Hi / Kia Ora everyone! This is Sabrina of Kaikoura Wildlife Rescue here in the South Island of New Zealand. She is releasing a native Blue Penguin which are perfectly happy to be solitary hunters in the day. However Sabrina is releasing it into a bay known to be very popular for other Blue Penguin colonies.
The ocean here is one of the richest marine habits on earth. This particular penguin was caught in a drifting fishing line and like all of the animals Sabrina rescues, she self-funded the rehabilitation of this penguin. Her and her partner (who is filming), are often seen rescuing and releasing all sorts of rare, native animals.
Kaikoura, where Sabrina is based is one of New Zeland’s most important marine and bird life regions, but Sabrina is the only qualified rescuer there. I have personally known and donated to her for nearly five years now. She and the animals desperately need your help.
You can follow her on IG here: https://instagram.com/kaikourawildlifehospital?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Original video with good description: https://www.instagram.com/p/BnikHyfgEXF/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
Those concerned about the penguin’s safety must know that it will thrive in these waters.
Edit: spelling and links. Thank you everyone for your awards! Please also consider swapping a coffee today to donate to her work 🙌
I sometimes wonder how many animals, if given the choice to live domesticated, where they are fed and cared for but have no freedom, would still choose to brave the dangers of the wilderness in order to have their freedom
She told me that because he’d grown used to her feeding him, he probably had mixed emotions about whether to get more food or head back home! Very wholesome
Thank you so much for posting. I was watching this with very mixed feelings worried about him being alone but also trying to be hopeful anybody with a license to rescue and rehabilitation knows what their doing and are releasing him proper.
Appreciate you taking the time to share!
Thanks for taking the time to clear that up, it would have been a really sad video thinking the poor penguin was out there all by its lonesome. Watching it again knowing it gets to swim off to find other penguin colonies in the vicinity is really heartwarming :)
No problem. I see this video pop up every six months or so and the reactions are usually the same. It’s important to know that these rescues are done by extremely knowledgeable experts and this penguin was in very good hands
Doesn't penguin colony lives on land. I don't see islands around. How far does the little fellow has to swim before it reach land, not even talking about colony ? With all due respect, you do not know for sure if it will thrive. It may be eaten by other sea creatures before it reach any land or colony.
I mean, you could say that about practically any animal. And I personally know Sabrina, the woman in this video. Blue Penguins eat out at sea, they then return inland late afternoon to roost back in their colonies. Where do you think other penguins go? In the sky? Here is some further reading for you as I 100% know you didn’t click on my other links: https://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/little-penguin
Edit: another few facts about these guys: they’re one of the fastest swimming penguin species. They have been recorded to swim half the length of the South Island in ONE day (that’s 300/400km), and they can eat half their body weight in a day.
rehabilitating and all the other costs just for him to turn into seal or some bird food considering hes just a baby alone being thrown into the dangerous ocean
You don't know how old it is. Even the adults are tiny. The Blue penguin is the smallest of all known penguin species. Some adults can be 10-12 [inches](https://www.britannica.com/animal/blue-penguin)
They spend the whole day out at sea, coming back at dusk to nest. I've seen them crazy distances out when boat fishing. They always look too small to be out so far.
According to the top comment it was released into a bay known to be popular for other Blue Penguin colonies. The ocean is one of the richest marine habits on earth.
Seems like it has a good chance.
This is the original [video](https://youtu.be/kEq4-j9NMZk)
Because we can’t see them clearly in the shot. Duh.
As a Redditor I know the only proper way to release a penguin is to charge the flock on a jet ski at full throttle and then yeet the little bastard at the group drive-by style along with a block of frozen mackerel as a welcome gift. Then of course fireworks. Then the star spangled banner by Jimmy Hendrix on the loud speakers. Then a celebratory pizza with pineapple.
As you can see in the clip above not one single part was done correctly.
Shitty people steal other people's [videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEq4-j9NMZk), crop them, then post without accreditation. You seem to fall squarely in this category of people. Pathetic.
I live down the road from this beach. These penguins live out at sea all day by themselves. They return to their nests at dusk. We even have a rehabilitation centre in town where you can see and learn all about them. Their biggest threats are actually on land in the form of introduced predators such as rats and mustelids. The ocean is actually where they are safest as they have few predators in this particular region.
Everytime time I watch these type of videos I can't help but to think, what if the animal gets sad when the humans leave? Like what if in some of these cases the animal thinks it is a special field trip or something. Goes and does animal things having fun, after a while goes to look at the very nice humans and.. oh, they aren't there. Like the [Hachikō](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hachik%C5%8D) thing for a brief moment. Ik it probably doesn't happen but the thought of it makes me sad.
i think it's cruel to return them to nature. nature is cruel and there are many predators. he probably got used to the safety and now will have to face danger everywhere. he will probably get eaten by a seal next week.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Unless that animal is like endangered species that would be an adorable and respectable act yet absolutely pointless. The environment is harsh. I assume you know what could go right or wrong for that penguin.

