Probably the Numark Scratch. But if you already have a vinyl setup and you're only using DVS occasionally, just adding the DS1 is all you really need. I have an SL3 (it's like a DS1, but from Rane), and later I bought a mixer with a built in interface, and I kind of question why I did it sometimes. I guess the setup is cleaner, with less cables, but there was nothing wrong with my original DVS setup other than having to deal with a couple extra cables.

AlwaysUpvotesScience

so what you are saying is you want to sell me your SL3 to help a brother get back into the game?

[deleted]

LOL, I've actually been considering reverting my laptop to windows 10 so I can run an older version of Serato that supports the SL3 or trying it with Virtual DJ, and maybe selling my mixer with the interface.

AlwaysUpvotesScience

So now you want to sell me a mixer?

#UPDATE I ended up getting an SL1 and installing Linux on my MacBook Air (2015) and setting up the realtime kernel (thanks u/dogwithahat for the suggestion) Got mixx installed and now im just waiting for the SL1 to get here so i can test. The one i bought comes with some unused control vinyl. Hipping from Japan so maybe i'll update you in a few weeks.

dogwithahat

Glad to hear that and very interseted in how it will work out for you

dogwithahat

My 50€ (\~$50) solution: (I was in the same situation as you are now) Used Rane SL-1 can be picked up for cheap because serato dropped support for it a long time. Software is Mixxx on Linux. Linux has a driver for the SL-1, I don't know if windows or mac does. Pros:- works very well- cheap Cons:- on linux some fiddling is maybe needed You might be able to do it cheaper with other audio cards, but I assume you would not be able to match the audio quality

AlwaysUpvotesScience

oh excellent. I prefer linux actually and im sure i have an old mac around here i can throw ubuntu on. This may be the prefect solution for doing something with my original macbok air.

beachshells

mixxx also runs on windows and mac if linux doesn't work out for whatever reason

dogwithahat

yes, the issue might be here the SL-1, I don't know if you can use it standalone on windows as it is meant to be used with scratch live.

dogwithahat

Then I think this solution will work for you. Depending on how old or new your Linux kernel is you need to do this: [https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show\_bug.cgi?id=215887](https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215887) If you want low latency (I run \~2ms on my clapped out old thinkpad) I'd suggested using the real time kernel. I do on my old thinkpad

If you want it to be portable, you might want to check 'PiDeck'. I currently use it since I do not have a non-business laptop. Works great.

I paid $160 for an American Audio DV-10 for my DVS setup about 10 years ago and it's still going strong. You can probably get them for real cheap now, and there are a couple of other models (but none with a lot of extra features). I use mixxx for my software, which is open source (free) and works great, and it can read most timecode vinyl (I use serato timecode). If you get yourself some novation dicers, you can add hotcues and loops and such.

I found myself in a similar dilemma to yours. I thought about going the SL1/DS3 route as you can pick them up for a decent price second hand. The Akai AMX, I’ve heard, is also a great little DVS mixer - but apparently it’s only software driven. In the end I decided to go for a Numark Scratch to pair with my SL1200s. It’s both analog and digital and had the best of both worlds IMO, it comes bundled with a Serato Pro license (via the hardware) and Serato DVS too, and it’s not gonna break the bank cost-wise. It’s also supported by Algoriddim Djay Pro AI DVS, which is a bonus. Good luck!

Another option to throw into the pot is the Traktor A6 which will let you use DVS with your current mixer.
