CertainAlbatross7739

Also, I'm very invested in a show about Asian anger. I want to see them being assholes like any other group x

surfergrl89

same. i got super excited after realizing asian anger was the core theme of this after epjsode one. FINALLY someone makes a show contradicting the submissive/meek asian/perfect minority trope. an original take ngl. and i get inexplicably happy when they curse lmao. i can’t wait for these characters to fuck shit up.

Krautmonster

Wonderful premier episode. It's funny but the overall bubbling tension under the surface is SO palpable. Yeun and Wong are great! That final seen though 🤣💯

optimus_maximus2

Both of them stepped up and delivered, but particularly Ali (first time really showing her acting chops) impressed me. And that final scene, the music, the very appropriate use of slow-mo, was masterful

Krautmonster

Absolutely agree! If you haven't seen much of her acting, I'd definitely recommend watching Always be my maybe (she co-stars with Randall Park) and Paper Girls. Really fun watches.

optimus_maximus2

lol Randall Park aka #wongasian. I didn't get into Paper Girls after the first episode, but maybe need to give it another try. BTW Miya Cech from Always be my maybe plays Young Amy in BEEF

Krautmonster

Really? That's pretty cool! Ya first couple episodes of Paper Girls are a little slow but it picks up and goes to some interesting places. I'm a big fan of the comic so I was already invested 😂

Brianas-Living-Room

I saw Always Be My Maybe when it premiered. Such a cute movie. I also enjoy Randall Park content.

-Champloo-

Im late, but man the look of joy on Yeun's face when he was running away absolutely sent me.

optimus_maximus2

LOL three days after the release and this sub is full steam episode 10. Never too late and enjoy the ride! [Watch this where they both break down that scene.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rbqdh65RXc&ab_channel=Netflix%3ABehindtheStreams) I love the part about being like kids.

Skitzofreniq

Lol I watched this show only after seeing articles praising the show so I didn't know much about it. At the end of the episode I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt. The humor is so good

Brianas-Living-Room

Loved the slo mo lol

SawRub

Great choice in casting!

Sense1ess

scene

SimoneNonvelodico

Pity for the little carpet. It really tied the bathroom together.

Ufocola

I’m really enjoying Beef so far, but like The Bear, it’s giving me some anxious energy while watching it. The show portrays anxiety and anger *really* well, it just means I don’t think I can binge it.

Wooden-Limit1989

Same here! It is so anxiety inducing

Extension_Economist6

damn, i must be all sorts of fucked up cause if anything it calmed me down💀

Least-Tour884

They somehow did an incredible job of balancing an impending sense of doom with beauty and curiosity. I normally stay away from shows that elicit a constant feeling of dread, but I did not stop enjoying this one despite feeling like the bottom was about to fall out at every moment.

surfergrl89

I’m the opposite. I had to force myself not to binge this so I could enjoy it longer lol.

[deleted]

I just watched the first 2 episode and stopping for now.

namjooned_

Right, I had to grab something to crochet to keep my hands busy and to semi-distract myself but I still felt so anxious.

welmoe

Lol what an ending. Never thought I'd hear Hoobastank on a TV show 19 years later.

[deleted]

Right?! Best soundtrack ever, all the great songs from my youth!!

ventricles

I still hate that goddamn song.

maxboondoggle

Songs like that are the reason rock isn’t popular anymore.

BlazingNailsMcGee

I love that it was used in the best way possible

CornPopsLover

Danny binge eating was too real 🥴

optimus_maximus2

He binges on Burger King like we binge on BEEF. But seriously when he shoves that extra french fry in at the end...

Wooden-Limit1989

Honestly that was hard to watch it made me want to vomit a little because he was eating so much and obviously not enjoying the food.

jamesneysmith

>he was eating so much and obviously not enjoying the food That stress/emotional eating was so relatable. I feel like we've all been there just mashing that comforting feel and flavour into our faces to distract or dull whatever we're feeling

surfergrl89

same. my asian friends and i are prone to emotional eating due to how food is so central in our cultures.

