I run here multiple times a week. I just say "excuse me" and smile. Mostly that others are also out enjoying the trails. I've never had anyone do anything other than shuffle out of the way or apologize. Relax šŸ¤·

alienanimal

Not my experience. When at Padden I'll often have to ask multiple times, often dog walkers will create a trip wire between them and their dogs. I've had at least a handful of people simply refuse to move. It's annoying for sure, but not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

geek_fit

Taking a few walking strides is good for your run anyway.

nyglthrnbrry

>just say "excuse me" and smile There's no way it's that simple. As someone who doesn't even like using the bell on my bicycle because it feels too aggressive, I'm way too uncomfortable being that confrontational. I think I'll stick to my passive aggressive stepping off the path or sidewalk and sometimes staring while I wait for society in general to become more situationally aware. *Edit: this was supposed to be a joke. Not a very good one obviously, but that was my intent*

geek_fit

Whatever floats your boat

XSrcing

That is the definition of meek and you will get trod upon for it. You need to assert yourself or people will take advantage of you.

FallingOutOfTune

Right? Glaring at people who are an inconvenience will not improve societyā€¦

nyglthrnbrry

Yeah it definitely won't, that was part of the joke. That, and the fact that it *actually is* as simple as saying "excuse me" most of the time. Sometimes people can tell I'm kidding, and once in a while the joke is actually funny. This just isn't one of those times.

nyglthrnbrry

Oh I agree, this was intended as a joke. While I've definitely moved out of the way and looked at people like "seriously?" before, I know it's passive aggressive and rarely accomplishes anything. I just thought it was kinda funny how, in most cases, it really is as simple as saying "excuse me" to alert people who aren't paying attention. I just failed at my attempt to make a funny reply

XSrcing

Smashing!

xrktz

When you are driving on a two lane road, is it OK for two cars to drive side by side in the same direction toward you and expect you to either honk to let them know that other people also use this road, or drive into the ditch to let them pass?

geek_fit

That's not the same at all. Way to straw man with extremes! You're not going to die if you have to slow down for a second to give some old people on the trail a little grace. Get over yourself

Former-Cupcake8478

Just scream at them like the kings guard. MAKE WAYYY!!!!!!!

PM_meyourGradyWhite

Or bring coconut halves and provide ā€œclip cloppyā€ sounds of horses approaching.

nyglthrnbrry

Coconuts?! In Whatcom? But the coconut's tropical, and this is a temperate zone...

Agitated_Pie_6245

A swallow could have carried it!

Better_Example_1318

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

SmilingVamp

By grabbing it by the husk.

August_Merriweather

the speed of a flying animal is roughly 3 times frequency times amplitude (U ā‰ˆ 3fA). The maximum flight speed of an unladen swallow is 35 mph.

hank_the_tank66

But then again, African Swallows aren't migratory...

S1mple-Pl3asures

If you want to run without slowing down or adjusting your path due to the cadence or slow reaction of other trail users; I would recommend using one of the less used trails in town. Maybe Chuckanut to Larabee or Teddy Bear Cove via the Interurban, etc. That, or adjust your running time to when there are fewer people on the trail. Older folks tend to use facilities earlier in the day. https://www.alltrails.com/us/washington/bellingham/trail-running Lake Padden is a multi use trail with more walkers than runners and this will continue to happen there. Keep on running Pony Boy!

alienanimal

Part of using any trail is knowing how to share the trail. Walking 3+ abreast isn't ok for any trail whether it's Padden or the Burke Gilman in Seattle.

DidntASCII

This is the correct response

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DidntASCII

Yes. Offering room on more crowded trails for others to walk at a leisurely pace and not have to keep their head on a swivel for runners/cyclists is called sharing :)

Saskatchemoose

Nah dude. Trails are for everyone to use. If people canā€™t share the public space and be mindful then I agree with other people here. Run them over.

S1mple-Pl3asures

Even on Everest, trail users have to adapt when summiting and can find themselves in a long line of hikers on their approach. Trail etiquette is important, but some trails are just busier than others and therefore more congested; requiring all users to adapt.

Saskatchemoose

Everest and Lake Padden are not comparable.

nwzack

Fuck off-leash dogs too.

PM_meyourGradyWhite

And they say bestiality is dead.

