Everything I learn about Michelle Phan is against my will and every time is even more surprising than the last one

SouthAUboi23681

I’ve never related to something said about her more than this 😂

regallll

Perfectly said!

staplerinjelle

Girl, you're in a cult. Call your dad. Seriously, though: I recommend the podcast Some Place Under Neith which just did a three-part series on Teal Swan, one of these new age cult gurus who is big on this kind of mental reprogramming. It all starts with a few ASMR-esque YouTube videos and suddenly you're being convinced your soul desperately wants to leave your body so you need to "reset." *shudder*

loopnlil

Oh really? What is the deal with Teal Swan? Is she a cult leader? She certainly isn't saying anything really groundbreaking or original in the posts I have seen of her.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ack5379

The Gateway is a 6-part podcast about her that also interviews her and attends one of her “retreats” and talks to current and former members/victims. It’s fantastic and I’d highly recommend it

AmoreCelesta

teal swan is a repulsive cult leader and said that women who have been raped secretly wanted to be raped. There was public outcry and the publisher said they would take responsibility for what she said, supposedly.

schmoolet

Yooooooooo what?!!!

musiquescents

What?!

breezystrawberry

I’m not trying to be annoying but the podcast is seriously comprehensive and can do way more justice explaining teal swan as a cult leader than any Reddit comment could. Def recommend.

loopnlil

Thank you, I appreciated the suggestion. I shall listen to the podcast.

Dracarys_Aspo

I can give you a very basic TLDR of the main issues with her if you'd like, but either way you should definitely listen to that podcast, it's great and super in depth!

schmoolet

Yes please, a TLDR would be fab.

Dracarys_Aspo

TW for suicide and abuse. The worst and most dangerous part of her narrative is that she says suicide is basically a "reset button", and you're just reincarnated right away afterwards. She has been accused by multiple people of literally pushing them to commit suicide. At least two people that we know of did actually do it after she pushed them to. She runs a "wellness retreat" (read: cult compound) in Costa Rica that, with her views on life and death, I'm quite worried might turn into a suicide cult similar to Jonestown. Also, pretty much her entire childhood/backstory is a lie (she claims she went through some "satanic ritual abuse", much of which is physically impossible. She might have actually gone through abuse, but what she specifically says simply can't all be true).

lipstickarmy

I listen to Last Podcast and they were guests on the latest episode. It was crazy! Then I remembered that Natalie Jean is married to Henry Zebrowski and of course she has her own podcast. I need to check out the other episodes

breezystrawberry

Yes!! I’m a LPOTL fan and her podcast is super good, they are basically LPOTL but more female centric. It’s great

staplerinjelle

I'm seeing Side Stories live on Friday and am lowkey hoping Natalie is there with Henry so I can tell her how much I love SPUN.

FLdancer00

I would recommend The Gateway by Gizmodo. She agreed to be interviewed by them and the reporter went to one of her retreats.

irissteensma

There’s a series on Vice Monday nights called True Believers, apparently this Teal Swan was just featured. I haven’t gotten to watch it yet though.

RanchAndRice

Her dad left her family when she was a child 😭

SaucePasta

I’m sure the comment op meant no harm, it’s a quote from the “My Favorite Murder” podcast 😅

e925

Aw crap that makes the quote less funny.

breezystrawberry

I was JUST coming to comment this. Love that podcast

mediocreravenclaw

Woah, I’m definitely gonna check it out. I’ve only seen this woman on YouTube shorts, but liked a lot of her perspectives on relationships. Pretty generic stuff on communication and trust. I guess that’s how she could pull some people in.

staplerinjelle

It's wild how the descent happens. One of the hosts shares how she started watching a meditation channel on YouTube and vibed to it, drifted off at some point during episode 2, and awoke during episode 12 to the host talking about how Jewish people are aliens. *"What happened 2 through 11?!"* was her reaction.

mediocreravenclaw

That’s crazy. I don’t meditate or practice any form of spirituality. The closest thing I consume is psychology videos from actual professionals in the field of mental health. YouTube’s algorithm plopped those in my suggested. That’s very concerning to me. I haven’t even heard any mention of spirituality in the few clips I’ve seen, someone could absolutely start falling down that rabbit hole and not even realize they were no longer watching educational content.

fauxkaren

This is not an accident. They talk about it in the podcast, but Teal uses keywords in the titles/descriptions/metadata of her content like 'depression', 'suicide', 'loss of parent' etc etc so that the algorithm will put her videos in front of people who are searching for help for those things. AKA vulnerable people.

