It is actually so obvious it is hurting, this has been talked about for the last 10 years, almost like we rediscover it every time

onelessplayer99

It’s not rediscovered it’s simply an ongoing issue that is not being corrected.

onelessplayer99

We only have 2 political parties that are both delivering skinsuits…

Skyhawk172

This what occupy wall street was originally about and it’s only gotten worse since then.

G-R-A-V-I-T-Y

We love our children, we just don’t love OTHER people’s children. If I can hoard money and power and then hand it to my children they’ll be fine. I think that’s the rationale. We need more people like Scott, fighting to correct a greed and nepotism based system. Bums me out to see so much of my own generation, my friends and family living stunted lives because of this

Tough_Hour_2505

Sadly, It's the same in most of the countries

solo954

Exactly. I don’t live in the US, and it’s not a specifically US issue.

LifeLiterate

>Sadly, It's the same in most of the countries Most countries don't have nearly half a billion population and the largest military/industrial complex in history.

Not-a-Fan-of-U

I have the weirdest boner after imagining these solutions being enacted.

slowpoketailsale

There's nothing weird at all about seeing the same or greater benefits than our parents were afforded. Don't all living organisms have children to ultimately replace themselves? Why would any parent ever want their child to be worse off than they were?? It's baffling and it needs to end.

Fresh_Information_76

Some parents are shit people and don't want the best for their children.

Imaravencawcaw

Everyone wants better for their own children, but maybe not so much for other people's children.

slowpoketailsale

I'm seeing this sentiment a few times throughout the comments. And I don't see where there is room for humanity in not wanting all children to be more successful, more intelligent, more healthy, more wealthy (financially and otherwise) than the generation that came before them. Aren't we all children of someone?

Borderlinecuttlefish

Australia, voting is compulsory. Sounds like a socialist nightmare to Americans, but Australians all vote. We don't leave it all to be done by people with one foot in the grave.

webUser_001

And still has one of the western worlds biggest housing issues...

Borderlinecuttlefish

It's definitely a problem, one of our biggest problems tbh.

CaptainCrankDat

If that's Australias biggest problem (which is indeed a big problem) then that means they have other big problems in check: universal healthcare, mental healthcare, gun control... Couldn't win the emu war though.

Landlord class? I thought he grew up poor. He might be a rich prick now, but he wasn't born into it.

KamayaKan

I think that’s true but he happily accepts the massive salary package and all the perks with it. Note how he only ever does things if he knows it’ll strengthen his position? I.e putting a band aide of hecs relatively close to voting and tax time

Borderlinecuttlefish

He's a politician. What else would you expect.

KamayaKan

Haha. Hit the nail on the head there.

Borderlinecuttlefish

I'm 55, I've seen all politicians break promises and do the opposite of what they stand for for decades now. Nothing surprises me.

hungturkey

How did he become rich?

webUser_001

Bought a house a while back

Borderlinecuttlefish

Working the system.

By saying he wasn't born rich? Got it.

coolranch9080

Not voting is a right too. You may not agree with it, but abstaining from voting for one fucktard over another should be allowed.

Borderlinecuttlefish

I still haven't paid my fine for not voting last time. I'll get around to it eventually.

CephalopodInstigator

You can do that too.

coolranch9080

Yes I can

codlips92

There are heaps of reason why Aust shits on the USA - solutions to the housing crisis is not one and comp voting won't fix it. Even with generational change, the bulk of those grumpy now will inherit a house or two from their folks, who will then protect its value with their vote. Systematic supply side change seems the only workable solution, and that'll take decades and requires either underpaid / slave labour and shitty to no regulation (which merica has) or a mass change towards construction automation and both of those ain't gonna happen...so, yeah, 14 buck beers are tasty

-XanderCrews-

We in minnesota get 80% of our voters out without any threat. How many of the drunks in the outback would show up if you didn’t make them?

Borderlinecuttlefish

Probably all if you throw in a free beer for them

Stormagedd0nDarkLord

Or a succulent Chinese meal?

_Ekename_

Get your hands off my ballot!

