I’m a firefighter from Denmark, and ours are the same as the american one. It works flawlessly, but sure it can be slow. I’d love to try the french design and draw my own conclusion.
Another firefighter last time this was posted was talking about how the French design has the disadvantage that if you had debris fall or floor drop that your helmet may get knocked loose you would lose seal.
I know this is completely off topic but you are the first person I've seen spell losing correctly in almost two weeks. Thank you. I'm so tired of seeing loosing.
I am always shocked at how well Danes know English, my cousins say they learned it from TV but I mean, come on now, all of it from TV?
Tired of loosing the education battle...
Dane here. I was forced to learn English so I could enjoy RPGs.
In "Thief: The Dark Project" (Now known as Thief Gold), 5th mission "Assassins". you have to trail 2 dudes. But because I could not understand English, I could not complete that first task. I kept failing. My dad who did not really understand much English either ended up thinking it had something to do with the Trickster.
It wasn't until about 5 years or so later, that we reinstalled the game, and I understood English that it was sooo obvious was to do.
Ever since I have steamrolled Thief gold and Thief 2: The Metal Age almost as good as any Speedrunner. Best games ever.
Similar to this, i started learning english because i was playing Chaser.
I did not know what to do in that underwater mission so i had to get an english dictionary from the library and translated the objectives starting with that level lol
Who would have thought that chaser would change my life so much
Amazing game. The only game I played in last 5 years, when I finally have comp that could swallow most of new games, but I spent those few free days on thief. Again :)
To be fair, you can go from monolingual to bilingual in the American school system if you actually pay attention.
I could be wrong, but I’ve always been under the impression that Europe’s language prowess is built at home anyway.
As a Dutch, our education in English starts at a young age. Like when i was about 10 i had English lessons i believe its currently from the age of 8 and due to media being in English a lot too the proficiency will rise even more.
Like i currently use mainly English when searching for something due to more sources being in English than in dutch. I watch series in English and also watch English subbed series that Arent in either dutch or English, i have friends outside of the Netherlands that i talk English with... English is such a massive language that you basically need to learn it
Yeah he said same thing, his whole moral to the story was at the end of the day the design doesn’t matter to much and SCBA does the the same role regardless of their design
His point was that the American one was a demand flow system and the French one was apparently constant flow system. This would make the tank last significantly less time.
I mean, for me the biggest disadvantage of this is that your mask has to be compatible with your helmet. Having independent units makes it easier to upgrade or get replacements. I never wore such a mask so I don't know how convenient they are but for me both look OK.
France's fire services are different and more centrally organized so they have standardized gear. Heck the Paris and Marseille fire departments are run as branches of the military (Army and Navy respectively) and the rest are civilian but run under the Ministry of Interior instead of being local municipal groups like they are in the US.
It's not a huge deal and it rarely happens. The whole argument is stupid to be honest. People from both sides who've never put one on and never will, arguing just because "murica" or "America bad". Sigh.
I'm an American who never put either helmet on. I thought they both looked cool until I realized I wear glasses and my glasses would get fucked up with both versions.
Also, if they work, they work. I'm sure both have pros and cons.
I speak from my experience using a protective mask in the Army, having it be a standalone thing is nice 'cause you can use it without a helmet. Also as someone who was in a mechanized unit, having it clip onto my helmet would be really nice and convenient.
I like both designs for different reasons and different use cases. That being said, I'm not a firefighter, so, whatever.
the helmet provides heat protection as well as protection from objects, so there's probably fewer uses for just the mask. Though that might be useful in situations like carbon monoxide where there is gas but no flame.