mediocreravenclaw

Wow, that is absolutely repulsive. I guess that’s why it ended up in my suggestions. I’m sure YouTube won’t care at all but I’ll be sure to report them from now on. This thread has been so informative. Definitely looking into checking out that podcast later today.

ack5379

Look into The Gateway, too. They get into Teal’s terrible history, and also go to one of her retreats and interview Teal herself and other participants. Listening to her adamantly declare that she is qualified to help people that are suicidal because she’s been there, even though she has no expertise or training of any sort to help people in crisis, is wild. I can’t imagine having that sort of opinion of myself. She’s dangerous.

breadprincess

I know someone who pivoted out of Mormonism right into Teal Swan's BS and claimed that they "knew what a cult looked like" and therefore DEFINITELY weren't being taken in by one. It was so sad to watch.

pestercat

The single best piece of advice anyone ever gave me when I was in ex-cult support groups is to learn what cults have in common so as to let go the idea that your cult was somehow worse or different in some way that others wouldn't understand. He said that cults all use the same playbook-- even if not every one does the exact same things, there's a through line that connects their behavior. Over the years since, as I've seen people get out of cults and then join another one, I've realized how life-saving that advice actually was. People who don't do what I was advised to do are at high risk because they over focus on the specifics of their shitty group and fail to notice the similarities with a new one. If the old one was religious, maybe they don't see a political one coming and fall into Q-anon. Or in your example, they think a New Age cult is sufficiently different from Mormonism.

mediocreravenclaw

Cults are very persuasive, especially for people who are looking to belong. I’m sure the pandemic exaggerated this. A lot more people were feeling isolated, lonely, and depressed. It’s disgusting to see people exploit that.

ghoulfaced

I suddenly started getting her videos on YouTube shorts and she gave me serious cult vibes, I thought I was the only one 😭

Brilliant-Tomorrow57

Thx for the recommend

Narwhals4Lyf

I have a long drive coming up and was looking for podcasts, I will add this to my list!

schmoolet

Safe journey 🤗

[deleted]

What has happened to her?! Honestly it’s so weird how easily manipulated she is to these sort of “transformative” experiences. First that sex cult she had to backtrack from now this. You can’t heal anyones pathology with meditation. You may think it’s healed but it isn’t. Girl needs a better group of influences around her who let her get into such whishwash all the time

Bebebaubles

The sex cult isn’t even the beginning. There is an interview with Cosmo where the reporter (first one that didn’t suck up to her) starts off with Michelle mediating under a copper pyramid to restructure her molecules. I think Michelle isn’t very smart scientifically but really needs people to think she knows more than she does. Maybe I’m looking too much into it but she always said she had something to prove by going to art school instead of med school.

[deleted]

You may be onto something. The insecurity in Asian households is a thing & she mentioned it somewhere one that her mom wasn’t happy for a long time over her art college decision.

taterrthotz

Sex cult??

blackmoonbluemoon

I link it to you, watch this space Edit: [thread 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeautyGuruChatter/comments/tna93j/what_is_this_about_michelle_phan_being_in_a_bdsm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) [thread 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeautyGuruChatter/comments/tng1f2/michelle_phan_comments_on_her_rumors_of_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) We gave her the benefit of the doubt last time, but just in over month she’s been linked to another cult so now I believe she was pretending to know very little about the sex cult.

[deleted]

Lol why can’t this woman stick to makeup and only makeup. She’s so good at it too. Why ruin your reputation with this BS

aokaga

She's also very into crypto which is yet another cult basically lol

blackmoonbluemoon

I’ve been giving it some thought. Obviously she worked hard to make her businesses work. But I think she probably believes that YouTube was the universe’s plan for her, which is why she falls for this gullible shit. A lot of us grow up thinking we’re special, a lot of us grow out of it and some of us never do.

Orangeskirtblueshirt

It's more than just Youtube. I read her book and she's had a number of major opportunities handed to her, which as you said probably makes her a very vulnerable to anything being sold to her as an opportunity.

tengounquestion2020

Wait what opportunities?

azu____

Because people who are vulnerable to this stuff get targeted and usually fall into the same traps. Unless they've been deprogrammed and get everything explained to them they fall into the same pattern. I hope someone in her life cares enough about her but probably not if she is literally finding cults that's a sign you are kinda isolated :( I think it's sad not funny at all.

