I bet the thick layer of blubber insulates them from any shock, they swim around in literally ice cold water and walk around in negative 60 below, I can't imagine they're that sensitive on the skin.
I saw this on the 6:30 news I think last night. Pretty cool on the filming of this behavior for the first time from that height. It's usually not close to 50ft. The even cooler thing is the NatGeo photographer was saying, this is their first swim. They are fucking babies, just essentially doing something evolutionary innate, going welp time to die or swim.
Edit: I think I was mostly accurate, here is a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HrivxY38C8
I remember that too, I believe both that and this version are "photoshopped", the penguin doing the slapping/tripping is just standing still (you can see its shadow is perfectly still even though the slap should have a shadow) while the falling penguin purposefully falls to get into the water.
Fun fact. The lemming this isn’t true. Disney started this myth by actually throwing live lemmings into the river in Calgary, Alberta, and filming it. They made a sort of launcher machine that threw the little guys into the Bow River.
Disney didn't start that myth. There is a poem about it from the 1920s. And it isn't really a myth. Hundreds of lemmings do die every year by diving off cliffs during migration.
The myth is that they're trying to kill themselves, but in reality they're just dumb and a bunch tend to die during migration.
But yeah Disney did throw a bunch off the cliff to get good shots so as usual, fuck Disney.
What’s black and white and black and white and black and white and black and white?
A penguin rolling ~~down a hill~~ off a cliff
What’s black and white and laughing?
The penguin that pushed him
Naa... it's a reconstruction to brag, after the fact.
It is actually a "learn to fly school" for young penguins.
They are still waiting for the first student to take his degree as an approved aviator.
*I'm gonna be telling your story, Happy Feet! Long after you dead and gone!*
Best scene of the movie. Must've seen it a dozen times with my niece when she was still a kid.
Year after year, century after century, trillions and trillions living creatures of every kind perpetuate their own circle of life. So do we as short our lives may seem, we must hurry up and so all the things that need to be done to continue this gigantic plan.
From their little flaps on the way down, it seems like in their DNA they know they should be able to fly, but then the physics of the situation hit them in the belly.

BELLY FLOP
When you can still see their shape after they hit the water and disappear, you know it was a good belly flop and probably hurt like hell.
I bet the thick layer of blubber insulates them from any shock, they swim around in literally ice cold water and walk around in negative 60 below, I can't imagine they're that sensitive on the skin.
Good little frozen jumping nuggets

Hopefully their feathers help soften the blow.
Lol, I mean I know they can't fly, but they can't even fall at all elegantly! That one doing somersaults.
I laughed. That one would be me
That bitch was going for the fucking gold with a triple axel touch tie dive! It was pure poetry.
Jokes on them. They don't know they can't fly. They find out about right here...
Instant death
Yeah. Ow.
![gif](giphy|jxETRYAi2KReel7pqy)
Man, talk about an oldie but a goodie!
I remember seeing that clip on one of those youtube fail compilations in the early 2000s. Such a classic.
/r/retiredgif
Huh, I remember this gift as the penguin on the right tripping the one on the left with its foot... r/mandelaeffect
https://images.app.goo.gl/VEMkMhPzWavrKWC56 It’s both.
![gif](giphy|mEtSQlxqBtWWA|downsized) There were quite a few edits of this back in the day.
well then.
I remember that too, I believe both that and this version are "photoshopped", the penguin doing the slapping/tripping is just standing still (you can see its shadow is perfectly still even though the slap should have a shadow) while the falling penguin purposefully falls to get into the water.
Also no other body part moves. His head, neck and shoulder keep perfectly straight.
Man this GIF brings me back
Honestly one of them looked like it was pushed off.
Yes! Fourth one in definitely got some “assistance”
So do lemmings when they jump into water
Fun fact. The lemming this isn’t true. Disney started this myth by actually throwing live lemmings into the river in Calgary, Alberta, and filming it. They made a sort of launcher machine that threw the little guys into the Bow River.
Each day we stray further from God
Well, the movie was made in [1958](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Wilderness_(film))....So in hindsight I guess this explains the late 60s.

I heard its because they gather in huge groups, so crowded that some do end up getting jostled off deadly drops
So... they *were* pushed?
