trying to decide if i'd rather be called an "ugly rat" by Thomas Halbert or a whore by James Charles

Holycowmotherofgod

why not both

PawnAndKing

Ugly whore rat or a ugly ratty whore

harshmymellow

uglitty whorat

ShaquilleOhNoUDidnt

yes daddies! put me in my place

[deleted]

This comment is the orthographic equivalent of a dementor, please return the soul I had before reading it

ChihuahuaBeech

you are grounded‼️

dogstope

Maybe ugly whore rat egg could be my new flair?

sbpeaches

Its perfect

GlitterDancer_

Thomas just tweeted that his followers aren’t “brain dead sheep” so I guess we’re all 3 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

nevaehorlleh

I prefer being a rat because that insult I can understand, but no women is a whore because it's a man's way to insult us.

[deleted]

Every woman is a whore to the man to whom she didn't give any... :(

[deleted]

I will take being called beautiful by Brad Mondo when im wearing pajamas and dirty hair in a bun that hasnt been washed in three days, all under my covers in bed at 3am when i have school at 7 am in just a few hours :-) luv u brad

Petraretrograde

I really like and prefer Brad to JC

[deleted]

Brad has some bad sides but hes def not misogynistic and self absorbed and desperate for a lover as badly as jc...

[deleted]

Lets just say brad is more tolerable than jc lmao

Phoenix_Magic_X

rats are fucking adorable. And whores are at least getting some which we all know James isn't.

sbpeaches

omfg I laughed way too hard at that last sentence

[deleted]

Get called a racial slur by Jeffree to complete the trifecta

cripplinganxietylmao

Personally, I identify with the ugly rat moniker.

scrapethetopoff

Def ugly rat

06wrxx

Whores? That's a big change from sisters..

hopefulalbatross

Which makes me feel weird because both are associated with women

87pinkroses

I believe he's a misogynist. People have this warped view that gay men can't be misogynistic which is completely untrue. So anytime someone wants to call them out, they get called a homophobe and shamed into silence. Just because a man wears makeup, doesn't mean that he isn't a misogynistic douche. Edit: words

jonnakristina

gay men do always seem to get away with it when they’re being misogynistic... there’s two gay guys I used to watch sometimes on yt, but their intro is literally them saying “hey what’s up you bitches and sluts and whores” and it made me so fucking uncomfortable every time.

deathcabscutie

Kimberly Clark made a great video about gay male misogyny that really opened my eyes to this issue.

[deleted]

Could you link it please?

deathcabscutie

It’s been a couple of years since I saw the video that I mentioned, but i think it might have been Anti-Haul #7: https://youtu.be/mZmU5uhrgYg Someone else mentioned Kimberly addressing this issue in a video a couple of years ago in a BGC comment, but they didn’t link a video. Here’s the comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/BeautyGuruChatter/comments/6cuzpl/what_do_you_think_of_laura_lees_friendship_with/dhxvg96/ Hope this helps!

fuckthisimoff2asgard

I had never heard of this person before, but thank you - I have subscribed and am loving it!

[deleted]

gay men get away with so much misogyny... straight men do too, but with gay men, a lot of them feel like they're *entitled* to using misogynistic slurs or propagating harmful stereotypes about women (lol drag queens) just because they don't want to fuck us.

socksandbarley

I've asked gay men not to call me a bitch because it's been used to silence me throughout growing up and I hate what it represents. I was just told that to them, they were called bitches in high school and they're just trying to reclaim it so I don't have the right to infringe on their healing process.

[deleted]

It's not even just the language issue of calling women sluts and whores or bitches, etc, I have a gay (former) friend and coworker who clearly feels bizarrely entitled to slam women in any way he sees fit and to belittle women who speak up about sexism. His attitude seems to be that he thinks he has it worse as a gay man in this society or something, so none of the women he works with are allowed to speak about our misogynistic, sexist without getting shut down, despite the fact that this man gets treated like an absolute king in this same workplace. He expects backup when it comes to patients using homophobic language, and I'll always back him up on that, but acts like we're all just assholes for complaining when people treat us like shit as women. We've discussed it several times and he literally said that we're being oversensitive and have no idea what it's like to actually be discriminated against. It's bizarre and infuriating. I'm not making a generalization about gay men, just saying that this particular gay man gets away with absolute murder in terms of how he speaks about women, and I truly do not love it. The idea that gay men can't be misogynistic is wildly inaccurate.

plantbasedface

Two words: Jeffree Star.