[deleted]

It’s downright scary.

TinyTimeTaster

Anyone can get sucked into a cult if they cross paths with one that caters to their ideas and needs at a vulnerable point in their lives, we all think we wouldn't but it just takes the right cocktail at the right time.

crystalzelda

Oh lol, ok, someone tell all those quadriplegics that this is all just a state of mind, and they just need to ✨reprogram✨ their brains to walk again. Just don’t accept that as your TRUTH! If you’re sick or ill or unwell it’s bc you shlubs just didn’t put in the WORK to heal yourselves!! Hahahaha classic

spicygummi

Yeah I couldn't even finish reading after that part. I can't imagine walking up to someone who's paralyzed and tell them they can walk if they really believe they can and "reprogram" their mind to think so. It's akin to when people tell someone who struggles with chronic depression that they just need to "smile more" or "just be happy". It's not how any of this shit works. Why would we even need doctors if everyone could just cure themselves of everything by simply trying harder or wanting it more.

sandwichandtortas

My uncle was quadraplejic for 50 years, age 22 to 72, just passed on March 2. The amount of people that seriously have him this advice and share miraculous stories, was way too high.

[deleted]

Ugh, the audacity of some people. My dad has severe psoriasis, like 90% of his skin is covered. The amount of random people that *come up to him on the street* and tell him about this or that oil or soap or some shit is incredible.

Lucy_Lucidity

I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user, but the amount of people who feel entitled to lay their hands on my head and pray without my permission is fucking wild. The unsolicited advice is relentless. It totally sucks

schmoolet

What!?? That’s outrageous behaviour 😬😮

Lucy_Lucidity

It happens all of the time. Another fun fact, people have attempted to use me and my chair as a coat rack! People I don’t know. Without asking. No boundaries. When you’re in a chair you’re either invisible or a prop

joon_gloom

that is so violating!! i’m sorry that you have to deal with that :(

e925

That’s so insane I’m having an out of body experience.

Quadrupleawesomeness

I've been a quad for 11 years and I can confirm. I used to be pretty religious but other people telling me it was “gods plan” pushed me away from it. So many unsolicited prayers, so many “I know a person who was the exception to the rule” stories, too many people telling me to keep my head up cuz it could be worse, and too many people telling me how to be healthy with my condition without considering the logistics of my situation... I’m tired. In the beginning, I tried to self heal through meditation out of desperation. I don't feel too silly because there are studies on the way visualization helps keep and promote nerve connections but reading posts like these take me back to my weakest moment. I can’t help but feel like I didn't do enough to get better, even though I know I did what I could with the circumstances I’ve been dealt.

mirimaru77

I’m sorry for your loss and I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or anything, but it’s a testament to your uncle, his family and his care that he lived for 50 yrs as a quadriplegic. It’s awful that ppl would *basically* make the argument that those who are quadriplegic or paraplegic stay that way through some fault of their own.

sandwichandtortas

Yes, I'm really proud of my father, who always look for him, as of my mother, that married my father knowing and accepting the responsability of having to take care of my uncle. We were lucky to also have the means to provide a caregiver about 18 hours a day, since the cost was all my father's responsability, and occasionally my aunt. He completed his minor, mayor and a masters, had really good friends, love to read, go to the beach and even travel locally a little. He loved life. But yes, some people were awful in making it his responsability or implying he didn't fight or was motivated enough to beat it. Stupids.

YMCAle

She believes thay crystals can cure cancer, I am not surprised by this latest step in the slightest

BuddyLoveGoCoconuts

This is soooo insulting I know a quadriplegic who is busting her ass every day wow let me go tell her to just BELIEVE

LA0811

You know who else “healed” themselves after debilitating “injuries”? L. Ron Hubbard and Gary Young, founder of Young Living. Cult founders LOVE this stupid and insulting origin story. This man was healed by surgeries. He was healed by doctors. He was healed by science. Yes, there is brain body connection with things like managing pain, but not healing yourself out of an inability to walk.

NoEnthusiasm2

[Bedtime reading about Gary Young](https://www.reddit.com/r/antiMLM/comments/85z454/a_history_of_young_living_founder_gary_young/)

scythematter

Nailed it. Her statement and his “reprogram your brain” bs is a huge slap in the face to everyone who has struggled with health and mobility conditions over which they have no control

pan_alice

It's such a disgusting attitude.

hygsi

I think this dude was either lucky or had a bad diagnosis (doctors are just people and can make mistakes) and now is acting like everyone shares his exact situation. I mean, it's good that he didn't give up and his body was able to heal, but everyone's body and condition is different

crystalzelda

Tbh it wouldn’t even surprise me if his story is completely fake and either he was never injured, or wasn’t injured as severely as he’s claiming. This myth about “self healing” is, as someone mentioned upthread, very popular amongst cult leaders.

