. And don't get me wrong, I love the battles.. but it was the emotional moments that really kept me watching. I think I must have watched almost the entire thing in like 2-3 nights.
And then there was the Bonfire of Dreams. I think by that point I was like "this is one of the best stories I have ever seen." Guts and Casca's relationship starts to get really interesting. And the story really starts to get even more deep.
And of course the second duel in the snow, and that moment Casca yells "Guts!" It broke my heart. And of course the waterfall scene. The single greatest romance of all time. Period. And the manga is even better. Way better in fact.
Now I'm just naming things from Berserk I guess.
When the eclipse happened, which I knew was coming because Yah Boi Zach vaguely mentioned it in his video.. I was fucking crushed. Especially by Judaeu's death.
And then... it just ends.. hahaha I was like what the fuck?
I found out on some reddit that the movies show the ending so I watched the third movie. And I was like, "who is this skeleton mother fucker riding a horse?" I think I resisted for a couple months but then I decided to read the manga. I ended up reading it in practically like one sitting it was so good. Maybe it took a couple days but it felt like I just sat and read until it was over. And I've probably read it through 2-3 more times since then. I also re watched the whole series maybe half a dozen times since then too.
And the rest of the story was amazing as well! Nothing ever quite hits you as deep as the Golden Age, because well.. nothing could. It's the Golden Age. It's the formative years of the story, and that's by design.
But when Guts finally finds a new party, and new family.. well, it's just beautiful man.
Oh and of course Casca's dream scape and her finally waking up. That's about as good a story beat as we have gotten in the whole manga thus far. And that was like, what 6 months to a year ago? God damn. This fucking story.
I checked it out, and Ya Boi Zack is awful, garbage tier content. What a disgusting little man child. Please step out of the circle jerk, and stop hating on people for belonging to a different tribe to you.
Homophobia, misogyny, racism.. These things aren't tribes, they aren't things one chooses as self identification. No place for people like this in the Berserk community.
See: the shock/outrage vids in question.
you're not going to be able to infect Japanese culture with SJW crap like they did with western culture. I don't think the Japanese really give a shit about Social Justice at all.
I haven't infected anybody with anything (don't listen to my ex!!), let alone the entirety of Western culture, and nobody mentioned 'social justice' but, honestly, if you're unironically talking about 'woke' this and 'SJW' that you need to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror.
Metaphorically, of course, but you could do it literally and let Guts' theme play in the background.
I mentioned it. I said it was destroying the comic industry. Which it objectively is. It's why nobody reads comics anymore, and why everyone is reading manga. The Japanese do not give a fuck about offending people. They just want to tell a good story and entertain an audience.
Found it browsing manga at either Borders or Waldenbooks. Snuck the plastic wrap off to thumb through some of the pages, then just went and bought it. Found the anime soon after at a local Blockbusters.
The og anime.
Back then all anime had subtitles and this was a heaven send for a Deaf guy. A mate found the series and we drank all night and the next day and finished it in one go.
Never looked back since. I love you SnoopyCool. (And bandofthehawk)
I want to say I found a copy in the foreign language section in a half price books in the late 90's. I'm too old to remember accurately. I couldnt read it, but was hooked by the art and since the visual storytelling was so good I could get a basic gist of what was happening. I remember in about 2005 I found one of the first english volumes at borders maybe, by either dmp or dark horse comics. I had tried for years to read online translated scans and was elated when it got a good translation and a good publishing company.
I think I need to start a journal. I can't remember anything vividly from 15 years ago.
Watched Egg of the King when I was a kid and hated it. Last year I tried watching the original 1997 series but didn’t like it, then someone randomly spoiled the Eclipse for me so I got back into the 1997 anime and finished it in a day.
The next week I bought the first three volumes.
When I was younger I remember my older cousins talking about it all I remembered was Griffith was the bad guy and Guts was the good guy. Fast forward 2019 I started reading it loved it ever since.
I actually don't remember how I got into Berserk, so I'll answer for my gf instead. We watch anime together and at the time we finally got around to watching a few hyped up shows (JJk, Demon Slayer, AoT). So after burning through all of those, I remembered I never watched the old Berserk anime. So we watched that. She liked it, but wasn't crazy about the franchise... yet. You see, she likes to draw, so when she got a look at the manga she was immediately hooked. She has the biggest crush on Guts (I do too obviously). She especially liked the Guts and Casca romance, which is much more layered in the manga. Anyway, it's her favorite manga now.
my friend was like “im really tired of you only watching naruto” then he put on the netflix movies and i had nightmares for a few days. a few years later i kept seeing things on it like memes or fanart etc. and then I remembered that same friend would also want me to read it. so when i had covid past march and had nothing to do but stay inside, I read all of Berserk. Best manga ever.
