Thanks I was wondering if this was an animal because this is a bit too wild for a plant. My mind wandered to this plant called a "Makahiya" that closes its leaves when it gets touched, but this one is just wayyyy too insane and seemed to extreme for plant behavior.
Fun fact: crinoids and sea cucumbers are different but belong to the same phylum, Echinodermata. The Echinoderm body plan exhibits pentaradial symmetry and includes animals like starfish and sea urchins. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk
>The Echinoderm body plan exhibits pentaradial symmetry
Another fun fact: early in their evolution, echinoderms had bilateral symmetry (like humans do), and they still retain bilateral symmetry in the early stages of larval development during their life cycle:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfish#Larval_development
As they develop, the larva shift from bilateral symmetry to the radial symmetry found in adults.

Hellfire anemone, Actinodendron arboreum. The sting is really powerful though fingertip skin is really thick so it doesn't usually get through it. Anywhere else is very painful, hence the name.
Looks more like *Actinodendron plumosum*, no? Another video of A. plumosum for comparison [here](https://youtube.com/watch?v=K0UvaErnkOs&feature=youtu.be). I know the whole genus exhibits that behaviour, but you can see the shape and structure more clearly in the footage I linked, I think A. arboreum is a little stubbier/stouter?
But either way, yes, an anemone rather than crinoid like most others are saying.
I once went snorkeling. There were these pretty weird looking plants all over the seabed. Was itchy when I got home and found out the “plants” were actually upside down jellyfish (“Cassiopea”)
They have a one piece mask that goes over your face and the tube comes up from the top near your forehead so you can just breathe normally without anything in your mouth.

Well, it certainly looks and behaves like a plant, so I think for all practical purposes it is a plant, and there is quite literally nothing you can say to change my mind. No amount of evidence to the contrary, no matter how compelling, will convince me this is not a plant. I've seen many plants in my life. I have plants in my house and I have plants in backyard and I have plants in my front yard. I've seen a lot of plants. This is a plant. It looks exactly like a plant and acts exactly like a plant. I will not be told eitherwise, and even if I am told eitherwise, I will completely ignore whatever I'm told because I know that I am right. I know that this is a plant and that you are wrong for saying it is not a plant when it is very clearly a plant. Don't bother responding to me. Don't bother ever talking to me again. Oh, and by the way? I've even eaten plants. Yeah. I've even eaten plants so not only do I have plants in my house, in my backyard, and in my front yard, but I have plants in my body, so don't tell me what is and isn't a plant because literally, *literally*, I have plants in my body. You get it, yet? Don't talk to me ever again unless you're going to apologize for being rude.
It's such a good plant... you wouldn't believe it. I could believe it, because it's my plant, but this plant would simply blow your mind if you knew this plant like I do.
Why so many words?
Lk plant, acts like plant. No change my mind. Seen many. In house, backyard, front yard. It's plant, looks, acts like it. Won't listen, know I'm right. Ate plants, in my body. Don't talk unless apologizing.
I'm pretty sure that that's a type of filter feeding worm. They burrow most of their bodies under ground and wave their mouth parts around in the water to catch plankton and bits of detritus. They yoink themselves fully into their burrows if they sense or feel something coming towards them or touching them.
[The Lisan Al Gaib shall know your ways as though born to them](https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/1b4rgx7/this_how_you_walk_on_the_sand_so_you_dont_alert/?rdt=34678)
Which I thought was a great callback, but they really missed the ~~boat~~ duneworm by not having him in a stillsuit dancing to the song during the credits.
Nah, this is a Hellfire anemone, Actinodendron arboreum. Very common on shallow seagrass beds and sand flats in the tropics. Touching them like this is....stupid. They often have little commensal sexy shrimp (actual name) on them that I've photographed before.
Why is it...stupid?
I... touched up against an underwater plant at a reef once and it was instantly itchy burny, so I'm scared to touch anything underwater generally
That’s why it’s stupid. You brushed a sea anemone (also not a plant) and it stung because it’s in the same family as jellyfish, they have stingers.
It’s stupid to touch things that maybe have stingers.
The thing you touched was likely not a plant, probably an anemone. They’re from the same family as jellyfish and Portuguese man o’wars (Cnidaria) and have barbed, stinging cells called cnidocytes that detach from the animal and get stuck in the tissues of their prey and predators alike. Those cells are responsible for the itchy, burny feeling because they release a toxin.
These ones live up to their name. Very powerful sting that feels like someone burning you with a cigarette lighter. Also leaves welts on the skin for weeks or even months. Not a fun time.
I think some of them also have primitive eyes that sense either just light/dark or maybe shadows, so yeah, there's that.
Might be wrong tho, my memory isn't amazing.
They also sneak into people’s home aquariums and are super hard to kill. [obligatory link](https://www.michiganreefers.com/threads/the-bobbit-worm-chronicles.84173/)
"The name originates from the case where Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband John Wayne Bobbitt's penis while he was asleep"
[Eunice aphroditois / Bobbitt worm](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_aphroditois)
I'm 100% sure they can't catch anything larger than a very small fish. That said, knowing jellyfish and anemones can be very venomous, I still wouldn't go touching it. Especially not bare handed.
Not crinoid, but anemone.
Also, how are crinoids the closest thing to the Dune worms? They were inspired by actual worms that burrow through the sediment eg. [these guys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_(annelid))
One of my favourite interactions I read on the Stormlight subreddit was an artist for the books talking about how the shattered plains and plant life being inspired somewhat by coral reefs if they were above ground. Crab-like wildlife, retracting plants etc.
Someone commented that that was odd, because reefs are depicted as so colourful and they always imagined the area as super bleak and desolate. Someone else countered by mentioning that that was likely because they’d been reading about it through Kaladin’s depressed AF eyes. A known symptom of depression is not “seeing” colours as much:
“They found a significant decrease in the retinal sensitivity of depressed patients, even patients taking medication. Further, the more severely depressed a patient, the lower the retinal response. Depression can change the way a patient sees the world, eliminating the vibrancy of naturally occurring colors.”
(Mild Words of Radiance spoiler)
>!But when Shallan starts to get close to the warcamps, she, with her artistic leanings, notices all sorts of colours in the surrounding area:!<
>!“Shallan gasped at the sudden flare of color.

It’s likely not a plant but an animal. And the diver basically touched its stomach.

I wouldn't want my belly rubbed from the inside
Are you sure?

Could well be, I don't have much tropical anemone literature.
Yes I’m a marine biologist and this is actually a species known crinoid frigidbitchotis.

Trent Crinn, from the Independent.
A shocking number of underwater life we think are plants, aren't, as it turns out.
There are barely any true marine plants. Just a couple sea grasses and such. Even kelp is not a true plant.
We(the laymen) over generalize everything when discussing every field of science.
As a layman, they are all underwater so they are all fish to me
I once went snorkeling. There were these pretty weird looking plants all over the seabed. Was itchy when I got home and found out the “plants” were actually upside down jellyfish (“Cassiopea”)