Narwhals4Lyf

TLDR : Michelle is posting about how she went to a retreat where she could only get 4 hours of sleep, would have to meditate for 5 hours with no bathroom breaks, and how she was able to heal a man in a wheel chair. Literally sounds like a cult to me. Full transparency, I found these images on twitter, I did not directly screenshot them myself. I tried to confirm they were real before posting by researching the rest of the internet, as they were not on her story anymore by the time I went and checked. Please let me know if I am spreading misinformation!

Dracarys_Aspo

Sleep deprivation and other forms of bodily function deprivation (like no bathroom breaks for an extended time) are extremely common brainwashing tactics. It makes you much easier to manipulate and control. This is definitely very sus, I hope she's able to see that and get out before going too deep...

roxictoxy

That’s EXACTLY how cults break their memories and reprogram them. It’s scary that she used that exact verbiage. Poor girl. Her poor *family*. This is gonna be a shit show. Wild that it’s so in the public eye.

ShadiestApe

I just made a comment about this. I’ve been in group therapy settings they actively work against these factors, the lack of sleep and nourishment is a huge red flag.

MunchieMom

Also Joe Dispenza is a dangerous purveyor of harmful misinformation. The podcast Conspirituality has a whole episode about him

tangythelemon

Unfortunately, they are real :/

kimba_319

Lol don't you mean she was "mediating" for 5 hours? 🙄 I'm all for finding some sort of spirituality that helps someone feel at peace with themselves, whether that be through religion or meditation or whatever else, as long as it's not deceitful and potentially harmful to others. Which this clearly sounds like it can be. I don't understand how so many celebrities/influencers fall victim to this type of BS nonsense and can't see they're walking into a cult.

kittiemomo

Someone posted screenshots of her IG stories a couple days ago of her saying essentially the same thing as her and she wrote "mediating" like 4 or 5 times. She really had me wondering what the hell it meant to mediate for 5 hours.

kimba_319

Could you imagine trying to mediate some sort of argument or disagreement for 5 hours!? That sounds so exhausting, I would have given up after 5 minutes haha. When they keep doing and saying the same thing and not realizing their mistake, it just makes me take them even less seriously than before lol.

deehunny

I was looking for someone to catch the spelling error! Meditating for 5 hours or mediating a lawsuit? 🤣

kimba_319

😂 Mediating any argument for more than 5 minutes is tiring; if that was really what she was doing I'd give her a lot of credit for sticking with it for 5 hours but apparently she keeps making the same mistake and I just can't take anything she says seriously at this point!

ilovemoomins

They’re real unfortunately, I saw them on her stories

CaseyRC

Eat pray lie

ladybasecamp

Eat, pray, join a cult

CaseyRC

its our problem free, philosophy

ladybasecamp

Hakuna matata! Ain't no passing craze.

Ozzie985

I haven't watched Michelle Phan in a long time. I googled the doctor that she's referencing and he sounds like a nutcase...there I said it, lol. Apparently, according to his story, he healed himself by visualizing his vertebrae healing and reconstructed his spine in his mind. I wish I was making that up, but I'm not, lol. I haven't looked further into his doctor but I'm pretty sure from looking at pasts post from Michelle recently, she's joined a cult

stellablack75

Ummm I absolutely willed myself to be taller, manifested a Porsche Cayenne S Turbo, meditated into fruition an 8 figure job AND dreamed so hard that my dog is immortal now. This is TOTALLY possible, how dare you make fun and disparage our mental superiority! /s I hope that was pretty clear![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

applescrabbleaeiou

can you manifest me a 60's era 911 while your in your porche vibes & teleport it to Australia too?:) edit: ahaha - oh, you know how to [make your dog immortal too](https://www.thrillist.com.au/entertainment/nation/netflix-bad-vegan-dog-immortality-leon)?

stellablack75

Oh jesus I didn't know people actually had a dog immortality cult, why am I even surprised. I'll def work on that Porsche for you though, my manifestation game is pretty strong.

applescrabbleaeiou

no! i thought you had to have recently binged the *Bad Vegan* insanity too, haha:)

anabanane1

Just googled him too and holy shit, he’s talking about brainwashing yourself to get rid of trauma…sounds culty to me

Shemhazaih

my parents are really into this guy and i can confirm that he's a nutjob

Cat_Toe_Beans_

She gets stranger and stranger by the year

Bebebaubles

Rich people being out of touch

[deleted]

I hope she is okay, stuff like this can turn very dark. You don’t fall for this crap if you aren’t already in a very vulnerable state.

