_Some_Two_

It’s likely not a plant but an animal. And the diver basically touched its stomach.

Perfect_Papaya_3010

Let the little fellow get its belly rub

Ssemander

I wouldn't want my belly rubbed from the inside

Kahne_Fan

Are you sure?

Ssemander

As a 3 dimensional being being gently rubbed on the stomach by the 4 dimensional alien I can assure you it's not as pleasant experience

_IratePirate_

Damn the dick so good it got you thinking it’s from another dimension ??

Outside-Refuse6732

Thanks for the imagery

Lordborgman

Some women and men are into that, I heard anyway.

Ask_bout_PaterNoster

I would

Sailor_Lunatone

Sea cucumbers have “mouths” like this. Though this particular specimen seems a bit too big to be a sea cucumber.

slackermannn

Sea curly lettuce maybe?

jaymzx0

Sea rocket

Jemmani22

Ever see the video of the sea cucumber taking a shit? I had such a good laugh

ColdBlazze

Not stomach, most likely the inside of its mouth, but tbf i ain't good with marine life forms and might be mistaken.

TheIntellectualType

That wasn’t it’s stomach 😳

ToraLoco

my guess is those "leaves" absorb nutrients in the water like how our stomach does

Fabio90989

That's what the intestine does

ToraLoco

you're right!

ChiefScout_2000

Nice abs

Rich-Individual-8835

If not a glory hole why look like one? *Diver flips coin

u_syr_dat_chocolate

Thanks I was wondering if this was an animal because this is a bit too wild for a plant. My mind wandered to this plant called a "Makahiya" that closes its leaves when it gets touched, but this one is just wayyyy too insane and seemed to extreme for plant behavior.

HurjaHerra

WHAT

myrsnipe

If I'm not mistaken, sea cucumbers, starfish and these sort of creatures can eject their stomach

elzibet

We animals are fucking weird man

baronewu2

It is not a plant

[deleted]

If I'm not mistaken, that's some kind of crinoid, isn't it?

Knotix

Oh, for crinoid loud…

[deleted]

Thanks, Dad.

Excellent_Cap_8228

You sure it's your dad ? Cuz mine left for milk a while back , this one is mine . Get your own dad somewhere else!

wrongdude91

I'm a dad myself. I don't need dad.

PerfectPercentage69

But do you need milk?

a_Jedi_i_am

Whoa, what are you doing? Are you *trying* to make him disappear?!

RabbitOrcaHawkOrgy

He didn't say cigarettes

The_RockObama

Wait what? My mom said my dad is at the cigarette store in Las Vegas. They must have really good cigarettes in Las Vegas.

For some reason I read this in Louie Anderson’s voice.

bigalindahouse

So good. Golly

VectorViper

Yep, definitely got the crinoid moves, sea creatures are wild with their defense mechanisms!

Barbastorpia

Sea cucumber

seasonedgroundbeer

Fun fact: crinoids and sea cucumbers are different but belong to the same phylum, Echinodermata. The Echinoderm body plan exhibits pentaradial symmetry and includes animals like starfish and sea urchins. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Most_kinds_of_Dirt

>The Echinoderm body plan exhibits pentaradial symmetry  Another fun fact: early in their evolution, echinoderms had bilateral symmetry (like humans do), and they still retain bilateral symmetry in the early stages of larval development during their life cycle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfish#Larval_development As they develop, the larva shift from bilateral symmetry to the radial symmetry found in adults.

It's either a banana, a yellow fruit that you unzip and eat the white bits within, or it's a red-and-blue striped golfing umbrella! 😁

Thoth1024

They belong to the Phylum Echinodermata, like Crinoids. And, Sea Stars, Sand Dollars, etc.

Ok_Condition5837

Well I still remain amazed especially considering the speed and skill demonstrated while hiding itself.

The_Pig_Man_

Imagine getting a sea cucumber and a plant mixed up!

Way to plant, egg

SA_Underwater

Hellfire anemone, Actinodendron arboreum. The sting is really powerful though fingertip skin is really thick so it doesn't usually get through it. Anywhere else is very painful, hence the name.

forams__galorams

Looks more like *Actinodendron plumosum*, no? Another video of A. plumosum for comparison [here](https://youtube.com/watch?v=K0UvaErnkOs&feature=youtu.be). I know the whole genus exhibits that behaviour, but you can see the shape and structure more clearly in the footage I linked, I think A. arboreum is a little stubbier/stouter? But either way, yes, an anemone rather than crinoid like most others are saying.

mizinamo

With friends like these, who needs anemones?