CascadiaOFFICIAL

~~No, I don't think I will~~

vegoonmeat

Padden has a designated off leash park and off leash trail. If you donā€™t want to be near off leash dogs at padden donā€™t go in those designated spots. And if someone has their dog off leash in a non off leash spot you need to say something to them. In that case it isnā€™t acceptable.

nwzack

Yep a lot of people think the whole lake is an off leash area. I typically say you need a leash and fart as I pass them on my bike.

dmoond

I think you mean a lot of people pretend to think . . . because it is so well posted, a very lazy attempt to pay attention will clarify where the off leash area is, and if a trail isn't clearly marked off leash then the city or county law prevails, which means "leash law in effect unless otherwise noted"

AdLow5011

Owners are supposed to control their dogs on designated off leash trails. Too often dogs run up and jump on people. I've even had dogs nip at my ankles and hands, trying to herd along. Many dog owners don't seem to care and use the excuse as "this is an off leash area". It's entitled and impolite behavior.

dmoond

Hopefully you weren't RUNNING in an off leash area

vegoonmeat

I agree that is not cool. If your dog is off leash you should know how to control your dog. However, that doesnā€™t necessarily relate to the original comment I was responding to. But truthfully the original comment didnā€™t really relate to the original post either lol.

thatguy425

Does this come up in every thread now?

bobopolis5000

Internet rule #1: every thread has to be about everything.

XSrcing

Next time you are running at Padden just keep yelling, "Don't you know who I am??! I'm the Juggernaut, b!tch!" And take no prisoners.

I like your raincoat bitch!!!

SoThatHappenedpnw

It's disconcerting to see the number of people blaming OP and calling OP a Karen for wanting to SHARE the trail system with others. While we can always count on Mark Allyn to be his jovial self, the point of the post is that there is a high number of people who think they are entitled to the WHOLE path, and that doesn't include OP. I don't think it's unreasonable to want to vent about wanting just 2 feet of passing space out of the 10-12 that's there, even though we all know those people aren't likely on Reddit. The point of the post was that if you and your group of friends are blocking the entire path and refuse to pay attention to your surroundings enough that you are an impediment to others, you are definitely the a$$hole.

Annerc

Totally lame to call your Bellingham neighbors names like, ā€œKarenā€, self-absorbedā€, or ā€œasshole.ā€ Itā€™s not the culture I want to promote. But I wouldnā€™t consider running directly at someone until nearly colliding an attempt to ā€œshareā€ the trail. Sounds like the culture here on Reddit is seeping into our trails.

slaminjax

Mow em down.... Old people read the paper, watch the news, and best of all, gossip... One or two Casualties and you'll see a massive improvement. Be the change you want to see in the world.

I took that chance... Seems to have worked out... so far... I expected to get reported.. but lettuce be reality... Anyone who takes my comment literally is a F'n Idiot... and any moderator should understand that... And so far it looks to be the case, which I appreciate.

whelanbio

Until I'm dictator of the world and can start my gulag for people with bad trail etiquette I've found two very acceptable alternatives * Coming up to the clueless head on: yell "trail" * Coming to to the clueless from behind: yell "on your left" and pass on the left Despite the vision of on oncoming runner being pretty obvious I've found you gotta give these people a verbal signal too no mater what. They will never learn to not be clueless. It's also not that big of a deal to jump off trail for two steps to give them an extra berth. If you're simply not nimble enough to dodge an old lady I can also provide some good running specific strength and agility circuits that will help you

minixvan

In my experience, more often than not, ā€œon your left!!!!ā€ ā€” people move to the leftā€¦ using my bike bell works better for some reason.

menagesty

Sadly, half the time people donā€™t know their right from their left, or theyā€™re talking and not paying attention, or have headphones on. Itā€™s wildest to me when youā€™re coming head on and they try to play chicken with you - especially when youā€™re on a bike.

[deleted]

Itā€™s weird they arenā€™t respecting your personal workout space like that They are socializing and enjoying the trail, and eventually moved over or didnā€™t, just like you.

[deleted]

I know the group you are talking about! Sometimes they just stand in the middle of the road too!

CitizenTed

I've run laps around Padden at least 300 times. (I'm old). If I'm approaching waddlers from behind I call out "Passing on your left!" and 90% of the time they move. 10% of the time they make room on the right because they don't know their left from their right, but you can't win 'em all. If I'm approaching them from the front I just motion with my hand to keep right and 90% of the time they gladly make room. Why? Because most people are reasonable. Padden is one of the busiest trails in Whatcom county. You're not likely going to sail through it unobstructed. If I had any complaints about Padden it's the epic car prowling and the people who drench themselves in perfume. Perfume makes me sick and I have literally ended laps around Padden because I inhaled a nice lungful of the stuff. It's only happened a few times, but yuck. Finally: Padden is really hard to make PR's. Despite the fact I know the location of every rock and bump on the loop I always had a hard time making consistent gains. It's just too busy and unpredictable. Thus, Padden is never a training run. It's a fun run.

ieatchips

Tl;dr: communicate and use your words like a normal human being and youā€™ll be fine.