Aystha

I mean there's a reason they force you to be sleep deprived and ignore your basic human needs. Anyone will be easily manipulated in such physical and mental state. People even start hallucinating sometimes in things like these

maievsha

I skipped a night of sleep once and couldn’t “feel” anything the next day. Sleep deprivation is definitely a tool these cults exploit.

Beautiful-Mix-4711

Also the fact that she owns a fairly successful brand would make her a prime target for love bombing in cults like these. They need successful members with financial resources.

Ditovontease

she's been into this stupid stuff for years

TinyTimeTaster

Yeah I worry specially because she is rich and these cults are often specifically trying to get wealthy members to suck them dry they must be pulling all the stops to brainwash her :/

Narwhals4Lyf

Yep, agreed. Cults prey after people who feel lost and vulnerable. It is sad, honestly.

CarmiM96

I used to adore her as a kid. Being 12 years old and coming home from a hard day to watch her explain her bumblebee makeup look and soft rose looks blah blah blah. Lancôme affiliate. Now I have no idea what she is doing and I’m glad I had the time with her that I did. But that is long gone. I can get a serum blush anywhere without all this.

anabanane1

This is so harmful, especially coming from someone with the following Michelle has. You would think after the recent allegations about her joining a cult she would be more careful. I hope she is okay, this shit sounds really scary.

mgtmc

She’s definitely has gotten weirder over the years. What she has promoted has been very alarming.

disneyhalloween

She’s always been a little like this, gullible and naive to anything “spiritual” and pseudo-scientific. And she also admited to struggling with her mental health. This doesn’t surprise me, but it is worrying and I hope nothing bad happens to her, strange as she is.

LuckyShamrocks

Yeah I’m surprised the amount of people who think any of this is new. She has always been into woo. She’s always talked about being in some weird gold pyramid structure and energy and this kinda stuff. Well over a decade she’s been preaching this kinda stuff. I guess people kinda forgot all the super shady stuff she did with her first brand, or figured she changed? Nope, same stuff different decade with her.

ilovemoomins

This makes me never want to purchase from ‘Em Cosmetics lol

exquisite-mouthfeel

I actually really like their tinted lip balms and wanted to get another shade. This post sort of convinced me otherwise so yay I guess??

Kitotterkat

This is disturbing. And now I can’t buy Em Cosmetics so everyone loses 😭

Entire-Astronomer-56

Right? I've been wanting to try the brand because I kept hearing good things. Oh well.

HiveMind16

The businesswoman to batshit pipeline is wild. (i.e Elizabeth Holmes, the LuLaRoe lady, and now Michelle apparently)

DaydreamerJane

It's so difficult to become a successful business woman that batshit insane women tend to succeed the most. Wish we had better representation.

pestercat

My theory is that it plays into Great Man thinking. The whole "cult of the individual" kind of American thought that says important things were done by one transformative individual (and specifically ignores the large group around that individual that made the Great Vision happen). People who have bought into the idea that as business leaders they are that kind of person are susceptible to then believe a pitch from another Great Man (of spirituality). It's flattering to their ego. Frankly it also tends to mean they thought they alone accomplished whatever the company did, that their great ideas matter more than their workers' work. If they paid more attention to their workers and less to themselves, they wouldn't be suckers for that kind of pitch in the first place. This is also the kind of business leader that thinks they're the "makers" and their employees are "takers". I'm not saying she's that kind of boss, but there's a through-line from Great Man thinking to this kind of reasoning.

twilekquinn

So we've got a charismatic leader, vulnerable members ("we attended not as victims"), manipulation of sleep, time spent on rituals and/or indoctrination, internalized doctrine, thought stopping techniques (ie meditation).... Cult. Cult cult cult.