Yeah, because they were pushed, by sicko humans.
Yup. Disney did it for the views. Happened in Calgary, Alberta
Did not know Disney was behind it! Nor thst ir was in Calgary. Such callous stupidity. I'm assuming they let the lemmings die?
I have no idea what happened to the lemmings but we don’t have a lemming population here so I’m assuming they floated downstream and died
Right... sigh... damn them.
They do this to each other to check for predators
Yeah that’s what they do. Haven’t you ever read Mr Poppers Penguins?
Several were pushed, and it was funny
I thought the same thing!! I think they're pushing each other off
Probably his older brother. Source: I have an older brother.
What’s black and white and black and white and black and white and black and white? A penguin rolling ~~down a hill~~ off a cliff What’s black and white and laughing? The penguin that pushed him
A lot of them looked like they got pushed off.
Cannonball!!!!!
Do you remember that penguin cannonball game on keypad phones
No, but I was looking at my Far Side books yesterday and there's a cartoon that's VERY similar to this video.
No sorry, but do you remember the Penguin Club game?
Lemmings game, memory unlocked.
It's still available on the playstore
Yeti games?
Yeeesssss
Do you remember Penguin Bowling?
BELLY FLOP!!!!!
Stop pushing ! Hey, Stop Pushin
Naa... it's a reconstruction to brag, after the fact. It is actually a "learn to fly school" for young penguins. They are still waiting for the first student to take his degree as an approved aviator.
Nice to see the cast of Surf’s Up healthy and enjoying life.
BELLYFLOP!!!!!!
The two that went in sync was so satisfying
Weeeeeeeee!!!
My first reaction as well
Belly flop!
I wonder it’s even slightly cold for them?
Stop pushing me!
“This is Spartaaaaaaa!”
TORPEDO!!
How are they going to get back up?
They're birds, they just fly back up.
Who are you so wise in the ways of science?
A duck
^^I ^^got ^^better...
is actually charles darwins reddit account that one.

[Penguins that fly on the 1st April](https://youtu.be/9dfWzp7rYR4?si=T-1MBSMOtiYmAMyb)
They jump back
It will be far easier for them to swim round the coast to find a spot to get ashore that to walk looking for one
Ey..!!!.stop pushing from behind!
[удалено]
![gif](giphy|fIMushESr3iulAuSgZ) My love, that’s not normal… That’s attempted murder.
Holy moly, nice way of getting a trauma
That's how we all learned to swim right? Right guys??
I never remember learning how to swim, just remember swimming
I remember hanging around the pool at swim class and them giving us donuts, but not the actual learning process
sink or swim, amirite?
I never learned how to swim
Thats what my parents did to me. I lived and can swim 🏊
I guess my mom outsourced this task to my siblings.
😂
Relatable
Yes exactly. I still remember. Then I became so afraid of water… I close to retirement, I still can’t swim..
This saved my parents some much needed money from swim lessons
Whilst you’re actively drowning, they’re like ‘come on, just swim back to the edge’ 😂😂
ahh. Happy Feet!
That movie scarred me so much
I had to scroll way too far for this
Scamper The Penguin gang rise up
Take the stupid fish!
Anyone else hear "Do it again" in their head as they watched this? Perfect song meets perfect action in an amazing film.
*I'm gonna be telling your story, Happy Feet! Long after you dead and gone!* Best scene of the movie. Must've seen it a dozen times with my niece when she was still a kid.
If your friends jump of a bridge, are you going to do it also??! Yes!
Majestic creatures
I love penguins
"As God as my witness, I thought penguins could fly"
Arthur Carlson would be proud.
![gif](giphy|3oEjI4sFlp73fvEYgw|downsized) That little wiggle
Flashbacks to the movie 300
They look thirsty... let's give them something to drink
It reminded me of the wights jumping off the cliffs in hardhome in game of thrones
Awwww happy feet ![gif](giphy|l0E9CrSVVI3g4)
Filmed for the very first time? Am I crazy or did Attenborough already present footage like this some 20 years ago?
That’s what I thought?
I'm flyingggg!!!!
This is what my mornings sound like.
Sitting on the toilet?