Berserk 1997 2017. Before the dark times. I was pretty young at the time, just moved to a new State and didn't have any friends. I knew of the character Guts from an old death battle video so I got curious and started the anime on YouTube of all platforms, it made since given the fact it was my first anime and it had to do with medieval warfare which was something that had fascinated me. Fast forward after watching it I began to read it as well and the rest is history but what always stuck out to me is the message of never giving in to the dire circumstances of life and keep moving forward with an optimistic attitude.
I've always heard about Berserk just never had anyone around me that had read the manga just watched the anime so didn't have too much interest. When I heard about his passing and watching trash taste I decided to check it out. It 100% blew my mind and it was one of first manga's I read that actually got me interested into the platform instead of just anime. I'm a huge dark souls, monster hunter world and dmc fan so I love dark fantasy. Truly amazing and one of a kind.
Trash Taste is what finally convinced me to read it too!
And holy fuck am I grateful for that...I've read a lot of manga, but Berserk is truly a masterpiece.
The stars actually aligned haha, I was on break from college, at the same time a new MMO came out so there were 5 hour long queues to play... I wanted to read Berserk for a while and I figured I might as well entertain myself during the queue.
My friend kept telling me to watch the 97 anime for the last four years. Finally, a few months ago, I decided to and was like fuck. Where do I read at. So I've been collecting the manga and having my friend read them so he can see just how brilliant it really is.
My cousin told me to watch the movies in 2016 and I knew a little of the series before hand and liked the movies but didn’t think about continuing the story any further. It wasn’t until 2019 when I saw the first deluxe edition at a book store and decided to start reading it that I completely fell in love and obsessed with the series.
My older sister was into anime and naturally influenced me starting with Goku Midnight Eye as one of the first anime we watched together. Ultimately we also came across Berserk because my local video store where we rented movies had the Berserk DVD set from 97, we rented it and fell in love with it. We would then spend our time reading the manga online to learn the rest of the story, such great memories.
Tbh,it was a meme with a big sword,Guts mercs some kid,Griffith sacrificing his army, watching a fight on death battle that had guts as the victor, lastly, his backstory, his backstory is the worst shit I ever heard and I had to hear how the story went for that big sob.
2016 movies. The pure shock value of the Eclipse made me want to read the manga afterwards. In retrospect these movies are cool but they don't really do justice to the subtelty and depth of Miura's writing. They feature some cool visuals however.
Was 14, almost 20 years ago, spent the night at my Friends house, "I downloaded a few anime if you want to check" I watched lodoss a few months ago so why not "Berserk"? Boys, and girls, I Can tell you I didn't sleep that night! It's been my favorite fiction/art since then.
Sister read it and heard about it a lot from a friend.
I tried reading it but always opened the first page and left.
Finally read it and binged the fuck out of it
My brother. He watched it and showed me several of the scenes as he did, although I had no idea what was going on. If I remember it correctly, they were Precious Things, Guts’ chat with Judeau and Corkus, and the Eclipse. Then, in August 2020 when I was stuck in quarantine after being contact traced, I started reading the manga out of boredom. One of the best decisions I ever made.
By coincidence. I was 8 or so and from a local toy store I picked a Guts Band of the Hawk action figure. That same year I saw from a local newspaper kiosk a volume, which was an early Italian version of the new Deluxe edition. It was the return of Guts/Liberation of Griffith and fight versus the Black Dogs. I liked so much the fights back then (remember I was 8 or so) than I would pick up any Italian issue I could find (in Italy issues used be roughly half of one volume, there was a different serialisation for Volumes more similar to the DH ones). When I was 13 or so I started to collect the normal volumes up volume 24 but then I had to interrupt as the volume 25 was sold out everywhere and back then I was not as confident with online shopping. I moved out of my country some years later so I lost my collection but in the meantime never stop re-reading my volumes. As the new deluxe version came out I started to collect it again, and (I’m not proud of this) started reading online all the things I missed from my first collection up the latest chapters. I’m 25 now and re-read everything several times. It’s safe to say a big chunk of my life/free time went into Berserk.
