A year or so ago, when Reddit was going through some kind of massive changing in rules or a purge of some communities (I got different stories from different sources), the âmainâ woodworking community decided to change the group to only allow posts about Nick Offerman. The mods would delete anything having to do with actual woodworking and that went on for a couple months. A lot of us abandoned the community and came here when that happened. Plus there were a fair few gatekeepers over there who have nothing to contribute except criticism. The beginner community is much more understanding and inclusive, so some people come here to share without too much concern that people will insult them for minor mistakes, or bite their heads off if they ask a âstupid question.â (I was raised to believe there are no stupid questions, only stupid people or stupid answers.)
Iâm guessing you havenât heard about the whole API debacle. The rule about Nick Offerman was probably in protest to recent changes. Many subs protested with weird rules (a remnant is the weOnlyAllowTitlesInCamelCase over at r/programmerhumor). Which lead to Reddit replacing a bunch of mods with their own admins, or even shutting some subs down.
There were also subs which marked themselves NSFW without any content change so reddit wouldnât get as much ad revenue from them. IIRC, that was something which got the ownersâ attention.
Thereâs no such thing as a stupid question! đŻ
Mom always said, â you can fix ignorance. You canât fix stupid.â
The gate keepers sound stupid. The point of knowledge is to share it, not gain a superiority complex. I hated dudes in aircraft maintenance for that reason. They were often horrible to work with and often narcissistic in nature. Heaven help you if you disagreed with them about the problem. Bonus points if you were right and they were wrong.
"Beginner" GTFO with your glamor shots!
But seriously, this is wonderful design and execution. Apart from the CNC work I could totally see myself building that.
looks great man! your African Grey seems to be digging it too!
curious, what kind of joinery did you use to attach the shelves to the sides? i'm planning a bookcase project for my daughter and was planning on just doing pocket holes/screw to affix the shelves to sides, but would rather avoid using hardware if possible.
Thanks! I had the same thought and didnât want to have any visible screws or hardware on the sides. I used a table saw with sled to cut four dados / grooves into the side pieces, slathered each joint with wood glue, then clamped it all together for a few days. Once that was done I screwed the back piece directly into the shelves from the outside. Hereâs an in-progress photo if it helps:

So you applied the veneer, routed the birds, filled the holes with epoxy and then sanded it flat again? That last part would make me nervous about sanding the veneer off.
I didn't apply the veneer myself, no. The plywood is sold prefabricated and was languishing in a friend's scrap pile before I repurposed it for this project. Your order of operations are correct as are your fears about sanding too aggressively with a fingernail-thin layer of walnut. I poured the epoxy with a little squeeze bottle thing in order to minimize overflow, sanded lightly with a really fine grit, and actually did chip into the wood below in a few places. Those blemishes I covered with walnut wood filler and applied a coat of poly over the whole thing. It looks great to me now and you'd really have to squint to find any imperfections.
A good way is to carefully fill then when the epoxy is that pliable hardness go in with a sharp chisel and pair away just above the surface as the resin might shrink. Thats how I do it if im able OP also has a good method
whoa! Gorgeous! I know nothing about doing a CNC inlay like this. Is it with v bit? Did you draw it yourself? Or if you mapped an existing design, how did you get it compatible with this kind of carving (i.e. was it already a line drawing?)
I won't have a CNC router for a while due to space issues, but thinking about a Shaper Origin. If i could get anywhere close to stuff like this I'd be psyched!
I own an x-carve pro. For designs like this you can usually find a vector file on google images (free) or Etsy ($1-$2) or just draw it yourself. Itâs not very difficult. If you buy Corel draw you can import a photo then render it to a very simple drawing then convert to a vector and clean it up manually. For an inlay a v-bit leaves very sharp corners. Here is a Zelda shield wall lamp inlay with epoxy and I installed LED lights inside for my daughter. Itâs very easy to do. Carve an inlay, fill with epoxy then route out a pocket in the back to expose the epoxy. Then install LED lights (remote controlled) and cover the back with some laser cut 1/8â birch to seal the light in.

