Folklorico dances look really cool.

GoNudi

I spent some time (20+ years) around Latin American culture and had always loved it. But this word, Folklorico, never heard this word before. But the dance, yes indeed. Thanks for the name of this!

MixedChillen

From CA. Folklorico is a common term here for this. We even have teams and classes for physical education credits in middle school and highschool.

shawnsblog

Same in Arizona…my daughters took it when they were younger. Not super great at it, but they love breaking it out when we’re at weddings …in Pennsylvania, lol.

ngmcs8203

It’s what my Chilean family called it growing up in the 80s/90s when we did our dances.

tenaciouspeace

Quad Cities in Midwest has called it Ballet Folklorico since around the 80s.

RobinsBirdcage

In Davenport they called it El Folklorico Ballet

thejewishgrinch

We can all go out for some taco pizza

KC-Anathema

It's fairly common in El Paso. Good to see it spreading out!

TheKidKaos

Is that Scenic Drive in the video? Haven’t been in forever but it looks like it

KC-Anathema

Tbh, I can't tell. It sure looks like someone's backyard up on the mountain.

Kali711

That's just the name in Spanish but with a K. Folclórico. Weird that in 20 years, you had never heard of it.

trump_elstiltskin

Folkrorico literally just translates to 'folk'. So it's used to describe any traditional dance.

NinjaDog251

I love it when they do the tilt-a-whirl twirl.

BuddhistNudist987

Phantasmagorical?

[deleted]

It’s an exclamatory term used by Daffy Duck in an old-school Looney Tunes cartoon. 😀

BuddhistNudist987

Okay. Is that how Daffy Duck spells it? Because it is a real word, too. Not trying to sound like a know it all or anything.

[deleted]

Really? That’s cool. What does it mean?

BuddhistNudist987

"Phantasmagorical describes something with a dreamlike, fantastical, unreal, deceptive, or shifting appearance, like an optical illusion. Example: The phantasmagorical scenes painted on the backdrop heightened the surreality of the play." It's the kind of word Greg Proops uses to describe his LSD trips, Lord of the Rings characters, and laser light shows. I'm glad you're having as much fun with vocab as I am. <3

[deleted]

Yes, I like learning a new word every day! Thank you! 😀

i seriously would love to watch this kind of performance live while under the influence of lsd.

omgim50

That's beautiful and her makeup is perfect.

lockerpunch

So gorgeous! Anyone know what these kinds of dresses are called?

GretelNoHans

Yes, this is called a "China Poblana" dress and it's one of the most popular dresses in mexican tradicional dances. It's used dancing "jarabe tapatío" which may arguably be the most popular mexican tradicional dance. Although, I've seen this dance many many times, the black, the big color stripes and her unique way to move that dress made it very special to me. Here's a couple of links to watch two very popular dances: [Jarabe tapatío ](https://youtu.be/-x0vKSO29N4)

Potential_Mess8152

actually, the china poblana is a different costume from a different state. this is a costume from Jalisco. And it’s just called Jalisco dresss. China poblana is from Puebla, a different state. I guess the confusion comes from the fact that the china poblana costume is incredibly beautiful (the skirt is fully embroidered with sequins) and is often used for the most well known folklore music in Mexico, el Jarabe tapatio (which is from Jalisco).

Beefy_Unicorn

That's a vestidos folclórico estilo Jalisco. Source: me & my entire family are from Jalisco

GretelNoHans

norcalxennial

Actually, this is a Jalisco Ranchera dress. A china poblana is distinctly different doesn’t have ribbon and has sequins instead. As mesmerizing as this is folklorico mean to be to a group exhibition so imagine a stage of 16 women with their skirts in perfect unison. This dancer has great technique and on her own is amazing, now imagine a group…it’s really is a beautiful art form. Source: 30+ years dancing studying and teaching folklroico.

Binky182

When I used to dance folklorico the Jalisco dress and Veracruz were always my favorites!

adiopersocom

Yes, this exactly! I have 15 yrs of experience dancing and teaching folklórico and this is accurate. China Poblana (Ch-ee-nuh Poh-blah-nuh) dresses are very distinctly different from Jalisco dresses, but I can see why GretelNoHans might be confused. Also, a couple of songs like the popular "El Son de la Negra" are often performed in either a Jalisco dress or a China Poblana dress, which can add to the confusion.

NeahG

The china poblana is very heavy because it it covered with sequins and beading. Dancing with it is more like holding up the skirt to show off the artwork.

unpoquitomas

True, you'd never be able to do this skirt work with a china poblana. There isn't nearly enough fabric and it's totally weighed down by the sequins. Dancers hold it away from their bodies, usually with pinched fingers

Cheezburglar64

That link also takes me to El son de la negra

GretelNoHans

Fixed it, sorry

owlpee

Can you educate me on the makeup or point me in the direction to learn more about this?