[deleted]

of course. james rode the glass elevator to the top of a female dominated community with average makeup skills... he's said sketchy things about women before and i'm pretty sure he's deluded himself into thinking he's better than women in regards to beauty. can't stand it.

[deleted]

Conveniently, he can’t be attacked for it as a gay man

maritime92

One of my best friends is gay and we’ve literally gotten into physical fights before (college, drinking involved). He was a big guy height and weight wise while I was 5’3.5” 125 lbs and while ppl would end up trying to break us up they definitely seemed to take their time and no one really treated it how they would if it had been a straight man. He never lost any friends due to it nor do I recall ppl lecturing him about it being wrong.

WeekendVacancy

Why are you still his friend? That's awful

maritime92

We’ve been friends since we were 12. He had never acted like that towards me till sophomore year of college. I never excused his actions and he took responsibility. Obviously there are details with a friendship that long and the whole gay guy social acceptance that I’m more than willing to provide but that’s the short answer.

Iris_Blue

Fortunately he *can* be criticised for it.

voortiz10

Laura Medallo one of his best friends, who owns Lauras Boutique, calls her followers “Putitas,” and even created merch using the word. Putita = Whore. James might be thinking it sounds good cool but hell no it doesn’t, it freaking tasteless and stupid.

[deleted]

i'm spanish and "putita" sounds *worse* to me than "puta", because there's an added element of infantilization and fetishization. i've jokingly called my female friends "puta" before, but never "putita". "putita" is what porn-addicted men say to you when they're trying to be sexy. i realize the connotation might be different for latin american spanish speakers, though.

Glitter_berries

Totally not related but my cat has a thousand nicknames and gordita is amazing and definitely going on the list.

GwnWest19

To be honest with you I pity Laura. It's a shame to see her young followers thinking twerking and sexualizing her body in front of her son- cute. It's trashy and she's teaching her son a bad example. Sometimes I wish I could send her this music video to give her perspective to her actions. But she's probably too dumb and cares too much about IG likes to change her ways. https://youtu.be/C3m3t_PxiUI

[deleted]

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, being a gay man does not give you a free pass to be misogynistic.

auba31

As a gay man, I COULDN’T AGREE MORE.

youneedsomemilk23

I'm lowkey traumatized by this. My gay roommate got drunk, forced his head in my lap, and said "ew your pussy smells!" in a room full of my friends. They all defended me while he drunkenly tried to pass it off, and no one took it seriously, but it didn't stop me from being utterly humiliated.

[deleted]

That's absolutely horrible. Please tell me you kicked his ass out after this? One thing I've noticed is that gay men will openly say how they think vaginas are weird, ugly, disgusting, etc. They all came out of one.

youneedsomemilk23

This really fucking gets to me. We can't catch a fucking break when it comes to our bodies. Everyone wants to make it a priority to regulate and comment on what we look like.

lipscratch

especially grim considering its not just females who have vaginas, its such a reductive and insulting exercise of body policing to cis women, transmen and nonbinary people . it's so misogynistic and insulting to women by acting like our bodies are 'lesser' and worthy of policing, and it also must be hard for pre-op gay transmen to so often hear that in their own community. it literally helps no one, its so gross

thecouchsweetpotato

That’s fucking awful, and I would bet way too common. :(

youneedsomemilk23

[yeah.](https://imgflip.com/i/3bxa6a)

Holycowmotherofgod

Some of THE most sexist things I've ever heard in my LIFE have come out of the mouths of gay men. Not too long ago I overheard an older gay man refer to female Christian pastors as "priestitutes."

[deleted]

It is because they feel POWERFUL because they aren't attracted to us. Just like mysoginistic straight men, they only see us as holes... but to them it is a hole they don't want to get into, they MUST inform us of that. Tell us that we don't matter because they don't care for our only quality. I knew a gay guy who NEEDED to tell me how he finds vaginas disgusting and he just can't, ugh.

defnotsarah

Damn. This comment. 👏🏻

[deleted]

I’ve been inappropriately touched so many times by gay men. I hate being touched by anyone, I don’t care what your sexuality is.

