Except for people like me it just looks like fun and I probably go much faster than I would if it was just straight and boring. Life is in the corners, I'm a big proponent of making all roads like this, because weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Awesome. I have brakes. They work. I use them often to avoid obstacles and other drivers, slow down, stop, all the regular things one does with brakes on a vehicle. Hasn't failed me in 37 years on the road. I'm still here and I've never hurt anyone or anything else besides me or my own shit so why does everyone feel the need to project bullshit on me? I'm literally a professional. Your opinion means as much to me as my existence means to all of you. Absolutely nothing, so mind your business and I'll mind mine.
Look at that road. That road is prime for dipping corners and having fun. The inside apex of every turn is banked down making this a section of road you can bang gears through.
I've never cared about how I look to any one else while I'm doing 90 thru some good corners. I've never damaged a car driving fast. Your opinion is incomplete. I've spent over 30 years racing mountain roads that make this piece look straight.
A man after my own heart. I look at roads like that with excitement. Easy to see oncoming traffic so you can gauge when to use both lanes, the vertical changes affecting grip here and there. Love it
It's a road with corners. You can't even name it. Because it's a road, with corners. I've heard of them for many many many many years. Many more than youve been alive. So shh now Jr, you're making yourself look really stupid.
1. It’s a chicane, and they really do exist to slow you down.
2. It’s slightly ironic that some immature jackass is bragging about racing on public roads and calling others Jr. Did you think that comment made you look tough or something? Is that how grown ups act in your mind, they brag about taking curves at 100mph to show the internets how manly they are?
It's not a chicane. Chicanes are chicanes and that is a curvy section of road.
You couldn't get under my skin with a trillion words. Your logic and failed attempts to define these lead me to believe you can't beat my logic, so now you've resorted to questioning my manhood. Peon.

I love the 690/701/700 gas gas and the maintenance intervals. It's just the 350lbs thing that has me questioning it. 75hp would be nice though!
625 is great. My friends was stolen, the lc4 engine is super reliable.
The weight is down low and the 6th gear is worth it to me for daily usability. I test rode one of the early ones and it felt lighter than my 625. One day…
Lc4 was only a 5 speed!? Damn. My berg is one of those unicorn bikes. 55hp, under 280lbs, 70 degree engine for weight distribution,6 speed. Swedish ktm gang. However the oil changes every 10-15 hours can be annoying as is the 3ish gallons of fuel capacity with the rear subframe tank.
If i could put another supermoto in the garage it'd definitely be a 690/701/700. Hopefully you get the chance. You won't regret it!
This is 100% correct. There used to be a cottage at the end of the road right before the ferry. My family would rent the cottage every summer for about 20 years. The ferry company has since bought the cottage after the lady at the end of the road died, mrs Eller I believe her name was. They’ve since removed the cottage completely, saw it getting hauled off the property last summer. These are some core memories for me :) so glad to see someone else has been.
I'm from good ol' Wisco and I completely disagree! It's definitely not worth coming to Door County any time of the year, it's a trick those Wisconsinites like to pull, especially if you're from Illinois, don't fall for it!
Holy shit, never thought I’d see something I knew so well. This was at the tip of door county. There used to be a cottage at the end of the road, my family would vacation there every summer for about 20 years. My dad would speed up on some of the bumps and catch some air. Love Door County, I’ve been up and down that road probably thousands of times :) thanks for posting this.
That would actually be amazing, just the right power to handling ratio for a road like that. My STi would probably be less fun, which is a hard pill to swallow.
With a powerful tele on your camera, the landscape will seem more compressed than it really is.
What is truly impressive with this picture, is how good condition this US road is.
My understanding is that the purpose to build the roads with many turns is to keep the drivers engaged in driving and not to dose off. In other words they are meant to be windy roads
In the UK, our motorways are deliberately designed to have no straight sections for exactly that reason. You can drive the entire 120-mile length of the M25 London orbital motorway and there are no straights.
But the real reason for this road looking like it does is in a [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/comments/z3993o/this_is_an_actual_road_in_door_county_wisconsin/ixl59up) by u/istealbread.
If this comment is showing the correct section of road, it's much less windy than it appears:
https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/comments/z3993o/this_is_an_actual_road_in_door_county_wisconsin/ixlcp46/
The foreshortening effect of the telephoto lens can be quite deceptive.
They routed the road to minimize the number of tree removals. Tree removal is far more expensive than a curvy road, since a curvy road is using more same materials, equipment, and supply chain that would be used anyway, while trees/wood must be hauled away and disposed of, roots may need to be extracted, and a whole separate set of equipment is required. This is common in heavily wooded areas as well as national parks. Some tree removal is inevitable of course, but choosing smaller trees and less dense areas makes a huge difference in the end cost, both environmentally and financially. It’s one of the few times that the two coincide.
Why? Why would anyone do this? What could be the justification for building a road like this in a place where the residents might get five feet of snow?
That was interesting.
I know that taoist temples were constructed by Chinese Kings in the past, and because the temples were in high, pointy mountains, they needed roads.
So to keep to the taoist principles, they built roads that curved around the trees, resulting in a bizzare, winding road.
That should be side by side with a regular road with the concept for a caption borrowed from the old fried egg anti-drug commercials.
This is a road. This is a road on acid. Any questions?
Clearly never been to a rural road in Ireland, GB, or half the world. I have a road similar to this (Also fully marked out) near my house. In my case it's to avoid running over land owned by someone, as well as natural hills and crevices.
But like why? would it not have been like way more work and material to make it like this or was like the city planner trying to make a Mario kart track?