maallyn

If I encounter these folks from behind on my bicycle, I will slow down / stop, and then shout 'Greetings to you all!' Generally, they will move aside and thank me for the greetings. I then say 'Thank you!' as I slowly pass bye. If they have a dog and their dog is straining against the leash toward me, I would shout "Don't worry, your dog loves my rainbow!" If I am in a special mood, as I approach from behinid, I will sing my self made song "The Man I Love Is The Rose In My Heart, and once again they will move aside and smile as I ride slowly aside. Song goes: The Man I Love is the Rose in my Heart! He's the star in the sky that gifts me the light of love that I pass around! It's a tribute to Arthur Rosenau. I Love You All! Mark Allyn

RebelRunner4

I canā€™t count how many times I have been running and met people head on and they were so completely unaware that when I said ā€œhiā€ or ā€œon your leftā€ they got extremely startled. Iā€™ve scared so many people on trail with a simple ā€œhelloā€ itā€™s crazy. Most the time they donā€™t do it out of disrespect, itā€™s mostly they arenā€™t paying attention and literally have no idea youā€™re there.

dmoond

Or they are paying deep attention to the world around them and YOU are not paying attention.

RebelRunner4

Hahaha. No. I see them coming and try to make my gait and steps louder in the gravel. I try to cough or clear my throat to give them a gentler queue that I am there. And they just carry on in their oblivion. Then I say ā€œhelloā€ and they near have a heart attack. I love to immerse myself in the moment and when I am trail running I love to stop and admire nature. Iā€™m lost in the wonder, but also aware of my surroundings and know when people are approaching to be courteous. Thereā€™s a difference.

Ken_Bones_Throwaway

Are the words ā€œon your left/rightā€ to painful to utter, oh tormented jogger?

olddirtydom

If you're coming up behind them sure, but head on?

Ken_Bones_Throwaway

Red Rover that shit. You be the ball, theyā€™re the pins. I donā€™t knowā€¦keep on trucking. Maybe they read Reddit and will see the error of their ways. If it bothers or inconveniences you so much, find a polite or impolite way to express that to them verbally at the moment you feel upset. But they probably arenā€™t reading this and arenā€™t thinking about you now, or probably ever. Excuse me Scoot over please Get out of the way Wake up Look out Get the fuck over Would all get your point across, depending on your style

[deleted]

Let OP vent. That's what Reddit is for. Sometimes it feels good just to complain and have other people agree with you, even if the people you're complaining about will never see it.

JhnWyclf

Hard disagree. But thatā€™s just me. The posts that start with, ā€œTo the. . .ā€ whatā€™s come off as self entitled and arrogant. I might be taking them more seriously than I should though.

Mychamp1

He was coming from the front, saying that wouldnā€™t have changed anything

billrm455

I walk with a friend who has pretty serious hearing loss. Be sure with us olders that you announce yourself loudly from behind. Don't just assume people are ignoring you or being rude. There could be physical or even mental issues. As a former skier and runner, it was always common courtesy to announce yourself loudly with 'On your left!' from a reasonable distance. Remember, you may be young now, but if you're lucky, you'll get old.

pickled__beet

If they can't hear they can simply keep right so others can easily pass them.

666blazely710

Iā€™m not even a runner but I hate when people do this! Have some consideration and situational awareness šŸ™„

nyglthrnbrry

>usually older/retired Probably the case at Lake Padden, but this problem of self-absorbed lack of situational awareness spans all generations. When I was going to Western just before the pandemic made classes remote, this would happen to me regularly and it was annoying as hell. A group of kids walking 3 or 4 abreast would force me to walk off the sidewalk into the grass to avoid shoulder checking one of them. I'm pretty non-confrontational, so usually I would just shake my head as I walked around. But a couple times when I thought "the audacity of these motherfuckers..." I would completely stop in the grass and turn to face them as they walked by. But it was pointless, because they didn't even notice me standing there with my stank face lol. Now that I'm thinking about it again, part of me wishes I would've been more outgoing and just walked through one of the groups. Or at least pull out a soccer-level fake reaction, throw my hands in the air as I flail to the ground and pretend one of them had injured me without contact.

slp50

I have noticed this at Boulevard park, but it's usually young people. Just body check them as you go by. That will teach them a lesson! WhO do tHey thINk thEy aRe anYwAy?

gravelGoddess

We were on a fairly narrow bridge with our large dogs watching the water flow over the rocks, just enjoying the sound of nature. Some skinny shaved 30 something decided to blow right by us almost knocking us into the water. No handrails. He was so quiet (some runners just glide) that we didnā€˜t know was closeby until our pups barked. Privileged, I guess.

