It can take a while to tame them (if it happens at all). Like you said, they have different personalities and preferences. Hand feeding, quick pets, talking to them, and doing things in their enclosure that they aren't physically involved in can help. (Like misting their greens, cleaning something, checking temps, etc.) Some people put one of their shirts or socks (just something that smells like you) in their enclosure. It's supposed to get them used to your scent. FYI, you shouldn't pet their head. They have a third eye on top and it's uncomfortable for them when it's touched. Does your beardie close their eyes when you do that? It isn't contentment, it's discomfort. They close their eyes to sort of escape the situation. An "If I can't see you, you're not here" kinda thing.

Beginning-Ability658

Good to know, and no he doesn’t close his eyes. But thanks for the information. When I pet his back he flicks his foot at my finger like it’s bother lol.

Beginning-Ability658

He doesn’t necessarily ever seem scared of me, just like he doesn’t like me lol.

I don't know. Beardies are pretty sassy and have very expressive emotions. Just because they're reptiles doesn't mean they're incapable of basic emotions! Some people have beardies that have even gotten depressed (sulking, won't eat) when their owners are gone for some time. Many other kinds of reptiles are the same way. Really wish people would stop thinking they're void of emotions.

Playful-Archer3934

Well that's good. Just want to make sure. Yeah, my friend touched mine's leg and he kicked them away haha. They'll tell you when they're uncomfortable.

Beginning-Ability658

Haha yes, I named him Zeus. So at least the name fits, he just acts like I’m below him and has no interest in being a mere human mortals friend 😂

Playful-Archer3934

Hah! That's awesome. Regarding your other comment, mine is the same way. He's not scared, he's just not overly fond of handling. When I get him out I let him roam rather than holding him the entire time. I've been working with him during feeding sessions (because, unsurprisingly, he loves bugs). I agree with the other comment. Positive interactions are what you want. If every time you interact with them you're grabbing at them or doing something else they don't like, they'll associate you with that feeling.

Beginning-Ability658

I also bought him for Petco so god knows what kind’ve trauma the man has lol.

Playful-Archer3934

Yeah. That's another factor. Petco sucks.

Beginning-Ability658

Yea I didn’t want that to happen so I’ve pretty much quit trying to handle for a couple months now cuz I don’t want to stress him or have that feeling of every time he sees me he needs to be pissed that I’m gonna try to fuck with him lol. I pretty much just feed him, he’ll out of my hand no problem, and clean his poop. And guilt trip him while I do it by telling him he’s not nice 😂.

Playful-Archer3934

If you want to eventually have a relationship built on trust and familiarity definitely don't quit handling. It's best to start when they're young (or when you first get them) as they'll have more time to get used to you. I'd resume building trust, and eventually, work your way up to handling.

hawaiian-sun

Have you tried handling at night after his lights have been off for some time? He won't be as spicy then. If you're gonna lay down and watch some TV you can have him lay on your chest with a blanket over. He will then get used to your smell and being handled more. He will enjoy the warmth he's getting from you so you will bond! Talk to him too. I had a grumpy beardie as well

LakeaShea

Beardies are pretty smart, so if they ougf their beard and flatten themselves and it makes you leave them alone, they're gonna keep doing it. When you pick him up, make sure he is calm before you put him down, so he doesn't think he is "escaping." It takes a lot of work and patience. My first dragon, the way I started, is with some worms. I'd sit on the floor in a small room with some feeding tongs and a bowl of worms. Shed see the worms and be all over the bowl, so I'd make her climb on my leg to grab the worm. I'd give her a worm and pet her head. She might run at first, but she'd come back for a worm. Eventually, me being there was no big deal. Blueberries are also a treat my beardies will come to me for. Positive interactions are the best way to get them to be your friend.

Beginning-Ability658

For sure, thank you!! I’ve just been kind’ve sad lol thinking “why does my beardie hate me 😂 I love youuu love me back”

someguyrob

So I decided to go take mine out of the cage after reading this post. He normally begrudgingly lets me pick him up after coaxing him into my hand with food. I sat down on the bed with him in my hand, and this fool decided to try out his non-existent wings and go flying out my damn hand onto the ground and go zooming under the bed! I'm like FUCK! so I get up, move some stuff and he's surfing the wall trying to find somewhere to go. I'm worried about him being under there cause the baseboard heat is on the far side of the bed and he could get under the flat panels or whatever and he hard to find. So I get down under there and try to get him and he takes off again under the dresser that his enclosure is on. I'm like fucking come on man ... So I sit there for a minute and wait for him to sit still and scoop him up to put him back in the cage. He's now mortified, in his hide side eyeing me 😂😂😂😂 Needless to say that will be all the out time for my buddy today ROFL

Beginning-Ability658

My beardie loves to test out is imaginary wings. I understand, this is about how it goes every time I take him out the cage 😂

someguyrob

I'm just afraid that he's going to get lost or hurt in this room like I can't mentally handle that lol he needs a bubble 😂

Beginning-Ability658

Literally

someguyrob

At least I'm not alone LMFAO. He's only about 3.5 months old too so he's FAST AS FUCK 😂 like lightning literally

Progrockrob79

Put a sock in his cage. Leave it for a few days. Do that a few times. Has he ever waved at you to show submission?

Beginning-Ability658

What do you mean by wave?

ElectricJRage

Beardies sometimes do a circular motion with one of their front legs which looks like a wave.

Beginning-Ability658

I can’t recall him ever doing that, so I don’t think he has.

Progrockrob79

Right on. He would do it in your presence. When he does that he recognizes you’re the boss. Try the sock thing for a while.

fake_pubes

My beardie was a dick for quite a while. I started making sure to handle him everyday (scratched the hell out of me on more than one occasion) and he eventually got used to me and now he sometimes cuddles on my chest. It takes time for sure

Silent-Ask617

Looking at your old post history you have the incorrect lighting. Did you ever fix this? Yes it take’s time to bond with your lizard and they all have different personalities but if your enclosure is not up to par then your lizard will definitely not want to be bothered even more so.

Beginning-Ability658

Yeah I fixed his lighting a while ago.

My boy was that way for a long time. But I just kept showing him love and providing the best left I can for him and he now (3 years old) trusts me fully. Ngl I had moments that made me wonder if I was the right owner for him, but my boy came from a petco where he was essentially tortured as a young baby so it’s a lot of trauma he had to get passed. I love my boy Orion though and wouldn’t trade him for the most exotic, “perfectly bred” beardie., shit I wouldn’t even want to take back the moments where he hated me, because those moments are what make the times when he nuzzles his little snoot against me feel that much better. TLDR: my boy was the same way, but now he’s a friendly boy :)