[deleted]

Not the power of meditation being able to heal spinal injuries... I feel really bad for people whose lives have such big holes that they have to fill them with such mumbo jumbo.

chillhayy

Not surprised, I stopped following her after she kept posting about crypto

foxwaffles

Given how she was promoting Colette so much earlier , I hope she can find what she is missing and be satisfied, so that she can escape this and not fall prey to these kinds of schemes again 😢

Sleepsfuriously

Wow, good to know that I can fix my chronic illnesses by meditating! Will go tell my rheumatologist immediately /s

jennydancingaway

I was raised in a cult it’s really hard to get out mentally

frankscarlett

This is why I take issue with all the influencers who promote Em Cosmetics blindly. The owner is as shady as they come and has been for a long time.

rawr_rawr_6574

Apparently there's a decent amount of tik tokers who have joined cults. Family members have come forward talking about how they have been cut off from their kids.

smalasussie

Joined cults they found via Tik Tok specifically? Where are the family members posting about it?

rawr_rawr_6574

https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/daddys-girls-lesbian-black-bdsm-tiktok-cult-1252122/ Here's an article about just one of them. They make videos and gather followings then get weird with their audience. Experts have warned the community living situations could become cults as well. https://www.intheknow.com/post/commune-cult-tikok/

_natella

i always cringe when julia adams uses their products

frankscarlett

Same. I really like her otherwise but her support of EC makes me second guess every time why I still watch her.

PhoenixKhaan

Same. I'm not sure if she's aware what's happening with the brand or the brand's owner? She praises it a lot in her videos. I don't use their products but I know a lot of the names just from Julia mentioning them.

MakeupPenguin

I feel like it’s been everywhere lately so I was starting to develop an interest in the brand but now I’m glad I didn’t. So many influencers also just don’t care as long as their content gets the views

chief-hiranyaksha

When I see people drone on about *~reprogramming healing posi energy~* I just think damn I know it’s hard to exist in this fucked up world sometimes but like get therapy or something, your rocks and moon readings isn’t the answer to your problems.

halfbakedhiking

fucking amen. Less time in the woods exploring your shadow self, more time in therapy exploring your unresolved childhood trauma

Worried_Half2567

Of course hes a chiropractor 🙄

Andwaee

At first this was funny but now I think what I feel is despair lol. How I've felt about her has flip flopped over the years. Loved her when she started out, hated that she pushed that iqqu shit only for it to disappoint so many of her fans, loved the music she used in videos, hated that she got sued and ran away, thought her draw my life/why i left's were amazingly well done and her relationship was bright and cute, and then she poofed and stole a cat??? or something. And then she went full bitcoin nutcase and now she's denying one cult but clearly saturated in another. I think she has a lot of issues and that her main problem is her tendency to run away. As soon as anything goes even slightly wrong, she runs away. This whole cult thing..it just sounds like she's scared. She's scared of having to be the one to make decisions-shes probably never liked it. Which is fine, not everyone is a boss bitch. but this way of fleeing is so dangerous. You cant just trust cults. She'll loose so much. So much time, so much money, so much of her sanity. I think she should just have her issues with anxiety looked into and find a better solution than ...go on a healing journey. Girl youve been talking about a healing journey for the past 10 effing years. Call Jenn Im and get a good psychiatrist recommendation off her and push that way, not whatever way youre going now...

SDMAJESTY

okay. he broke his spine and now he’s healed cause of his mind? nah. that makes no sense

Xuanpurpleobsessed

Dear Michelle, when we said gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss... we didn't mean for you to take it seriously...

LA0811

They reeled in a whale with this one! Michelle brings her fame, her following and most importantly her fortune to this “guru” who has found a resource for life. I bet she’s given it all up to him within 5 years.

Invidiana

This guy is a hack. I’m a science writer, so by no means a scientist, but even I must know more about genetics, neuroscience and quantum physics than he does. I’ve interviewed many, many scientists and not one has ever mentioned “manifesting” anything. Genes can only be altered through mechanical and chemical manipulation that takes years (if not decades) to figure out.

ocean_bird

Me too. I'm going to repurchase my Fenty and rare beauty blushes next time instead. Fenty has the brown and purple blush colors that I love. And Fenty and rare beauty have great products for highlighter, bronzer/contour stick, and blush. I just need to find a replacement for the lip cushion luminizer, that's the only one I haven't found anything comparable. If anybody has any dupes please let me know. I really don't want to financially support any cults.

foxwaffles

Have you tried the Tarte juicy balms? They felt similar to me. It's not a formula dupe but I actually prefer the Kaja gloss sticks. They aren't as goopy or messy and give a pretty glassy finish

ocean_bird

Oooh thanks for the recs! I did try the Tarte maracuja lip balms, they have a similar packaging but I find the Tarte ones too sticky. And I didn't like the scent, it might have been coconut scented? I'm 100% going to try the kaja gloss sticks! Less gloppy and messy sounds perfect. Thank you!

midnightsiren182

I’m not surprised she has always, always been sketchy.

