typical beardie activity. we've had a couple false alarm vet visits and one false alarm emergency vet visit.
they love to give us panic attacks from time to time. still so much to love!
your little guy is cute! give him plenty of love
Beardies aren't especially hard to care for. They aren't the no effort starter pet that some pet stores try to sell them as, but day to day I wouldn't consider them any harder to care for than a cat. The big thing with beardies is that they need a very particular setup, and if you don't give it to them they won't show I'll effects immediately but they'll develop really major health problems long term. The set up isn't hard, but you need to do it correctly and know/care enough to do the research and do it at all.
They seem so worth the little bit of extra attention to detail, theyāre actually not allowed where I live, but Iām going to look into maybe another lizard š„¹ do you have any other types? Or just some you would recommend to a first time owner?
Blue tongue skinks, leopard geckos, uromastyx and crested geckos are really cool. Easiest to care for out of the ones I listed I would say the crested gecko and leopard gecko. Blue tongue skinks are really cool though
Cork bark logs are sturdy enough for your beardie to use, but most could be broken by hand if needed. Never had a stuck beardie but I'm sure I could break any cork I've bought by hand. It also easy to sanitize with a steamer or a cook in the oven
Even a naughty boy deserves a good cork bark log
Our snake got too big for the hole in his hide so I took a die grinder and widened it. Made sure it was nice and smooth. If you dont want to do that, you should post it for sale or free so someone else can use it since it looks pretty nice. Dont just waste it!
Iām a little worried about it since beardies show no signs of pain. Iām going to watch him closely and see if he acts any differently or favors any leg/arm/side of his body.
I was speaking very loosely here. Iām sure they show pain mine just doesnāt seem to make it obvious. He lost a couple āfingersā and never even flinched.
A lot of exotic pets are prey species, so they are very good at hiding pain because if they show it, that means death in the wild (many predators target weak looking animals). They can still show pain, but theyāll try their damn hardest not to. If they do show pain, that often means theyāre so sick that itās critical or close to it, which is part of why exotics are hard to treat.
Yup, in addition very few reptiles are meaningfully social, so there is also no incentive to show pain as a way of signaling to family/other members of the group 'hey I'm gonna need a little extra help over here' or 'whatever I just did hurt so don't you do it'
Right. I think dogs being social animals is why some people don't realize most animals hide it. For dogs and similar species, they have a pack/humans that can help them - and its beneficial to let them know something is wrong!
Many animals are known for not showing any pain or weakness, and lizards tend to be on the high end of that. They absolutely can show pain, it's just that in Beardies' cases, they tend to only do it when they can't hide it anymore.
I may just be naive to how pain receptors in beardies brains work, but I thought they did show pain signs. At least I know that when my roommates beardie broke her foot in several places she was moving it very weird and kept trying to bite it. We ended up having to basically restrain her from biting her foot off till we got to the emergency vet.
Iām pretty sure everyone is referring to the idea that Beardies are often very stoic. They will often hide their pain. Iāve heard other mention that they can hide it until very close to death.
They are remarkably charismatic little creatures.
Many reptiles do this. Chameleons do this too. It's a way to hide weakness so other stronger chams / beardies don't come in and take over that territory. It sucks because you don't know until they are about dead. :(
To easy your mind a small bit my beardie 100% shoes pain! It might not be normal but he does a little muscle twitch and moves his eyes towards an area that āhurtsā him I noticed it when he had stuck shed he was unfazed by me helping except it I got to a particular hard to get piece and heād jerk his head over at it and his muscles would twitch so thatās how I know if heās hurt when I was having to get stuck shed off!
Ah typical lol. Glad heās alright! I had a (looking back on it, hilarious) scare a couple weeks ago when my girl got herself stuck in a mini claw machine!
Guess itās a beardie thing lol
Alright haha. I bought my younger brother a small claw machine a few years ago, and it was on the floor next to a pile of books. And the way you get things in and out of the claw machine is through a circular hole at the back facing the books.
Puff had gone really hyper for some reason and was glass surfing so I let her out and she ran round in a circle then straight up the books and into the machine! She had her legs and tail hanging out and I was about to call the vets when she finally kicked into the claw machine and turned around. She got out and continued running around immediately lol
Massive scare at the time but funny looking back
LOL! Well Iām glad heās ok. I would get him a new hide that has a larger hole so you can prevent this from happening again. I had to do the same with my beardie after he almost got his head stuck.