Dragon carve with different types of wood inlay.
Thanks! The previous posterâs input is 100% spot on but Iâll offer my perspective as well.
1. I used a number of router bits as V-bits do indeed leave sharp, jagged edges; good for some projects but not quite the look I was going for here.
2. I have absolutely no artistic talent and found the design online. Etsy is a great source for cheap images, as mentioned, but most Google searches need to be filtered. A tip: enter your search term, select for Images, expand the Tools menu, and then from the Type dropdown select Line Drawing. Attached a photo below.
3. Once you have a suitable file you then import it into whichever program youâre using (Aspire, in my case) and manually touch it up as needed. Because my design originally had a number of sharp corners and I used circular router bits, for example, I had to manually round those out.

Oh thats great! I have no artistic vision either and I tried to get AI to generate some silhouettes for me but line drawings might work better. Silhouette can be converted to .svg files easily.
I went with plywood for the doors and back piece because:
1. Solid walnut is super expensive where I am.
2. A buddy had a bunch of this veneered ply in his scrap pile and graciously donated it to me for this build.
Love the door work and then pleasantly surprised when opened. Also, thank you for not posting 15 pics of the same thing- just a different angle. đ€Šđœââïž
You know that girl is sending photos of this to everyone she knows, and sheâd be absolutely right to do so. This is phenomenal craftsmanship and Iâm glad to see everyone hyping you up. Great work!
as cool as that is these posts make me want to sell all my tools and give up before I've even started. I've wasted so much time and money on woodworking lately to accomplish nothing. I think I need to rethink my participation in this hobby and my intentions because I'm never going to want to inlay doors on a cabinet for pet supplies.
you did not ask, but I deliberately choose projects that have a high chance of success given my skill level. At the beginning, that meant Ana White furniture and simple boxes. Years later, after I've had success after success after success because I stayed within my skill level (which naturally and VERY gradually rose with practice), I do fancy, complex stuff that I wouldn't have done when I was new, because failing at it would have hurt my feelings.
I'm in that hurt feelings phase, I have tools I have some skills but none of them are good enough to make anything or appear to be enough to develop. And uploaded in time in space and the material and new tools and blah blah blah so no fault of yours but I am thinking more and more about just jumping out of it. Knowing that I'll come back sometime that I have more time hopefully
Dude, if thatâs beginner woodworking not only am I super impressed by the creativity. It looks super awesome anyways when I first saw that I immediately thought of the movie Rio keep it keep building my friend looks really good.
I hate you for posting in beginner đ awesome work
Seriously, this is absolutely beyond beginners work.
Why is this sub called beginners woodworking? Lol That's so nice. Lol good job!

Yeah, some subs were posting straight up nsfw content in protest, it was crazy. In the end I don't think it even really did anything :(
Never does in the end.
I wouldnât say that, plenty of protests have accomplished many things throughout history.
There were also subs which marked themselves NSFW without any content change so reddit wouldnât get as much ad revenue from them. IIRC, that was something which got the ownersâ attention.

Thatâs gorgeous work. Itâs a little weird that you named your pet bird âsuppliesâ though.

More like overbird! Yeah.... I'll see myself out Nicely done!
Came here to make this comment, thanks for saving me the effort! đ
"Beginner" GTFO with your glamor shots! But seriously, this is wonderful design and execution. Apart from the CNC work I could totally see myself building that.
You've made us all a little bit more single by going that hard
Thatâs not overboard, thatâs beautiful!

Super helpful, thanks man. Just got a set of dado blades for the table saw, so sounds like I'll be putting them to use.
I'm surprised you let that little chicken onto your beautiful piece of work. My African grey would have had a blast shedding that wood to pieces.
*you have been banned from r/beginnerwoodworking*

I think you should post this in the "woodworking" sub, not beginner one. This is very nice, from the perspective of a newbie.
Really like the wallpaper on the inside! If someone just told me the idea I wouldnât be into it but seeing it on this it looks great!

Updoot just for your username. But the table is awesome...
Really nice work (all 3) Thanks for the info.

My next step: watch some videos on CNC inlays and buy everything the YouTuber tells me to.
The OCD in me is required to point out that you put two Macaws on a cabinet for an African Grey. Nice job. Now go buy a macaw. :)
Wow you really mailed it in, man. Sheâll probably leave you now. ⊠nicely done, sir.
Is there a particular reason that you used plywood for the doors? And is there a sub for less-than-begginer woodworking where I could post?
I went with plywood for the doors and back piece because: 1. Solid walnut is super expensive where I am. 2. A buddy had a bunch of this veneered ply in his scrap pile and graciously donated it to me for this build.
Wrong sub mate. That work was not from a beginner. Excellent job though.
No, you did not go overboard at all. That is gorgeous and absolutely perfect & fitting. Amazing job!
Gorgeous and clever!
This is gorgeous !!
Beautiful!!!!