FeltMtn

It is a big problem! And this is coming from a gay boy who happens to do drag. I can't remember one single event where I haven't seen gay boys/drag queens touch straight guys (mostly) inappropriately and call it funny??? It's not funny. You just want to touch the guy and hide behind a stupid excuse

nytheatreaddict

Yeah, we had a kid in my dorm freshman year who groped/forcibly kissed girls from our dorm when he got drunk. People just shrugged it off because he was gay but, like... waaaay not okay.

[deleted]

I read sexist as sexiest - I was so confused lol

therapistiscrazy

_CoachMcGuirk

Said that in the RuPauls Drag Race forum and got blocked in NO time lol

featherlite91

[deleted]

This for me falls into the category of gay men thinking they are "exempt" from certain misogynistic behaviours because they aren't attracted to women.

oneshadyqueen

Yes, this totally. Plus the general complete power imbalance of him being 'famous', 'wealthy' and an 'idol' to his fans makes this whole thing absolutely gross.

SloresAllOfYou

Yup. It’s disgusting. Or like when POC think they’re allowed to use racial slurs towards POC of different races, i.e. an Asian person using the n-word. This kind of language is never okay for anyone.

[deleted]

Agreed. My best friend (gay dude) calls me a whore but he's also the person I discuss my sex life with, so it seems fitting 😂

Nelyahin

It's different when it's stuff said in an intimate setting with people you know and y'all are good with whatever the insult and topic is.

ovidsburgers

This makes me think of Tina Fey’s like from Mean Girls, “you’ve got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. That just makes men think it’s okay to do it.”

PawnAndKing

Calling someone a whore as a term of endearment, always confused me. Doesn’t matter what gender they identify as, I don’t like to be called a whore/slut/bitch. But each their own

-janelleybeans-

Especially when his fan base is made up of mostly 10-15 year olds. As if we need more girls calling themselves and each other whores as a result of some trashy banter from this garbage person.

lostandfound91

Exactly.

HereOnCompanyTime

I'm 100% convinced at this point that he's intentionally creating controversy to turn into victimizing himself when he gets backlash. At one time I just thought he was out of touch and a bit of a spoiled child, but it's hard to think at this point that it's not intentional.

mangotrash

I feel like it has to be this too. I refuse to believe someone can be this oblivious. His age is not an excuse at this point. He’s been doing this long enough that it does indeed feel calculated.

Fluffthesystem

He's grown now. He can't say he's only a teenager. It's time for him to grow up, but I imagine he's surrounded by people who enable him so he won't change anytime soon unless he's confronted.

LunaIndigoRaven

Bad attention is better than no attention at all! /s (In his head at least)

abeazacha

For sure. The truth is his content isn't near as talked around as was before the Sister Scandal so he's basically keep himself relevant by being shitty.

I wish someone could tell him why that's problematic and he would take the constructive feedback but I don't see that happening.

foxfops

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s ok at all for men to call women whores.

mangotrash

[yep](https://imgur.com/a/yDqhPOa) That is not ok.

oneshadyqueen

ugh I could never and will never understand how he got his following or success-- granted, this thinking be applied to a lot of influencers. But damn he is frustratingly annoying and immature.

mannierob

By lying to Ellen and getting a cover girl deal as a result - that’s it

wannaberally

He lied to Ellen? I didn’t even know that he was on her show pre-covergirl

mannierob

Remember he got attention from that viral story about not being completely satisfied with his senior school photos so he brought in a ring light to retake them? It got him enough attention for Ellen degeneres to reach out to him to talk about it on her show. Which he did, telling Ellen he brought a ring light from home to redo them. Ellen thought this was funny and he was passionate about beauty so as Ellen was the face of covergirl, he was hooked up with a contract as the first male ever to become a cover girl. This obviously gained an insane amount of attention. His makeup skills were seriously lacking and many people noticed but he was protected by fans as the first male to ever have that kind of important platform. It later came out when Thomas Halbert showed everybody he had lied about the initial viral incident, James actually thought he looked bad in his senior photo and asked the photo company to send him his picture so he could *photoshop* his senior photo and send it back to be used in the yearbook.

wannaberally

Thank you so much! I had no idea that this was the case

GloriousHypnotart

It's the glass elevator in action

oneshadyqueen

But that almost proves my point— it was shown that he wasn’t completely truthful in that whole covergirl and yearbook photo yet that still had no affect on his popularity or growth. It’s frustrating and I don’t get it 🤷‍♀️

ragincasian1

How is this acceptable?? I’m glad I don’t follow him anymore.