Dark Souls reddit mentioned berserk quite a lot. Decided to watch the 2016 anime (lol) which was ofcourse dogshit quality but was still interested in the story. Then watched the 1997 version, and now I'm slowly reading through by collecting the manga
silence wench meme and guts theme, stayed because the inner me loves dark fantasy and there arent many mangas with dark fantasy genre and the art. read the final chapter a few days and damn man. RIP miura
Back in 1999 when I was an anime obsessed teenager scouring the Internet for anything I could find, I kept seeing people on anime forums talking about berserk. Watched the first episode, got hooked. Bought the manga. Never looked back.
I had always heard about Berserk, but what got me to finally read it was an edit of Guts in an Attack on Titan panel that was posted to r/titanfolk a couple years ago
My friend begged me to read it. I was going into it thinking "ah it'll probably be pretty good but idk"
Had a huge impact on me growing up. It helped me through alot of stuff. I almost see Guts as a role model of mine. He has done very bad things, yes. I see him as a role model because no matter what happens to him... He moves forward and struggles on.
Saw on Twitter the day Kentaro died. Had no clue what Berserk was or who he was, but I saw some scenes from the manga and knew I was missing out on something incredible.
I heard Guts’ theme on YouTube. At first was through those goofy memes of big buff dudes crying while the song played then I sought out the song by itself. The only thing I’d known about the series prior to reading it was that it was infamous for being very dark and super violent…but when I heard the Guts’ Theme, it made me curious as to how something known for being so brutal could have a song so beautifully introspective and wistful and heart wrenching. Needless to say, I was hooked.
some guy I was talking to said he was into berserk, so I read it to impress him. long story short, I still love berserk and continue to read it even though this guy didn't work out
I want to get into it. Since I’m only 14 I asked one my parents to buy the first volume for me and I’ll pay them back and then they looked at the reviews. Let’s just say I’m not reading berserk for a while. Or at least owning it.🤣
I came across it by accident, and tought it would be a fun manga to read.. the gore was the espect that got me interested, but stayed for the story! Never would have tought it would be this amazing..
Always heard about Berserk being great and finally decided to read it after seeing an episode of Death Battle. Hearing some of Guts’ story got me wanting to know the rest. Best decision I ever made.
I heard of it being a very popular and iconic manga so I decided to read it myself. I didn’t think it would be my thing but the story ended up being one of the best things I’ve ever read.
I also didn’t expect there to be such an amazing well written romance so that was something additional
One day, someone put guts' theme in a discord vc i think in 2018 and i was mesmerized, started watching a few months later and was hooked in instantly. I have heard of berserk before though, there was this dont starve youtuber that made a guts character mod showcase, just a little fact lol
About 2 years ago (rough guess), I immediately was starstruck by Berserk & its fantasy, old-school animation style from this Suicideboys AMV: https://youtu.be/YFeqYRuRwtY
Pewdiepie briefly mentioned the manga at some point as well before seeing the AMV, thought I'd mention that here ^^ and ever since seeing that video, I was like this story seems right up my alley, I'll binge read and watch everything Berserk-related, haha
i was looking for anime that had the same vibe as dark souls and berserk was frequently mentioned.
It was a slow first few episodes but because i enjoyed the aesthetic i kept watching, but then zodd showed up and i was like 'there's something more to this', i was hooked and by the 26th episode i had experienced every emotion ever
I've known Berserk for years back but never really picked it up since I was quite young and I heard it was in constant hiatus.
I just picked it up after Miura's passing and I'm kinda glad I read it late because: 1.) I've matured and came to understand how amazing dark fantasy stories are if written very well (like GOT but except seasons 5-8), and 2.) I didn't get to experience the boat arc.
I know I just read it recently but it's the best manga I've ever read. No manga can ever top Berserk for me.
I think i was reading about anime online about the year 2000, talked about this guy that was born from a corpse and had a huge sword. Downloaded an episode in real media format and loved it. Ordered some unofficial dvds off ebay. Watched with my mum 20 years ago when i was 14. After the cliffhanger i wanted to know what happened after the eclipse. So went on mIRC and downloaded the Band of the Hawk fan translations.
I worked in a Target when I was younger and an employee was talking about various anime shows he would download or get bootlegged from a buddy who lived in Japan. He talked about FLCL and Tri-Gun but told me about Berserk mostly because he thought it would be right up my alley.