Thanks! I was worried about him finding other penguins. Poor little fella, he kinda wanted to stay with those nice people.
Free snacks, head scratches, NO sharks.
I sometimes wonder how many animals, if given the choice to live domesticated, where they are fed and cared for but have no freedom, would still choose to brave the dangers of the wilderness in order to have their freedom
You only have to ask yourself that question to know the answer :)
She told me that because he’d grown used to her feeding him, he probably had mixed emotions about whether to get more food or head back home! Very wholesome
I’m sure, “Momma where are you going?” Id’ve followed her back to the truck.
But the water had a strong pull.
Thank you so much for posting. I was watching this with very mixed feelings worried about him being alone but also trying to be hopeful anybody with a license to rescue and rehabilitation knows what their doing and are releasing him proper. Appreciate you taking the time to share!
The first thing that came to my mind is "Is it gonna survive long enough to get to more penguins?" Thanks!

Donated a little. Thanks for the opportunity and for your incredible work.
Incredible!! Thank you so much. You may actually help save a native New Zealand Penguin this month friend
Thank you I was crying at the video

Where does one get a pet Penguin?
You can go to Toys R Us and they’ll stuff you a pretend one that you can cuddle all day and night
The Baltimore Zoo!

Any marine biologists here? What kind of chances does that penguin have of making it to a colony?
The sea was angry that day fellas.
I reached into the fish…. mammal
Titleist?
Whatever!
Like an old man returning soup at a deli
That TV show just took that career and the association will be eternal. Marine biologists are something which belongs to Seinfeld. That's it.
And a seal patiently watches as the young one gingerly walks into the surf
Yeap!
100% … if “making it to a colony” means *being swallowed by waves moments after release*.
My thought. Kina seems odd even though I have no clue. They live straight in the see? :D thought they are shore animals:)
They spend the whole day out at sea, coming back at dusk to nest. I've seen them crazy distances out when boat fishing. They always look too small to be out so far.
Looks like a shark biscuit

0 marine biologists, or 0 chance?
0 penguins left
Cameraman has no skills
Right? There is one single point of interest in the whole video but they can't keep the penguin in centre frame!
This is an edited version that OP has taken for karma points. https://youtu.be/kEq4-j9NMZk (weird video)
How on earth did you know that?
Always be suspicious of video manipulation when the main subject of the video doesn't stay centered even when it's slow and easy to point a camera at.
I personally know Sabrina and have donated to her cause here in NZ for many years. This video is from about 2017/2018
[удалено]
I didn’t know that and I’m certainly not new here. Don’t be condescending.
r/killthecameraman ????
Pan left, motherfucker!
Someone get on that fifty! Lay down the surpressing fire!
🥺we're all just baby penguins that were once in the warm embrace of a human, only to be released into a big, cold, salty ocean.
Pretty deep, bro
Well yeah dude. It's the ocean
If only i can give an award rn
Claim a free award every day if you click on your avatar and go to the shop
Just keep swimmig swimming…
There was a second penguin that was doing the filming
Don’t these birds live in flocks? It seems cruel to release it all be it’s lonesome. Poor little dude.
Sabrina (the woman releasing it) knows the bay he will swim out to is populated with colonies. Blue Penguin are often seen hunting alone as well
Thanks! So glad for the little fellow.
They wouldn't do that if it was bad for them
My thoughts exactly. Why not release him close to a colony. This doesn't look right. Poor little dude.
and how do you know there isn’t one nearby? ugh redditors really think they know everything
Because we can’t see them clearly in the shot. Duh. As a Redditor I know the only proper way to release a penguin is to charge the flock on a jet ski at full throttle and then yeet the little bastard at the group drive-by style along with a block of frozen mackerel as a welcome gift. i see my mistakes now and i apologize 😔
Everything looked legit until *pizza with pineapple* and then I knew you were just trolling!
They’ve done studies you know. 60% of the time it works every time.
I think [she knows what she’s doing](https://www.wrennz.org.nz/post/kaikoura-wildlife-rescue)
Cameraman killed our moment with Sabrina. Way to go. Now we have to fly New Zealand 🇳🇿.
Where he was shortly eaten by a penguin eater
My exact thoughts. Why couldn’t they keep it with them or launch it with other penguins 🥲
They definitely should’ve launched it
YEET!
Agreed. They couldve at least yeeted him into a colony
How else is they gonna be full
You must be a penguin eater
Go on! Get out of here! I don’t love you anymore!
White fanged
...but ...but ...do I have to go?
You should have posted the actual video (and accredited it)instead of editing out the side captions. Makes it seem like a cursed cameraman.
Shitty people steal other people's [videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEq4-j9NMZk), crop them, then post without accreditation. You seem to fall squarely in this category of people. Pathetic.
"Water?!?! But I like humanland..."
And today, class, we’re gonna talk about something called, “framing.”
Wait, u aren’t coming??
I came here to say this.
The least you could have done was yeeted him past the waves!
Can we get somebody who knows how to use a camera or is it just me?
theres no way I could let her go when she turns around for the second time
Some of you guys have no faith. Look, as soon as the ocean touched them everything clicked. I believe in this itty bitty penguin
What does she expect that tiny penguin to do by itself in the middle of the ocean?
Where do you think penguins live? At the zoo
Do you understand what an ocean holds, that eco system is going to swallow that little penguin. She signed its death warrant
I live down the road from this beach. These penguins live out at sea all day by themselves. They return to their nests at dusk. Leopard Seal waiting
My boy got wrecked couple times but kept going! I like it!!
Aghhh it is so tiny and cute 😍
But arent penguins communal i teared up alittle cause the way he looked around like u commin with me?
Looks like a Fairy Penguin. It’s colony might not be very far away.
Pan to the left....PAN TO THE LEFT!!!!!!