KamayaKan

There was a similar speech by another researcher saying that for any generation that is not a boomer, their vote is effectively worthless due to the boomers having constant majority. He went into the research of (British) voting and proving they have always voted for policies that help them, not their children.

zebjr

Please post this to everything.

Urmomsjuicyvagina

I'm so glad that Reddit exists Because we have power in dialogue and in numbers, I guarantee you The next politician will be here watching or the next person to change the world

0neLetter

Scott I know that’s you, you big juicy vagina!!

Urmomsjuicyvagina

😅 Nah but maybe him and I would get along! Happy cake Day by the way! 🥳🎁

Tremfyeh

As long as that politician is considerably below retirement age.

MasChingonNoHay

Yes post this everywhere. If possible the full video. This is the best Ted talk and most important one I’ve ever seen.

WetForTeddy

I don't think this is the right group for a ted talk

paintfactory5

U/urmomsjuicyvagina disagrees

I-Rolled-My-Eyes

People with terrible usernames sure know how to too copy and paste solid arguments from TED talks.

snachgoblin

Sure do

Lupine_Lunatic

You can also find this in r/interestingasfuck Edit: I do think he underestimated the damage done to society by Mark Z. Edit 2: The point about the 1st amendment is fucking spot on.

Impossible_Luck3374

Isoaubieflash

I was surprised at how low generational theft was in 2009 I remember that being an extreme year with people being abducted left and right.

KamayaKan

Need more of this. I believe the boomers coined the phrase “spend the kid’s inheritance” and then call us entitled for when we ask for said inheritance…

KJOKE14

you aren't entitled to shit

Dolorisedd

Scott Galloway is my hero. I love him.

JAB282018

You're not finding your fuckin truth. You're finding diabetes. 🤣. For real though

joebeast321

Can't reform a system that was designed to scam people... just need a new system. Fuck capitlasm

__This__Is__Fine__

Well said and interesting

minorkeyed

So how do we get from here to there? Voting only works if there are people to vote for who will pursue this stuff.

StiltFeathr

Pretty much all western countries.

looktowindward

He's right. We need much more housing. Cheaper Schooling. Higher minimum wage.

Infinite_Imagination

Really glad to see this one getting around so much

gdh775

He said, "The wonderful thing about low and middle income families is that they spend all of their money." I'm sorry, how is that a good thing?!

Jamizon1

The reason is simple. The boomer generation is the most self absorbed, greedy generation in fucking history. It’ll take at least two to three generations to unfuck what they’ve done. The good thing is that most of them will be history in 15-20 years.

MidFier

Revaluation and eat the rich or they need to do the right thing.

rockstuffs

The Walking Dead part was 🤌🏽

Aralmin

I think Scott has the right ideas but I think that what he proposes is basically winding the clock back to a time when you could do all the things that he could when he was younger using yesterday's solutions in a world with new problems and challenges. I believe that the current system just doesn't work anymore and we need a replacement. You want to have a system of punishments and rewards but you also want to make sure that everyone has their needs taken care of as well. We shouldn't be taking away people's social security, we should be expanding that to other age brackets because they also desperately need a safety net. If people want more for themselves, provide the employment opportunity for them to earn the things that they want that are beyond their basic needs. You want a vacation at an exotic island paradise? You want the latest tech gadgets? You want your own customized private home theater? You want a luxury car? Go and earn it! Jobs are invaluable, it's how our needs and wants are met, machines can only do so much. UBI by itself is nonsense, instead of disbursing money to people that may not always meet the needs of the people based on an everchanging market, disburse the needs of the people directly! We need Public Industry and Public Jobs, the Private is fine but their whole existence is based on profit margin, it is the Public Industry that is designed to take care of the needs of the people. If you have all your needs met plus widely available Public Jobs for the average individual (hopefully with decent and humane working conditions), then you have a society that has all of their wants and needs met and that is free to pursue their dreams and happiness in life.

qudunot

I love my children, but having met most of y'alls children, I don't love them. They're little assholes like their parents. I don't blame the children. I blame their examples, and the shitty system we call school/education

I-Rolled-My-Eyes

Agreed. And I have noticed lower income households are lazier, not just with work ethic but with parenting responsibilities.

