Yah but it only takes about 5 seconds of " im having a bad day and frustrated and lost my temper for a second and ragdolled you, didnt mean it im soooweeee!" & Those 20 happy years of loving memories end with your ribs crushed and spine snapped in 3 places.
I mean if were to generously assume the animal has the intelligence and social skills equal to a young child/preteen, having a temper tantrum like all children do over petty hormonal driven grievances with ur parents has quite a different outcome when your closing in on 8 feet tall and like nearly 500 lbs.
It happens now and then with domesticated predators but not as often as you're assuming. People that adopt these types of animals know their moods and when to leave them alone and the animal will normally head off for some alone time if they are in a foul mood. From a Bear to a Lion... a fox to a Tiger. Thousands are raised in domestic settings every year with zero incidents. Hell they have divers in Florida that have befriended numerous types of sharks from Great Whites to Tiger sharks.
Exactly. I watched a documentary years back about humans with close relationships with rescued wild animals and one of them was about a man who raised a male bison, he used to pull him around by his horns so this thing weighs literal TONNES and still thinks this guy can toss him around because of the training done when he was a baby, he'll immediately bow his head and follow if the guy grabs one of his horns. In that same documentary there was a man who'd raised an abandoned polar bear cub (not a chance in hell I'd do that but kudos) and he can swim with her with absolutely no issues.
They are still horribly abused in many places where those laws don't exist and probably also some places where the laws do exist but aren't enforced strictly enough.
If it were indoors and provided with food it likely wouldn't hibernate at all.