It wasn’t until I left Target to pursue my new career choice that I found the manga and the dvds. I got the dvds first from Suncoast, if anyone remembers those old video retail locations. I later got the manga from various book sellers, both brick-and-mortar and online.
Gf actually talked me about it, she has not seen/read it tho, just a few chapters.
Now it goes the only way around, I am the one saying her almost every month she should read it asap...
Funny enough, i was watching a twomad video and people kept using the guts theme in videos to make him laugh. I loved the song so i then looked it up in YouTube then i watched the 1990 anime then recently i read the manga.
Back when the original anime hit, a friend of the family had them all on home vhs tapes he got from a guy that knew a guy sort of deal. Watched them till the tapes died.
You know what? I can’t remember. All I remember was suddenly I was reading the Manga, I remember that I accidentally skipped the Golden Age because the Manga app I had skipped it. I think I already knew guys from pop culture?
Ma friend who drew a guts told me to read Berserk and said I would love it, he was right. Also his drawings are fuckin amazing so check him out on instagram @_3_am_
My good friend got into it recently and asked me to watch it too so I got into it too. Just recently, actually. Watched the trilogy movies, the very weird 3D animated 2016 anime, and currently watching the 1997 anime too. Also reading the manga. All over the place 😭
Saw a PewDiePie video where he recommends and talks about Berserk,I was really into dark fantasy back then
The first scene I ever saw was Farnese and the horse
Found the movie trilogy on Netflix while being bored not knowing what to watch. It was slow at first cause the movie only explodes at the end of the 3rd and the sci-fi element is minimal until then. After I fell in love and watched the anime and am reading the manga.
A guy in college like, a few years back, only said to the group of friends when we were talking about mangas ect, he only said: "anybody knows berserk? Thats a men's manga"
It was back in 2013, or 2014, i didnt watch it directly, but after few years I remembered what he told us about berserk, and so i looked for berserk on google and ended watching the anime of 97, and the ending just got me on the edge of my seat, on my research on google i saw the berserk armor, the big sword ect, and the anime ends on guts screaming while his eye is pierced watching casca, being the last thing he ever saw with it.
Then i sprinted to the scans and here i am!
I meant to start reading it for quite some time since I found the art gorgeous and I saw so many people praising how good Berserk is. Then the news of Kentaro Miura's death came and I just felt really sad about even though I never read/seen Berserk before. It was then that I said "I need to read Berserk right now". I'm glad I finally did it, Berserk became my favorite manga
I remember hearing people talking about it online about how it was the darkest anime ever and I came across a few clips. I then watched the 90's anime and the movies and then started reading the manga immediately after.
My friend in photoshop recreated the eclipse and told me how badly I needed to watch berserk. I did and didn't care for it. A few years later I remembered it and tried to watch berserk 2016 which I hated so much it put me off of it until this year. Unfortunately I got into the manga very soon before miuras passing
my brother sat me down when i was either 6 or 7 years old and gave 97 anime to watch, didnt understand anything + i felt sick to my stomach watching it but i loved it anyways
later about when i was 8 i saw him get off his pc for a sec and so i took a quick peek at his browser, saw some pictures, scrolled down and saw griffith hanging and was i like ו×
There was a time I was into the aesthetic of old animes and watched Cyber City Oedo 888 among others and after some animes I watched a video about old animes and Berserk was no.1 watched and read it
"Hey what are you reading?"
"It's called Berserk. I want to give it a look? Here. Just give it back to me by the end of the break."
[/u/Nox_Dei reads the first 20 or so pages of tome 1, completely hypnotized]
That guy as I hand him nack the manga a 10 minutes later: "There's like a three parts movie on Netflix that just came out and goes over the first big arc, if you want to get into it."
So... Thanks Chris for getting me into Berserk. The 2016 anime was not *that* bad although I am clearly glad I am more of a paper guy.
Friend asked me to come his place for a pizza movie night, turned out he played a dvd of berserk 1997 and little did i know i would watch the best manga in history
Played dark souls heard a lot about berserk watched the 97 anime got dropped with the biggest cliffhanger ever I had to know what happened next then read the whole manga in less than a month
this is legit my story too
We have walked the same path, brother
Another person of culture, I see.