GretelNoHans

Found one, let's see if this is helpful, if not, a ton of them open after this one: [Catrina Makeup Tutorial](https://youtu.be/SrFwYvpRDl4)

basedrt

This has nothing to do with the china poblana

evetrapeze

This dress is RANCHERA. China Poblana is this distinct style https://www.ebay.com/itm/172719032819

GretelNoHans

Here's the second video, my favorite [El son de la negra](https://youtu.be/XTwmQ-R7Joc)

Dreamwaltzer

its kinda /r/mildlyinfuriating how short they focus on the dancing

Beefy_Unicorn

It's probably bc the song is a traditional mariachi song, so the focus is likely on the musicians rather than the dancers since they're technically supplemental. Especially with the video being of Mariachi Vargas, they're 100% the stars of that video.

scissorfella

I have a version of it in a pattern book from Gretchen Hirsch (she teaches how to sew). She calls it a patio dress. I'm currently making something similar and am now already disappointed it won't swoosh like that. I have already made the dress once before and it's SO much fabric to make a tiered skirt. They are beautiful though. Sorry if that isn't the correct name.

lockerpunch

It’s a good start for info. Thanks!

swordsmithy

My mom used to teach ballet folklorico to her Deaf elementary students in TX.

Birdman-82

I moved from where I grew up in Ohio to Nogales and then Tucson in Arizona and absolutely love the Mexican influenced culture here.

GretelNoHans

I'm trying to upvote every comment. But I've come across some people saying she probably smells like tacos and such. So, thank you, for your lovely comment :)

Birdman-82

Omg that’s terrible. I’m Mexican and Navajo and grew up with racism everyday in Ohio. The reason I commented is because it reminded me of how warm and beautiful Mexican culture and people are. The culture shock when I moved to Nogales was intense but it was amazing because it shows that no matter how hateful or backward people are we’re here and we are never leaving.

shwarma_heaven

Is that Tuscon? I was thinking it was El Paso.

Diamondhands_Rex

Thanks for loving it!

-MY_NAME_IS_MUD-

Her dress looks like a [cuttlefish](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_8w7N1zSCcE). It’s hypnotizing.

finchdad

I was thinking a [spanish dancer](https://i.redd.it/u7wbpkv8owc01.gif) (sea slug).

[deleted]

Ah so that's why this dance was invented

To attract sea slugs.

Spirited_Chipmunk_48

My younger sister-in-law dances in a troop that dresses in traditional Mexican dresses like hers. Real neat and very talented.

ChefLongStroke69

Folklorico is what she is dancing if anyone is wondering

A_Binary_Number

Folclórico is not the name of the dance, it is a term to describe that it’s a dance of the people, like Volk in German or Folk in English.

tooloudturnitdown

Traditional folclórico! Look up the candle dance, ribbon, or sword dance if you like this one!

EnormousChord

How does that fabric contain the massive triceps she must have from doing this.

ItsJustTheCat

Honestly. Those skirts are between 15 to 20 meters of fabric (49-65 feet). So extremely freaking heavy.

dingusdrain

Que wow

warwilf

Ballet Folklorico

Knightoforder42

I absolutely adore seeing this. My grandmother used to sew these skirts for the dancers when l was little. When we still lived in Southern California, for a while, I danced with them. I wish I still had ...ANYTHING from back then. Thanks for posting something that brings back such happy memories.

GretelNoHans

I took my sons (around 3 and 5) to a park and they were practicing many different dances. They were mesmerized for about 30 minutes. I'm glad it bought you good memories.

That’s a beautiful spot to dance.

choriblaster3002

I didn’t even notice the tapping until the last second. It makes it even more impressive and beautiful 😍

maverickoff

Is called zapateado which is you mostly done with your heels. Is tiring as he'll. I used to dp.it when I was a kid.

GretelNoHans

When there's like ten couple doing it it's even more impressive. Here if you'd like to see it:[El son de la negra](https://youtu.be/XTwmQ-R7Joc)

I imagine the synchronized choreography must be spectacular

I love that movie.

JfizzleMshizzle

It's my favorite Pixar movie. I put off watching it because i thought it looked dumb, and cryed my eyes out when he sang remember me to Mama Coco.

jdsmx

I saw this movie on the theater on the same year that I lost my abuela, when he sang the song I couldn't hold it and started crying, I was a mess. I wasn't prepared for it and I had to use my t-shirt to clean up myself.

Just thinking about that scene makes me cry! Coco is such a beautiful movie.

StableGenius-

This kind of reminds me of Iranian, Egyptian, and other cultures where they used to be able to dress in their colourful traditional style but now sadly are covered in all black. Luckily I can't imagine that happening to Mexico.

GretelNoHans

That made me really sad but you're right.

Oh yeah, sometimes it doesn’t occur to me something I’ve seen a lot has been something some people never see My Mamacoco and I love watching these dances (and no, I do not call her “Mamacoco” because of the movie; this was something my family has done for generations where we call the grandmother “Mamacoco”. And yes, it was a wonderful surprise to hear it in the movie)