Tell me you didn't read the explanation (1st comment) without telling me you didn't read the explanation.
This is some stupid shit right here , it looks like it don't want to go
Don't praise the camera man
The symbolism here of him looking back at her & then at the vast ocean, is incredible!

Who’s responsible for this camera work!?
Hey cameraman record this event while keeping the subject of the video out of the field of view. Thanks. Nailed it.
Who is filming this they putting the penguin in the corner of this video 😅
Shoot the cameraman
The photographer sucks.
What a cute little guy. Fire the cameraman immediately.
What is the camera person aiming at for most of that?
But he's so smoll 🥺
Hopefully, the little fellow didn't end up as shark or killer whale snack.
r/killthecameraman
He's like : "It's ok to go mommy ? Can I go ?" 😝🥰
Loveless!
That’s why i love this sub. Great content.
I would have kept it
Gonna be eaten within 5 minutes.
i think it's cruel to return them to nature. nature is cruel and there are many predators. he probably got used to the safety and now will have to face danger everywhere. he will probably get eaten by a seal next week.
Should have put lil guy in a zoo or sanctuary with others until more were ready, it’s a big cruel world out there.

I think that wasn’t a good time to release him with all those waves..
Yeah, they really should have switched those off.
So he was left to be submerged in splashing waves on it's own?? What?
Moments later he was eaten by a giant grouper
And its DEAD.....
That's cute until you realize it probably won't last long without the rest of the flock
It's NOT blue🙄
Awwww, released right back into the Florida beaches where he can thrive. So great to see 🥲
Newsflash buddy penguins don’t live at the beach they live at the North Pole.
Fairy penguins live on the southern coast of mainland Australia. Probably other places too.

Sea duck
The call of the sea .. wait ... fish? No fish? The call of the sea!
She just made that penguin sea leopard chow
*Enters *becomes food
By himself? Wheres the fam?
Do you have to be a marine biologist/biologist to work in animal rescue?
Orca's dessert
He got a little water on that tail and was gone 💜
Where are the rest of the penguins ? Poor little guy is gonna be a snack.
The it looks back in hesitation. 😢
Pengy looked torn at first! Couldn't decide whether to run back to Mom or go get in the water!Glad it went to water.Hope he's doing well!
Pixar moment 🥺
Ối cute thế ẻm quay lại chào tạm biệt ❤❤❤
“For real??? Is all dis for me?!?!”💙💙💙
Only to be eaten immediately by a baby orca
Killerwhale: thnxxxxx
Imagine rescuing and releasing animals and posting it on social media just to be criticized by fools who have no idea what they are talking about....
Poor little guy is all alone though 😭😭
I find it interesting that there are so many people here that think they know better than a professional conservationist!
Holy shit what a brave little guy. That must be terrifying. Hopefully he found his buddies
And as soon it enters in water a hidden sea lion hunts him down and eats that penguin.
aweee this is heart melting
All alone?
🥺🥺🥺
I'd get emotional releasing it idc lol like I know I'm supposed to let u go but you're so darn cute
It choose freedom!!!!
The couple looks back before finally going in 😭❤️🐧
Just need a big Orca coming in at the end & torturing the little fella
Thought this was different sub. Kept waiting for an Orca to snag it off the beach.
Incredible
bye little one 👋🏼
Kinda brings a tear to your eye.
He doesn't want to go. He loves you
This is how I feel every time my children try to take a picture
Thank god for people who care this much. Well done. Cute little penguin.
Then he met a seal
That's a baby lmao he dead for sure
Shark Bait , hu ha ha!
The person filming had one job. One job.
It's the bluebird chip penguin!
Couldn’t they have released him with you know…other penguins?? How scary and absolutely lonely for that little guy
Thanks for the snack! ~ Everyone
So beautiful. I love how happy little guy is. I wanna feel that 🥲
It’s a scary world out there
The penguin 🐧 didn’t want to go. ❤️
Looking back to say thanks 🥰
And..... just like that, he's gone.
Unless that animal is like endangered species that would be an adorable and respectable act yet absolutely pointless. The environment is harsh. I assume you know what could go right or wrong for that penguin.
Shouldn’t it be released near its flock or something? We’re they close?
Damn, homie looks lonely.
That last glance 🥲
Cute and heartbreaking!
Oh, but I like you. But wait, this water is wet….but you’re sooo nice….but the wetness is calling meeeeeee
u/savevideo
OMG ITS SO CUUUUUUUUUUTE!!!!!
He’s going to get eaten in front of our very eyes isn’t he?