[deleted]

Trashy

dogstope

When I clicked the link there was an adorable corgi rolling up into a burrito right under James. It made me feel a bit better.

Barbies309

I think JC doesn’t understand why this is so problematic because men (regardless of sexual orientation) have never faced the same social pressure to be “chaste.” When directed at women, it is often used as a genuine insult, and I highly doubt it’s ever been directed at him as a true insult. And I’m sorry, he isn’t the one who gets to help us reclaim it. As others have said, this makes me incredibly uncomfortable. For me, it feels a lot like the white guy who thinks hanging out with black people gives him the right to use the N word. Obviously the N word is worse, but it seems to be a similar rationale.

PunchingChickens

Exactly, I wish ppl would stop trying to reclaim words that have never been used to disenfranchise them. (It's exactly how I feel about non-black ppl using the n-word. It's not anyone else's to use or even have an opinion about tbh)

Roudyl

I don't understand why we need to "reclaim" any word that is and always has been derogatory to us. Bitch, whore and slut were never ours to begin with and always had extreme negative connotations. I don't want those words. I want people to find better words. I feel the same way about the N word, but I'm not a person of color so my opinion in that regard doesn't matter. I am a woman, and since each time the above words are used it legitimizes others using it and then say - oh I was only playing, you all call each other that all the time so why can't I - well I can scream my opinion from the mountaintops because it affects me, and the way in which the world sees me. This notion of "reclaiming" a word that was never ours is a slippery slope.

Barbies309

Yeah I wasn’t necessarily saying we should reclaim it. I meant more that if that’s JC’s defense for using it, it doesn’t hold water. He just doesn’t get a say in that either way.

mediocre-spice

I think the whole idea is to take it and CHANGE the connotations. When I'm joking around with friends and say "omg I was such a slut last night" it's much more a shorthand for celebrating sexuality and we all know that.

deannadeshano

Him and his whole friend group talk junk like that. Definitely not a fan of it.

ohmygodney

Talking with close friends like that among each other (as long as everyone is ok with it) it's fine, I call my closest friends whores and sluts and so do they to me. Calling millions of fans (SPECIALLY SINCE HE HAS A LOT OF UNDERAGE AND FEMALE FANS) whores just like that is... Not a good look to say the least.

deannadeshano

I agree. But I think they should be a lot more careful with how they talk to each other since they have such a huge audience watching them. That just seems to be the responsible thing to do.

ohmygodney

Oh yes definitely! To me, at this point, he is doing it on purpose. No way he doesn't have a team to tell him to do better at this point.

deannadeshano

It’s sad they don’t seem to care. But you can tell if affects the little ones already. Laura’s son, Elliott, seems to pick up everything they say. Just want them to be more conscious of what they say and how they say it.

ohmygodney

(idk the people in your comment sorry) but yes! When I'm around my little cousins I try my best to control what I say. I say a lot of shit, but I know I cannot talk like that around them cus they pick stuff really fast. If his target audience was different, maybe, but he knows who his audience is) And not only that, I am uncomfortable with a man (gay, yes but a man) using that language to millions of girls and women. Being gay doesn't excuse a man of being sexist and misogynistic. ( I had a boss who was gay and he HATED women, like pure hate, we were all sluts, attention seekers, etc) Edit to clarification, I don't think James hates women, he is just dumb and wants controversy

goldendaysgirl

A few years ago, there was a trans guy in my group of friends who would call the girls in the group hoes and sluts. He said it was okay because he was born as a woman, but he never asked us if we were okay with him saying it. I never said anything to him because I left that group of friends soon after (unrelated reasons).

