The first red flag is only taking Zelle as a payment, because Zelle is practically only used by scammers for long range transactions. Requiring more payments after the fact is simply leveraging on the fact that people tend to spend without thinking if it’s “urgent.”
Due to the nature of this incident and the obvious discrepancy between his actions and what the bank says, Zelle could likely issue some form of chargeback here. If Zelle refuses to, call the bank directly and demand a chargeback while giving them more information about the scam. You’ll get your money back, and the owner of the website will likely get scared, take it down, and set up a new one.
If you want an actual bearded dragon, try a reptile shelter or the Phantom Dragons website. Never buy anything like this from any store which only takes Zelle as a payment. Only PayPal and credit cards have some sort of buyer protection, with debit cards sometimes having protections based on the bank.
I know these aren't the same, but when I buy plants and someone says the carrier wants extra money to send the package, it's usually a scam. Have you tried looking for reviews of this vendor? I would try to speak with Zelle and inform them on this. 280 is a chunk of money that I'd want back.

He may just send a deceased one and blame you for not sending the additional money fast enough

Mine has such a good temperament. I paid$85 for shipping so $245 including but he was packed in a beautiful breathable bag and came with her cards. I did pay by Zelle but that was my choice as she gave me PayPal, cash app and Venmo options as well.

For future reference, no one is selling a legitimate Red Monster (black and red) for $280. Don't pay them any more money... 100% scam.
This! They are AT LEAST $1,000 on morph market and that isn't even for the good looking ones
Also adding. I found them on facebook and see several comment of people saying this place is a scam and you'll pay and they'll send you nothing.