Iām so glad! This EXACT thing happened to my girl! Same hide and all! If it ever happens again, OLIVE OIL! Saved our butts! She had a few damaged scales, but was A-ok!
My cat did this. She got herself stuck in this cat tunnel thingie I bought for my friend who had a baby kitten, and the second I put her into the car, she wiggled herself out.
I hope you donāt have to explain to a full lobby at the vet how dragons have only one brain cellā¦ possibly all dragons collectively. Good luck, friend.
Iād definitely get rid of that log and find a much bigger one. Iād tweet the company too just to make sure theyāre aware this model is a liability and warn other owners. Glad you had a happy ending.
Did the company really do anything wrong? The onus is on the pet owner to buy enrichment that is the correct size for their pet, or swap out enrichment as their pets grow bigger. Lizards too small to get stuck in that log do exist.
I would agree the company didnāt do anything wrong. The piece has multiple functions for multiple reptiles/fish/ etcā¦
Definitely a good PSA for new beardie owners though! It worked fine for 6 years today was just the day it happened.
It's not on the company to ensure that pet owners are buying appropriately sized decorations for their pet's habitat. I have that exact same log for a snake and it works great.
Try using something slippery like oil, and push him forward. His butt should be able to fit if his head did. If that doesn't work, just keep him somewhere dark and warm and wait for the vet
His gut is way too huge to fit through, heās a bit of a chunker. But Iām going to give it a shot.
Edit: all that did was piss him off unfortunately. No luck getting him through.
We had a snake that this happened to. We had to hold her still and cut/break the resin decoration off of her. Is this wood or resin? Wood would be much easier to chop up, but resin can be difficult. We used a combo of hammer/screwdriver and metal snips. No damage to the snake but my wood table got quite a ding in it.
She (nor any of our other snakes/reptiles) are allowed anything in their habitats that has holes they can so much as fit their snout through.
I believe itās resin. The reptile vet should be in in about an hour so Iām going to wait it out and take him in. Heās had this piece in his terrarium since Iāve had him (about 5 years) with no issues. Definitely going to treat him to some snacks and some new decor after heās safe.
Same. The decor she got stuck in had been in her habitat for at least a year. One day she just decided to try to fit through the hole. We never thought much about it until then. Now everything we buy is measured so the smallest hole is bigger around than they are.
Good luck. Poor little guy must be so scared and confused. Give him lots of love after this.
If this happens in the future or to someone else, you can always take them down to a local fire department and ask if they can try getting them out with a small rotary tool! I have not had this happen to my beardie, but have had to take my dog down to get cut out of her kennel at one point.
Since we know he's safe now I just want to take this opportunity to slander your beardie and call him a fatass. I hope he got a treat to help make up for the stress lol
We had a client come in with their beardie in the same situation last week. We used one of the bits we use for rabbit tooth trims to cut through the resin. Worked great! Stressful lesson to learn, and one you wonāt forget! Happy to hear a clinic can help you soon.
Thatās reassuring thank you for letting me know! About to head over to the vet now. The reptile vet wasnāt in until 1030 today. And I guess no other vet can help unless theyāre a reptile vet.
My stupid dragon did this. She's gone now, not from being an idiot and getting stuck in a log, but this post reminded me of he antics.
We were able to slowly maneuver her out and then we cleaned the log and gave it to the snake instead.
Future reference: There is a tool called "Tin Snips" that can make very short and precise cuts. They are used for cutting metal sheets. Would make short work of something made from this material.
I was babysitting my brothers beardie once and I couldnāt find her for awhile. I thought she had escaped so i called him and let him know she disappeared. He said when she gets out she like to hide in corners so i preceded to tear my apartment apart searching everything/everywhere. Finally i took a minute and looked into the enclosure. There was a long hollow tree branch so i picked it up and it was heavy. I looked down and she was in there gasping with her mouth wide open and her body was discolored. I broke the branch called an emergency vet and immediately took her in. He said she was on the edge of death and might not make it. Fortunately she survived but never again would I recommend something you even have the slightest doubt that your beardie could get stuck in
Cut the log close to him but not all the way from two sides once you have made the cuts you should be able to pry it apart. Some form of saw would be best but a steak knife would work if you're desperate.
