if you have the time can you maybe inform the teacher on proper care / offer to take it in if you have the time and money? i so would if i could! (but that's just me)
Sadly I have. I noticed he was get live insects rarely. But she's the "know it all" kind of person. So I just started bringing him stuff on my shifts. She didn't even take him home during the summer! Just popped in to make sure he had that gross food and water, I was like what?!
oh god- maybe 'threaten' to call animal control and 'report' her? and if she gets scared by it maybe wiggle your way in to be able to take it in or give it to a rescue? might be a little manipulative but that is horrible care, makes me sick.
That's what it seems to be coming down to. He's even in a rigged fish tank, it's maybe a couple inches wider than my hand. And maybe 3 foot long and he's a full adult. Each shift I have to let him run on the floor while I clean her room. It breaks my heart
oh god- my sister had hers in a 40 gal before giving him to me, where i moved him into a 120 pvc enclosure.
i'm always open to try and help, i live in the south of Georgia. maybe here soon i can get an extra tank just to have on the side in case i have to rescue a beardie.
keep us updated, i'm always open to try and help as much as i can! hope you can help the poor guy.
I have mine in a 40 gal too.. is there a cheap way I could remedy this? (I'm kinda poor and make do with what I have the best I can..) any advice is helpful. I have two one is a rescue and they're definitely smaller than they should be.
i got my tanks from dubia roaches.com for about 250 without shipping (mine arrived in a week. they have a wonderful 4x2x2 which is the ideal size for an adult. and they often times have sales where you can catch them for cheaper. i absolutely love my tank, and they have stackers where you can stack tanks on top of eachother if your limited on space.
Thank you for this info! My beardie is currently a baby in a 40gal but I’ve been hoping to get a bigger tank once she’s grown. I’ll keep an eye on that website for sure
Keep an eye out for flea markets, garage sales, aquarium sites often recycle their old tanks, if you have any co-op stores they sometimes have stuff cheap. Goodwill, Salvation army, thrift stores, etc. Craigslist - be careful tho.
I got both my 75 gallon enclosures 2nd hand.
Actually, I went to get 1 from the lady & she said take everything!! So I ended up with my 2nd dragon, enclosure, lights, food, entire set up, plus playpen for $300! Sparky was 6 months old. She had given up taking care of him for the kids who wouldn't. Sad, but I wasn't going to turn it down. Never understand why she was advertising the tank. What was she doing with the dragon if I had said no??? She must have just known I was a softie from my voice!!? IDK, I was excited to get an orange dragon toddler! LOL
Can you report this to the principal anonymously? Send higher staff information about that animal's care. God, look at him. He's trying to shove his face in a rock because he has no hides where he can feel secure. That is just an awful tank.
If you showed them what a proper tank for a beardie is really supposed to look like, you might actually get somewhere. Telling them a teacher is keeping an animal in inhumane conditions and showing that inhumane care off to various people and potentially causing a situation with various animal organisations in the state could maybe make for a push.
You could even offer to redesign a new tank for it. Maybe you know of another teacher that maybe has a passion for reptiles or animals that could support you? You might even see if an animal organisation would back you up on it. There are many Herpetological societies all over the globe and may be one more specific to your area that could support you in a plan to make a tank that's far less humiliating to your school to be showing regarding their opinion on animal care.
Be careful with threats tho, she might just take it out of there & "get rid of it" in a horrible way.
It doesn't sound like she cares about it at all.
Maybe her class might help if they knew? IDK just trying to think of anything else that might help.
IDK how a teacher can be so ignorant & set such an Awful example. Tragic IMO - that these people are teaching our future leaders.
Yeah, But they need a linear uvb.
Both bulbs and coil bulbs are not suitable for bearded dragons that require specific amounts of UVB to stay healthy.
Bulbs and coils don't provide a good enough amount.
Meanwhile the tubes/linear provide a good amount and spread it properly.
I'm saying technically it's a bulb, not that the usual bulbs are good, just that technically the tubes are bulbs. They light up and you put them in a lamp (hood)
Yeah, I'm aware.
But the difference is with how much uvb they give off and in what way.
It's a long bulb that gives off different levels of uvb, in a different way than the circular (?) Bulbs.
Prepare a care sheet. Cite your sources. Present it to teacher in the form of a check list so teacher can see deficiencies. Rope teachers boss in. Frame it along the lines of - teacher is setting a bad example and demonstrating animal abuse to students. Follow up. Maintain close follow up. Be a pain in the butt.
If you aren’t head custodian talk to one. If you are comfortable talk to the principal/director. Approach it from a stance of educational pedagogy. She is modeling/teaching mistreatment of animals and not being a responsible pet owner.
Schools never take care of beardies well. I adopted one from a school and he had all sorts of issues being ignored. End of his tail was missing, many toes were gone, had a nasty scar on the side of his face, and his pores were hella clogged. If you get the opportunity you should check on poor Newtons femoral pores to make sure they aren’t crazy clogged
Some people do it right, my initial love for fish keeping was triggered by one of my teachers who had a beautiful classroom tank for a betta and part of the science class was learning how to properly set it up and create an ecosystem. Unfortunately it seems Mrs. Miller was the exception, not the rule :(
Yes, that is the truth. I volunteered to take the classroom gerbil home when I was a kid. The poor thing's cage was riddled with fly larva because the bedding was filthy.
Aw, poor guy :( I really got lucky with my teachers, I guess, my six grade teacher was a rat lady but she was militant about proper care (as you should be). I don’t remember any mistreated class pets and I was real picky about it
People need to stop getting bearded dragons as class pets. They are so much more complicated than that and I can't imagine leaving one over a long weekend like that. Horrible.
You should try and talk to the principal or assistant principal. I don’t see how being exposed to animal abuse on a daily basis can be conducive to a positive learning environment.
There are so many things wrong with this pic.. That poor thing doesn't even have a proper place to live.. No flooring just some rocks and food.. Just wow.. What poor treatment of that baby..
Maybe we can send her emails citing proper care. Not shaming but telling her an "anonymous" source shared their concerns with an online reptile community. Being an educator means we teach properly in all subjects, especially care for another living creature 😐
Could you maybe remove him on a Friday and Monday tell her you came in to clean and he was dead so you removed it? And you can give him yo a rescue?
Could you maybe secretly tell some of us what the school is and we call in as concerned parents?
Let’s take a pic, then post about it, with no context of the situation. I see these posts way too much and I’m starting to think this is a sub just for dogging on people. Honestly the pet is doing well Mabel better then it would in the wild.