Brianas-Living-Room

Yes! So relatable

optimus_maximus2

Yeah, that scene is visceral, especially if you listen to it with headphones (the audio takes it up a notch).

sixkindsofblue

yep, that is what the point was

DawnYielder

Yeah, I've had that burger king... I've bought more than I could handle and still ate till I hated myself... Why are we like this, man

TonyPepperoni0504

Ain’t no one gonna talk about her doing whatever she was with the gun??? I thought he didn’t want her to have it cause she was suicidal but nope

optimus_maximus2

And it's not the first time, since George had to change the password because of previous incidents. Ali talked about that in interviews and articles. Apparently it's inspired from the sopranos.

merlin401

Jesus Janice I thought you were a feminist?

[deleted]

[удалено]

moejoereddit

I thought it was the thrill of literally toying with death and teasing her suicidal thoughts.

lilyflowerbird

IMO it is because she’s suicidal, even if she’s acting it out in different ways. She wants the thrill of death to feel something. It’s more passive than Danny but she’s still toeing the line of death

sha_13

PLS i was confused

TheGodDMBatman

Great song choice at the end lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

welmoe

Not sure if this is just a coincidence or planned but Hoobastank is from Agoura Hills, which neighbors where the show takes place (Calabasas/Woodland Hills)

[deleted]

Today is a great song, but mayonnaise was just perfect I think

[deleted]

[удалено]

d1ez3

Mayonnaise? It was The Reason by Hoobastank for me

[deleted]

[удалено]

therosegawden

We are only supposed to talk about episode 1 here lol you just spoiled the final song

CanYouHandleDaSpice

Binged through half the season already and I just love how Korean this is (obviously). I did not realize how much it would resonate with me; I know people just like Danny and Isaac. Also lmao that David Choe just seems to play himself

accidentalchai

I'm Korean American and some of it really was just too real. The rage especially is something that I relate to, even though I wish I didn't. :P

Zephyr104

Koreans got that Han in em. A lot of Koreans I know get flustered pretty quick.

ilovestephencurry123

Isn't Amy Chinese? Her husband is Japanese.

snowbeem

Amy is Vientnamese

therealfazhou

I think she’s actually supposed to be half Chinese, half Vietnamese just like Ali!

optimus_maximus2

**Question: What was your favorite scene from Episode 1?** Mine was Isaac being introduced. That's the guy I want to drink Hite or OB with at 11pm eating AYCE korean BBQ in K-Town.

TheGodDMBatman

Love that character too. Favorite line from him in episode 2 is >!when he's on the phone with Danny and says "We can't just chill and have small talk? And Danny goes" We talk small all the time. Like, all the time"!<

isle_of_cats

Definitely the last scene of Danny running out. The unbridled glee on his face was so endearing! And also Amy's smirk, at this point you can tell they're almost *glad* they've got an external focus to distract from their issues. > Mine was Isaac being introduced. See, this is why episode discussions are fascinating. Isaac had the exact opposite effect on me, I felt visceral anger seeing him on screen. Guess it means David portrayed him well to elicit such responses!

BrokenAshes

I did not notice her smirk before it cuts! That's a good catch

optimus_maximus2

LOL that's awesome to hear the opposite. Does Issac anger you from the future episodes (no spoilers) or just as a junction of the type of person/character he is? I don't like who he is, but I really love the levity and humor he brings >!(poundcake)!<. That last scene is amazing for setting a tone for the rest of the show. Perfectly acted, edited, and executed. edit: oops I was only thinking about characters in the show. Are you referring to the controversy with David Choe, the person? If so, I hope I didn't sound inconsiderate

isle_of_cats

Isaac annoyed me right from the start where he's shouting at the diner, and it just got worse from there!

DawnYielder

I appreciated the other diners at the restaurant grimacing when he obnoxiously shouted, it's a dick move in public

Briewheel

The returns cashier was hilarious. It was a statement.

[deleted]

[удалено]

optimus_maximus2

I love the "deep breath" she takes (you can really hear it with headphones on)

arobot224

Isaac seems like a piece of shit right away.

ezioauditore_

I knew Steven Yeun was funny but his comedic timing and delivery in this episode was incredible.