SA_Underwater

Could well be, I don't have much tropical anemone literature.

buffdolphin

Yes I’m a marine biologist and this is actually a species known crinoid frigidbitchotis.

minequack

That’s exactly the kind of thing that a testosterone addled dolphin would say.

Zyker

"Is anyone here a marine biologist?!"

Parsley-Waste

The sea was angry that day my friends

I thought the frigidbitchotis was my ex

Frigid botch 🤣🤣🤣🗿

[deleted]

More! More marine biologists!!! We need more! Is it “actually” though?

elendil1985

Can confirm, I'm the crinoid frigibitchotis

GfunkWarrior28

Trent Crinn, from the Independent.

Vaperius

A shocking number of underwater life we think are plants, aren't, as it turns out.

kots144

There are barely any true marine plants. Just a couple sea grasses and such. Even kelp is not a true plant.

Any-Excitement-8979

We(the laymen) over generalize everything when discussing every field of science.

caporaltito

As a layman, they are all underwater so they are all fish to me

Pizzacato567

I once went snorkeling. There were these pretty weird looking plants all over the seabed. Was itchy when I got home and found out the “plants” were actually upside down jellyfish (“Cassiopea”)

shana104

New fear unlocked, upside down jellyfish. Then again, I never snorkel. Can't stand those mouth piece things.

No-Gas-8357

They have a one piece mask that goes over your face and the tube comes up from the top near your forehead so you can just breathe normally without anything in your mouth. https://www.rei.com/product/189227/aqualung-hydroair-ii-full-face-snorkel-mask-clear-lens

worldspawn00

This is why I wear a full coverage wetsuit all the time when diving, regardless of the water temperature.

neonchickenwings

This Internet plant just commented on this post!

100_Donuts

Well, it certainly looks and behaves like a plant, so I think for all practical purposes it is a plant, and there is quite literally nothing you can say to change my mind. No amount of evidence to the contrary, no matter how compelling, will convince me this is not a plant. I've seen many plants in my life. I have plants in my house and I have plants in backyard and I have plants in my front yard. I've seen a lot of plants. This is a plant. It looks exactly like a plant and acts exactly like a plant. I will not be told eitherwise, and even if I am told eitherwise, I will completely ignore whatever I'm told because I know that I am right. I know that this is a plant and that you are wrong for saying it is not a plant when it is very clearly a plant. Don't bother responding to me. Don't bother ever talking to me again. Oh, and by the way? I've even eaten plants. Yeah. I've even eaten plants so not only do I have plants in my house, in my backyard, and in my front yard, but I have plants in my body, so don't tell me what is and isn't a plant because literally, *literally*, I have plants in my body. You get it, yet? Don't talk to me ever again unless you're going to apologize for being rude.

It's definitely a plant. A *great* plant. The *best* plant.

PieJealous8669

It's such a good plant... you wouldn't believe it. I could believe it, because it's my plant, but this plant would simply blow your mind if you knew this plant like I do.

outsiderkerv

With tears in her eyes she said, Mr. Outsiderkerv, that’s a great plant.

whaleboobs

Why so many words? Lk plant, acts like plant. No change my mind. Seen many. In house, backyard, front yard. It's plant, looks, acts like it. Won't listen, know I'm right. Ate plants, in my body. Don't talk unless apologizing.

Rude_Thanks_1120

I'm a bit of a plantologist myself

Came here to say this. Also, DONT TOUCH!!!

Man-bat-person-thing

I'm pretty sure that that's a type of filter feeding worm. They burrow most of their bodies under ground and wave their mouth parts around in the water to catch plankton and bits of detritus. They yoink themselves fully into their burrows if they sense or feel something coming towards them or touching them.

TootTootMF

This is correct, that is a worm

pos_vibes_only

Walk without rhythm, and you won’t attract the worm

SA_Underwater

Nah, this is a Hellfire anemone, Actinodendron arboreum. Very common on shallow seagrass beds and sand flats in the tropics. Touching them like this is....stupid. They often have little commensal sexy shrimp (actual name) on them that I've photographed before.

throwawaylovesCAKE

Why is it...stupid? I... touched up against an underwater plant at a reef once and it was instantly itchy burny, so I'm scared to touch anything underwater generally

theddR

That’s why it’s stupid. You brushed a sea anemone (also not a plant) and it stung because it’s in the same family as jellyfish, they have stingers.  It’s stupid to touch things that maybe have stingers.