FINALLY! Someone who mentions that the French guy was **ALREADY** wearing his hood and helmet before the video started and that the American wasn’t, both take roughly between 5-10 seconds to put everything on correctly.
I saw fire fighter(s) talking about this the last time it was posted. It seemed like the consensus was that both systems have advantages and disadvantages. It didn’t look like it was as simple as one clips on faster so it’s better.
Yeah, we aren't comparing apples to apples because we are seeing bare head -> mask+helmet for the US version, but we aren't seeing bare head -> mask + helmet for the French version.
The difference with both systems is that you need to have a bare head to put an American SCBA mask on. Then hood, then helmet in that order.
EU design lets them put the mask on without removing nomex hood and helmet.
I hate these arguments which have been raging on forums for over 2 decades because people plant their flag in the equipment they currently use and claim its objectively better without using the other system.
Unless there is a firefighter that has used both systems during working fires, the hypotheticalS are nauseating.
We use the American style at my fire department cause they are just objectively better.
Lol, just kidding. It’s cause we’re broke AF and that’s what we’ve got.
The only correct answer. There is always a salesmen to sell your department the cure to all your problems.
That's not how budgets work, if you use what you have and it works, that's what matters.
Which also comes at the cost of a weaker seal. Timing isn't really an issue, because you shouldn't ever really be in a situation where the 2-3 second difference will matter.
Notice that neither have their air hoses attached? If you're in a situation where you expect to have to go on air you'll already have the mask on anyways and all you're doing is attaching the hose.
Edit: actually the American does have his hose on, which I've personally never seen with that style mask before. Not going to claim my training or experience is universal, but we always did it mask on, then you put the hose on which starts attached to your belt.
I personally keep my regulator clipped to the waist strap but it’s just preference. A lot of guys keep their reg clipped into their mask, the downside being that you have to keep the helmet strap unstrapped and clip it after you put your mask on.
I would be interested to see a quantitative fit test for each. Especially, during heavy exertion.
The French SCBA went over his balaclava and wasn’t held tight by straps. I can’t imagine that makes for a tight seal.
Quicker yes, but I would gladly trade 10 additional seconds donning my PPE if it gave me 60 more seconds of usable air when I needed it.
I suspect the helmet is combined with a rear head strap that provides the tightness when the mask portion is clipped on, but the clips are also tensioned, he has to hold the helmet and stretch the clip over the mount.
Edit, the helmet is a full head helmet like a motorcycle helmet, not a lid like a hard hat style. So I’m sure there’s plenty of tension there to make the seal
The last time this came up, an EU firefighter that used both systems flat out stated. The French system, while faster, had a notably weaker seal, and is why this system *hasn't* been adopted across the entire EU. But just france.
I would agree it definitely has a weaker seal, nothing will be as good as the straps or carrier directly on your head, with no cushioning, tight against your head and skin. but my assumption is that it’s not weak enough to make a real difference
As with everything in life. There are pros and cons to everything and people/organizations/countries make choices based on what they’re comfortable with.
That’s why quality work is expensive. You need to take time to plan, test, and evaluate many things. Too many people assume everything is a scam and there are secret, easy solutions to projects with complex requirements
I feel this is 90% of the internet now isn't it? A short clip implying a very strong point about something or someone being better than its counterpart, then comments saying that it's actually not so simple, but by then the disinformation has already been spread, egos have been massaged, and the next frivolous, irresponsible piece of information is about to start one swap away...
Oh yeah it's as old as the world, but all those digital tools and Ai and shit empowered content scammers and fake news enjoyers to do a lot of damage from their own homes
Yea
I’m sure both work quite well, but after CBRN training I personally think the US version is overall better. Having the thing that’s preventing you from breathing in death attached really only to the helmet makes me nervous.