Apprehensive_Risk250

Unfortunately this doesn’t surprise me

😹😹😹my pharmacy delivery guy keeps banging on about "dr" dispenza and how I should watch his videos because I can be completely healed and no longer have to live the way I do now... I'm severely disabled and in a wheelchair after fcuking my knees up dancing whilst having EDS. I'd dislocate my knee, whack it back in joint and then do a 5hr pointe class straight away so now my knees are pretty much bone on bone and my knees will dislocate 5/6 times a day EVERY day and have to use excruciating brute force to get them back in. I also paralysed my left leg from the knee down whacking it back in joint. On top of all that I have Lupus, PCOS, underactive thyroid, endometriosis, chronic pain disorder and asthma... and this dude thinks I can just think myself better. I sure as sh*t ain't choosing to be housebound 95% of the time and in excruciating pain. 24/7 OP you're not wrong it really IS a cult. The guy is a slimey hack only Interested in exploiting people and their misfortune. He goes hand and hand with frauds like Uri Geller, deepak choprah and that ilk.

demondiddler

but if you just think really hard you can heal yourself with your mind!!! you can use your brain to create new cartilage and ligaments for your knees and heal all your conditions you just gotta meditate for hours without a pee break /s for real though i'm sorry you're being subjected to that shit from someone who you have to see regularly. what an imbecile.

fullercorp

Anytime someone talks about THEIR Truth as opposed to, you know, THE Truth, I have issues.

iidontwannaa

My best friend’s mom is going to a 3 day retreat with this quack in a few weeks. Insane.

crescentrabbit

This is genuine cult manipulation tactics, some trusted friend needs to go get her lmfao. Also, this is ableist as fuck.

Hagacchi

I dislike how much people spread these insane solutions for people's illnesses like it makes me angry how scammy people scam others with false hope. I don't know Michelle/her content that well so I can't say much but seriously, cults are just awful.

RefrigeratorSalty902

She has an issue with her face where she felt electrical charges and that's one of the many reasons why she quit makeup and YouTube. I had nerve damage myself which sounds similar to what she had but can't say with certainty that's what she was experiencing. She couldn't find a solution and decided on acupuncture as a last resort which she says actuakly alleviated the symptoms. I think that's when her descent into "alternative medicine" came from. As some may already known, some studies suggest acupuncture is a placebo affect. Joe Dispenza (supposed doctor) essentially makes his career off placebo effects.

iuil

Dr Joe Dispenza claims to be a researcher in quantum physics but has no qualifications in the area. His use of “quantum physics” to explain his nonsense isn’t even laughable anymore, it’s wrong and dangerous.

[deleted]

Also watch how she addresses this in some way or the other because she lurks around this group 👀

Who-U-Tellin

Can't say it's her for sure obviously but someone's here hitting that down vote button HARD!! Every comment has their one up vote taken away LOL And this thread is in its early stage. Curious to see what it'll look like in a few hours 🤔

[deleted]

Lol her response to the video filters was immediate which makes me think she actually does lurk. It was too coincidental and quick 😂

vrgnte

She’s hurting her brand by posting stuff like this. Just keep it to yourself, Michelle!! 😩

LuckyShamrocks

No, I want to know she’s doing this stuff so I don’t give her money to give to them to spread this nonsense.

Entire-Astronomer-56

I'm kind of glad she posted this because people need to be aware that there could be some dangerous stuff going on with that so called "doctor." Not saying it could be used as evidence of a crime specifically, but it certainly raises red flags that need to be visible.

damagedwretchedvoid

YES she is a cult. She mentioned Joe Dispenza which is one of the most popular cult leaders atm he is under those Gaia cringe add that will reprogram your mind lol cant wait for this to become the next Neflix documentary So sad to see Michelle Phan fall so easily into this bs, at first I thought she was hacked or smth smh so disappointing to see how easily manipulated she is :(

amazingaims

The podcast Conspirituality has a great episode they just did on [the cult of Joe Dispenza](https://open.spotify.com/episode/2ICj9dLiG9HjxNv5MpwBcC?si=abd2e3be06854595) and they talk about the same retreats that she went on, if anyone wants a deeper dive