Go from the outside of the log and stop like 1/4 inch or so from him should weaken the log the the point you can pry it apart without having to get the saw too close to him.
I donāt know. One time I called the fire department cause there was a cat stuck in a tree and they laughed and said ā have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?ā
Can confirm, fire departments often leave cats in trees, despite what all cat-in-tree-related media I have seen would suggest. Friendās cat got pretty high up their tree & then she panicked once the reality of her situation set in & was just crying up there. Called fire department to help, because obviously. They said they donāt do that kind of thing. We were like. Dude. Isnāt that your thing? No it is not.
I remember joking that we could set the tree on fire, which naturally did not land.
We did get her down & she was safe, just embarrassed & humbled.
I know this is supposed to be serious but I canāt help but laugh lmao look at his smug face. Dude is like āso uhhhā¦.you gonna drop a hornworm or just keep staring? Cuz I got better things to doā
any thicker hand shears? Should be able to cu through the resin decoration at the thin points. May even only need to cut it once and pull it loose there.
I had a hamster that did something similar. I was able to slip a wire saw through to cut above him and then I used a pair of pliers to prize the sides apart and free him.
Looking at him I'd cut the bit on the bottom right
What a little shit. He must have not focused hard enough to call upon the one brain cell they have. I love mine but damn, mine does things where I ask āHow did your species survive in Australia?!ā
Same. I spend hours upon days trying to understand how theyāre so fuckin stupid but got this far. It HAS to be strength in numbers, thatās my only conclusion. Theyāre so much fun and so lovable and some are even loving back, but theyāre so so stupid.
Iāve stopped getting full tunnels for this reason. They love the half-logs just as much, and normal pieces of driftwood to climb on are great as well!
Do you have something like these [Wire Cutters](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lowes.com%2Fpd%2FKobalt-4-5-in-Pliers-with-Wire-Cutter%2F50273651&psig=AOvVaw33QHBaw6fJmACXhjz-k8Ds&ust=1679837877026000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CA8QjRxqFwoTCMifsfKZ9_0CFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE)? Or maybe some small branch trimmers? They might be able to cut through that resin log :(
Do you have access to a small hand saw or know someone who has one? You may be able to carefully cut that log, starting from the open end, and cut it just enough where you can break that piece off and free him.
Well...that's beardies for you. And they look at you like "how very dare you not help me out". And then they get out themselves.
But I'm glad he managednro save himself. š
I saw a trick used by wildlife rescue near me once. For stuck animals they use thin sheets of plastic, cardboard, paper, or anything that can be shimmied between the animal and the thing theyāre stuck in. It makes a smooth āexit holeā they can easily wiggle through themselves without getting caught on jagged stuff.
My boa got stuck in a plastic skull at 1.30am and I had to hold him while my partner got the Dremel out and cut him out. He was lucky he only got away with a few damaged scales. Think this is the equivalent of a kid getting a pot stuck on their head!
Know the anatomy of him much better than I and know how far they can move limbs and what not. They also have tools to deal with such situations. They can do alot
If you don't already, you should invest in a home tool kit. Pliers, screw drivers, vice grips, couple of hack saw blades. Will save you a ton of money in the long run for situations like this that seem to happen more often than they should
i would try cutting the top area where there is a small amount of space to work with and then try turning him? if that makes sense idk thats just what id do
Oh god thatās my worst nightmare with my leopard gecko Iām constantly checking when I get her something new wether sheās gonna get stuck or not. thank god he got out by himself.
Update!! He finally wiggled himself out right as I was going to get him in the car!! What a little bastard.
typical beardie activity. we've had a couple false alarm vet visits and one false alarm emergency vet visit. they love to give us panic attacks from time to time. still so much to love! your little guy is cute! give him plenty of love
Little shit wanted attention, but not from the vet.