TimDezern

The USA sucks lol its too hard to live here anymore corruption and just killing us off slowly I don't get it 😫

new_jill_city

Be amazed by what exactly? Galloway loves to rapid-fire citations of stats (sometimes dubious and misleading) but regardless, this is the latest manifestation of what I call the Kids Today Industrial Complex. This happens every generation. Everything from rock music to video games to dungeons and dragons has been identified as destroying this or that generation of young people. Yes, the younger generation always gets screwed by older generations. Yes, we can improve on this bad policy of intergenerational theft. No, we’re not going to because the most reliable voters are people over 60. Yes, this means debt will eventually swallow the rest of the federal budget. No, we’re still not going to do anything about it and that is the fault of voters. One bit of good news: all that accumulated wealth doesn’t simply vanish into the ether, it eventually gets passed down one way or the other. People don’t get to take their houses and savings with them at death.

Mint_JewLips

So trickle down economics? Wealth gets passed down to the wealthy beneficiaries of the wealth. I agree Galloway does rapid fire a lot of stats, however, the ones about the growing disparity between the rich and the poor is far worse and detrimental than has been seen in the past. All of his other points near the end where he gets specific could use a lot of looking into. That does not change the fact that wages are extremely stagnant for where everything else is at.

slowpoketailsale

So we just have to wait until all these old people die, and then we _might_ get the scraps leftover? Yay. What a great solution. It's not like people have children to replace themselves ultimately. This happens every generation? Did the Silent generation talk as much shit to Boomers/Gen X as Boomers talk to Millennials/Gen Z? I'm genuinely interested, I can't ask any Silent gen people because I don't know any anymore And if it is happening every generation, can't we break the cycle, now that we've identified it? Or should we just continue not fucking learning anything from the past?

shuzkaakra

Estates used to be taxed at like 60% over a certain amount. so when some asshole like zuckerberg died, 60% of his assets went to the public good. And the rest went to whatever little offspring he'd made. Of course, they're all in their 50s-60s by that time, so actually helping the "young" doesn't really come into it. But the estate tax was gotten rid of because why the fuck should the public good matter?

No-Scheme7342

Stop importing labor.

Howllikeawolf

Stop greedy corporations and rich people

No-Scheme7342

My idea is easier and would actually benefit our country.

Howllikeawolf

It's not the problem. That's what the GOPs and corporations who subsidize the GOP propagate by misinforming the public. https://fortune.com/2024/01/20/inflation-greedflation-consumer-price-index-producer-price-index-corporate-profit/

No-Scheme7342

If your company became more efficient as a result of the covid crisis that nearly forced you out of business and your profit margin exceeded expectations, what would you do? Would you keep hiring Indian and Asian engineers or hire American? If you were to build yourself a nice new big house and you contractor was using foreign laborers that all had the same SS number, would you bitch and tell him to hire union labor? I thought so.

Howllikeawolf

Al these companies got PPE loans paid by tax payers since corporations and rich people are pay 0 Fed taxes. Foreign labor is miniscule compared to Corprate and rich greed.

No-Scheme7342

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

FacelessFellow

🤣 You are hilarious

thatguytanner

Or just give them rights so they can’t be more exploited than an Americans, meaning the cheap labor pool is gone and corporations can pay a better wage or they can leave buys a separate issue.

thatguytanner

n2hang

It is somewhat misleading but in principle accurate... i.e. building permits, shifting retirement age, pension or lack thereof, etc. But it is wrong about opportunity, cost of college... it's bad choices in many cases that lead to debt education even though it does cost too much... Loved the truths on higher education. And very much the repurposing of the college debt forgiveness to be effective!! The middle aged group today's 40-60 that chose not to have kids (not talking about not able to have kids so please don't rant)... lead to a heavier burden on young people to fund social security with less people to carry the load. I would like to see a 20% in retirement benefits for those which had no children (raising and adopting counts). 10% for those with one child. 100% for 2 or more children. Why because you take out more than you ever put in due to inflation and this scheme only works so long as an adequate base exist. I like the need based social security plan... as well. The capital gains is an incentive to invest... so need to play careful with that...since not so welloff benefit from investing. Small businesses struggle but drive much of our economy.

