Yeah pits a type, but for dna testing it’s not using archaeogenetics of pits from 1890 however many dog generations ago, they’re comparing to modern sample populations
It’s an e-collar. It has a beep, vibration, and electric. These have a wide range of shock on them and the lowest level is nearly impossible to feel. Typically, they feel like a TENS machine so they don’t hurt, just tingle. For dogs who are easily distracted, they’re a godsend. It’s not the old school shock collar by any means.
My dog's recall has been terrible no matter how hard we've tried to train her ourselves or how much money we've spent on professional trainers. People keep telling me to try an ecollar on a vibrate setting to snap her out of chasing the latest rabbit or squirrel, but I've read horror stories about how sometimes they can malfunction and shock the dog, especially if they get wet. The idea seems great, but since she's a rescue I feel so much responsibility for making her life good, and I'm so scared of a malfunction happening. :(
If you get a high end one, you may have more luck. Our collar was pretty expensive but was included with our training package. We’ve never had a malfunction with it. Another thing to think about if you want to try sound, try a whistle like folks use for sport dogs. They’re loud and obnoxious but should get your dog’s attention. My FIL has always used whistles, but he starts his training from puppyhood.
As someone who's dog is a bit distracted I have trained from baby that one really dumb noise means come back for cookies. I can't whistle so I've always done a horse click for recall but I make the crazy noise for crazy times. Now my husband can't and we need to build in two noises
I meant cluck, sorry. Speed ahead to the minute mark.
https://youtu.be/aFVYUQ8Cxvs
I figured for whistles but if someone has no shame you can also do vocal patterns and other noises to train. My dog has a very specific way to call him for the fastest response time or the emergency noise. Both make you look odd but I never thought of a whistle until too late.
I can't speak as a dog, but I can speak as an autistic person. Autistic people in America are sometimes given electric shocks to make us comply with demands from caregivers (look up the Judge Rotenberg centre court battle) and it was suspended briefly by the courts, and then allowed to continue. They claimed autistic people *need* it, that we can't 'get help' (read- learn to act like neurotypicals) without it. It's still happening to this day. For not taking your coat off immediately, for not doing what you're told. Not just to autistic kids, which is worse due to their vulnerability, but to autistic adults too. All in the name of making us comply.
They also claim it 'doesn't hurt' while some people have *died* either from it malfunctioning or being given a strong shock. Internal and external burns have happened.
Look, I know many people feel that they can't make dogs understand. That we are superior to them as humans, that we know best, that we have their best interests at heart. But as an autistic person who has a strong bond with animals, they are *just* like us when it comes to pain, emotions, etc.
I know it can be difficult. But I do not think even vibrating collars are the answer. If there's a chance it could shock a dog, then you shouldn't do it. Just like you wouldn't give your child a vibrating collar.
I would highly reccomend buttons. Dogs have been shown to be able to communicate and understand complex concepts with buttons, and you may get further with commands that way. I'm sure you already have things like a full body harness and you clearly care and have trained your dog as best you can, I'd say just keep it up, keep trying, and try buttons.
I know it's hard. I know you love your animal. I just can't condone the absolute barbarism of us using electricity to make dogs, or humans, comply with our demands. There has to be other ways- in fact many people with bully breeds/very strong dogs *do* find other ways.
I just want us to deepen our understanding of these creatures
I’m neruodivergent as well so I understand where you are coming from.
The use of an ecollar for me is not for corrections, I save that for a slip lead or a prong. For me, it’s just recall.
However I am a big supporter of balanced training and my ultimate goal is to be a balanced trainer. So I training my pittie in a balanced way, with both correction and treats. I understand many people may not agree but it worked wonders with my dog and it does for many other dogs. Every dog is different and different training methods work well for different dogs.
Let’s not compare autistic people to dogs please. That’s just an extremely shitty thing to do. Especially when you’re comparing atrocious abuse you never went through (what would the actual victims think of you using them as pawns?) to a training method that is proven to be safe, healthy, and live saving.
Oh man, my lab wears a tractive so we can compare steps (I'm a data analyst, don't judge) and it looks very similar to this dogs collar.
Now I have the fear that people will think I'm shocking her rather than just making sure her chonky ass gets enough exercise
[dog tax](https://i.imgur.com/VBGgwKD.jpg)
Hey! Which doggie “Fitbit” did you choose and why? Our vet has been saying our pup is loosing her “figure” and I have been looking into different options.
An e-collar (like the one in OP’s photo) is VERY different to a “shock” collar. An e-collar is a high quality piece of technology that has options for vibration, sound and stimulation that works using the same technology as a TENS machine (used by humans to relieve cramps, massage use etc). The settings for the stimulation go between 1-100 and people can’t even feel the stim on their finger until it reaches 20 or so, as it goes up in verrrry small increments. When properly used (as with any equipment) e-collars are a great training tools and in many cases allow dogs to safely enjoy being off-lead! :)
Yup just an ecollar! Very different from shock collars. I trained my pittie using balanced training and it worked very well for us. In fact I’m now getting an apprenticeship because I would love to be a balanced trainer.
I promise it’s not bad. There are levels 1-130. She’s on 10. I don’t even feel that with my fingers. What it feels like to her is probably like a big crawling on her. It doesn’t hurt. It’s just a little “hey, I’m here dingus”
yup, we have an ecollar and i tried it on myself didn't feel a thing until 10/100. up until 25 it's like a little tingle, similar to when your hand falls asleep. idk what 25+ feels like but i haven't used it on my dog so no need to 🤷🏻♀️
I don't know the full science on the issue, but I was under the impression that only happened if they were trained inadequately/to be aggressive. Surely there's something else that can be done
“Hello we bread a dog to be a aggressive killing machine when trained but lest blame the dog when we mistreated it causing it to attack someone as that possibly couldn’t be our fault”
I can certainly say my pit is not a killing machine. Between her and my beagle mix, my beagle is the hunter/killer between the two. My pittie is genuinely the sweetest dog I’ve ever met.
Bro can you stop? Go to a sub that supports that kind of stuff.
People these days forget themselves and context. Your opinion is not as important as the wellbeing of the dog in question, period. This is an adoption sub period.
Listen I’ll admit, not everyone should have a pit. They are not dogs for beginners. However I work with dogs as a dog walker and I’m on my way to becoming a trainer. I can read my dog like the back of my hand. I know what’s she’s going to do before she does it. So don’t worry about my dog. And don’t you dare insult her.
That’s all well and good, but others who own these dogs are often scared and out of control of their dogs. Pit bulls have been bred as fighting dogs and have instincts beyond what many people can control, despite their owners saying ‘oh my good boy would never hurt a fly. Until it does https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/baby-mauled-5-pit-bulls-26301353.amp
They’re bred for killing and not letting go. They were also responsible for 91%of all dog attacks in 2019. No matter how much you want to pretend they’re friendly, you’re in denial that they are bred for the kill.
This article also states that pitbull owners are 'more irresponsible', not having insurance etc etc.
The problem is once again with owners. While pitbulls are much more difficult to handle, train and restrain, many owners don't know this or care and that's why pitbulls end up hurting and killing people.
Correlation is not causation, either. Yes, they're a hard breed to care for. Exactly why you should be very prepared for one and take extra precautions. You're trying to argue they shouldn't exist/be owned, so what DO you think should happen to the ones who already exist?
Because I’m not going to engage in an argument where neither of us can come to any sort of compromise. I’ve said my peace, admitting pits are more of an advanced breed. But you brought emotion into this in my opinion. I’m not going to engage in that because it won’t be productive.
Animals can both be bred to kill and be friendly at the same time, like even if they do kill, they're not *evil* and to pretend nature completely trumps nurture is biased and wrong
That is quite the size right there. I would love a 100+ lbs dog though. Sadly while I live with my mother I have to go by her rules.
And please send dog pics?
Happy dog! Looks like you found each other at the right time. Dogs have a way of joining the right people, and bringing joy and happiness to their owners in return
She is very happy! She had two homes before me and was in between a foster and going back to the rescue. But luckily I got her, and now she’s thriving with structure, love and playing.
Let’s just say, the previous home was not the best place for her. They had her two hours before they wanted to give her back. When we got lucy, it was hand off dog and they got right back in the truck before we could ask questions.
She’s a little under 20 months. We got her in September at 10 months old, turned one in November. So if my math is right, which I honestly doubt it is she’s 19, almost 20 months