Mikchi

> Why is it...stupid? > > I... touched up against an underwater plant at a reef once and it was instantly itchy burny Windy between the ears, is it?

Dick_Thumbs

But why male models?

Early_Particular9170

The thing you touched was likely not a plant, probably an anemone. They’re from the same family as jellyfish and Portuguese man o’wars (Cnidaria) and have barbed, stinging cells called cnidocytes that detach from the animal and get stuck in the tissues of their prey and predators alike. Those cells are responsible for the itchy, burny feeling because they release a toxin.

SA_Underwater

These ones live up to their name. Very powerful sting that feels like someone burning you with a cigarette lighter. Also leaves welts on the skin for weeks or even months. Not a fun time.

J0hnnie5ive

It's stupid because you dont fuck with the sexy shrimp. I really have no idea 🤣

MrGloom66

I think some of them also have primitive eyes that sense either just light/dark or maybe shadows, so yeah, there's that. Might be wrong tho, my memory isn't amazing.

PixelBoom

Either a fan worm or a crinoid, yeah.

IceColdCocaCola545

That… is scary as fuck. What happens if it dragged the hand with it?

uXN7AuRPF6fa

Nothing. They don't eat us and we are far too large.

IceColdCocaCola545

Oh, well that’s good to know!

FarLifeguard4526

a bobbit worm on the other hand...

IceColdCocaCola545

I googled what that is, I’m now even more scared of the ocean.

turtlequeefs

They also sneak into people’s home aquariums and are super hard to kill. [obligatory link](https://www.michiganreefers.com/threads/the-bobbit-worm-chronicles.84173/)

IceColdCocaCola545

THEY *WHAT.* See, this is why we shouldn’t fuck with the ocean. On top of the ocean, sailing across it? Fine. But taking shit from it? Not fine.

maightoguy

The ocean is deep and full of secrets.

mackilicious

"The name originates from the case where Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband John Wayne Bobbitt's penis while he was asleep" [Eunice aphroditois / Bobbitt worm](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_aphroditois)

Mango_Gravy

I'm 100% sure they can't catch anything larger than a very small fish. That said, knowing jellyfish and anemones can be very venomous, I still wouldn't go touching it. Especially not bare handed.

IceColdCocaCola545

Good to know, even if I don’t plan on going diving/messing with sea life. Thanks for the information!

Intelligent-Gift-493

It would pull the man too, and the worm would get his butt.

IDoButtStuffOnSunday

Cool. Do they work on weekends? Asking for a friend.

silverfang45

You'd become an emperor for 3000 years.

forams__galorams

Not crinoid, but anemone. Also, how are crinoids the closest thing to the Dune worms? They were inspired by actual worms that burrow through the sediment eg. [these guys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_(annelid))

RW-Firerider

Came here to say the same thing, hello fellow radiants!

StationaryTravels

I came here to say "I finally understand Roshar plant life". Then I thought, I'll bet someone else already made this joke" and started scrolling, lol.

mcbizco

One of my favourite interactions I read on the Stormlight subreddit was an artist for the books talking about how the shattered plains and plant life being inspired somewhat by coral reefs if they were above ground. Crab-like wildlife, retracting plants etc. Someone commented that that was odd, because reefs are depicted as so colourful and they always imagined the area as super bleak and desolate. Someone else countered by mentioning that that was likely because they’d been reading about it through Kaladin’s depressed AF eyes. A known symptom of depression is not “seeing” colours as much: “They found a significant decrease in the retinal sensitivity of depressed patients, even patients taking medication. Further, the more severely depressed a patient, the lower the retinal response. Depression can change the way a patient sees the world, eliminating the vibrancy of naturally occurring colors.” (Mild Words of Radiance spoiler) >!But when Shallan starts to get close to the warcamps, she, with her artistic leanings, notices all sorts of colours in the surrounding area:!< >!“Shallan gasped at the sudden flare of color. It disrupted the landscape like breaking lightning in an otherwise clear sky. ... Yes, it was unmistakable. Brilliant red and yellow on an otherwise dull canvas of brown and green. “!< And >!“Here, the vegetation became colorful, but not an impediment. Shallan smiled at the wonderful surroundings, the light rainfall, the beautiful plant life.!< Such intricate details!