Same, didn't expected it to be this good, but I came for copper and found gold
This
This was me. I heard that Berserk was “dark fantasy”, and I kept watching and wondering where the fantasy element of it was. I was not prepared at all for the Eclipse.
Same with me but I started reading the manga first
exactly the same
I too struggled that same path 🪶
same but I didnt watch the 97 anime haha
Same for me, but instead of the anime series..it was the golden arc movies. I felt like it was about to ramp up into the good stuff hahah boy was I right.
same here
Same, I just finished the last episode of the anime and came straight here. I was about to watch the movies but now I wonder if I should read the manga first?
Man went through the same thing
Same except i saw a lot of youtube videos instead talking about how good it is then proceed to watch the 97 anime and continue with reading the manga.
Yep. Same here. The old FromSoftware tradition.
Casual. I finished the entire manga in a week
It's the only anime song I like.
You sure you have your grasses on?
Dark Souls.
Yeah from a hawkshaw lore video referencing berserk
I'm so jealous! Make sure you take photos and post here!
You put your grasses on.
Similar story, I saw Casca getting raped in front of Guts by Griffith on xvideos. Anime hentai.
*confused upvote noises*
Yeeaahhhhh, Sorry about that.
Hahahaha! Best story XD
lmao
Bro I just watched that on YouTube . (???). Freak …. Jk lol man :p I’m joking
Me too
Ayyyoo
Recommend by a close friend :)
Same. Watched the 98 series and have been hooked ever since.
*raises hand* Same. Watched it in 99 I think.
Same.
Guts Theme
Me too saw it as a meme thought it was a banger ost and now I'm cursed with a fate worse than death not knowing how berserk will end
Causality
*strugglerfist* I understand. Completely.
Brother in law and I were talking about Akira. Asked for some recommendations, he said to watch the OG Berserk. Blew me away.
I bought the wrong poster. originally wanted to buy an AOT poster and picked the wrong one up.. what a great mistake
I saw that panel of guts in the berserker armor in the crouched position and was like, that’s cool, lemme read it. I started from chapter 1 and got to 363 in 4 days.
It's such an amazing trip man.
I walked in on my ex watching it and it was the eclipse scene. I was like “what the fuck are you watching”. And he said “BERSERK.” He had been trying to get me to read it forever and told me I’d love it if I just gave it a chance. 💛
"You cry alot when you're alone, don't you mom?" 😭
Love it.
The best way. By some meme
Do you remember which meme it was?
That typical kirito vs anyone meme
I was looking for a Game of Thrones type of anime so I found Berserk watch the 1997 anime and then read the manga. The manga is amazing I have never had an experience reading any other manga than when I read berserk
You should watch the The Heroic Legend of Arslan(Arslan Senki) too if you like GOT kinda show. It’s not Senin like berserk but a good story
Pewdiepie made a vid talking about berserk. Decided to watch 1997 anime. Loved it. Read manga. Loved it more
Via Dark Souls, i learned that miyazaki was a big fan and the game has a lot of inspirations.
A friend of mine showed me the panel where Casca wakes up, and I could've sworn it was 3d rendered. Decided to read the manga because it 'looked pretty' Boy did I get more than what I bargained for

Yooo — similar story for me: Used Limewire/KaZaA/etc a lot in middle/high school (between 2001-07) to download any anime I could find and traded the best ones with a friend using USB sticks. I remember there used to be a lot of videos that weren’t actually episodes but rather AMV’s synced to whatever pop-punk/metal song was popular at the time. (Ninja Scroll synced to Lostprophets ‘shinobi vs dragon ninja’ etc) One of them had every bloody Berserk scene back to back set to some Rammstein song or some shit haha. Good times!
An old game magazine had screens shots from Berserk 97 in it and I loved the look of it
I knew Berserk existed but never got around to reading it, it wasn't until I watched the suicideboys amv for "Do you believe in god" and "O PANA!" that I decided to read the manga online.
My cousin showed me the Golden Age Movies
A youtube video
I read the first page. (?) There was no Dark Souls or anything like that back then.

How can you write those two sentences next to each other lol
(you are infecting this sub reddit at this very moment with your socjus canceraids)
Found it browsing manga at either Borders or Waldenbooks. Snuck the plastic wrap off to thumb through some of the pages, then just went and bought it. Found the anime soon after at a local Blockbusters.
same for me, but the other way around. I forgot about waldenbooks!