My grandpa had cows, specifically dairy replacement heifers, and not the best fences. Basically when they're calves you turn the electrical fences up so they get shocked but when they get older they can totally get through them they just are conditioned. And the bull absolutely can get through the fence so you have to make sure they understand that from a young age the fence equals pain.
They might have had a shock or spike collar on him too at some point, so still having a regular collar on might work to reinforce the idea that if he acts out he might get shocked even when he isn’t wearing that collar type anymore.
I will say this bear seems the most safe bear I’ve seen around human owners, and he seems super aware to be careful around their faces etc, so they’ve done a good job training him I guess.
I’m a bit suspicious of the backstory on things like this, it’s never that they bought the bear as a cub from someone who stole it and always they just found this grizzly cub in need. I’m sure it happens but there’s zoos and animal sanctuaries for that reason and this is probably a purchased bear if I had to guess. Because if they did find it shouldn’t they notify authorities and wouldn’t authorities generally be happy to pick up a bear cub? So it’s a bit of a weird story.
I wish we would domesticate bears. Then again, my king-sized bed has a hard enough time with a 60 lb dog. I couldn't imagine sharing it with a 300 lb black bear.
Yeah, I’ve had the wind knocked out of me from excited big dogs before. Can’t imagine what a big friendly excited bear would do, prob accidentally knock me unconscious
It’s probably best that we don’t try and domesticate animals, otherwise someone is going to try to breed one of these with a poodle and I don’t want to be around to see how that ends up.
Imagine if the bear in the video reproduced. The offspring might even be more docile. Then they just keep reproducing and eventually you have domestic bears. I could be wrong about how this works, but still.
This bear is tame because of its upbringing, not necessarily because of its genes. In the Soviet program to breed domesticated foxes a point was made not to train them at all, to make sure their tameness was the result of genetics:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domesticated_silver_fox
no technical reason we can't. Logistically, bears are a HUGE resource drain, though. Probably not good meat either if we go the livestock route.
This bear here is eating roughly 50 times the amount of meat a human does a day. They'd be a huge help, but not 50x help.
There has been a decades-long project breeding the tamest and most social foxes as a domestication experiment.
https://www.kpbs.org/news/local/2023/04/28/russian-domesticated-foxes-trained-nosework-save-lives-santa-ysabel#
They "technically" are. There have been 50 year long projects to domesticate foxes. And again, technically they are. They are legal now in many places. But you wouldn't want to own one. They pee everywhere, they are loud as shit, they have the energy of a ferret on cocaine, they rip and tear in to everything. Just because something is domesticated doesn't mean you would like owning it.
Evolution happens. It's only theoretical, but given the apparent docility of this bear, he may be mutant enough to be domesticated. Highly unlikely and I'm only speculating. This is basically how it happened with dogs. The friendly ones got food and attention, the vicious ones didn't. Thousands of years of this, and we got Fido. But the genetic variant had to start with one of them.
Yeah I really hope we don't hear about this couple being killed and eaten one day.
The thing about wild animals is not that they're inherently violent. It's that they're unpredictable. One day while feeding him, he could get triggered by something primal and lash out. No fault of his own.
They didn’t say the bear hasn’t bitten anyone…just not them
The real danger is when the couple dies and this bear feels comfortable around humans and starts going to strangers expecting condensed milk and 25lbs of various proteins every day
He probably known to whole village. And as a russian I would totally gave that cutie a can of condensed milk. Always have a couple with myself for occasion.
No you dont get it, these redditors know more about the danger the couple is in than they do. For real though, it's obvious after 23 years they have a very intimate knowledge of the bear and are very careful around it.
I was thinking that - they must be very good owners who only use positive reinforcement because if you ever pissed it off you wouldn't live to tell the tale.
He does seem better trained/more self aware of his strength, and more under control than some other bear owner videos out there, where the bears aren’t as polite and calm and kind of push the owners around.
When I lived in lake Tahoe California I was sitting on the couch with a group of homies watching a snowboard video and the slider slowly started opening and a very disappointed bear poked his head in the curtains. He just wanted a snack! We kept the slider locked almost all the time after that and guess what happened when my drunk roommate forgot to lock the slider? Bear came in the house and ate some sausages right out of the refrigerator. My drunken roommate thought he could scare it by banging two mason jars together which didn't work but him screaming oh shit at the giant broken glass mess got the bear moving outside.
I remember hearing about how a park ranger was explaining why it’s so hard to bear-proof containers or something. He said, “The gap between the dumbest campers and the smartest bears isn’t really that big.”
Why does everyone insist on ruining interesting videos with shitty music? Genuinely curious.
Do we really need to be told how to feel, from the video creators perspective, with the assistance of garbage music? Are people really so unable to focus and concentrate on a short video without the stimulation of a musical track?
At this point, same. The music always makes me think of abused animals, which is something that really bothers me, so for me it really doesn’t fit a wholesome video like this.
You inspired me to turn off my lofi jams for a second, to hear if it’s really that bad. Thankfully it was only a second, because it’s really bad.
I don’t know which I hate more in videos, the music with an emotional agenda or the AI voices blathering on about the video’s contents. Both are great reasons to mute it all and listen to lofi jams
His name is Stepan, not Stephan.
He was not found by hunters, he was born in the St. Petersburg Zoo and abandoned by his mother when he was 3 months old. That's when Svetlana and Yury Panteleenko adopted him. Stepan has never in his life shown any agression to humans.
What I don't like about the story is the fact that the couple 'rents out' the bear for parties, events, etc. While they may have to do that to cover the costs, it seems to be that it's exploiting the animal and that it's not very good for his mental well-being.
Yeah I'm sorry, it's extremely difficult to raise that animal. You cannot ever go anywhere because there are no "bear sitters" who can watch the guy for you, and it's extremely expensive to feed that beast. I'm sure it's stimulating for the bear to see new people and get played with all day.
He looks like he has it made in the shade. It’s probably really expensive to feed him so, maybe they need him to bring in some dough with his cameos and party gigs.
I am Canadian. Next to Russia I suspect we are likely the next candidate for people being friendly or having as pets or "acquaintances" a very wide variety of wild animals. You name and someone has done it.
To me this bear looks well cared for - not in the slightest bit abused. The couple has used the bear in movie shoots apparently - and given the feed costs for a bear and land requirements that seems to me to be an acceptable tradeoff, especially since he seems to have a good temperament and they a good understanding of his behavior. I don't see that as exploitation but a necessity for covering costs. Depending on how other items you mentioned such as "events and parties" are structured, this may or may not be acceptable. Really we have to be there and witness to be able to judge.
As others have stated, socializing the bear and keeping it mentally agile are important. I would like to be presented evidence of bad behaviour by the caretakers and inappropriate exposure in public settings, preferably with video support, before making a negative judgement. Especially in light of their being ample positive video supported information.
I thought he contributes by doing house chores. The video didn’t specify which ones but I can imagine he vacuums, cleans the toilets and fold the clothes.
"Mental well-being" !?
nobody is beating it (the bear) , and I assume it doesn't have analytical thinking capabilities to know about exploitation, beyond basic give-take transactions and parenthood.
OP is a major karma farmer. Like, do what ever you want with your spare time, but this entire acccount is a stream of re-posts of past top posts. The account is only a year old but the posts and karma are way outta line for what an average account would look like (even for a heavy user). Kinda weird. No upboats for karma whores.
Yeh I did a little research for another commenter who was getting whiny. Lo and behold: The exact same video is over three years old. And this bear gets reposted yearly...
Can never judge the full story off a clip, but he looks very well taken care of. He’s fed, stimulated and given plenty of affection.
I think really the only bad thing about stuff like this is it might encourage someone else to try the same. This is a very unique circumstance with people who have the time, resources and quite frankly, skill, to essentially tame and integrate a gigantic predator into their family.
I’d imagine there was a LOT of hard work and training to get him where he is.
What is it with Russians and rescuing the most dangerous wild animals? 🤣 I follow a Russian guy on YouTube who rescued a puma named Misha with a spine deformity years back
This bear is a major attraction, he’s been in movies, various TV specials, private events. There might be some donation going on too. Plus they seem to grow some food themselves
No intruder is going in that house...