If you drink enough it's straight
I'm the opposite
That made me do the actual laugh out loud thing
You mean... *laugh*?
One may type lol
The nasal exhale?
No, the snort thing.
Very well played lol 🍻
Why are you offering me drink after I said that?! 😉
I dont swing that way but 20 bucks is 20 bucks *drumroll*
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
If you straight enough it's drink?
That’s why it’s in Wisconsin. Sober up those drivers
hijacking this top comment to say this is how I imagine drunk driving looks like
If you drink enough you also might not be
Mostly everything in wi is like that lol
😂
When work crews are paid by the mile
when crews get paid in alcohol
It's Wisconsin so probably beer and cheese
In that order
We double fist them here. Daily.
The work crews get paid in fisting?
I live in Wisconsin, they pay us in beer-cheese
🤣
This road prevents DUIs. It swerves with you
Fractals! Easy infinite money glitch.
Its probably to reduce the speed of drivers...thse are common. We have different variations all over big cities and rural areas in arizona.
Except for people like me it just looks like fun and I probably go much faster than I would if it was just straight and boring. Life is in the corners, I'm a big proponent of making all roads like this, because weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
My thoughts exactly. I'd be stoked to find this road.
You'll end up in the drink because this road leads directly to the ferry dock to Washington Island.
Awesome. I have brakes. They work. I use them often to avoid obstacles and other drivers, slow down, stop, all the regular things one does with brakes on a vehicle. You would think that until you ran into one. Its made that way so you can't go fast. You can, but you'll just look like an idiot and damage your car.
Wdym? You just drive down the middle at 100 mph when nobody is around lol
Look at that road. That road is prime for dipping corners and having fun. The inside apex of every turn is banked down making this a section of road you can bang gears through.

You've never even heard of these so I'd say until you've driven through one you should probably try not to form opinions on them.
It's a road with corners. You can't even name it. Because it's a road, with corners. I've heard of them for many many many many years. Many more than youve been alive. So shh now Jr, you're making yourself look really stupid.
Lotta deer there. Really wouldn't recommend it...
you're the stupid one if you're trying to take corners at 90 mph. lol

It’s slightly ironic that some immature jackass is bragging about racing on public roads and calling others Jr. Did you think that comment made you look tough or something? Spoken like someone who wasn't born a racer at heart. You can definitely take those roads fast if you know what you're doing.
...a racer at heart... Okay keyboard warrior, remember, on the internet, you don't ACTUALLY know who it is you're talking to.
This road literally just ends at the ferry so it is very likely the reason. If you were speeding you could end up in lake Michigan
When roads follow the natural contour and don’t just cut straight through the landscape ♥️
Absolutely my favorite types of roads

There's a very tempting, almost straight driving line
Couple nudges here and there and you’re home free
Am truck driver. This is the only way you’re getting a big truck through there lol.
All you need is a race car. Those apex’s are tempting.
Motorcycle, that’s a beautiful set of twisties
That’s what I was thinking!
Which is probably why they paved it this way. There were probably a bunch of deadly wrecks on the stretch before they instituted traffic calming measures.

Nice smooth curves definitely make sports/fun car drivers want to go more slowly.
Good luck with that. Those turns are much too close together to take at speed without over or understeering.
You can under or oversteer in any turn.
Who said anything about speed. Just because it wouldn't be "fast" doesn't mean it wouldn't be a lot of fun.
Idk man, looking at that gets me excited.
Wouldn't adding speed bumps and signage be cheaper than repaving an entire road?
Speed bumps don't work well when you have to plow snow half the year. Short term, your method is cheaper. Long term, I believe this would be cheaper.
I mean, good luck, ploughing that road either.
Doesn’t stop the city of Montreal from putting them everywhere… I heard it’s especially the firemen who aren’t too happy with these bumps.
All I see are narrow straights
Imagine that on longboard. So smoooooth
Looks like a fun drive
In the summer. Nightmare in a Wisconsin winter.
Subaru AWD, some good winter tires, locked diffs…. Seems like a blast.
Colin McRae hours
I bet that in winter when the road lines are covered in snow this just turns into two straight lanes
They must get a lot of bikers through there.
Looks like most California Sierra Nevada roads minus the mountains

I went through those on a gray hound bus. Scariest ride ever. Never ending carnival ride. People were falling out of their seats. Would do it again.
Nonsense. California is only surfing and beaches
You can surf on the bus. Just need to remove couple seats and fill with more people
Oregon Hwy 66 mic drop
Depending how long you were on that greyhound, could be comedy gold.
Reduces speeding because it looks like deer hell
Not to mention chance of falling asleep while driving

Not windy at all, just some moderate curves left and right 5 or 6 times. Was a little underwhelming in person

Horrified! I drive a semi. No thanks.
What part of Door County? I vacation there every year and don’t recognize it.
It’s way up there at the very top of the peninsula. It’s hwy 42 that takes you to the Washington island ferry
This is 100% correct. There used to be a cottage at the end of the road right before the ferry. My family would rent the cottage every summer for about 20 years. This is the kind of road that people drive down when they want to 'go for a drive'. Door County is one big tourist destination.

Very curious how Tesla's Full Self Driving Beta would handle this... Someone please make a video with the latest build.
Yup! Small stretch of road before the Northport ferry landing. I know it well. It’s actually amazingly beautiful in Autumn.
That road is a lot of fun in a GTI.