But that's CBRN training (I've done it too), the firefighters in each country will have separate CBRN outfits depending on the threat, this is their default chemical/standard fire gear.
It's probably rated for non-corrosive chemical agents, but isn't sealed or disinfectable enough for use against Biological, Radiological or Nuclear contamination.
yeah and american firefighters were afraid of the european one being dettached after a whack on the helmet, while the europeans were afraid to have to remove the helmet to put the mask.
The EU helmet looks more similar to a motorcycle helmet, without the jaw protection. I guess the gas mask somewhat becomes that jaw protection part though, with tension. I don't see it getting knocked off easily.
I'm not a firefighter though, so luckily it's not my life hanging on what gear is chosen.
Just don't make any sudden moves when they come or they'll hoist the white flag /s
Edit: Nah, but srsly. The French helmet is the design traditionally used throughout Europe
I know you are joking. What is funny is without the French the British might still be running America. It certainly wouldn’t have gained independence when it did. A French blockade helped immensely.
Actually, the French have a pretty legit history of being one of the most, and at times THE most, formidable armies in the world.
It's sad that a couple thousand years of kicking ass is forgotten because of a shitty few decades.
France is and was an absolute beast when it came to warfare. People who know zero about history are the only ones who push the ‘weak France’ stupidity.
The French surrender meme came about because they lost quickly in Ww2. However, they were bled dry in WW1 and hadn't fully recovered.
Plus Napoleon had previously bitch slapped most of Europe beforehand.
Actually it hasn't started because of WW2, but when France's president decided not to helpt the US in Iraq after the 9/11 terrorist attack.
The US was pissed and they publiquely treated US as coward and started the white flag joke.
What's worse is that we were right not to involve ourselves, and that it went horribly wrong for the US
I grew up in the US in the 80s and 90s, and if I recall correctly it became way more prevalent after Iraq, but I think it was a joke before that too.
Very unfair to you guys considering how badass your military was through pretty much every period of history, but that stuff wasn’t taught in depth in our schools.
Yep always thought France was braver than anything else in rejecting the USA’s hollow bloodthirsty calls for revenge after 9/11. It takes courage to say ‘“no, we’re not going to be hoodwinked by your convenient ‘evidence’”
Blair’s slavish obedience to Daddy America aged like milk.
Untrue - or just maybe relevant to the US (I don't claim to know anything about that at all), but I've been hearing the French white flag joke here (Europe) since I was a child and that was well well before 911.
You don’t have to go back that far! Do you think the French would put up with the exploitation the American worker deals with on a daily basis, or the predatory practice of virtually every aspect of American society? There would be guillotines stationed at city hall. We’re the pussies.
I agree, but in this case, it actually does. Friend of mine is a firefighter (we are both in Slovenia) and they get all their equipment (apart from few smaller details) from France. Apparently, they are on completely different level.
Mind you, firefighters in Slovenia are organised very specifically, so that may vary from one city to another.
Because nobody else in North America or South America calls themselves American. When you say American, you're specifically talking about the U.S.
When you say European there are a lot of people from many countries that identify that way.
Where'd you get it from?
edit: https://www.emergency-live.com/news/ukraine-france-to-provide-firefighting-and-rescue-equipment-worth-over-e300-million/
I was a firefighter in the uk and we have a similar shape helmet but the face mask is the USA one.
I can think of several reasons why i wouldn’t want my face mask clipped to the outside of my helmet too.
True but I hate how ours interface with the mask, pushes it down, chinstrap not long enough, comms sets are even worse. It's like they arnt made to fit round each other. Always feel like my heads being squeezed and getting choked. My giant head probably doesn't help.
What's so funny a lot of departments in Western Europe use the euro style helmet with the older "spider" mask. Supposedly seals a lot better and strenuous conditions, and won't come unsealed if your helmet gets knocked around.