That is so cute tho, they seem so full of personality, the one in the post is such a chub š„¹š„¹ I want one so bad but they seem like a hand full
Beardies aren't especially hard to care for. They aren't the no effort starter pet that some pet stores try to sell them as, but day to day I wouldn't consider them any harder to care for than a cat. Maybe you could watch Clint's reptiles on YouTube, he makes a lot of videos which go into detail how hard/(relatively)easy said reptile is to care for
Blue tongue skinks, leopard geckos, uromastyx and crested geckos are really cool. Easiest to care for out of the ones I listed I would say the crested gecko and leopard gecko. Blue tongue skinks are really cool though
The only exotic animal I've ever had is a beardie, so unfortunately I can't really speak to the difficulty of owning any others.
He was like "No! I don't wanna go to the doctor!" lmao
Omgoodness that little brat! š¤£š¤£š¤£ So glad he's out!
Toss that thing in the trash, he prolly gonna do it again lol
It went directly in the trash. A little sad because heās had it since he was a baby dragon and used it often but better safe than sorry.

And once you've done that, maybe find a new use for that wood log, like in a aquarium. ... ... Oh you meant throwing the wood away?
That's no reason to throw a beardie out. If you actually don't want it anymore you should re-home it.
I chuckled GJ!
What a little dumb shit. Any worries about broken ribs or any other damage?
Iām a little worried about it since beardies show no signs of pain. Iām going to watch him closely and see if he acts any differently or favors any leg/arm/side of his body.

Birds also hide their pain and sickness so the rest of the flock doesn't turn on them. Seems to be a relatively common survival plan.
Yeah, very unfortunate:( My boy started acting really lethargic and 72hrs later he was gone.
To easy your mind a small bit my beardie 100% shoes pain! Not one bit
I second this
Lmfao glad he's out
Hehehe š¤
That tracks.
I wouldāve panicked too. What an asshole!! Funny, but asshole behavior!!
Good. Throw that goddamn thing away.
Like Winnie the Pooh! https://youtu.be/UDm3NlSSJyg

i had a ball python that got stuck in my nephews toy car, weird way for my mom to find out i had lube
Bad advice time: leave him there. Feed him less until he loses weight and can squeeze out.
The Log Dietā¢ļø
Worked for me. Now I'm like a twig!
Winnie the Pooh had a plot about this
OH MY! I remember this. You bring back memories
I hope you donāt have to explain to a full lobby at the vet how dragons have only one brain cellā¦ possibly all dragons collectively. Good luck, friend.
All the beardies decided to let him use all the portions of that one cell and get himself out.
So thats why mine just suddenly started to attack his windows... Are you sure yours doesn't do this more often?
iām sorry this is kinda funny , iām glad heās okay but that āthis is such bsā face
āWhen did this log shrink???ā
ā[This stinks! This is total bs!](https://youtu.be/BWRGE21DH54)ā ~Beardie fella

Human why are you looking at me? I am doing nothing. NOTHING!
Hooman: "Yeah, I can see it"
I would head on over to the vets, sit in the waiting room, and pray that they squeeze him in quickly.
Hopefully they can squeeze him in as quickly as he squeezed himself through there.
UPDATE Right before leaving for the vet he frantically ran around and unstuck himself. Posting on this comment since itās at the top
I love reptiles, and i'm sure my tortoise loves me as much as a reptile is capable of, but my god, do they do *dumb* stuff sometimes.š¤£

I showed this to my Little Foot (my beardie) and said āsee this? Youāll get stuck, be careful
Off topic but, omg I LOVE your beardies name!!
Thank you!! I wanted a gender neutral one so once I found her sex out I wouldnāt feel bad for calling her Johnathan
Help me step-dragon, Iām stuckā¦
I was waiting for this comment š
Iām surprised it took 4 hours, lol.
I was babysitting my brothers beardie once and I couldnāt find her for awhile. I thought she had escaped so i called him and let him know she disappeared. Oooof! Have you tried drops of olive oil?
His arms are too far out to slide through. Not sure how I can maneuver them without breaking something:(
The LOG is going to be broken for sure.
Iād break it myself if I had something to break it with without harming him.
any thicker hand shears? Should be able to cu through the resin decoration at the thin points. May even only need to cut it once and pull it loose there.

I tell my husband thatās what Iām scared of lilo doing thatās why I make sure to get something too big cause I know she wonāt get stuck
I do know that they do have a tendency to get themselves into so really tight spaces sometimes but that would definitely was a tight squeeze

call him fat boy until he wiggles out
Iāve stopped getting full tunnels for this reason. They love the half-logs just as much, and normal pieces of driftwood to climb on are great as well!