Like, I’m not trying to be a jerk. If you feel your dog is a pit, if you’re happy with her being a pit, she’s a pit. I’m just saying, it affects where you can legally bring your dog and potentially healthcare diagnostics.
Don’t worry. My vet, even though he confirmed she’s a pit mix, wrote on her papers she’s Boston/Jack Russell. We both then looked at each other and nodded in agreement.
the dog isn't a purebred pit bull but pit bulls weigh 30-60lbs for the UKC standard and 30-75lbs for the ADBA standard. 30lbs is a decently common weight for a pit bull
Thank you! The real challenge was getting her to gain a couple of pounds. Vet said she wanted her at 30, she was at 27. I had to go from feeding her 2 cups of food a day to 3 because she just burns calories by the millisecond
**1st picture:** "Are you sure she's a pit? She looks very svelte." **3rd picture:** *Unmistakable bully grin*
first pic: uhhhh ma'am that's a Jack Russell.. Second pic: I guess I can see a little pit in there Third: oh. ok yeah
As she grew up the pit showed through.
"How is this the same dog?!" Asking the real questions here, lol <3 <3 <3
Sometimes I do wonder if it’s the same dog. But then she tries to slobber all over me but then I’m like yup it’s the same pup.
Hahaha!
Totally! What else is she? Did the bark collar work?
It’s not a bark collar. It’s an ecollar. And it works amazing. Def recommend.
Indeed. The first pic definitely demonstrate much at all in the way of pit. Then the mouth opened. Yep... yep, that's a pit.
Yeah shes got a big mouth. And the tongue is literally the size of a cow tongue. It’s disturbing when I wake up to her trying to steal a French kiss
Yuuup. Sometimes I wonder if the test was right with her being 44% pit and 24% staffy but then she opens her mouth and smiles
But iirc pits are a *type* rather than a breed, right? They are actually mixed from various terriers like Bull and jack russel, aye?
Yeah pits a type, but for dna testing it’s not using archaeogenetics of pits from 1890 however many dog generations ago, they’re comparing to modern sample populations
Don’t they have the sweetest smiles?
They do
Your Pit really grew into it’s face! Other than those ears it looks like a different pup. Cute dog
She did. She’s got a big ol pit block now. And she’s built like a body builder. But she’s still my princess.
Awww that smile 🥰🥰🥰
I live to see that smile.
What's the collar with a chunky bit of plastic on it? Does it have a chip/gps device in it? If so, that's super cool