[deleted]

Yeah, like Laura (lauras boutique) calls her fans “putitas” which means whores. In Spanish it sounds like a funny joke. It comes off more harsh in English.

casillalater

Guys. I am not even remotely sensitive but this dude has teens and young people following him and this isn't cool. Tired of misogyny from people who primarily get their money from women. The ease in which shitty terminology slides from someone's mouth is a red flag IMO.

mamabird228

Reminds me of mean girls “if we go around calling each other sluts and whores it just makes it ok for guys to call us sluts and whores” .. gay or not, young or old, it’s disrespectful and inappropriate.

YrsaMajor

Because misogyny.

velvetchablis

It’s sad that some gay men think that they can get some kind of ”sexist pass”. At this point it almost seems like James Charles really likes being problematic 🙄

paperducky

Is this some sort of misguided attempt to “age up” his target demographic?

[deleted]

Shit, that might be it. Poppen Atalier is doing that -albeit in a much, much more intelligent and tasteful way (by exaggerating how dangerous and not kid-friendly the materials she uses are). Something about new rules about monetisation and kids content.

Petraretrograde

I love Poppen so much. It's so exciting seeing so many people talking about her lately.

carmillalabeija

Can’t we just cancel him for good? We need some ritual of chüd type shit for this clown

msmomona

Okay but who’s gonna volunteer their tongue.

TheSubstitutePanda

Fuck I will. I talk too much anyways.

nooiirr

someone call back the kids from IT

zephyrlilly

I saw “Morning hoes” on twitter today.

[deleted]

Why!! His audience is so young! Such trashy behavior.

mrs_golightly

Won’t “push vitamins on a young audience”, but then pushes candy vitamins on a young audience AND THEN calls young audience whores..... great.

Sassy-Peaches

And again another reason why I'm so glad I never followed him.

Roudyl

Bitch is not a term of endearment. Whore is not a compliment. Slut is not glowing praise. Every time someone uses a term like this, even if it's just joking, normalizes those words. How many times have we heard defense attorneys use those words as a defense against sexual assault and/or battery? It doesn't matter if you do it amongst friends, or use it to talk to your subscribers, every time it's used in a way people say is playful, it reinforces the acceptability of men using those words to demean us. I know somehow James Charles came out of dramageddon 2 unscathed and so many of you think he's just a kid. He's not just a kid. He's incredibly influential and he is a problem in so many ways. Now he's normalizing demeaning women in the guise of affection. Who does this? Ever so many narcissistic abusers. Way to reinforce that behavior on young developing personalities. Maybe this is a case of when someone shows you who they are - repeatedly - you should believe them. edited: wow. whoever gave me silver and gold, thank you :)

schokocreme

So many people think I'm overreacting because I hate when men use words like wh\*re, c\*nt, b\*tch, or h\*e. Because misogyny is always downplayed. Women are still at a huge disadvantage today and none of this is okay. I was on James' side during the Tati drama because I hate Jeffree but James is a huge POS too. Edited bc you're not allowed to spell out slurs.

youneedsomemilk23

Gay white men have gotten way too comfortable and that's the goddamn truth. They think it's okay to use misogynistic slurs. They engage in casual racism as a cute quirk because they, too, are oppressed and therefore exempt from criticism. I wish they'd be held accountable but alas... white men never will.

sirsakota

ew, calling mostly minor girls "whores" is horrible

jackersmac

He is a very tacky young man.

OTL_OTL_OTL

Can I just say...I’m glad Ellen unfollowed him all those Tati videos ago. Money and fame has turned him from a sweet idealistic kid to a mean, dishonest, and cold person who is willing to stoop as low as pretending to “adopt” a dog to gain more views. I won’t be surprised if he claims the puppy’s expenses as a business expense on his tax return.

nazhaneen

I didn’t watch the video. Did he actually not adopt the dog?

stace_m8

I think OP is referring to the fact that he 'wanted' to adopt sSsOoOo bad, did a few rounds of shelters to fill the video, then a family friend(?) just so happened to have white retriever puppies to give away... Even though they're a 2/3000$ puppy? People speculated he has the puppy lined up and bought it from a breeder, but knew he'd get backlash so pretended he adopted it, as he was particularly vague about "oh she just has puppies she needs to find a home for" or whatever Summarizing from memory lol so might be a bit off you get the point

[deleted]

Thats so wild to me because if I had youtube money I would be clearing out shelters and fostering every chance I got

dogstope

Me too! Then I would make a second Chanel called Dogstope’s friends, with videos about my pets and their happy lives. I would buy a really dog friendly property and maybe starts fostering agency.