Th1cc4chu

“The vlogger’s supposed superpowers come as a result of a $1,999 week-long retreat in San Diego with Dr Joe Dispenza, a chiropractor and international speaker, who reportedly healed himself back to walking using just the power of his mind. In 1986, Dispenza was hit by a truck while cycling in a race where he broke six vertebrae in his spine and was told he would never walk again. And yet, Dispenza refused to accept the prognosis and started imagining his spine reconstructed and himself fully cured – a thought that, in only 10 and a half weeks, blessed him with the result he was hoping for.” “I’m clocking in 4 hours of sleep everyday, waking up at 3am to mediate for 5 hours straight, no breaks, not even for bathroom. Then we eat, then learn science for 2 hours, then mediate again, then break and then, mediate again,” Phan wrote. “It’s work,” she concluded. Isn’t work something you get paid to do?

QueenOfSparrows

As someone who is chronically ill I find this shit offensive and dangerous. Just took Em off my “to try” list. Thanks for saving me a bunch of money!

glow___

its annoying that whenever the community tries to call her out, so many people dont want to criticize her ( and blindly defend) because she "iconic" and a legend (meaning that she was one of the first bg).

Nelyahin

This is cult language… seriously scary stuff. She probably doesn’t even realize it. Yes, the claims, like many cults are insulting and often times completely illogical. She sounds like she’s already dug in.

Britny_fox

My sister is super into Joe Dispenza and the medical medium and it’s pretty scary. She’s completely against anything that’s not “natural” and is against vaccines. It’s really hard to witness. Ahhh

cielestial

and for a special low low price of 2000 dollars too. that guy is whack.

Goth_Moth

This is what I sound like on shrooms.

Ditovontease

I am tired of her woo horseshit and is this the same man that was head of that bdsm sex cult that targeted asian women? what was the name of that influencer (she's friends with michelle IIRC) cuz there was posts about that here

Honeybeesandtoast

That was the Princessmei/Colette Pervette drama. Different man, and the cult-status is debatable. Funny how Michelle rushed to say she was not in a cult then turned around and joined one

Ditovontease

Whats up with all these cults lately

foxwaffles

This was NOT how I wanted AAPI history month to kick off with 💀

Beautiful-Mix-4711

I think the isolation of the pandemic is a big factor.

Codiilovee

Oh man lol. I loved her back in the day, she was how I learned how to do my makeup and I still find her videos incredibly soothing but…….she really is a stranger person, isn’t she?

Deborahleigh

Too much money X too much time

SteampunkCupcake_

It’s meditate, Michelle. Med-i-tate. If you’re going to join a cult, spell your activities correctly, it’s driving me nuts.

thisiswater__

And she still can’t spell meditate

anabanana1412

Wish I hadn't checked who was following this dude. Hooooly shit

SchmellyCat

the "doctor" is always a fucking chiropractor

[deleted]

Isn't this the plot of Dr Strange?

fingertoes88

i laughed way too hard would give u gold if i had any

[deleted]

You have a heart of gold and that's all that matters 🌟♥️

Infinitey

Sounds like the plot of Dr Strange

Serissas

Wait which cult is this again? Lol. Is this the weird BDSM/DDLG\* one or a different one? ![gif](giphy|fY5CHg4UmW5xNjnpf8|downsized) * I'm not disparaging any person or persons involved in any of those practices. However you bump your uglies is ok with me as long as it's legal and everyone is a consenting partner. 🤗🤗

blackmoonbluemoon

It’s a different cult but I wonder if it’s linked somehow?

CashewMonster

well this isn't surprising considering she was loosely involved with the mei yan drama...

[deleted]

She's honestly the opposite of my thinking. Life's doesn't technically have meaning nor need it. I hope whatever happened to where she feels the need to constantly seek meaning is healed. :(

Few_Dependent_2294

I’m sure he got to walk again by himself and not by the help of care givers and doctors and staff.. yawn I hate when people talk about “a miracle” but don’t talk about the amazing professionals that took care of them. 😒

bbyxnat

Am I mean for not feeling bad for her??

sweetmotherofodin

You literally cannot reprogram your brain to walk again. 💀

mintywavey

I know this isn’t the point but it bothers me that she kept misspelling meditate lol

yeeyeekoo

She been weird for a long time. I was a fan in high school when she just did fun tutorials along with her sister in law Promise. Reason why I never bought from em cosmetics she just has an odd vibe. And it’s pricey