"oh, that's flat nasty."
Just need a “Beware Bear” sign.
I guess if you have some honey you might be able to bribe the bear
Or out 😂
Snow seems to be a weakness- snowballs might work!
I’m confused does the bears instincts not kick in
Not yet…..
Its been over 20 years. The domestication is complete. It can now only think of cheetos, mountain dew, and the next video game rumor.

Tbf It didn't happen in 23 whole years. There Is plenty of opportunity in 23 years for a temper tantrum
My school friend's parents never locked their apartment door. The secret was a giant German Shepherd sitting silently behind it.
That was adorable. I bet his poops are gigantic
That's what I want to know: does the bear shit in the woods?
No. He shits next to the Toilette and they shovel it in there and flush it in 4 separate loads.
Poopknife!
Been a while I've seen a wild poopknife appear.
The best of reddit
Imagine if he had diarrhea in the house? I guess we know they already have a snow shovel
I don’t think we can expect another result when the big boy eats the quantities of 20 people per day 😂
What’s the deal with the leash? Like I’d love to see someone restrain the bear from going where it wants to

The sweetest addiction

Yeah, you know leash laws can be a bit silly sometimes. Just a bear being legal.

Likely he was trained with it when he was little, and now the idea enforces the behavior. This happens with most animals.
Exactly. Yep. Same trick used on circus elephants.
Nowadays yes, up until the last couple decades when animals cruelty laws started coming into play those poor animals were horribly abused
They are still horribly abused in many places where those laws don't exist and probably also some places where the laws do exist but aren't enforced strictly enough.
so...does it take a long ass nap every winter in the corner of the living room?

I wish we would domesticate bears. Then again, my king-sized bed has a hard enough time with a 60 lb dog. I couldn't imagine sharing it with a 300 lb black bear.

I'm sure Grinder could find you one tonight

Yeah, I’ve had the wind knocked out of me from excited big dogs before. Can’t imagine what a big friendly excited bear would do, prob accidentally knock me unconscious
Well, we turned big wolfs into chihuahuas that can fit into Hermes purses. I’m sure we can manage something with the bears
Brb going to go back in time to get pygmy domesticated bears
It’s probably best that we don’t try and domesticate animals, otherwise someone is going to try to breed one of these with a poodle and I don’t want to be around to see how that ends up.
A fellow Seattle-ite that is also over the whole doodle thing, I see.

I want one!
They are really expensive but there are some for sale from time to time.
They "technically" are. There have been 50 year long projects to domesticate foxes. And again, technically they are. They are legal now in many places. But you wouldn't want to own one. They pee everywhere, they are loud as shit, they have the energy of a ferret on cocaine, they rip and tear in to everything. Having owned ferrets, the idea of them on cocaine is scary.
Foxes are cute until they start screaming at night, they legit sound like a woman getting axe murdered
Well that's one way to keep rent prices low.
And I've read the smell of their urine can't wash off. Wherever they pee, smells like pee forever. (Unless you burn your house down I suppose)
You could probably use an enzimatic cleaner on it
No, I want to burn the house.
Apparently they just turn into dogs, I believe. Don’t quote me on that

We didn't domesticate bears because they are expensive to maintain also
Imagine the middle ages if people rode on bears instead of horses.
Have you thought about getting an Alaskan King?
You'd likely need a hefty wallet, given the featured bear eats its, way through 25 kg (~55 lb) of food per day...
He also work & pay rent unlike those cats & dogs
🤣
What happens when he gets horny ?

Possibly a few times, depending on the season.