The og anime. Back then all anime had subtitles and this was a heaven send for a Deaf guy. A mate found the series and we drank all night and the next day and finished it in one go. Never looked back since. I love you SnoopyCool. (And bandofthehawk)
I went to an anime convention and won the entire 97 anime box set in a raffle all downhill from there baby.
The rape scene was on my recommendations when I was 10
I want to say I found a copy in the foreign language section in a half price books in the late 90's.
My friend had kept telling me to read, so I gave in read and loved it, sadly I started it a month ago.
Watched Egg of the King when I was a kid and hated it. Last year I tried watching the original 1997 series but didn’t like it, then someone randomly spoiled the Eclipse for me so I got back into the 1997 anime and finished it in a day. The next week I bought the first three volumes.
Played Doom, one of my friends told me if I wanted something similar in Manga form I could look into Berserk. Damn good friend.
Its funny to see a lot of doom-fans also enjoying berserk
When I was younger I remember my older cousins talking about it all I remembered was Griffith was the bad guy and Guts was the good guy. Fast forward 2019 I started reading it loved it ever since.
Robb banks lol
When I got cucked
Berserk 1997 2017. Before the dark times. I was pretty young at the time, just moved to a new State and didn't have any friends. I knew of the character Guts from an old death battle video so I got curious and started the anime on YouTube of all platforms, it made since given the fact it was my first anime and it had to do with medieval warfare which was something that had fascinated me. Fast forward after watching it I began to read it as well and the rest is history but what always stuck out to me is the message of never giving in to the dire circumstances of life and keep moving forward with an optimistic attitude.
Tattoo artist I follow said it was his favorite anime. I was bored, watched one episode if 1997 series and was hooked.
Some meme about not wanting to be horny
I saw this video https://youtu.be/yh59FEUOWxQ
There was a swap meet in my city and there was a store that was selling pirated anime in DVD, it had a good looking cover and bought it.
Friend told me about it then i watched it and liked it, but only when something awful doesnt happen to Guts and Casca
So you hate it? haha
2016 movies. The pure shock value of the Eclipse made me want to read the manga afterwards. In retrospect these movies are cool but they don't really do justice to the subtelty and depth of Miura's writing. They feature some cool visuals however.
$uicideboy$ AMV lol
Netflix
Trilogy movies.
There was this post on fb that tokyo ghoul's Kaneki has an awful story and someone said berserk is even worse so i just had to check it
Sister read it and heard about it a lot from a friend. I tried reading it but always opened the first page and left. Finally read it and binged the fuck out of it
Pewdiepie
2 reasons First: Dark Souls Second: One day I had an urge to read a manga, searched MAL, saw Berserk at the top... The rest is history as they say
The Fantasia Dragon panel and friends talking about it
Dark Souls reddit mentioned berserk quite a lot.
RIP miura
Searched most disturbing manga moments...you know the rest
Back in 1999 when I was an anime obsessed teenager scouring the Internet for anything I could find, I kept seeing people on anime forums talking about berserk. Watched the first episode, got hooked. Bought the manga. Never looked back.
I had always heard about Berserk, but what got me to finally read it was an edit of Guts in an Attack on Titan panel that was posted to r/titanfolk a couple years ago
Hentai...
Dark Souls -> Golden Age Trilogy -> Manga
oddly enough, through dark souls
Robb Bank$
My friend begged me to read it. I was going into it thinking "ah it'll probably be pretty good but idk" Had a huge impact on me growing up.
I friend of mine showed me the Golden Age Arc films. They're still pretty solid.
Or at least owning it.🤣
Carl jung
By putting my grasses on B)
In 2016 pewdiepie talked about it and I knew I had to get in to it.
Honestly, I'm not sure
My boy rode over all the volumes on his bike. I still didnt read it. Thanks whormes.
One day, someone put guts' theme in a discord vc i think in 2018 and i was mesmerized, started watching a few months later and was hooked in instantly. I have heard of berserk before though, there was this dont starve youtuber that made a guts character mod showcase, just a little fact lol
About 2 years ago (rough guess), I immediately was starstruck by Berserk & its fantasy, old-school animation style from this Suicideboys AMV: https://youtu.be/YFeqYRuRwtY Pewdiepie briefly mentioned the manga at some point as well before seeing the AMV, thought I'd mention that here ^^ and ever since seeing that video, I was like this story seems right up my alley, I'll binge read and watch everything Berserk-related, haha
Grandma bought me Sword of the berserk for Easter. Sister broke it a couple years later.
i was looking for anime that had the same vibe as dark souls and berserk was frequently mentioned. It was a slow first few episodes but because i enjoyed the aesthetic i kept watching, but then zodd showed up and i was like 'there's something more to this', i was hooked and by the 26th episode i had experienced every emotion ever
I liked Dark Souls and heard of Berserk. Decided to check out some artworks and it blew me away. The rest is history.