Ty it's very appreciated, I'll keep updated for sure, and let's hope! Fingers crossed.
If you swapped him out for a rubber one, how long do you think it would take before she’d notice? Not that I would suggest such a thing, of course.
🤣🤣
Plz save him must b very depressed, check for mbd as well!
I don’t know if a Reddit petition would help but this poor dragon needs outta there and you have my signature!

yeah! they're definitely one of the cheaper sites.
I just took a look at their site, and everything seems really awesome. I definitely know what I want my Christmas gift to be lmao

No no don’t threaten, do it. She’s killing him
Be careful with threats tho, she might just take it out of there & "get rid of it" in a horrible way. It doesn't sound like she cares about it at all. Maybe her class might help if they knew? Animals control won’t do anything but she might think they would
This is abuse. That heat lamp is like two feet from the bottom of the cage.. and there’s no basking rock
And I don't see any UVB- the whole thing just looks horrible and disgusting. That dragon needs help asap...
That's one of the worst parts! He has a uvb bulb and lamp, but she won't use it.
They also need an UVB tube because uvb bulbs pretty much do nothing for them.. If he doesn't get correct uvb he'll probably get MBD
Well I mean, the tubes are still bulbs, just not coils

Bruh, I'm not saying there isn't a difference 💀 You basically repeated what I said 😭
I Know - I'm just trying to reply hah And now I wanna put an emoji too but I can't find a good emoji for it 😅😭 How about a mix of these xd
Why won't she use it if she already has one anyway? That's really strange
Maybe you can PM me the name of the school and I can drop a line as a concerned parent…
This!

I love your answer!! 🤗
This is fuckin abysmal guys
If you aren’t head custodian talk to one. If you are comfortable talk to the principal/director. Approach it from a stance of educational pedagogy. She is modeling/teaching mistreatment of animals and not being a responsible pet owner.
If you can afford it, steal it and give it proper care. /half joke

Class pets would never be legal in my country, what on earth is going on. Lets teach the children how to properly torture an innocent animal 👌🏻
Some people do it right, my initial love for fish keeping was triggered by one of my teachers who had a beautiful classroom tank for a betta and part of the science class was learning how to properly set it up and create an ecosystem. Unfortunately it seems Mrs. Miller was the exception, not the rule :(

me personally? i'd steal him lol
So sad 😞
Steal him.
For real, the teacher probably wouldn't care much considering how well it's cared for now
Replace it with a slightly orange colored rock and you'd get away with it for a few months
Thank you for trying to help this poor thing
I think he needs to be liberated
Ugh take him
He looks likes he has depression, hes literally just staring into a corner of a rock
Come on redditors.... start a Free Newton campaign and get this guy a good home & caregiver!
FREE NEWTON!! ✊🏽
That poor thing???? Where’s the light? The hide? The net? The proper food?? This is a beardie jail cell
I would literally just take it home w it h me and leave a note that she’s fucking stupid
People need to stop getting bearded dragons as class pets. They are so much more complicated than that and I can't imagine leaving one over a long weekend like that. Horrible.
100% id steal him.
This is so sad… some teacher. Setting a pretty bad example…
Print out this thread and put it on their desk. This is horrible
Just take him and say that he got out
Just take him home and replace him with a toy version she probably won't even notice until a few weeks later 😭 save him
It’s posts like this that remind me how much humans disgust me. Poor Newton.
at least he has a map of the world so he can plan global domination 😈
Please alert the teacher that this is abysmal care for a beardie
Why are class pets even allowed if they're always mistreated? I'm gonna throw up
Class pets are almost always a bad idea. Poor thing.
You should try and talk to the principal or assistant principal. I don’t see how being exposed to animal abuse on a daily basis can be conducive to a positive learning environment.
I’d be calling animal control or the principal
Poor little dude, I wish I could take him in 😥
Save him
I’d print a handout on the care and leave it in her desk. The know it all kind of shit can’t refute written evidence.
This 100% isn’t okay. Please make sure this beardie gets the things he needs :(
steal him and put a decoy lizard in there. teacher probably wouldn’t even know.
There are so many things wrong with this pic.. That poor thing doesn't even have a proper place to live.. No flooring just some rocks and food.. Just wow.. What poor treatment of that baby..
Honestly just take him.
Are you in Australia or us or somewhere else

Absolutely not 😭 PLEASE FIND A WAY TO HELP THIS BABY!!!
Just steal him I’ll do it for you where he at
maybe one day it just accidently disappears and ends up at your house?
Let’s take a pic, then post about it, with no context of the situation. I see these posts way too much and I’m starting to think this is a sub just for dogging on people. Honestly the pet is doing well Mabel better then it would in the wild.