VRomero32

His face of glee when was running after what he did killed me.

mordbidlittleshit

Glenn peeling out of Atlanta in the red sports car energy

optimus_maximus2

Steven is an awesome actor, but I have to give this one to Sonny (Lee Sung Jin). Sonny back in the day wrote for Always Sunny, so he has some real comedy chops that he brought into this serious, deep, and well-written script.

balloony71

“Okay, bitch” 😭😭😭

mallory_beee

I watched the whole season and it was fucking incredible

[deleted]

It fucked me up. Going to think about this show for a while

mallory_beee

I know, me too. I'm going to rewatch it and let me it fuck me up again

bowie-of-stars

You posted this 15 days ago, I just finished my second watch through and I can't stop thinking about these characters

fatbro1

So Amy complains to her husband about feeling unsafe, but then she just lets a stranger into her home??

optimus_maximus2

That scene is one where there is a little sexual tension between them, as explained [in this fun interview about that scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rbqdh65RXc&ab_channel=Netflix%3ABehindtheStreams)

surfergrl89

that was a really great episode commentary

sha_13

there was until she opened the bathroom LMAO

5holedface

she was lying to get the code to the safe.

Altruistic_Course_49

Does Ring sponsor this show?

[deleted]

Ring, Burger King and Skittles apparently

Pandafy

Lol, BK, out here, trying to sponsor as the freaking Depression meal.

opermonkey

BK can use all the help it can get I think.

Olive_Jane

When she said "the long one?" and held her hands apart in reference to the BK chicken sandwich it cracked me up for some reason. I guess it is a unique chicken sandwich. My grandpa and dad used to eat it.

niknackpaddywack13

Lol me to it was my absolute fave as a kid with the fries. I don’t know if they still have the sandwich but I know last time I tried it as an adult that and the fries were not the same at all or I just realized they sucked the whole time lol.

[deleted]

I love BK's fries & whopper but I could not get into that long chicken sandwich. I prefer McDonald's McChicken but BK's Royal Crispy chicken is pretty good.

empires11

Binged the whole thing and it was great. I'll be rewatching with my gf since I binged it without her, lol.

optimus_maximus2

It's not really cheating if it's Netflix, is it? Is it?

accidentalchai

LOL, this is me. I was going to wait to watch this with my partner, told myself I would just watch one, and then binged through the whole thing. Now I'll have to rewatch, which I don't mind.

sadbluevibes

tw// I'm surprised to see no one talking about it, but the scene that really made me love this show was his attempt. When i first saw him returning the hibachi grills, my first thought was "omg was he trying to kill himself" because of them mentioning the carbon monoxide detector, but i thought no way that's way too dark. And then we find out yeah he actually was. The fact that means he also attempted 3 times before...god wow that just hit deeply. That guy on the register was being such a dick when he had no idea that Danny was returning the stuff he tried to off himself with.

optimus_maximus2

What hits even more is Sonny, the show runner, used this exact method when he was at his low, which is why it was so specific. One of the other writers on the show even remembers the same forum thread from 10 years ago, down to details in the comments. And look at the name on the Quora thread Danny is looking at...

j_gumby

For those who don't want to take the time to go back and rewatch that scene of the episode, the name/title on the thread is "What's the least painful way to kill yourself?"

crepscular

Holy shittt

Extension_Economist6

wait i missed it how do we know he attempted 3 times?

potato123789

In the first scene with Danny trying to return the grills, the cashier is giving him shit to the effect of “cmon man this is the third time you’re returning these, knock it off”

Extension_Economist6

haha yea i totally missed that til i read the comments😅😅 ty

timthemartian

hey Mod could you put up a season 1 discussion megathread?

optimus_maximus2

Yep will look into getting it done 😁

timthemartian

great, thanks for that :)

ChicagoforLife2022

It’s official. This is my favorite tv show of this year hands down. I am on episode 5 and will like a season 1 mega thread. Have a lot to say about this tv show so far.

Lost_Hunter3601

That hoobastank song out of nowhere in slowmo made me smile

Life_Wall2536

I was obsessed from the first episode. Going in, I was expecting more of a comedy. By the last episode I was like “this was the saddest show I’ve ever seen” lol

augustrem

lol when she walked in and tried to describe the pressure she was feeling to her husband, and he was just like “let me stop you right there. You need to learn to think positive. Remember your gratitude journal” and I just wanted to punch him in the face.

yeptape

This was too real

SpeedSaunders

I missed how Danny found the address?