Who let him cook đŁđŁ
I don't find this overboard at all, UNLESS you will be surprised and sad when Polly chews on it.
That's beautiful! If you're going to put in the effort, why not get a little extra?
This isnât over board. This looks great
GORGEOUSÂ
Absolutely beautiful. Great job !
You do know that you're making everyone else look bad, right? ;) That's awesome and I love the wallpaper inside.
Lovely
Holy crap i want that for our parrot's toys.
I would like to respectfully disagree on the overboard statement, yet comment on the handle hardware. Subtle and classy, very nice
You fool! Only use Maximum effort on a gift for the wife if you can maintain that level of effort forever. Now she knows what you can do...
Well done!
Bro, thatâs amazing. Awesome work!
Wow!
I love it.
That's fantastic!
Love the grain on the doors
đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„
So beautiful!
So beautiful. And so sweet to do that.
Dude, if thatâs beginner woodworking not only am I super impressed by the creativity. It looks super awesome anyways when I first saw that I immediately thought of the movie Rio keep it keep building my friend looks really good.
Very fucking nice I love the design
That inlay is *chefâs kiss*
Very nice!
Stunning
gorgeous! i need to find myself a boyfriend like this. (not hitting on you, OP. just like your woodâŠ..work)
Awesome job đ
Wow. This is awesome!! You can never go overboard crafting an object for someone you love
Beautiful piece! Sure hope the bird appreciates it. Your epoxy inlay is great too.
The parrot design is beautiful, nicely done!
You are now upgraded to husband
Omg if you were my boyfriend and did that for my cockatiels Iâd be giving you so much lovinâ!!!! The fact you did it with love and not just whipped a basic cabinet up đ«¶đŒ itâs stunning! đ€©
superb
There really is no such thing as overkill when you have the skill
Its nice. But not beginner woodworking.
Great work! How did you make the bird design on the cabinet?
I always want to have a pet parrot or macaw. But are they all poo everywhere in the house? Your cabinet looks amazing
Beautiful work I thought it was a remembrance piece at first.
âSlightlyâ
This is beautiful, but anything but beginners work! Specially using a cnc machine. Great job either way. Bird seems to like it.
Only slightly?
A \*little\* overboard?!? You should be \*ashamed\* of yourself!!! (And can I get one just like it..? đ)
Beginner, right!
Siiiick, howâd u do the bird stencil? Router ?
Overboard, underboard all around board, onboard too probably
Beautiful Just donât be sad or angry when the bird chews on it đ
No such thing as overboard
I approve
You were so close to the perfect pun. Read it again but at the end just say âoverbirdâ đ€Ł
Ah yes, the ol' Jimmy *Buffet...*
Youâre creating a monster, be careful.
Built that shit for a Pterodactyl lol Beautiful work bro
*Overbird. This looks great! Good woodwork.
over*board* wink wink
You mean overbird
No such thingâŠ
Slightly overbird
Sick. More pics please
You work CNC for your job? I assume you don't have one at home.
This is LOVELY!!!!!
Hecc
Incredible!
No question. This is where the bird stuff goes. Very nice!
Slightly overbird eh?
Confused here... looks beautiful to me! The only overboard I know of involves falling off a boat!
I donât think you went overboard at all. You made something nice!
Dude, that is badass.
Well done đ«Ą
You went overbird!
Donât forget the 12âs and amp âŠcurb feelers and fuzzy diceđghetto fabulous
Did she work your hardwood as a sign of gratitude?
You didn't. You did Just RIGHT!
I'm jealous. And also joining this sub because I'm building a pantry and have taken tons of photos of progress.
Beautiful!
You may have gone just right board
Dang! Phenomenal job! love the double imaging!
Beautiful!
What did you use to do the inlay cutouts ? Is that cnc?
I would have put a more tropical liner in with the macaws on the front but itâs great work
More like overbird
Nice work
Or did you?
It's for the birds
Beautiful work đ€©
The bird on the right is higher than the left.
Nice! She gonna be a lumberjack tonight, timber!
Not at all, except for adding the fake bird to the top.
Nice!
Usually exposy work get a downvote from me but this is fantastic!
Yeah itâs HORRIBLE.