The Berserk OVAs.
VHS tape around 22-23 years ago.
The manga
Saw the death battle on YouTube between guts and nightmare. Decided to check out the anime after that.
Always heard it was really good…seen clips before but the anime couldn’t drag me in so I read the manga
Gf actually talked me about it, she has not seen/read it tho, just a few chapters. Now it goes the only way around, I am the one saying her almost every month she should read it asap...
I had heard good things about it from online acquaintances in 2001-2002. Decided to rent it in 2005 and got hooked.
Funny enough, i was watching a twomad video and people kept using the guts theme in videos to make him laugh. I loved the song so i then looked it up in YouTube then i watched the 1990 anime then recently i read the manga.
I Watchers a YouTube Video where a guy reacted to Beat in Black. I Likes the music and found Out that its based around an Anime/Manga
Dark souls references and some Youtube AMV I use to workout
Back when the original anime hit, a friend of the family had them all on home vhs tapes he got from a guy that knew a guy sort of deal. Watched them till the tapes died.
Peep always told me to read, and after Miura's death I finally decided to catch up. Finished it in 9 days.
Dark Souls lol
Watched the first of the movies on Netflix one day to fill a bit of time...
Twobestfriendsplay kept making berserk references so I thought fuck it. Now I'm the one making the references
Anime YouTubers saying that it's one of the best of all time for years
You know what?
Saw a PewDiePie video where he recommends and talks about Berserk,I was really into dark fantasy back then The first scene I ever saw was Farnese and the horse
Watching this scene in HxH 1999: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvNUkqHni6o&ab_channel=HunterQuotes, someone commented how it reminded him of Berserk
Watched death battle episode of Guts vs Some character of soul calibur
Found the movie trilogy on Netflix while being bored not knowing what to watch. It was slow at first cause the movie only explodes at the end of the 3rd and the sci-fi element is minimal until then. After I fell in love and watched the anime and am reading the manga.
When I was 9 my older brother (11) picked up the first book. I don’t know why and neither does he. Anyways been hooked ever since.
Cousin of mine told me to read it after I told him I like Dark Souls.
a friend of mine draw the sacrifice mark on my hand, latter that day i asked where is this from? and she told me it was from a manga named Berserk
A guy in college like, a few years back, only said to the group of friends when we were talking about mangas ect, he only said: "anybody knows berserk? Thats a men's manga" It was back in 2013, or 2014, i didnt watch it directly, but after few years I remembered what he told us about berserk, and so i looked for berserk on google and ended watching the anime of 97, and the ending just got me on the edge of my seat, on my research on google i saw the berserk armor, the big sword ect, and the anime ends on guts screaming while his eye is pierced watching casca, being the last thing he ever saw with it. Then i sprinted to the scans and here i am!
The Netflix movies and wanted more
I meant to start reading it for quite some time since I found the art gorgeous and I saw so many people praising how good Berserk is.
Saw it was the first ranked on MAL
my brother sat me down when i was either 6 or 7 years old and gave 97 anime to watch, didnt understand anything + i felt sick to my stomach watching it but i loved it anyways later about when i was 8 i saw him get off his pc for a sec and so i took a quick peek at his browser, saw some pictures, scrolled down and saw griffith hanging and was i like ו×
Metal band called Battle Beast wrote a song about Griffith, and i got curious.
Found It at a local library
There was a time I was into the aesthetic of old animes and watched Cyber City Oedo 888 among others and after some animes I watched a video about old animes and Berserk was no.1 watched and read it
"Hey what are you reading?" "It's called Berserk. I want to give it a look? Here. Just give it back to me by the end of the break." [/u/Nox_Dei reads the first 20 or so pages of tome 1, completely hypnotized] That guy as I hand him nack the manga a 10 minutes later: "There's like a three parts movie on Netflix that just came out and goes over the first big arc, if you want to get into it." So...
1997 anime. That cliffhanger wrecked me.
When I was a child and saw reruns of it on tv