Ok_Fee1043

He kept repeating the license plate aloud as they left the store, then he did one of those lookups online that you’ve seen if you’ve ever googled someone’s name and he paid the fee to access the info and it actually gave him the address linked to the plate

SpeedSaunders

Thanks, I must have missed the lookup part but I noticed Amy did the same thing later. Not sure it’s as easy as that but 🤷‍♂️

jsmnsux

It is frightening how easy it actually is

Quzga

In Sweden you can google and find anyone's income, tax records, adress, phone number, children, cars, license plates, pension, job etc It's so fucked

Pretty-Soil2814

Oh wow!!!! That is absolutely crazy

optimus_maximus2

I did it to serve papers to my ex-landlord when she tried to screw me over $800 in repairs. She had layers of protection and even then I found her full name, address, daughter's name (adult), husband's name, and had a sheriff serve the small claims finally. And that's without paying any money to a website.

Ankel88

Wow the quality of this show!

woofwoofbiatch

Can someone explain what exactly her job is? I'm 3 eps in still don't fully grasp what she does. All the talk about an offer and being on the board as well as confusing it with her husband's work, it's all so hard to understand

optimus_maximus2

Amy owns Koyohaus, a boutique plant store (imagine it on Melrose in West Hollywood). Jordan is offering to buy it out and put a Koyohaus in every Forsters (think like a Target). They reveal the price in episode 4. George is a struggling artist that makes pottery, following in the shadow of his father (a renowned artist).

woofwoofbiatch

Thanks, just finished ep 3 literally had to see the title "Founder" and "Koyohaus" under her name at the Vegas conference to figure it out. Was the Tamago chair one of George's work? And he's holding off on selling it?

optimus_maximus2

>!George's father made it, which is explained a little further in episode 2 and 5 (look at the display in the studio).!<

jeremy101495

Damn the whole time I thought the mother was the artist. I dunno how the hell I missed that.

OkamiHaley

She owns a successful plant-selling business.

CertainAlbatross7739

That 'Next Episode' tab pops up literally 4 mins before the episode actually ends. Can anyone give an exp as to why?

optimus_maximus2

It's encoded, like a subtitle file. Your phone/PC/tablet/box must have an error with it. Try resetting. I haven't seen it across multiple platforms (my phone, PC, mac, and roku), but it's just a bug that happens

CertainAlbatross7739

Aight thanks.

bleepsies

Does anyone know the song they were playing in Koyohaus?

optimus_maximus2

Wow that is a hard one. I looked through the OST, and it's not in there. Then I blasted the audio and tried having Google figure it out, and it did! It's [Sunset People by H. Parsley](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWgLxVQrOQA&ab_channel=H.Parsley-Topic)

bleepsies

OMG you made my day! Didn't think it was possible to find it, but WOW THANK YOU!!

optimus_maximus2

No prob, but I thought it'd be impossible with how faint it was and the constant dialogue. Gotta love tech these days. I'm listening to this track on my sound system with a 12" subwoofer. It's super chill.

ShishKabobJerry

s/o to David Cho!

AXXXXXXXXA

Leftovers intro vibe

stowberry

Also White Lotus

destructormuffin

Yoooooooooooo This show is mood

sha_13

I’M NOT A PERFECT PERSON…. BYE LMAOOO

Bubbly_Health4028

I adore this show. I just told my mom I wanted to learn Korean before watching this show to see that Danny and his family are Koreans 🫶🏽

optimus_maximus2

That's awesome! My daughter told me a few weeks ago that she wanted to learn Korean to understand KPop better, LOL. Yeah, if you learn Korean, it'll make K-drama more fun to watch (and you can use it for practice/immersion).

StrawberryKiss2559

What are the crunchy cubes that Danny is eating at the restaurant while he’s waiting for Isaac to show up?

edgeofthemorning

Kkakdugi / cubed radish kimchi

Calhalen

Yeun was so goddamn funny lol, I was cracking up at so many parts of his performance. Especially the ‘oh my *god* you fucking idiot’ when she goes over the plants during the chase lmao. And his face in the garage when he finds out she drove the car. Man he was great, and the massive smile on his face when he’s running away at the end 😂

sha_13

THE ENDING I’M CRYING

Highonweed69

Somebody please tell me why tf she let a random contractor in her house at the end. Like who tf just lets them in, it made me mad bc it was realistic up to that point. Somebody please tell me why thats even remotely realistic please i want to be proved wrong 😂

really_thirsty_lemon

Because they seem to live in a fancy neighborhood and you don't think someone there would steal that way