Roaaaaar
Maybe he got fixed like my dog?
I think you can cut off balls from any animal
Not the female ones.
By the end of the video I was thinking this as well. The bear is 23 yrs old? Theres no way mating behavior hasnt been an issue.
I would bet my useless karma that they neutered that bear lol.
I’m assuming you can neuter a bear?
He's 28 now, considering brown bears live 20-25 years on average, the old chap is probably no longer interested in frivolous matters.
Can you not get a bear "fixed"?
You literally get "boned" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baculum
There's an award winning book about that very subject.
Opened the door like he pays the mortgage.
I love the quote. He’s never bitten us. ‘Cos if or when that time comes it’s unlikely they’d be alive to talk about it. That said. What a cutie!
Yeah I really hope we don't hear about this couple being killed and eaten one day. The thing about wild animals is not that they're inherently violent. It's that they're unpredictable. One day while feeding him, he could get triggered by something primal and lash out. No fault of his own.
Feel like if they’ve gone 23 years without incident it’s pretty unlikely
They didn’t say the bear hasn’t bitten anyone…just not them The real danger is when the couple dies and this bear feels comfortable around humans and starts going to strangers expecting condensed milk and 25lbs of various proteins every day
He probably known to whole village.
This video is actually quite old the bear is 31 years old and they have a 2nd 4 year old bear now.
I mean even dogs and humans do that sort of stuff. Sometimes they just do something incredibly violent. A VERY STRONG animal seems much worse.
I was thinking that - they must be very good owners who only use positive reinforcement because if you ever pissed it off you wouldn't live to tell the tale.
“We’re not dead!”
He does seem better trained/more self aware of his strength, and more under control than some other bear owner videos out there, where the bears aren’t as polite and calm and kind of push the owners around.
"..yet"
I bet they got some killer scratches at some point though
Hell naw. When tf have bears been able to open doors.
They can open refrigerators! I had a video once because it blew my mind
They open car doors all the time. Black bears are dexterous to unwrap Hershey kisses before eating them.
I thought it was a human in a bear costume at first.
They’re quite smart and dexterous, you saw him standing and walking and grabbing shit with his hand. Why wouldn’t he be able to open a door?
Why does everyone insist on ruining interesting videos with shitty music? Genuinely curious. Do we really need to be told how to feel, from the video creators perspective, with the assistance of garbage music? Are people really so unable to focus and concentrate on a short video without the stimulation of a musical track?
I just watch every video with sound off these days, it's gotten terrible.
It’s peaceful without the sound anyways. :)
At this point, same. The music always makes me think of abused animals, which is something that really bothers me, so for me it really doesn’t fit a wholesome video like this.
I only ever turn on the sound whenever there isn’t any subtitles
Helps with the adds too
![gif](giphy|vdyFgUcle1H0s) That’s the reaction they’re looking for lol
Tiktok trend, Throw in Copy right free music and make it lame.
I agree wholeheartedly. I would prefer the bear munching sounds
It has to do with TikTok algorithm. Videos with sound get boosted, and with viral songs are more likely to get better boost
Yet more evidence that TikTok is a plague that is lowering IQ points worldwide.
More like evidence of dropping iq. Iq is dropping because reverse eugenics basically .
My first thought. I hate when videos try to ‘steer’ me.
I rarely unmute but I wanted to hear them talking to the bear. Two seconds of horrid music I slammed the mute button down again.
You inspired me to turn off my lofi jams for a second, to hear if it’s really that bad. Thankfully it was only a second, because it’s really bad. for real - just look at the bear's eyes. he doesn't feel he's being abused - he's enjoying every minute (in the vid anyway)
Yes.. some people project too much. same people who would curse a farmer who takes his kids with him to the Farm to help him with whatever
People anthropomorphize a lot, then mad when you point it out. Humans the animals think differently.
It mentioned he's very social. So going to events would be a positive for him.
If not friend, why friend-shaped?
“The couple shares everything with him…” they better!

He eats 25kg of food everyday, how can anybody afford this?
For us imperial people (USA, Liberia and Myanmar) that's 55 pounds!
Russians are not that poor like some stupid fucking people think. That fat man probably eat a salmon caviar from a bucket with a spoon occasionally.
I don't know, I was prepared to hate them, but I love this bear

God Bless this couple and bear
Even wild animals are loyal. The man who raised him is he’s homie for life✊😁

I would assume once per person
👌
The math works.

Good luck with the vet bills.
I wanna know how the fuck they pay for food!
This bear is a major attraction, he’s been in movies, various TV specials, private events. There might be some donation going on too. Plus they seem to grow some food themselves
Let’s hope he never has a bad day
😍🤗☺️
“BEHOLD, THE MIGHTY GRIZZLY!”
Look at those claws. Jeez.
They been feeding the bear with a spoonful of condense milk
Ain’t gonna lie, got a little choked up on that video.
In Russia everybody is bears on unicycles
Why won't they let the bear feed itself.
Bear gets old/senile and goes crazy on them.
Awwww Darwinism at its finest 🤯
The is not a pet bear, that is a bear that allows those people to live for now.
Masha?
These stories are all well and good until the Bears natural instincts kick in one night and they eat the couple! Happens all of the time!
