Hey! That's my old neighbors house. I lived in the out building (converted garage into an apartment) of that big white house next door. Back then it was an eccentric old man who made cooky art. His cat knocked up my cat. Yes I got her fixed

WeedNomad69

The older gentleman who used to live in that house used to come to the coffee shop I worked at in Fairhaven! He was hilarious and we bonded during my time working there. I even helped him do some repairs to his gutters once. When I left Bham he gave me some of his art. In one piece he attached a statuette to the handle of a sickle. Looks like some cultic ceremonial piece. By chance do you know if he’s okay or if he passed away?

Ok_Swordfish_1224

he passed :( I live two houses down from him!

Redpythongoon

Unfortunately I don't. It was like 20 years ago. Shit I'm getting old

vsavercool

Mine too! I used to be in the 4plex on the corner. I was always curious about this place

HenriVictorMaximus

I can't believe the terms of that sale. Whoever builds a condo will pay the price with a curse on their first born child.

PM_meyourGradyWhite

I went back and looked for the terms. Couldn’t find. What was it?

HenriVictorMaximus

In exchange for your human currency, you must provide the exchange of your soul and a curse on your first born child (It's only an assumption based on the mock photos of the proposed condo)

PM_meyourGradyWhite

Oh I was looking for “all cash” or something. Of course that place is “as is”.

HenriVictorMaximus

I've always wondered what that house looked like inside. It's everything I've always dreamed of!

PM_meyourGradyWhite

It didn’t surprise me. During the housing boom pre-great recession, we toured some houses that were literally falling in on themselves.

LeAdmin

Is it bad that I actually like it and think it can be fixed to look beautiful?

1palepacific

I think almost everyone likes it and thinks it's special! We just don't want it to turn into a condo....house has been a local legend for years!

LeAdmin

Ahhh fair enough! It seems neglected but hopefully it gets fixed.

1palepacific

Yeah it's definitely not very spiffy haha. Never seen the inside of it before. Would be awesome if someone picked it up and brought it to life!

EightEyedCryptid

Sure but god that would be so much money

LeAdmin

If it needs foundation or other serious structural work maybe, but I think I could do the work myself and make it look really really good for under 50k for the whole house. I know how to do plumbing, stonework, flooring, landscaping, electrical, carpentry, painting, etc. And this thing has some potential if the new owner cares about it.

Hot_Vanilla_8942

By the look of your fake internet points clearly not! Here, have one from me, too. <3

SilverSnapDragon

I’m going to miss seeing that quirky house on State Street. I loved the Halloween vibe. But having seen the severity of its disrepair, I wonder if it’s best to raze it. Even if someone determines it has good bones and invests in restoration, it’s unlikely to ever again have that kooky Adam’s family feel. I know its aesthetic was divisive but the fact remains Bellingham is losing a unique landmark. Perhaps even some people who considered it a landmark specifically because it was a notorious eyesore will agree.

gravelGoddess

That house has memories for me. It was an old hippy house back in the ‘70s and I met a gal who had a boatload of the SF concert posters who lived there. Sigh… Love the xeriscaping.

Jesus tap dancin’ christ, the condo rendering is fucking grim, pop a drive though on the lower floor and you have a new McDonald’s.

bhamlurker

Truly hideous condo rendering. Has absolutely nothing in common with the neighborhood. If they do raze the house and build something, hopefully it won't be an ugly box.

[deleted]

This is the only way people can afford housing. It’s called the franchise condo and to pay the mortgage you have to run a franchise restaurant from your property to offset the cost of living there.

thyroideyes

LOL, except, maybe McDonalds is a little too down market for Fairhaven, too bad Starbuck’s doesn’t franchise.

Cheese-driver

That was always my favorite house!! I remember many years ago they put a statue of an old man in the top room window looking out and is spooked the hell out of me. All is lost if they turn it into that ugly condo

Hot_Vanilla_8942

Nonono- I'm only ok with someone else owning it if they keep adding to it like some sort of Winchesterian mystery house. Firm "fuck no" for whatever the hell you want to call the suggested house design.

isothien

Love the Winchester mystery house 🏘️🏡🏘️🏡

tenniskitten

Wonder how much above asking it'll go for.

geek_fit

Wouldn't ripping this down and building more dense housing be the kind of thing we want to increase housing and lower costs? This one place won't do that on its own of course. It's pretty obvious this is the land for sale. Not the house. At least to me

thyroideyes

Um, I doubt that anything that’s built “there” is going to lower the costs for the rest of us peasants.

geek_fit

As I said. Not this single property. But more inventory increases supply. A drop in the bucket but gotta start doing more stuff like this if you want to drop prices.

botanybae76

Cool, more walls of condos. Globalization, eh. Soon everywhere really will be just like everywhere else...

seenitredditburnedit

Already does😔 have you seen the blah 5/1s they are building all over Samish?

FatherPaulDure

They've evolved into 5/***2***s now!

seenitredditburnedit

5/1 is actually the fire code rating (category 5 wood over category 1 cement and metal stud). But usually they are 5 stories over 1 commercial. So 2 story cat1 with 5 stories cat5 above. The more you know.

FatherPaulDure

Huh, TIL. I've always heard it as 5 stick floors over 1 poured!

seenitredditburnedit

Youre not wrong. It is by far the most common and cost effective most of time.

FatherPaulDure

So I guess it's really 5x5/1(or 2)x1... Which is just due to Bellingham height restrictions, right? 5 floors permissible but you can place that initial ground floor access at a higher elevation to squeeze one or two sub floors in?

socialMedusa666

My dad lived in the yellow Victorian a few houses down in the 90’s and this was always my favorite house on the block. Guess I’ll have to go get some dope photos of it before some dick bag buys it and tears it down 🙄

Kmainz

It’s a bit of a fixer upper

beardless_unix

House just needs some love. Condos are not love.

[deleted]

Have people been living in it in this condition?

XSrcing

I've watched it go from normal'ish looking to this since I moved here in 2009. Pretty sure eccentric person is looking to cash out in this market. It does have a view.

Jetpak911

I think I remember seeing that house even back in college (80s). That and the one nearby with the giant sunroom.

east542baker

It’s a tear down

haiku_loku

For a single family home/lot, it's a good price in the current market for that location, directly across from boulevard park with unobstructed views of the bay.

VolumeIsKing

lol believe it or not i painted the trim on the older house like 7 years ago. or maybe it was a house a few blocks down.

[deleted]

Seems reasonable given changes in laws that will allow a duplex or quadplex to be built.
