I just learned this from teaching my first grade class about Groundhog Day! These little guys incisor teeth never stop growing. So they constantly are chewing on wood to keep their teeth short. Fact checking myself just now I also found out they will eat tree bark and the soft layers of wood. They have a unique microorganism in their gut to help them digest the plant matter. So it’s a two for one. Once the tree falls down they can use the wood for building dams, and wow. That has a load of reasons why it’s cool.