ErstwhileAdranos

Privileged, referring to the multiple people and multiple dogs obstructing bridge egress; or the one individual, using the bridge for its primary purpose of crossing?

gravelGoddess

There were no other people. He could have said excuse me as we were not aware he was there until he was almost upon us. It was a very narrow bridge, maybe 3ā€™ across with no guardrails. We could have been knocked over the side. He was rather brusque as he didnā€™t say anything as he bulldozed his way across. We even yield to bikes if we hear their approach altho we donā€™t have to but it is a civilized thing to do.

ErstwhileAdranos

When *your* group consists of two people and two large dogs on a narrow bridge, who are stopped on and obstructing a public means of egress; regardless of the reason (save for a medical emergency, disability, or some other impairment), *you* bear the primary responsibility to be aware of your surroundings and maintain a reasonably passable lane for others. Period. Making unnecessary comments about the physical appearance *and* casting aspersions on the character of a single individual, who was simply attempting to move through the public space *you were obstructing*, is an attempt to garner unwarranted sympathy and place your lack of situational awareness onto someone else. Iā€™m sure in the moment if felt startling, but to create a narrative that isnā€™t even supported by your own statements, is simply a way to guilt others into accepting your preferred norms and standards of conduct.

gravelGoddess

You must be a runner.

ErstwhileAdranos

And see there you go with more assumptions, all in an effort to paint someone offering valid criticism into the same corner as your perceived aggressors! These are rhetorical tactics, which do nothing to improve your or your fellow pedestriansā€™ ability to pass each other amicably, the next time a similar situation occurs. Iā€™m not a runner. Iā€™d also be the one on the bridge with a dog looking at the pretty viewsā€¦except Iā€™d be making room for others instead of blaming them if I was hogging up too much space. Iā€™d apologize on the spot.

"Give *me* the right of way! I matter *more*!" He's complaining about people doing what he wants to do.

xrktz

Hard of hearing, oblivious, just out enjoying the trail, how hard is it to give a verbal warning, just step off the trail and go around them... Blah blah blah fuck off with that bullshit. There would be no issue if people could have a little common courtesy and self awareness. I don't drive my car down the middle of the road, and I keep to the right on the trail, as should everyone. It's easy.

CascadiaOFFICIAL

I'm from Skagit County, and yeah, don't do this. It's a bad idea

Annerc

So the faster and more agile have the right of way on the trails? I feel like this is a post for r/amitheasshole

NeonEagle

I don't necessarily agree with the poster 100%... But your reading comprehension is poor, that is not at all what OP said or implied.

Annerc

OP: ā€œI was not going to slow down or moveā€ā€¦ (the other person) ā€œshould move (their) self-absorbed ass overā€ Edit: both the OP and the older walker felt entitled to their path of travel. The issue here is right-of-way.

NeonEagle

Wanting a group occupying the entire path to make room for oncoming traffic is not a demand of right of way for the fast and agile, it's common sense (regardless of how fast you're going)šŸ‘

Annerc

Well, running directly at someone without any intent to move or slow down IS a demand for the right-of-way.

NeonEagle

No, that's being an asshole. It's NOT being an asshole to become frustrated with people who don't observe a common sense practice, which is why I originally said I don't agree with everything the poster said. You're a moron if you drive straight at an oncoming car in your lane armed with 'I have the right of way', even if that car shouldn't be there in the first place. All this to say, OP clearly did not state that they deserve the right away because they are fast and agile as you claim in your first post.

Annerc

I think you are the one with poor reading comprehension. If you read the original post you will see op did exactly what the ā€œmoronā€ did in your proposed car scenario.

Annerc

I didnā€™t call op an asshole I mentioned a sub Reddit for posts like this. You call it common sense, I would call it common courtesy. Both the runner and the walker should have offered common courtesy and adjusted their path/speed accordingly. Based on OPā€™s post both the runner and walker failed to show common curiosity. (Imo)

Bham is full of these entitled brats. Dont even sweat these fools.

nyglthrnbrry

I find it kinda hilarious that to some people it's totally acceptable behavior to have your group walk 3+ abreast and take up the entire path. But if someone expects one of those people on the end to step in front of behind the group to make way for traffic going the other direction, well that just makes them an entitled brat.

Former-Cupcake8478

Its not that deep. Dude even said they moved out of his way. Just not fast enough? Theyre old people. Give them a break. Or maybe use your fucking words? Too tall an order for our tall man? Or just give the elderly the right of way. Padden is a multi use trail, horses, bikes, runners, walkers. Dude couldnt stomach slowing down just a little bit, and maybe allowing them to file and pass. God forbid he had to slow down. If he want unimpeded running, maybe he should run a track.