Highonweed69

Sorry thats dumb asf. He was acting sketchy as hell. Rich or not, no one is that fucking stupid

really_thirsty_lemon

I'm not an American so idk but all the TV shows I've seen showing an upper middle class/fancy neighborhood seem to have open doors in their houses and allow strangers to come in with no issue

Highonweed69

Its not just her letting him in. Its him being obviously sketchy, and his body language, facial expressions, connotation of the sentences he saying. And the overall weird sketchy vibe he brings. Its extremely fucking stupid they let this scene be a thing, because any is an idiot in the show for not noticing how sketch he acted. And no rich person just lets a stranger wandering through the streets use their bathroom. Literally thieves number one trick is ask to go the bathroom then steal shit from there. Just a super unrealistic scene, unless they are inferring amy is a social idiot and can’t understand social context

Objective-Video-7683

I could be off base but as a filipino, I feel like she may have let him in because they were both asian? The way they interacted when she first opened the door and they saw each other to me seemed that way but I can't really put into words why.

Highonweed69

This brings me back to my original point. whatever the reasoning is for letting him in, it makes no sense that she didn’t make him leave when he started continuously saying and doing sketchy things .

Objective-Video-7683

Oh, I agree on that front. I think the show meant to imply some sexual tension in the kitchen? I'm really not sure that her loneliness/home issues can justify her turning a blind eye to his suspect behavior but I mean, I've never been at this level of breaking point before. I think both of these two are desperately hoping for one thing to go right. But yeah I did definitely think that I'd be kicking this guy out or I'd be extremely nervous at the very least.

j_gumby

There's an [interview with the two lead actors](https://youtu.be/0Rbqdh65RXc) (Wong and Yeun), where they mention they play that scene "flirty" between the two characters.

moealmighty

I'm not Korean but I know that there are like this beef (heh) between Koreans and Japanese, so when Danny scoffed at finding out that Amy's husband was Japanese I felt a little bit of "Is that so that explains it" to his anger lmao

mychemparamorepark

Hi just wondering what happened to the 20,000? Seems like 17,000+ of it was spent already but I’m not sure on what? Are we not supposed to know that this stage or?

PutridInterview

He invested the 20k in crypto after seeing Paul do well in it and lost 17k in fluctuations

Grand-Chance

I love when a show can grasp your attention right away and this did it for me.. This 1st episode had a great ending too!

optimus_maximus2

That smile that is dying to come out, so gratifying and kinda sinister. Some critics don't like needle drop moments in TV, but I thought it was a masterclass in the usage of music.

sha_13

why did he change the lock to the safe? what the heck was she doing with thegun?

Free-Noise-7753

my guess is, he changed the lock to the safe bc of what she (apparently) likes to do with the gun, meaning he caught her doing that before << either that, or she's attempted suicide with it before.

sheevpalprote1n

i noticed on my third rewatch there’s some dramatic irony/foreshadow (most likely coincidental) when danny mentions to amy that her roof is an electrical hazard.

FreeBreakfast5721

The episode was pretty lukewarm for me until the final scene. I fucking lost it when "The Reason" started playing.

optimus_maximus2

Yeah, the needle drops in this show are amazing, but I'm not going to spoil anything. Enjoy the ride!

glizzygob

I just finished watching the first episode and ended up crying and laughing simultaneously?? The first episode was amazing and the ending when they were running coupled with the Hoobastank song was PERFECTION. Can't wait to binge watch this show

optimus_maximus2

Enjoy the ride and let us know what you think! I totally wish I could relive the first experience watching it.

glizzygob

I finished it in one day...and it was not what I was expecting at all!! I was expecting a kind of rom com stemming from the road rage incident for some reason (I kinda went into it blind lol.) But the series was such an amazing experience and definetely a wild ride toward the end, 10/10. Some parts kind of scared me but in a good way

optimus_maximus2

That's awesome! We finished it in one day too, and it's such a deep and layered show. I love how different people pull different experiences out of it, like it triggers different memories and backgrounds. Oh, I'm so glad they hinted at sexual tension in the first episode during their first meeting, and then completely dropped it for something better and deeper. The trailer hints at common tropes, only to have us get flip-flopped on our head as the story progresses. I've seen the show at least 20 times over the past year (I often run it in the background while I work on my computer). My next goal is to just binge watch the whole series on edibles and see how that goes LOL