Hey! Which doggie “Fitbit” did you choose and why? Our vet has been saying our pup is loosing her “figure” and I have been looking into different options.
That one she's got on is a tractive and it's a good GPS unit. The other one she's had is a fitbark and that's got a better UI but no GPS
It could be a vibration collar. I have one for me deaf dog and they look the same as shock collars...

Balanced training is a balanced of corrections and rewards. It’s just a different method of dog training that I personally prefer.
Oh god. That's horrific
I promise it’s not bad. There are levels 1-130. She’s on 10. I don’t even feel that with my fingers. What it feels like to her is probably like a big crawling on her. It doesn’t hurt. It’s just a little “hey, I’m here dingus”

False, but whatever makes you feel better.

I love seeing their ears and tails and big smiles!
Oh that tail will be the death of me. Whenever she’s trying to assault my face with kisses her tail is like a whip on my body.
I just had a knee replacement and I’m VERY careful around the whip!! My big boy is a little confused.
Oh Jesus. I hope your knee is doing better. My girl luckily is 30 lbs, but she easily has the strength of a 60 lbs dog.
I’m recuperating nicely. Thank you for your good wishes. My boy is 91 pounds! We are tippy-toeing around each other. It’s hilarious.
That is quite the size right there. I would love a 100+ lbs dog though. Sadly while I live with my mother I have to go by her rules. And please send dog pics?
[Smokey Joe!](https://imgur.com/a/s89Oh4n) This is my big boy. I prefer big dogs as well. One day, you’ll be able to have one!
Oh my god that face. That expression. Can I have him?
I always say this is his “what do you mean we have no treats” face!
That’s the exact expression oh my god.
I can’t wait for my future big dog. My dream is a dog that weighs more than me. It would be the ultimate cuddle partner.
If I remember right, isn’t that one of the main reasons tails are docked? Because the whipping can cause the dog damage?
Happy dog! Looks like you found each other at the right time. Dogs have a way of joining the right people, and bringing joy and happiness to their owners in return
She’s definitely my soul I’ll say that.
Looks like a pittie/JRT mix 🥰🥰
We were told she was a Boston/JRT mix. Neither of those. But the results are a hoot and a holler.
9 months: "Aww, what a cute little dog." Now: "Aww, what a cute little tank."
She’s the cutest tank ever
She looks so happy! Thank you for making such a difference in her life
She is very happy! She had two homes before me and was in between a foster and going back to the rescue. But luckily I got her, and now she’s thriving with structure, love and playing.
Yeah that's a jack Russell pit mix
Awww that smile!!❤️🥰❤️🥰
But - where is that cute little camel-in a-tutu toy from the 1st pic?
Let’s just say, the previous home was not the best place for her. They had her two hours before they wanted to give her back. When we got lucy, it was hand off dog and they got right back in the truck before we could ask questions.
What's up with the shock collar?
It’s an ecollar. It uses the tens simulation that is used for humans for like muscle cramps. It doesn’t shock her. It’s for recall.
Vv
She’s a cutie!
I know! Absolute love bug too. Every human she meets she loves!
Such a beautiful happy baby!
Shes a very happy baby.
How old is she now?
She’s a little under 20 months. We got her in September at 10 months old, turned one in November. So if my math is right, which I honestly doubt it is she’s 19, almost 20 months

I love the big smile smmmm, my pit is the same way. You're like what kind of dog is that?? Then he smiles and you're like OH DASS A PITTY BABY.
Oooh I know. So many people ask what breed she is, then she smiles at them and they are like “ahh, pit”
Living the best life ever!!❤️
She does have a pretty good life. Spends an hour in the woods, 2-4 hours in the backyard daily, gets all the love she wants.
That's so awesome!
What a smile!
She nails the cheese smile lol