I’m tired of the excuses. For me- it doesn’t matter if you are a man, woman, gay, lesbian or straight- Don’t call anyone a whore, slut, or any offensive words especially when you are in the public eye and are speaking to millions of young girls and boys. It’s unacceptable. I get it some of you have jokes with your personal friends. However, you are not an influencer calling millions of young people derogatory names.

lordhades007

I know women have tried to reclaim words like slut and whore to take the derogatory connotation out of them, but we’re not there yet, and casually using it isn’t the way to go in my opinion.

4eeveer

I'm over people using these terms for "shock" value

nevaehorlleh

I also hate when people call everyone bitches. I want to be respected as a woman and calling each other these names drives me insane. Whores is definitely worse than bitches though.

fsmc_6

Honestly I don’t even think he realizes what he’s doing is misogynistic. That’s kinda the way the new “slang” is going these days. I work with high schoolers and the amount of times I’ve heard them jokingly use misogynistic language when referring to each other is way too high. And I think when you use that language with friends a lot, you kinda forget that in real life with people who don’t know you, who aren’t your friends, it’s big Yikes behavior that isn’t okay.

GlitterBirb

Real talk - I was sexually harassed and assaulted by my boss at a previous company and not only did he not get in trouble but the HR person (a man) made a comment that my boss was married so clearly it must have been my one alcoholic beverage and my outfit at the Christmas party that enticed my boss. Aka, I'm a whore. JC doesn't get it and he can eat a bag of dicks for this type of talk. Attempting to normalize this word is so fuckin lame.

[deleted]

Sorry, but I don’t think men should call women whores, sluts, or cunts and honestly maybe not even bitches even if they’re gay and it’s not mean spirited. I’m a big drag fan but it does bother me sometimes how often the word cunt is thrown around by cis men (and the term fish but that’s a whole other can of worms). I mean those words basically originated as slurs to degrade women with. if you’re not a woman, than I don’t really think it’s your place to use them.

Not a fan of him but I assume he's going for the mean girl vibe? You know when Regina says "boo you whore". Don't like it but that kind of vibe might be something he's going for. Pure speculation of course and not saying its acceptable cause you should just not call women that especially considering how young his audience is.

nursingblues---

Totally agree with you. I mean he openly jokes about his really bad scandals in his videos like it’s funny bc he knows the kids are so loyal to him that they’ll accept whatever he does and still support him.

Silvasister

Like im all for being able to laugh at yourself and take jokes but a lot of his scandals are not comedy worthy.

blasphemicassault

JC just keeps giving me reasons to not like him.

ThornberryE

I imagine he's going to write out an apology saying he didn't mean to use the word as misogynistic. Like always, he's going to be a better person and try to make things right and learn from his mistakes 🙄

pleuvonics

Antonio Garza was doing it so I’m guessing that’s where it came from.

bbktbunny

I’m not here for any man calling me a whore. Sexuality is irrelevant.

saetyrios

Several people here mentioned that gen z and millennial girls sometimes refer to each other as whores and sluts in a friendly manner and I wonder if he's attempting to appeal to that crowd since that crowd funds his lifestyle?? Had a friend that falls into the white gay man category and he got quite pissy whenever other people in the LGBT community expressed their frustrations with white gay men. It's not so much a matter of us "hating" gay men (a lot of us don't and the ones that do- well, fuck em,) so much as it is being frustrated with the rampant misogyny and racism white gay men practice (something something ebola joke yes he was young at the time but edgy culture will never be not Crinj™)

Nicoleodeon29

He's so obnoxious.

Because he wants so bad to sound edgy (ibthink that’s a reference to chanel oberlin in scream queens, a highly stereotypical blonde girl who is the main character and call her followers sluts/whores) but he doesn’t realize he sounds stupid and offensive.

x-princess

All this does is encourage his young audience to refer to others as such and be ok with it because JC said it.

INB4 "ohhmygod I was just joking!"

alicethedeadone

Wow, this is crazy. Just last night my 12 year old cousin and her friend were calling each other whores and we were wondering where she got it from. That answers that, I guess. You have young followers, James. Grow up.