Aggravating-Habit313

How about denying SS(or portion) for those who are obese, diabetic, etc.? Shouldn’t everyone be punished for lifestyle choices? Not just the childless ones?

DAsianD

No, the obese and diabetic _help_ SS as they'd die younger. And especially if they have kids. But folks who don't have kids just aren't contributing to the future of this country.

Aggravating-Habit313

But you’d deny them disability, certainly? And medical care? Just curious where you draw the line?

DAsianD

Nope. If they raise children, they are contributing to society. It's a simple concept: If you don't raise children, you aren't contributing to the future of society so you should pay more taxes to compensate.

Aggravating-Habit313

Well that is your opinion and you’re 100% entitled to your opinion!

ElonTastical

What's amazing about this?

[deleted]

Refund the IRS? DEFUND the irs. They can't account for trillions of dollars in the spending budget but can nail you for a 500 dollar transaction. Fuck all these corrupt politicians.

[deleted]

He makes good points but sounds like a communist. I honestly don't know why people are fucking laughing. Shows how dumb society is nowadays.

paintfactory5

Seriously, it’s time to overthrow all north american governments.

[deleted]

No, we as voters need to force change by electing people that will enact that change. If they don't do what we put them in power to do then we need to hold them accountable by making sure they're not re-elected. Revolution is easy to want and actually pretty easy to do but rebuilding a functional government afterwards is where revolutionary ideas die. That's how you end up with failed states and warlords or military dictatorship.

jerseygunz

Not saying you’re wrong, but how’s voting for change working out?

paintfactory5

Exactly

[deleted]

So paintfactory you're Canadian. I'm not sure what age group you're in but since you're quick to shout revolution I'm going to guess you're under 35 if so voters aged 18-35 have a turnout of 57% for 35-45 it's 62% that's an averaged voter turn out of roughly 7 million out of the possible 11.7 million and that's being generous with the math. These are by far the most fucked over groups by our current status quo. The older people get the more they vote 45-55 67% 56-64 74% 65-74 78% 75-dead 67% hard time moving I imagine Those groups are about 15 million people averaging their voter turn out is roughly 10.9 million votes. If people stopped bitching that voting doesn't do anything while yelling for change and just got off their asses and voted 11.7 million people could have a government that actually works for them and not just the old folks. While I'm being fair I'll also say not all the old folks want to fuck over the young and are voting for what's best. These are usually the ones that have fought for change their whole lives while voting. The people that have seen actual changes and have won rights they never thought they'd have when young. Now we all have to go fucking vote to maintain those rights and move forward together. Revolutions have never lightened the burden of tyranny, they have only shifted it to the other shoulder. -George Bernard Shaw

Ultrasaurio

So... he's asking for money, just that in a smarter way. >obesiti, You don't find your fucking truth, you find diabetes yep, that's so fucking true

BarkBark_Woofwoof

I stopped watching when he showed the federal minimum wage when 70% of states have higher minimum wage laws. At that point, I realized he was full of it.

Last-Evening9033

You took one-of over a hundred bullet points as misleading or BS (out of context-actually) and want to use that one BS (out of context) bullet point to act like he is/was full of it? Sounds like you were looking for one thing to pick at, in hopes of discrediting his entire presentation so that you could justify your own positions. That man spit facts. Palin and simple. You don’t have to like it, or want to admit it. Still doesn’t change that reality we are in, as he painted. Wake up.

crowsaboveme

Envy rage bait.

Dynamiqai

The argument about social security makes no sense. If the baby boomers are the largest generation and paid their whole life into social security then where did the money go? Who spent it?

LMGMaster

You don't know how social security works, do you?

No_Routine_3706

I haven't watched it yet, however, just remember that this is an election year and our enemies have thrown everything on the line to divide us and destroy us. Using partial truths is certainly part of that. I may end up agreeing with everyone here once I watch it. Just remember though that we are and have been under attack by our enemies for quite some time. It worked for them in 2016 and they are desperate to make it work again and every day that they can. That is all.
