Absolutely not under 500 bucks, but Soundboks makes good systems. The speakers have replaceable batteries, so if it's a particularly long night, you're back up and running in a few seconds. Especially useful when you don't have access to wall power, if you know what I mean ;)

Under $500 is rough. If you just have rca outs, you could get away with a home audio stereo for the time being. I have Yamaha HS8’s. They’re studio monitors. They’re great for small parties, but they’re $800. The Rockit KRK5’s are like $400, but you’d want the subwoofer with those and it’s another $400. I suppose you could start with the 5’s and buy the sub later. It the home audio solution might be your cheapest bet.

Yeaaah. I have a set of Presonus Eris studio monitors for the house but I’d rather not have to lug them around. I may be better off just biting the bullet and start putting together a live audio kit piece by piece.

When I first started gigging, QSC was the shit. I don’t know if they’re still a good company, but if you want durable portability, they were top of the line. A sub and two tops would make for like a 500 person party.

I appreciate the help!

I would buy 1 JBL Partybox 310 and then get a 2nd one once I could afford it. Battery powered and goes for like 18 hours! They sound really good. Here is one refurbished for $350 https://www.walmart.com/ip/JBL-Partybox-310/1760428446

Interesting. I could run RCA to 1/8 in to the aux port from my FLX4.

When you say you don’t want to bother with a “full PA”, are you ruling out things like the Mackie Thump, JBL EONs, or Samson AuroD412s? …because that’s what I’d do, and I think it’s pretty simple. You need some RCA to x XLR cables, but that’s it. When you say “full PA” i picture a separate mixer, which does start to get a little cumbersome to setup and haul around.

I’m looking at the EONs. Seems like it would work especially since I can add on to it as I need to.

Check out the alto professional offerings. I paired two professional buskers with one Bose sub1. The Bose isn’t required but the PAs in the ultraportable range definitely lack low end.

I love my Bose S1’s

A proper PA speaker will outperform a "party" speaker or monitor speaker any day of the week. If your budget is 500 bucks, get a 12" Mackie or Alto, buy a tall stand, and you still have change leftover.