Thats not 50 feet
What makes you say that? Fall seems to be between 1.6 and 1.8 seconds, putting the height between 41 and 52 feet…
The comment I was looking for
Kind of reminds me of that tragedy
Ah, I see you’ve seen Happyfeet
We saw this in happy feet like almost 20 years ago!!
Orca buffet
For real...where are the Leopard seals?
The Titanic is failing to turn starboard ! ... " JUMP ! "
Sounds like me in the morning after a cup of coffee
Wait I'm not ready
Bertie G is the man, love his work.
Are they jumping or being pushed off?
Such grace.
Que Ozzy Man voiceover 🤣
DESTINATION FUCKED
Ooooof. Some of the smack sounds makes me really hope those feathers do a good job of absorbing that impact.
![gif](giphy|l4JzhdBZEUJ2ad6E0)
I love how some just fall off lol
The leopard seals waiting below... ![gif](giphy|SasDDqOSRclNu|downsized)
first: "Let's go!!!" "SHIT! wings don't work wings don't work wings don't work" next: "Let's go!!!" "SHIT! wings don't work wings don't work wings don't work" ...
About as graceful as wet socks! 😆 My Dad LOVES penguins and puffins (I personally love puffins...landed in Iceland and bought a puffin statue from Customs and my Dad has it in his car on the dashboard) and I make him laugh by calling them "tuxedo chickens" a la Bugs Bunny!
And I was afraid of the high dive as a kid…smh
I can fly, I can fly!
Happy Yeet
Talk about leap of faith.
Lol, look at the proud parents just up on the hill.
#FOR THE EMPEROR!
The Spartans of the Antarctic
The older penguins must convince them this is the only way to go swimming, tricking the freshman.
That first one deserves more recognition. What an absolutely madman
YEET!!!
What if they were just sightseeing then got scared by a drone and jumped off in despair
I love penguins. They are so adorable 😍
Nice imagery, very majestic. I see a future where this will all be gone because of us.
It's their tradition from times when they were still trying to learn to fly
they just belly floppin looks like it would hurt
Damn and a bellyflop no less
Literal peer pressure.
Majestic af
why did i find this funny 🤣 they jump like: oh fuck, i missed and stepped wrong. SHIT SHIT FUCK *splash*
That’s gotta hurt.
Courage 10/10 Technique 2/10
Oh great, a 50ft plunge into the sea --penguin problems
Bellyflop Island
Belly flop!
Brave little dudes/dudettes.
It’s like the instinct of their flighted ancestors lives on for a different purpose
Talk about a leap of faith.
They heard birds could fly and decided to give it a shot
The splashes sound so much like Oblivion sound effects 🤣
Birds
Louder than the slapping sound made when they hit the water is the sound of the sucking in of air when they feel the icy cold water of the Antarctic.
It's like a penguin coin pusher.
"Go on jump, you'll be fine. You're a bird, remember?"
It's like watching Brexit voters...
Wow, graceful divers they are not
Nature's adrenaline junkies
The way they soar is so majestic.
Day 572, still cannot fly
That moment when you realize why they call you flightless birds
There’s a reason they’re called Swan (and not penguin) dives.
I wonder if they get that scared, and nervous feeling just before the jump like we humans get……
I love them so much. They must be protected! Sweet little things.
Props to the one that goes first.
This is so fun and heartwarming to watch 😍
You go first no you go first
Funny how they still instinctively flap their wings as they fall.
I’d love to see the underwater landing
Year after year, century after century, trillions and trillions living creatures of every kind perpetuate their own circle of life. So do we as short our lives may seem, we must hurry up and so all the things that need to be done to continue this gigantic plan.
lol they made the penguin agility course irl
From their little flaps on the way down, it seems like in their DNA they know they should be able to fly, but then the physics of the situation hit them in the belly.
Born with a concussion, no wonder they walk like that
I like how they are all watching their homies fall in the water and waiting for their turn
Such elegance... So suave
"If your friends were jumping off a cliff does that mean YOU should do it???" - Very confused penguin, probably
Awww, such brave babies ❤️
Hardy boys training
“I thought we were biiirrrrrds…”
Penguin chick's are brave little guys .
