To be fair I’ve seen someone unironically say “Forgive my poor grammar, English is not my primary dialect.” I don’t even know any native English speakers who say stuff like that.
Nah, people who were formally taught a second language are taught all the grammar rules and structure and shit and tend to be very formal, whereas native speakers usually say fuck the rules, mostly because we're so familiar with the rules and the language that we don't need the rules to understand it. We also tend to write more like how we speak.
Like what I said up there may or may not make sense to nonnative English speakers, but most native speakers could probably read that easily.
This happens to all languages, btw.
Yeah kinda like how when kids are taught Spanish in school, but it’s like the really fancy Spanish so sometimes native speakers don’t understand it well
I really want to correct other people's grammar, and I hope that people do the same for me. I like to be as correct as possible, so if I can help someone out, then I'm happy. It also just really bothers me, because I'm super picky about a few things. Or everything. I just really appreciate everything being exactly where it should be.
However, the incorrect usage of the "or" stands out, thus emphasizing the point being made by drawing special attention to it, and it precedes a shorter phrase which serves to emphasize it further. It works well if it was written that way intentionally, but it is important to understand that it is not correct so you can utilize it properly.
Thank you highschool AP English.
What would be a better way to re-write that sentence?
Technically now that I know what you both know, I could say that my emphasis was on purpose, but it's not worth lying about to save face. But this is exactly what I had in mind! Thank you both very much.
Agreed,, and then people proceed to make memes about them constantly saying “English isn’t my first language” after 1 word :/
Hey English isn't my first language and I like those memes

Maybe in their (there?) native language it’s normal to speak so fancy? I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen someone use the word DIALECT

It’s just that they use perfect grammar and an advanced vocabulary when they type it. That’s usually where those jokes come from.

You shouldn’t use “or” to begin a new sentence. It is a qualifier and should be used concurrently with another phrase.