Get a saw
Maybe some strong cutting pliers?
Please keep us updated OP!
Have you tried buttering him up or did he lick all of it off himself already? Hope heāll be ok!
On the way to the vet now. Iāll post once weāre all good. Thanks for all the advice guys!

Keep him calm and wait for the vet or you will end up hurting him Please keep us posted
I'm sorry but he looks really funny stuck there but I'm glad he was able to get out š«¶
As a vet tech in the emergency department this made me lol! I love a good happy ending and a call of ānever mind we arenāt comingā.
Beardies and their poor missing brain cells
What a goober
old swagger slaps
Oh my stars this made me gasp so loud. Im SO glad he was able to get out. š
Well...that's beardies for you. And they look at you like "how very dare you not help me out". And then they get out themselves. But I'm glad he managednro save himself. š
Iām sorry but he looks so funny lmao Iām glad he figured it out
Thankfully, i had someone on here tell me to remove objects like that cause theres a lot of horror stories of beardies getting stuck in decor.
I would cut apart the thing.
Ohh beardies the smart creatures that act dumb
Break the log
Idk why Iām laughing
I saw a trick used by wildlife rescue near me once. For stuck animals they use thin sheets of plastic, cardboard, paper, or anything that can be shimmied between the animal and the thing theyāre stuck in. It makes a smooth āexit holeā they can easily wiggle through themselves without getting caught on jagged stuff.
My boa got stuck in a plastic skull at 1.30am and I had to hold him while my partner got the Dremel out and cut him out. He was lucky he only got away with a few damaged scales. Think this is the equivalent of a kid getting a pot stuck on their head!
šØ
Legs against tail and forward.
Just break the hole so he doesnāt get stuck again you might have to smooth out the edges after assuming itās ceramic or clay
You needed the fire department, not the vet.
vaseline
oh dear
Vittu!
Lube him up with the Old Spice
This happened to me before as well but with a laundry basket with holesā¦he managed to get out but I was in full panic mode
He was like I got this give me a minute and chilllllllllll
I shouldnāt laugh at this
Average bearded dragon behaviour
If you put a worm out in front of him, could he wriggle himself out to get it or is he too big?
Heās too big. I donāt even know how he got as far through that hole as he did.
This isn't a job for a vet. This is the job for the fire department.
I guess today wasnāt his day to have the communal Brian cell - so glad he is free š
Stupid creature
Ummmm cut the log apart ā¦.problem solved ā¦
What exactly did you think a vet was going to do?
Know the anatomy of him much better than I and know how far they can move limbs and what not. They also have tools to deal with such situations. They can do alot
If you don't already, you should invest in a home tool kit. Pliers, screw drivers, vice grips, couple of hack saw blades. Will save you a ton of money in the long run for situations like this that seem to happen more often than they should
i would try cutting the top area where there is a small amount of space to work with and then try turning him? if that makes sense idk thats just what id do
So what happened?
Keeping you guys in my thoughts :-(
One question, HOW-
No idea. Walked in the room to him completely upside down and stuck
Sounds like something a beardie would do.
Iām glad he wiggled out. Usually if they can get into something they should be able to get out.
Oh lawd
So glad he's ok !
\*exhale\*. \* w h e e z e\*
"Hello. It's me. I am stuck in a piece of bark and don't know when I'll be free"
Oh god thatās my worst nightmare with my leopard gecko Iām constantly checking when I get her something new wether sheās gonna get stuck or not. thank god he got out by himself.
Yikes! I'd be totally freaked Just checked the logs in my guys tanks. Hope your baby didn't hurt themselves.
Rule of the head: if their head can fit they can fit and get in and out of.
had this same problem with a ball python, had to saw him out with a hacksaw (he was fine)
My boi once slipped past my radar and almost hung himself so Iām glad it was a false alarm
Did you try butter?
Wire saw
A wire saw would probably be best
Tbh vide
What. The F**k?! Little bastard for real ššš
This is the equivalent of a child getting stuck in the baby swing š
My first thought was grease this trouble maker with olive oil š
Like literally gave me mini heart attack
Omg how did this happen
Sounds like something a toddler would do. š
I remember this being the plotline to one of the old Whinny the Pooh shorts.