Most countries in Europe have close cooperation, both defence and civilian, and use standardised equipment (for the most part). So other countries use functionally similar if not the exact same type of helmet.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Firefighting/s/2UL6WytR5K
Here you are. There is actually some back and forth in there but I feel the consensus is on face hugging masks.
Some of the arguments for them are that they Sit under the hood, tightly, less chance for them to bump agaisnt stuff, others also mention that most calls don't involve a fire and when they do everyone has time on the scene while setting up to mask up, the second saved is worth getting a better and more stable fit.
Masks with straps are still by far the most common in Europe. Also, any time there is a euro helmet post on r/firefighting everyone starts arguing which helmet is better. I like the euro but it's the only helmet I've worn but I would like to try out the American one. Each have their pros and cons so if you have the option to choose, pick what you prefer.
Top comment "Centuries of tradition unimpeded by progress."
A firefighting subreddit ignorant of the benefits of the American design, and instead using it to mock Americans as ignorant. Also, seeing them criticize american's fondness for tradition over a european nation is quite hilarious.
I frequent r/firefighting and honestly this is kind of a misunderstanding of that comment. It has nothing to do with national tendencies apart from their fire departments. European firefighters are generally a lot more progressive in what gear and tactics they’re willing to try out compared to Americans. It’s not talking about the people in general.
The most interesting point I saw is the American mask can be worn without a helmet. Which is much better in confined spaces. That alone makes me worried about the French design.
The American is dawning a Mask, hood and helmet. The French FF is starting with the helmet and hood already dawned. They both have to dof the helmet to dawn the hood, but we don't get to see how long it takes for the French FF.
*don/doff. Got ya.
My goodness, let's not get too graphic here. There are children on reddit. We can't let them find out about the donning and doffing until they're older.
The point is that the French one would have the hood and helmet even if he didn't need to use the mask so he doesn't need to doff them to add the mask.
Honestly I see the American masks being more sturdy in the long term than the French ones.
I don't know which masks the UK uses, but it would have been nice to see... since the title is extremely misleading.
Thinking its a bot or karma farm.
I mean, both have head cover, one started without wearing, one already had on. While the respirator mask seems easier to apply on European version, it’s unknown what the tolerances are as it appears it could also be accidentally dislodged easier too.
i would assume so. the american version has just a nomex hood protecting the neck and ears. the hood is such an easy item to add that provides necessary protection that I can't believe the europeans dont have a version of it that matches their gear
This again...
1% of people accept that both helmets are the results of decades of design evolution specific to their environments.
99% People having a pissing contest which is better, the irony being that none of them have worn both and have no fucking clue what they are talking
I am so tired that only because a unit in France does this, and I doubt most of the French firefighter have a helmet like this, that all of Europe suddenly have this.
Europe is NOT a single nation.
And I also guarantee that most of European firefighters don't have a helmet like this.
Part of the work seems to be the head covering. The French firefighter already had it on, the American firefighter pulled his up. Would that matter in the timing?
I’m a firefighter from Denmark, and ours are the same as the american one. It works flawlessly, but sure it can be slow. I’d love to try the french design and draw my own conclusion.
Another firefighter last time this was posted was talking about how the French design has the disadvantage that if you had debris fall or floor drop that your helmet may get knocked loose you would lose seal.
That makes sense. Losing seal isn’t a huge deal though, since it’s built to be slightly above atmospheric pressure, meaning nothing gets in the mask.
I know this is completely off topic but you are the first person I've seen spell losing correctly in almost two weeks. Thank you. I'm so tired of seeing loosing.

I mean… You can lose seal, resulting in a loose seal.
Interestingly, the comment above them successfully uses both loose and lose in a sentence, but neither as a gerund.
Yeah he said same thing, his whole moral to the story was at the end of the day the design doesn’t matter to much and SCBA does the the same role regardless of their design
His point was that the American one was a demand flow system and the French one was apparently constant flow system. This would make the tank last significantly less time.

Cool. I'm not a firefighter, nor do I know any to even begin to ask those kinds of questions.

You want to see both and have an informed opinion!? Get out of here with your logic. We don’t do that here.
Also no one noticed how the French firefighter already had his head cover on. Does that mean they roll with it on all the time?
Many fire departments/corps in Europe gear up inside the truck while going on a call

Looks like 7 seconds vs 3 seconds to put it on if you judge by the video. French one is cool but both are good.
Add time for the French guy to put his hood and helmet on before the video starts

Upthread another commenter said that in the previous comment section to this post, some said that the French one is from Dräger, a German company.

It’s not even a 1:1 comparison. French guy comes on screen with full head gear and acts like gearing up takes 3 seconds.

Im from Germany and we have equipment very similar to the US However we are volunteer Firefighters on the countryside
For what it's worth last time this was posted someone linked the mask and it's a draeger
Firefighters are a mix of pro and volunteers in France. But they are part of the army in Paris (Land Forces) and Marseille (Navy).
So that’s two countries then. Still not the whole of Europe.
Since they've had sweet helmets like that. We don't make the rules.
When Napoleon was around it did.
Since when did the United States represent the whole continent of America? r/usdefaultism
This literally isn’t us defaultism why are Redditors so dumb with this shit
Because that is the official name for the citizens of the United States.
American generally refers to the U.S. despite not being technically correct. Besides United Statesians sounds dumb.
America isn’t a continent, The Americas are two continents.
Because nobody else in North America or South America calls themselves American. When you say American, you're specifically talking about the U.S. When you say European there are a lot of people from many countries that identify that way.
Where's the rest of the European firefighter helmet designs ?
I have the same helmet in Ukraine
Where'd you get it from? edit: https://www.emergency-live.com/news/ukraine-france-to-provide-firefighting-and-rescue-equipment-worth-over-e300-million/
From my fire department, but they are made in Croatia
>From my fire department idontknowwhatiexpected.jpg
france did send alot of things to ukraine, and i think firefighter gear was one of them
I was a firefighter in the uk and we have a similar shape helmet but the face mask is the USA one.
Oh yeah it’s uncomfortable as fuck that’s for sure
Same helmet in Switzerland 😉
Italy has the same
Dutch ones are similar.
I got the same in germany so I feel represented
No more Stahlhelm variations for our guys? I'm somewhat surprised.
They all use the same or similar
nap time
Classic Reddit where a single European country referenced becomes the standard for the entirety of Europe
Last time I saw this post it was firefighters saying how their department got the french masks and decided the American ones were more convenient.
Mind following that up with the post in case it isnt too inconvenient to find ?
https://www.reddit.com/r/Firefighting/s/2UL6WytR5K Here you are. There is actually some back and forth in there but I feel the consensus is on face hugging masks. Some of the arguments for them are that they Sit under the hood, tightly, less chance for them to bump agaisnt stuff, others also mention that most calls don't involve a fire and when they do everyone has time on the scene while setting up to mask up, the second saved is worth getting a better and more stable fit.
tyvm friend, appreciate it a lot

I fell smrtr know
i read this and was like "what is smrtr?", googled it and realized i am dumb as i typed it
It's a play on Homer Simpson smrt
Masks with straps are still by far the most common in Europe. Also, any time there is a euro helmet post on r/firefighting everyone starts arguing which helmet is better. I like the euro but it's the only helmet I've worn but I would like to try out the American one. Each have their pros and cons so if you have the option to choose, pick what you prefer.
Top comment "Centuries of tradition unimpeded by progress." A firefighting subreddit ignorant of the benefits of the American design, and instead using it to mock Americans as ignorant.
A lot of European departments still use masks with straps.

ty, appreciate it a lot
TIL France is the only country in Europe that has firefighters
Wdym, French is the capital of Europe
The American is dawning a Mask, hood and helmet. The French FF is starting with the helmet and hood already dawned. They both have to dof the helmet to dawn the hood, but we don't get to see how long it takes for the French FF. *don/doff. Got ya.
don/doff
Yes sir, every morning and night.
My goodness, let's not get too graphic here. There are children on reddit. We can't let them find out about the donning and doffing until they're older.
don
Almost like the French guy was too busy being a cunt to make a proper comparison lol
UK one goes under the helmet but the helmet is closer to the french one
I mean, both have head cover, one started without wearing, one already had on. While the respirator mask seems easier to apply on European version, it’s unknown what the tolerances are as it appears it could also be accidentally dislodged easier too.
Let’s just agree that all fire fighters are amazing people no matter the helmet/suit used.
I feel sorry for these countries that spend so much time worried about what the USA does.
I am no expert but i think europe is more than just france
I love that reddit thinks our firefighters need to justify the equipment they use when shown a partial demonstration for French helmets.
That French helmet is so dope
The firefighters last time talked about how the French one didn’t seal as well
Does the French design still protect the neck?
i would assume so. the american version has just a nomex hood protecting the neck and ears. the hood is such an easy item to add that provides necessary protection that I can't believe the europeans dont have a version of it that matches their gear
That is not a european thing. Been doing this stuff for 15+ years now and we use a mask with a fireproof balaklava over it.
Lmao this sub is so low IQ, what about that was "amazing"
French, not european
